Roger 8-6-Hotel, you are cleared for takeoff on 3-3. Right turn out approved to 1500 for the Pushaw Lake Region. Sound like something from Top Gun, well it isn't. It is a common occurrence for student pilots. This year Bangor High School has six senior student pilots working for their certificates. Flying for these students is a constant battle. Time, money, weather, paperwork, maintenance on planes, plane availability, instructor time, groundschool, physicals, and keeping the rating of an aircraft current all hinder the student pilot in his quest for his certificate. ln order to obtain his certificate he has to have more than 40 hours of flight time. During the first 10 hours of flying the student learns the basics of flying. Before the student can continue he has to take an FAA physical. Having passed the physical the student continues for another 10 hours of local solo time Q50 nautical miles around ones home airport and completely alone in the aircraftl. During the next 20 hours the student pilot flies 10 hours with an instructor and 10 hours solo cross-country toutside 50 nautical miles of one's home airport with at least one stop overl. The student pilot is almost ready to take his flight exam, he needs 3 hours of night flying with an instructor as well as practicing for his flight exam. But before this the student has to go through a groundschool and take an FAA written exam. Then the student pilot is ready to go for his flight exam which will certify him as a full fledged pilot. The six senior student pilots at Bangor High School are: Shawn Michaud with over 50 hours of flight time in a 4 place Cessna. He is ready to take his flight test. P. 1. Bussiere with 50 hours of flight time in a 4 place Cessna. He is finishing his solo cross-country flights. Rob Tomlinson with 40 hours of flight time in a 2 place Cessna. He is finishing his solo cross-country flights. Ian Gillis with 30 hours of flight time in a 4 place Cessna. He is working on cross-country flights. Erik Lagerquist with 15 hours of flight time in a 2 place Cessna. He is working on local solo flights. Chris Barclay with 8 hours of flight time in a 2 place Cessna. He is working on finishing basic airwork. - These figures were current as of February 1988 - The student pilots would like to thank their flight instructors and groundschool instructors. M Bill Parent has been servicing Webber customer burners for better than 33 years. And as the say- goes around here, If Bill can't fix it, it ain't broke. Most companies charge about the same for heating oil the big difference, at 3 AM on a cold February night, is having a Bill Parent ready to handle your emergency. To assure Webber customers of this on-going-tradition, the Webber management team, headed by com- pany president, Larry Mahaney, constantly reviews new and innovative methods toward im- proved service. At Webber, we believe if we don't provide great service we just do11't deserve the business. Thats why people put their trust in Webber. bbw' FUELS Serving Maine people for 50 years. Summer School PHHJJPSEXETERACADEMY EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE 03833 603-772-4311 Dear I'd like to welcome you to my Oceanography class and make a few comments which I hope will help you to profit from and enjoy the course. If you have taken courses in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, it would help to review andfor bring along any refer- ence books you might have. The course will include field trips and lab work. The water temperature along the New Hampshire coast seldom rises above 55 degrees Fahrenheit, but is tolerable for wading. You may want some sort of boots or waders, but most people do fine with shorts and old tennis shoes. Don't plan to go barefoot - barnacles are sharp! The days are generally warm and humid, but you may want a sweater or light jacket for early morning field trips. Each student will be asked to prepare, and present to the class, a talk on some oceanographic subject. If you have a pet topic and some references at home, you may wish to start thinking about it early. I look forward to meeting you in June. Sincerely, Andrew G. Hudson Instructor, Summer School ALDfhh I SUMMER scuoor. PHILLIPS EXETER ACADEMY EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE 03853 4 603-772-4311 This summer's Archaeology course will involve classroom discussion, laboratory experience and the excavation of a pre- historic camp site located approximately lk miles from campus. fieldwork' Please bring the following items appropriate for this experience: l. Old clothes, which you won't mind getting dirty -- jeans and a long sleeved shirt. 2. Boots or sneakers. 3. Insect repellent. 4. A hat. S. Gardening gloves.
