Seniors ..... Activities .... Sports ..... Advertising . . . 1954 Dedication Du-ring his thirty-tiwo years of service at Bangor High School, Mr. Clarence H. D-risko has earned an enviable reputation as subnialster and supervisor of the Industrial Arts Departrnelnt. His skill in solving the problems of the daily sehool routine, and his fairness in dealing with the in- numerable excuses of absent and tandy pupils have brought him in contact with our student body in a zznique way. Next gear's classes will miss his capable and un- dersianrling assistance. It is with a feeling of deep appreciation for his 'untiring efforts that the 1954 O-racle staff dedicales this siavty-fourth edition of the Bangor High School Oracle to Mr. Clarence H. Drisko. FOREWORD A star is the symbol of highest achievement. lt is representative of hard work and valuable time spent to obtain a polished product. We have chosen the star as the theme for our yearbook because it portrays our beliefs. Bangor High School is the star of the high schools in Maine. The students of B.H.S. have worked hard to achieve their end-a successful high school career-and each deserves a star for his contribution to the school. Our yearbook is one of the greatest publications in the history of the Oracle. It is the star of yearbooks. As you read the Oracle, we hope that you will be consciously aware of our theme, and that our star will gleam brilliantly for you-a symbol ot' achievement. Student Council The school year ot' 19531-5-1 has been a big one for the Student Council - full ol' money-making schemes that really paid oil. The tirst ot' these was a rummage sale put on to linance a Bangor High handbook, which was edited by the National Honor Society. Encouraged by homeroom competition, students brought in everything from a big stalled frog to ladies' dresses to make the sale a huge success. Then came All-Bangor Night, that annual affair in which all school organizations take part, which more than lived up to its reputation. The entertainment was highlighted by Hero, Save My Daugliterlu a pantomime melodrama, put on by the faculty. All proceeds from All-Bangor Night went toward sponsoring a foreign student who will study Bill Advei-tises the Student Couneirs in Il. II. S. next year. Rummag Sale Faculty advisers this year were Miss Marian Dullour- dieu and Mr. llichard Klain. Varsity Football This year's Bangor High School football team was a good example of how a green team could be molded into a solid, smooth-working club in a 'l'ew short weeks. Although the 1953 edition of the Rams did not have so impressive a record as some past clubs, with its 5-3 mark, it was certainly a credit to Bangor High. The powerful 1952 Bangor club was hard hit by graduation, and as the '53 season opened, Coach Cy Perkins found himself in the unhappy position of having only two line holdovers, Charlie Barker, and Bob Legere. With these boys and backlield men Web Clark, Bill Daley, and Pete Taylor as a nucleus, Coach Perkins soo-n had a strong offensive ball club, with the addition ol' Vaughn Anthony, Jim Bartlett, Bob Ginn, Tom Larkin, Gordon Richardson, Paul Silsby, Russ Ware, and Ben Welch. 69 if s A.., , U gf :..,, 4 K -,. -EW' 1, A W -z. -: A J -aw , I K A K. x . V. loot- ball squad came through the 19513 season with a successful record ol' six wins and only one setback. The junior Hams opened the season by drop- ping the two junior highs. The M.C.l. Jayvees were the next to fall, fol- lowed closely by Old Town. Fifth Street Went down to defeat on the Jayvee's only road game, but Old Town proved to be too much for Bangor and revenged an earlier defeat. This was the only blemish on the Jayvee record as they dumped Garland Street to round out the season on a win- ning note. Many ol' the players showed great promise for the years to come. Faplain Ilill llill led a strong line that was aided by Conrad Cleale, Jim Dean, I-Bob Morin, Don Thomas, Everett George, and Hob Zoidis. The back- lield combination ol' Cal Johnson, Dick Drummond, Hal Ayer, and Wayne llolyoke broke wide open many a game for the .layvees. Cross Country The Ram harriers of 1953 rolled up one of their best seasons in many years by showing a clean slate of victories in regular competition. In the opening meet Coach Vince Cuozzo's charges rolled up a perfect score of 15 points against Hartland and Car- mel. In cross country scoring, the team with the fewest points wins. To gain a 'perfect sco-re of 15, it is necessary for a team to place the first seven runners across the finish line before a single opponent. Bangor then proceeded to romp over Old Town, took Lee and Ellsworth in a tri- angular meet, and then trampled the Maine Freshmen by a nearly perfect score. Lead- ing a field of six in the Regional Meet, the Rams closed o-ut the season by dropping Wa- terville and M. C. I. to the tune of 15 to 48 t-o 77, another perfect score. Hampered by bad weather, the Bangor boys placed second to Houlton in the State Meet, their first loss of the season. They revenged this loss in the New England Meet at Boston as they we1'e the first Maine team in the scoring. The J. V. harriers also had but one blemish on their record, a close loss to Water- ville in a triangular meet. Although the Rams will lose several brilliant lettermen this year, there are many fine p1'ospects coming up. Gary Smith, outstanding veteran of two years, will captain the Rams in 1954, and Coach Vince Cuo-zzo is looking forward to another good season. B.H.S. Varsity Basketball Bangor Iligh's basketball squad wound up the 19523-51 season with an excellent rec- ord ol' twelve victories against four losses and gained the sixth slot in the Eastern Maine Class L Tourney. Only three teams were able to beat the Hams this season, while Bangor took decisions from seven victims including double wins over six of the seven. The Hams opened the season with a 66-56 loss to Old Town, but then took both games on the Aroostook trip-the first time in several years that this happened. The Rams lost to Stearns and also a live point thriller to unbeaten Ellsworth. They then went on a rampage and took ten of the remaining eleven games. That one loss was to Stearns while the wins were doubles against Brewer, Bapst, and Waterville and singles against Old Town, Presque Isle, Houlton, and Berlin, New Hampshire. This streak carried the Rams into the Eastern Maine Tourney, where they met Old Town in the opener. It was the rubber game of the year for these two clubs and a thriller all the way. The Rams scalped the Indians 61-59 and went on to battle Ells- worth in the second. The Eagles took this one, overpowering the Hams 61-16. So ended a highly successful year for the Hams. Their startling comeback in the first Ellsworth game to decrease a 21-point deficit to come within 5 points of' winning. and the playing oi' a professional-looking Bangor team in the tourney opener against Old Town were among the high points of the season. The prospect for next year also looks bright tor Coach Barry's Hams, as three of this year's starters along with six of the other members of the squad will return next year. Only Captain Dick Russell, Iloh Thomas, and Stan Gass are departing, while Danny Drinon. Ronny Boynton, and Char- lie Taylor, along with Bob Cimbolleck, Bill Daley, John Graham, Alan Schiro, Paul Sils- by, and Gunnar Van Aken will be back and Should form a strong team for next year. 74 n-s i vilwl, left fo riylfl: Cornelius Mullaney, Richard lludley, Robert Zoidis, Ilonald 3 Thomas, ltohert Morin, Julian White, lravid Carlisle, Harold Ayer. fnuiingr: Manager Warren Overlook, Louis King, Stanley Jordan, Rodney Pelkey, John Hill, Richard lieadhetter, liverett Geor1.:v,.Ion England, William White, Coach Norman Perkins. J. V. Basketball The 1953-51 edition ol the junior hardcourt Hams finished a good sea- son with a mark of eight victories and six defeats. The main purpose of the J. V. program, other than giving the boys a chance to play against good competition, is to develop material for the fol- lowing year's varsity squad, and this year's squad produced several excel- lent prospects. Dave Carlisle, Bob Dudley, Everett George, Bob Morin, and Ziggy Zoidis all looked like good varsity material for next year. Two ol' the best games of the year were against class S teams. The Hams dropped a close game to Deer Isle, a semi-finalist in the Eastern Maine Tourney, and in the seaso-n's wrap-up took an impressive victory fi om a strong Beal's team, a team which lost the Eastern Maine S final by only three points to the eventual state champ, Bridgewater. 76 i f First row, left to fright: Cornelius Mullaney, Charles Taylor, Robert Kelley, Ronald Boynton, Bernard Stevenson, Vaughn Anthony, John Graham, William Daley liavid Carlisle. 5f'f'07l.'i row: William Hill, James Bartlett, llanicl lirinon, Richard Leadbettcr, Gordon Richardson, Stanley Craig, Manager Richard Stacey, Coach Fred Barry. Baseball Bangor l-Iigh's diamond nine started off the year in good fo-rm, but then faltered and fell, and at this writing the Rams have a record of two wins and four defeats. Bangor's prospects for the year looked good at the start of the season. The Rams had returning starters at catcher, third base, and left and center fields. In addition there were several other men back who had seen some service, and a few good sopho- mores. The hitting and fielding seemed fairly solid, but there was one question mark, and that was pitching. Coach Barry had Ronnie Boynton, Bernie Stevenson, and Clint Van Aken back from last year's squad, but these men had seen only limited serviceg and they, along with sophomore Dave Carlisle, made up the entire mound staff. These pitching worries seemed unfounded as the Rams chalked up victories in the two opening games. Ronnie Boynton got c1'edit for both wins, starting against Stearns, and relieving against John Bapst. After these games, however, the Rams started to slide. They lost to Stearns and Ellsworth on successive days, and followed with a loss to Brewer. Then Bangor dropped the playoff game to Ellsworth by a 9-2 count. At presen'C, that's how it stands. Despite Bangor's record, the pitching has looked good in spots and a timely hit or fielding play could have turned defeat into victory on seve1'al occasions. At the plate, center fielder Punk Kelley, a three-year veteran, has led the club with an average just short of .400. Charlie Taylor, the Rams' catcher and Connie Mul- laney, the sophomore right fielder, have also come through with some timely blows. Vaughn Anthony in right field, Jim Bartlett at first, Bill Daley at third, Danny Drinon at short, and Johnny Graham at second, make up the remainder of Bangor's starting nine. With only Anthony, Bartlett, Kelley, and Stevenson being seniors, next year's pastimers should really make themselves felt in local competition. 77 tn. Track The Bangor High track squad closed out its 1954 regular season with one ol' the best records in recent years. The Hams went undefeated against high school competition, losing only to a pair of college freshman teams. From the way things have shaped up, Bangor is the favorite to take its lirst state title in many long years. For the third straight year, the juniors walked oii' with top honors in the interclass competition. The seniors had to be content with second place, and the sophomores placed third. The Colby freshmen proved too much for the Rams as they went down on the short end of a 65 to 51 score at Waterville. Cass, Husson, Jordan, Lane, Pelkey, Silsby, Thomas, Ware, Webster and White all chipped in with wins as they dropped Skowhegan 88 to- 29. v Next on the schedule was the Bates Relays where the Rams walked ofl with top honors with 44521, points. The Rams scored in every event. liven though the Rams lost to a strong Maine Frosh team, their second def eat, they swept the discus and shot put events. Bangor's next wins were over M. C. I., Waterville, and Winslow. Bob Thomas set a new school record by high jumping 5 feet 89244 inches in the Waterville-Winslow-Bangor meet. Thus the B. H. S. Cindermen, coached by Cy Perkins, iinished one of the most successful track seasons in recent years.
