Toga Tuesday proved to be the most fun, even for those who didn't want to get too wrapped up in it. Fun night was the most successful it has been in years, with everyone joining in on the fun. Bold Mr. Bollech proved he could eat applesauce through a straw better than anyone. In the skits, the teachers showed the Vil- lage People do have competition. The seniors came out victorious in the egg toss and survived the Pinto pack- ing contest. The float competition was too close to call, with the Seniors. Sophomores, and Jr. High tied for first. I. Midnight Blue was the theme for the 1980 Football Homecoming Dance, which was held after the game. The Pep Club furnished the refreshments and decorated the gym in shades of Blue. The music was provided by John Schaller with his huge record collection. The Homecoming Dance like the rest of the Homecoming ac- tivities. was the most successful it had been in recent years. NEUTRALIZING NECEDAH The Homecoming football game saw the Cardinals defeat Necedah. At half the band and colorguard provided the enter- tainment. Halftime also saw the presentation of the 1980 Home- coming Court. Since the player representatives were busy dis- cussing strategy, the girls had the teacher of their choice as an escort for the game. 1. In pursuit 2. Pregame warm-ups 3. Punting to perfection 4. On Saturday night. April 25, under a full false ceiling of red. pink, and white, people began to file in to listen to the music of Aurora, and await the coronation. An antici- pating hush fell over the crowd as the court walked up to. and as- cended the stage to take their places beneath the blooming rose. 1. 1980 Prom King and Queen. The cast, headed by John Paul Schaller and Amy Hansen, the new director Mrs. Dunphy. and the stage crew, directed by Mr. Romskog all combined for another successful presenta- tion. to the extent of a record audience run. The many activities highlighted included: rope packing, tug-of- war, sack race, football freethrows, seven legged race and the traditional singing of carols by the chorus. The un- beaten class of '81 came out on top again winning their fifth consecutive tug-of-war match. They are the undisputed CHAMPS, having won every tug-of-war held at B.H.S. The basketball team started the evening off by defeating New Lisbon, and a large audience was on hand after the game to see coronation at K 30. The court was decided a bit differently this year, with one representative chosen from each of the following: Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Basketball. Wrestling, and the Freshman. Sophomore. Junior and Senior Classes. FALL AWARDS NIGHT Last year there were three separate banquets held honoring athletes in fall, winter and spring sports. The fall awards night was to honor volleyball and football players, was held in November. The meal was potluck. and each family brought a dish to pass. The idea of honoring the athletes after the season, instead of wait- ing until spring was appreciated by many. 1. Mike Wolf—2nd team AH Conference 2. John Schaller—AN Conference Honorable Mention 3. The J.V.’s ended their year with a 7 and 6 record. DISAPPOINTMENT After two successful seasons, the 1980 Cardinal football team pro- vided many exhilarating moments, as well as a few disappointing ones. The highlight of the season was when the Cardinals defeated Necedah on Homecoming night. After losing many players to graduation, the Cardinals put aside the teams small size and took the field with determination and spirit. The 3-5 record this past year does not reflect the true spirit and hard work of our Cardinals. I. This is the way a good game get start- ed. 3. Hey buddy, watch itlll 3. They also had the honor of being rated number I in the state. All five starters received conference awards. 1st team: Mary Nicolai, Peggy Meyer, and Gail Clements. 2nd team: Kim Torgerud. Honorable Mention: Kay Wittmershaus. The Wisconsin State Journal placed Peggy Meyer and Mary Nicolai on the all area team. Mary Nicolai also received Hon- orable Mention for the all State Team. For individual grapplers it was a season of delight, with John Jones winning a confer- ence championship, and frustration for many of the first year partici- pants who through varying degrees of success found themselves learning how tough it really is. Scoring 36 pins the Cardinals showed that they never gave up and rolled over for anyone. With increasing numbers, the able coaching of Mr. Brewer and Mr. Halverson, and experience the wres- tling program is well on its way to more success. I. John—Our Champ!! 3. Always a sport. 3. This past fall the football team was cheered on through good weather and bad. through good games and those not so good. The boys varsity team was a surprise to many, but not to their ever loyal six cheerleaders. This year's squad kept the crowds cheering the boys on to their winning ways. With the ever-increasing popularity of wrestling three underclassmen help lead the growing number of fans in exorting their men to pins. Often we only associate cheerleaders with the games, matches or pep rallies where we see them and forget the long hours these girls devote to preparing all these events let alone signs, hoops, fan buses, parents' night and Home- coming activities. 39 GONE BATTY” The 1981 baseball team un- der the direction of Coaches Rod Marks and Steve Tucker, ended the regular season tied for fourth in the conference with a 7-7 record a vast improvement over last year. Their first tourna- ment game was close until Cashton rallied for six runs to turn Bangor away. As the season ended, cap- tains awards went to Joe Stekel. and John Schaller. MVP-John Schaller, and High Batting Average to John Schaller with a .391 average. With a fine nu- cleus of young players, next year proves to be very promising. L to Ri F to B: B. Langman. P. Freit. Miss- ing from picture: H. Smith. At the beginning of the year, sixteen forensics students, and their enthusiastic coaches. Mrs. Jacobson and Mrs. Johnson, began planning the events that would make up this year's forensic season. They attended the annual workshop at UW-L, where they listened in on professors discussing the various forensic categories. To get warmed up for sub-district, several stu- dents participated in the UW-L Tournament. The day went quite well: H. Smith. K. Torgerud. and A. Hansen made it to the power round, while K. Wittmershaus placed second. Bangor played host to the Sub-District Forensic Contest on March 9. 1981. Twenty-five students from Bangor and West Salem competed in the contest. Eleven Bangor students received A's and five received B's. At the District Forensics Contest, held at UW-L on March 25. five students received A’s. and started practicing for the paramount of the forensics sea- son—the State Forensics Contest—held on the UW-Madison campus on April 25. 1981. At state, three received A’s, and two B's. The whole forensics season went very smoothly, thanks to the cooperation between two devoted teachers and their students. The forensics program at B. H.S. was very fortunate to have Mrs. Jacobson and Mrs. Johnson as the driving forces of the program. 53 Stale Forensics Contestants: S. Stekel. K. Wittmershaus. K. Torgerud. L. Syverson. and S. II, and Senior Math students, placed third out of eight schools, thanks to the help of their teacher. Mr. Ranous. First team honors went to Rose Bouska. while second team honors went to Kevin Stratman. Sue Streeck, and Kay Wittmershaus. The Student Council, under the direction of Pres. Mike Wolf, had a busy year, organizing Winter Homecoming and the All-Awards Night. At Awards Night, they honored Mr. Romskog with their Outstanding Service Award. Improvements were also on the Stu- dent Council’s agenda. They bought hair dryers for both locker rooms, visited other schools in the area to get new ideas for our school, continued to work towards purchas- ing another scoreboard for the gym. and boycotted hot dogs in the lunchroom! To pay for some of these improvements, they sold Cardinal notebooks. Through the Stu- dent Council's hard work and dedication, they have been able to accomplish more in this past year, than in previous years. L to Ri F to B, J. Jones. K. Wittmershaus. S. Streeck. M. The Future Flomemakers of America were small in number but very en- thusiastic and active. The year actu- ally started when Susan Streeck be- came District 4 V.P. at last year's state conference. Along with Mrs. Lee. Sue had a very busy summer. In June Sue a Leadership workshop and July saw Sue and Mrs. Lee attending the National FHA Meeting in St. Louis. The beginning of school saw the involvement of all FFIA members. The district 4 fall meeting was fast approaching and Sue along with her district officer was in charge. The FHA officers attended a planning meeting where Karla Sprain volun- teered to lead a concern session. The delegates to the fall meeting came home with new ideas and leadership skills. A fall candle sale helped add to the FHA funds along with selling concessions at all home girls’ volleyball and basketball games. Three rollerskating parties sponsored by the FHA kept things on a light note. Mrs. Lee and Sue attended their second state execu- tive council meeting in Jan. The next few months were busyl Sue was working hard to organize her responsibilities for the 1981 State Conf. to be held at the Convention Center in La Crosse. Be- sides aiding Sue, the other FHA members were working hard to earn points to travel to Chanhassen. Some earned points by sell- ing candy bars after school while others helped with FHA week, the style show, and the banquet. In Feb. FHA week was highlighted with a carnation sale and a breakfast for FFA mem- bers. April 5,6,7 saw S. Streeck, K. Sprain, C. Horstman. T. Davis, and S. Hanson attend the St. Conf. Under the guidance of a new st. adv. Nina Jo Look, the conference once again was a success. Under the leadership of Karla Sprain, next year is sure to be a success. 56 FFA FLOURISHES The past year was a good one for the chapter’s president Bart Horstman and the other outstanding officers and committee chairpersons. The three star president’s award is given to the president of the chapter that had superior ratings in safety, BOAC. and Food for America. The safety project consisted of demonstrating to the Kindergarten classes the proper way to ride a school bus. It was very successful and received many compliments on the excellent performance and presentation. The BOAC project consisted of pruning trees at the elementary school and testing local farmer's soil. I. Equity first place team. B. Horstman. R. Langrehr. C. Christopherson. B. Langman. 3. The chapter also goes one step further and takes them out to area farms to show them what the farms are like. At the banquet, many members received awards for their outstanding leadership and services to the chapter. Each year the chapter nominates two delegates to the convention at Green Lake, and this past year they were T. Manke and D. Langrehr. YEAR OF CHANGES The faculty at B.H.S. has several traits in common: their efforts to provide the best possible education, pride in student achieve- ments. and favorite sayings which are in- cluded with the pictures. Another common element for the faculty this year was changes, with new teachers: Mr. Halverson in social studies. Mrs. Dunphy in the library, and Mrs. Johnson in junior-high English. Oth- er changes continued throughout the year as Mr. Schlies became the guidance counselor, Mrs. Fleckenstein became Mrs. Jacobson, Mz. The services pro- vided by these people include getting us here and home again safely, cooking and serving our meals, cleaning, and answering our endless questions. This past year we lost the office services of Mrs. Althoff. but happily it was to have her first child. Replacing Mrs. Althoff in the high school of- fice was Mrs. Lusk. Not pictured is Miss Cathy Clements, bookkeeper. 81 The first day back to school on August 25, the class of 1984 had their first experience as Senior High students. As we started our Freshmen year, we became familiar with the new detention rule, which meant you enjoyed the privilege of staying after school for thirty minutes. As Senior High students we could now attend dances and participate in more school activities. We were led for our Freshmen year by Pres. Joanne Simpson. Vice Pres. Scott Stekel. and Treas. Paul: 113 114 THE IRISH IMPROVEMENT In 1975, a new face appeared in B.H.S. with no idea of what he was getting in to. Six years later, we see the many im- provements he has made. He has improved the quality of the yearbook tremendously, as well as increasing the number of pages by more than fourty. Besides being the yearbook advisor, he has spent many hours working with the High Quiz Bowl team. Forensic Team, Newspaper Staff and has put in many hours preparing for his numerous English classes and thinking of ways to use his authority as Vice- Principal wisely. For all his hard work and dedication we. the 1980-81 Echo Staff, dedicate this yearbook to our advisor and friend Mr. Michael J. Cullen (Mick.) 115 117 GOLD PATRONS These Patrons support the Bangor High School Echo and become Gold Patrons with our largest contribution of $50.00.
