1961 ECHO BANGOR HIGH SCHOOL BANGOR, WISCONSIN FOREWORD The 1961 edition of the ECHO has been published with but one objective: to capture a year between its covers. It has been a year of pleasant relationships, parties, athletics, plays, and classes in which each individual has participated either fully or partially. May all the memories herein recorded bring to the minds of all who glance through these pages, the glad days as well as the not-so-glad days. Looking back at these events, may we realize that they have played a most significant part in the life of each and every individual at Bangor High 2 DEDICATION With deep appreciation for his service to us as a teacher and friend; for his willingness to help us in whatever we strived to do; for all the extra work he has done in helping to make the dream of our junior prom become a reality; for his determination and desire to help us pave our way for the years ahead; we, the seniors, dedicate this, the 1961 ECHO, to COACH LEE PAUL. 3 ADMINISTRATION Members of the Class of 1961: The end of a school year means that another class has completed high school. This year it is you, members of the Class of '61. We, members of your high school faculty, share with you the feeling of pride, joy, and satisfaction that are derived from successfully completing the require- ments of a high school diploma. If we were able to prescribe and control your future we would direct that you be favored with good health, that you attain worthy goals, and that your life be as free from tragedy and disappointment as is humanly possible. Best wishes to each of you. SCHOOL BOARD 4 FRED ZABEL Treasurer FLOYD JONES President JOHN BOSSARD Clerk W. C. In September of 1957, forty-six green freshmen walked down the halls of Bangor High School. We were initiated late in the year by the sophomores due to the reconstruc- tion going on in the school. Later in the school year a Sadie Hawkins return party was held for the Sophomores. The class officers during the first year were: President, Allen Aichele; Vice-President, Dick Schroeder; Secretary, Judy Kaehler; and Treasurer, Dorothy Jernander. Our student council representatives were Butch Chapiewsky and Arlene Schmitz. Judy Kaehler was the homecoming representative. Carol Jandt represented our class as a cheerleader. In the fall of 1958 we came back as mighty sophomores. We were forty-eight strong. In the early part of the school year an initiation party for the freshmen was held. The officers that year were: President, Ralph Jones; Vice-President, Dixie Antony; Secretary, Sharon Souchek; Treasurer, Lynda Young. Doug Antony and Barbara Shelmi- dine were our student council representatives. The homecoming representative was Bar- bara Shelmidine. Judy Kaehler and Carol Jandt were our cheerleaders. We came back as juniors in 1959 after a short summer. At this time we were forty- one in number. This year was filled with work and fun. On April 21, I960, we presented our Junior Class Play, a three-act comedy entitled Charley's Aunt. On April 30, I960 another big moment arrived. We presented the Junior Prom. Our theme was Blue Hawaii. The color scheme was basically blue highlighted with other pastel colors. Much work was put into the false ceiling, volcano, palm trees, and hut . The results were rewarding --our Prom was hailed by many as the prettiest prom ever held at Bangor. The prom king was Doug Antony; Judy Kaehler was queen. Members of the court were: Allen Aichele, Judy Schaller; Dennis Gunderson, Dixie Antony; Stan Schal- ler, Barbara Shelmidine; Arnie Schmitz, Carol Jandt. The cheerleader for our junior year was Judy Kaehler, and the homecoming represen- tative was Carol Jandt. The Badger State representatives were Dick Schroeder and Ruth Ann Johnson. In September of I960 we entered the halls of Bangor High for our last school year. There were thirty-eight of us. Our officers for this last important year were: President, Dick Schroeder; Vice-President, Gary Schaller; Secretary, Judy Kaehler; Treasurer, Bonnie Pfaff. Doug Antony was selected as the student council president; our class rep- resentatives were Jim Path and Judy Schaller. Our Senior Class Play, presented on October 28, was a great success. Lock, Stock, and Lipstick was a comedy in three acts. At the time of this printing the seniors are looking forward to a rewarding year con- cluding with a class trip and, of course, graduation. This brings to a close the history of the graduating class of 1961. These were four years of both work and fun which we shall never forget. 8 — SALLY CRAIG A friend of everyone. Band 2. The first step to make this year successful was the election of class officers. The following were chosen: John Berg, President; Gwen Kreunen. Vice-President; Bill Monfort, Treasurer; Karen Wegner, Secretary. The big event of the year, of course, was the Junior Prom. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. T. Elsen J. Erickson J. We soon took our place along with the upper- classmen in curricular and extra-curricular activities. The first few days we wandered aimlessly through the halls against traffic, but we soon settled down and got to work. For our class officers, we elected Don Manke, President; August Zabel, Vice-President; Susan Arentz, Sec- retary; George Stintzi, Treasurer. ONE ACT PLAY Mr. Thicke, advisor, Mike Olson, Bill Monfort, Steve Zinn, George Stintzi. 32 JUNIOR PROM As we journey into the past, we remember that memorable night of April 30, I960. I know that no junior will ever forget how diligently we worked to get every little detail of our decora- tions incorporated to present our theme Blue Hawaii. The traditional palm trees of an island beach were used as floor and table decorations The walls and ceilings were decorated to give us the impression of a spacious sky. A vaicano hut, and silhouettes carried out our theme. Our royal couple for the evening, King Doug Antony and his charming Queen, Judy Kaeh- ler, reigned over the dance. Music was furnished by Don Kaye and his Orchestra. In the roya! court were Judy Schaller and Allen Aichele, Carol Jandt and Arnie Schmitz, Barbara Shelmidine and Gary Schaller, Lillian Anthony and Dennis Gunderson. The evening was considered a great success and all the couples went their separate ways, but the memory of the big event was still fresh in each and everyone's mind and always will remain so. 7 JUNIOR CLASS PLAY - CHARLEY’S Al NT Jack Chesney.............Doug Antony Charles Wykeham..........Ralph Jones Brassett.................Arnold Schmitz Lord Fancourt Babberly . . The homecom- ing parade took place Saturday afternoon. The successful parade consisted of class floats and other units. The Senior float won the traveling trophy and the first prize of $5. The game with Melrose followed the parade. Jim Path ran 90 yards for Bangor's only touchdown. In the evening a dance was held in our gym. Lindy Shannon, LaCrosse disc jockey, provided the music. A great deal of effort and work went into our first football homecoming. The results were rewarding, however, for our homecoming was termed a success. BASKETBALL HOMECOMING On February 17, 1961 Bangor held its basketball homecoming after defeating Mindoro by a score of 63 to 54. During the half-time of the game, the class of 1936 introduced its members and presented some interesting facts about their class. The homecoming activities continued after the game. Dancing was held from 10:30 to 1:00. The music was provided by Don Kaye and His Orchestra. The Grand March was held at 1 1:00. Queen Judy Schaller and King Dick Schroeder were crowned by Doug Antony, president of the student council. The class representatives and their escorts were: Marie Rondorf and Jim Path, Seniors; Nancy Torgerud and Tim Anderson, Juniors; Lois Evans and Mike Schroeder, Sophomores, and Monica Neisen and Mike Olson, Freshmen.
