No one knows what lies Dedication Each year the senior class at Bandys High School chooses a member of the faculty to which they dedicate the annual. The person is chosen on the basis of qualities that they possess. Lead- ership, friendship, and understanding are all qua- lities that the students look for in the person. This year we have chosen a very special mem- ber of the faculty to award this honor. She has left an impression on many of us that we will surely remember. She has earned the respect of her students and fellow workers through her con- stant concern and help. Her students can relate to her because of her cheerful and dynamic per- sonality. For all of these qualities that we are aware and all the ones that we are not, the senior class of 1984 would like to dedicate the ’84 Tro- jan to Mrs. Witherspoon. 18 rim “Mi;' WCOKKStL. Their only win of the season came against Mooresville. The team had a lot of injuries that cre- ated a problem for them. The team struggled through the season with a 1-6 record. The won-loss record may have been disappointing, but the hard work and dedi- cation of the players and coaches were not. Forrest Blake put in a lot of effort as the coach of the team. The team practiced long and hard from late summer to October. Rodney Helton and Roger Torrence shared the role of point guard and lead the offense from out front. Senior David Shubert sparked the defense with his sharp reflexes and quick hands. Sophomore Stanley Daniels and freshman Ronald Conner made huge contributions inside on offense and defense. Junior Dwayne Harvey also came through in the clutches with his rebounding and inside game. All the players made contributions to the team and helped the team to another winning season. Under first-year coach Bob Kelly the team began the year with a string of losses to 3A and 4A teams. But once conference play started the team was hard to beat. After early conference losses to Newton and Bunker Hill, the team began a winning streak which culminated with big wins over Maiden, Bunker Hill, and Newton. With a week remaining in the season they were tied for first. The team was led by sopho- mores Gary Major, David Cox, and Chris Hester. Suffered Disappointing Season The Trojan baseball team, coached bp Randy Bur- roughs, had a disappointing season last year. Many of the Trojans games were close until the last innings and generated a lot of excitement for the fans. The team always demonstrated good sportsmanship and a desire to win. The team s morale was sometimes dampered, but this never kept the team from giving a maximum effort. Even though they didn't enjoy losing, they never forgot that the object of the game was to have fun. The season highlight was a 7-6 win over Maiden. The team was led by seniors Scott Painter, Greg Dun- can, and Mitch Valentine. All three players were of great importance to the team and will be missed next year. However, juniors Cray Carpenter, Darren Rowe, Jeff Blackburn, and sophomore Dwayne Harvey will be ready to fill in as leaders for the team next year. Every- one on the team had a role to perform and contributed to the total team effort. Although the future is unpredictable, it sure looks promising for the Trojan baseball team. Baseball This was the first year that Bandys had a Junior Varsity Baseball team. The team was comprised of freshmen and sophomores who were lacking in the experience needed to play varsity baseball. They learned about the basic funda- mentals along with gaining the experience of playing. The team played approximately half the schedule that the varsity team played. The skills that they learned will better benefit them when they move up to playing varsity baseball. The team was coached by Mr. Forrest Blake. He spent a lot of his time trying to help them to gain the proper background to play baseball. The players put in a lot of hard work and effort to try and make the team a success. Through the effort of this years players the J.V. Baseball may become a permanent sport at Bandys High School. Opposite Page: Top Left: This runner crossed home for this run. Foard. The team then advanced to the state play-offs. They played well winning 6 to 0 over East Wilkes and 11 to 4 over Bessemer City. They then lost in the quarterfinals to a tough Franklin squad. Through the season they were led by the play of All-Conference performers Beth Laney, Cindy Murray, Donna Jones, Patrice Lineberger, and Patti Beatty. With many veterans returning next year and a fine crop of upcoming freshmen, the team can expect to have another sucessful season. 118 Opposite Page: Top Left: Donna Jones attempted a double play. The team, coached by Randy Lowman, finished sixth in the conference meet at the end of the season. What the team lacked in experience, they more than made up for in guts and determination. The team competed hard in every event at the meets. They always gave a maximum effort and maintained a good code of sportsmanship. Some outstanding performances were handed in by seniors Robert Harper, Pat Plunkett, and Roger McClain. Robert Harper also qualified to compete in the sectionals where he placed fourth in the 400 meters. Sophomore Larry Johnson also contribut- ed to the total effort. Besides the individual efforts, there were some team contributions in the relay races that proved beneficial. Although the track team didn’t have one of its best seasons, next year promises a brighter future. Opposite Page: Top Right: Larry Johnson pulled ahead in this race. The Trojans won their first several matches with ease setting up a showdown with Newton-Conover, who also had an undefeated record. The team won a hard fought 5-4 match over the Red Devils. They completed the sea- son with two more victories behind all-conference per- formers Bradley Harris, Vic Carroll, Chuck Lewis, and Mark Rogers. The season continued with a three- way tie with Newton-Conover and Cherryville in the conference tournament. The team competed in the sectionals at Shelby. Varsity Cheerleaders Show Enthusiasm A contributing factor to the success of any athletic team is the support that the fans give them. The Varsity Cheerleaders made sure that this job was accomplished. These girls kept the crowds cheering for the players as they performed on the football field or on the basketball court. Our cheerleaders are a selected group of young ladies who are chosen very carefully from the student body. These girls must show school spirit, enthusiasm, and good sportsmanship. Leadership is the most important quality of the squad, because they must help keep the fans supporting their teams even in the toughest situations. Being a cheerleader may sound easy but this sometimes can be a very difficult responsibility. These girls put in many long, hard hours of practice to prepare new and improved cheers. They also had to exemplify good conduct because they are examples to their peers and to the spectators. The 1983-84 varsity cheerleading squad consisted of nine girls. They were in parades and competed in various cheerleading compe- titions. These girls performed their job very well and proved that they were very fine representatives of our school and community. Cheerleaders The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders gained experience as they cheered their teams to victory. These girls worked extremeley hard during the J. V. football and basketball seasons. They put in many hours of practice to prepare themselves for each game. The cheerleaders were always there to lead the crowd and to add to the atmosphere of the game. 126 This Page Top: Junior Varsity Cheer- leaders, left to right. This meal is planned and served by the hard working lunchroom personnel. We would like to say thank you for a job well done. The student body depended great- ly on these fine women, throughout the year. 154 Support Groups The bus drivers and janitors are a vital part of our school organization. They sometimes go unrecognized, but without them the difference would be noticed. The bus drivers are a group of volunteered students who have chosen to assist their school in transporting school chil- dren back and forth to school. Many students depend on them morning and afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Parker have proven to be the very best at their jobs. They always keep the school clean and tidy. We appreciate what these indi- viduals have done for the school. 155 Students 156 1 e i c a r i 158 CLASS OFFICERS: President............................Jeff McRee Vice-President............Bradley Harris Secretary-Treasurer..........Lori Lewis Reporter..................Wayne McCrary Historian..............Barbara Lineberger Prophet....................Regina Little Testator...................Lisa Sigmon Poet....................... Blanche Story Huffman 1THE Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake 4Yea, though 1 walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. sThou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 196 In Memory ... James Rod Cable Crossing The Bar Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me. And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the bound less deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell. When I embark; For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.
