Matheson Each year the senior class selects a faculty member to whom to dedicate the annual. Their decision is based upon leadership, dedi- cation to the student body and most importantly friendship. As we reflect on our years here at Bandys, one man has made a lasting impression on us. His friendship has helped us to mature and become better persons. As a teacher he has given us a better understanding of history and taught us a little more about ourselves in psychology. As a coach of the Girls Varsity Basketball team, he has brought two consecutive State Championships home to Bandys. He also helps to coach the J.V. and Varsity Football teams. The Senior class of ’83 is proud to dedicate this annual to Mr. David M. Matheson. Dedication 3 Being a Student At Bandys Meant Being on the Move ... ... Defensively, the team proved to be one of the stronger in the SD-7 conference. The offensive punch was hampered by injuries to players in key positions. With the adversities, we still played all opponents tough, losing by only a small margin. The breaks never came our way which resulted in a T9 season. 92 Varsity Football TROJAXS, TMjJSj TROJAI THOME troths, 'TROJUS TROJUS , , TROJAXS i TROJAXS « « J TR0JA S t TROJMS|A4T ® TROJAl TSOJAX? trojaxs TROJAXS TROJAXS trojaxs .TROJAXS, Opposite Page: Top: Robert Bell took the hand-off from Dwayne Harvey. Football 95 Girls Win 4 The Lady Trojans won their fourth straight Conference Cham- pionship. The undefeated Lady Trojans finished the regular season with a 22-0 record. Led by All-State Beverly Greenard, the team met with basically little competition in non-conference and conference op- ponents. At the seasons end, they looked forward to further competi- tion. Competition came in the form of conference, district and regional play. After winning the conference and district tournaments, the Lady Trojans advanced to the western regionals. After defeating Sylva- Webster they were eliminated in the finals by future state champs Monroe Parkwood. Opposite Page: Top: All-Stater Beverly Greenard went inside for two. Varsity Girls’ Basketball 97 —1 OB OB k «X Trojans Rebuild This year was a year of rebuilding for the defending State Champions. With the loss of four starters from last year’s team, the Trojans struggled in tough SD-7 games. Many games were won and lost by a margin of a few points. Non-conference opponents proved to be no match for the Trojans. This point emphasized the strength of the SD-7 in which two teams, including the Trojans, were ranked in the top ten of the state 2-A poll. In the Conference Tourna- ment the doubles team of Donna Jones and Patti Beatty won first place; thereby clinching second place in the tournament. Sonya Settlemyre advanced to the quarter finals before being eliminated by the number one seed. Donna Jones, Patti Beatty, and Sonya Settlemyre were se- lected All-Conference. After breaking out to a 5-0 start, the team won a hard fought match against New- ton-Conover. As a result of the 5-4 win, the confer- ence championship seemed certain. The team fin- ished with a perfect record of 8-0. Leading the way were all-conference perform- ers, Jeff Queen, Kenny Burdick, Jonathon Huff- man, and Bradley Harris. Vic Carroll, Mark Rog- ers and the others contributed to the total team effott. Despite finishing second in the conference tour- nament, the Trojans brought home the doubles and singles championships. The team then ad- vanced to the Sectionals where it had it’s best ever finish of 5th. To top off this excellent season Mr. L. A. Walker was named coach of the year in SD-7 boys tennis. 106 Tennis Opposite Page: Top: “The Doctor showed us how it was done. The team tried hard but could manage no higher than one second place finish. With the loss of only six sen- iors, next year looks brighter. This year’s team was led by senior tri- captains Eric Wyatt, Todd Goins, and Terry Bowman. All-Conference Robert Harper made a great contribution by winning all but two of his races, including the 400 meter run in the district meet. They were led by All-Conference Benny Harris and fellow seniors Phil Brown, Tim Hicks, and David Smith. Although experiencing a rough season, they never gave up and went on to play State contender, Fred T. Foard, in a close 3-2 ballgame. Baseball 111 Softball Team Advances to State Playoffs After a disappointing season last year, the Trojan softball team bounced back to win the SD-7 conference championship with a 16-2 re- cord. They then advanced to the first round of the state play-offs and beat Alleghany 5-0. In the second round, they lost a heartbreaking game to East Wilkes, 3-5. They finished with a 17-3 over- all record. Next year’s team shows just as much promise if not more, having eight starters returning from this year’s team. The only starters graduating were All-Conference players, Janet Deal and Rhonda Lee. Six of the eight returning starters also received All-Conference awards, and they are as follows: Patti Beatty, Beverly Greenard, Donna Jones, Patrice Lineberger, Cindy Murray and Beth Laney. 112 Softball Opposite Page: Top Right: Patti Beatty connected for a base hit.
