Special People at Bandys This year at Bandys, we had some very special people who received the following honors: Laura Smyre (top right) and Gary Jones (top left) were chosen from Bandys High School as representatives to Girls State, held at UNC — Greensboro, and Boys State, held at Wake Forest, respectively. There, they attend- ed many political lectures and seminars to learn how our govern- ment operates and how it copes with world problems. Darlene McCombs and Gary Jones (bottom right) were nominees from Bandys, becoming candidates for the John Motley Morehead Scholarship to UNC — Chapel Hill. They were nominated on the basis of their character, leadership qualities, and athletic and academic standings. After going through successive interviews, the most qualified students are chosen. Neither Darlene nor Gary was chosen to advance to the district competition, but they were both very honored to have been nominated. Elizabeth McKay (bottom left) participated in the 1980 Miss Teen-Age North Carolina Pageant held in Winston-Salem this past summer. She received a $100 savings bond and a trophy for winning the speech portion of this contest. 16
