Lowman As in the years past, the Senior class selected a faculty member who served them above and beyond the call of duty. Their decision was based upon qualities of leadership, friendship, and dedication to the student body. However, one man has stood out in our minds as we look back on our past years at Bandys. He was always willing to listen when we needed a friend. He gave us 100% dedication and helped us greatly when we needed help the most. As a teacher, he taught us many new and interesting subjects. He has given us insight into the fields of science and health. He also participated with the students in friendly games of basketball and volleyball during P.E. The Senior class of ’81 is very proud that the 1981 Trojan is dedicated to Mr. Randall Eugene Lowman. 3 enjoying miniature golf . . . 6 7 8 Practicing Powder-Puff football...... 10 participating in the game . . . 11 12 13 Awards Day ’80 Honor Graduates On Friday, May 30, 1980, Awards Day was held in the gym- nasium. This day was set aside to honor students for their out- standing achievements. The seniors received recognition as they marched into the gym. Some were awarded scholarships, while others received honors in different areas — not only the seniors were recognized, but also outstanding underclassmen. As this day served to honor the Class of ’80 before the student body, it will remain as a memorable moment in their lives. There, they attend- ed many political lectures and seminars to learn how our govern- ment operates and how it copes with world problems. Darlene McCombs and Gary Jones (bottom right) were nominees from Bandys, becoming candidates for the John Motley Morehead Scholarship to UNC — Chapel Hill. They were nominated on the basis of their character, leadership qualities, and athletic and academic standings. After going through successive interviews, the most qualified students are chosen. Neither Darlene nor Gary was chosen to advance to the district competition, but they were both very honored to have been nominated. Elizabeth McKay (bottom left) participated in the 1980 Miss Teen-Age North Carolina Pageant held in Winston-Salem this past summer. She received a $100 savings bond and a trophy for winning the speech portion of this contest. 16 Top: The Junior Marshals (left to right): Gary Jones, Janet Robinson, Lori Granger, Mitchell Buff, Lori Mathis, Nathan Caldwell, Tina Yancey, Darlene McCombs, Laura Smyre, and Allan Caldwell. They were chosen by their academic achievements. The Junior Marshals were in charge of the graduation exercises in which most of the Honor Graduates had speaking parts. 17 WACHOVIA CUP NUMBER 1 IN ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE FOR STATE 2-A HIGH SCHOOLS Pride and Character — Trademark of This Year’s Football Team Two words can be used to describe this past years football team — pride and character. This was demonstrated by their unwillingness to quit, es- pecially when the going got tough. Hard work in pre- season training helped the team become much more physical than in previous years. Although the team did not continue on to a state playoff berth, they were contenders throughout the season. The playoff hopes looked promising for the Trojans, as they went into the last game in a three- way tie for first place with Bunker Hill and Maiden. These hopes were dampened by the loss to Fred T. Foard. Ricky Sigmon, who led the team in blocking, was chosen First Team All-Conference while Eric McCombs, Mark Sigmon, Tim Smith, and Phil Rowe were chosen for the Second All-Conference Team. Ending the season with a 1-7 record, the J.V. Trojans gained much experience in their close losses. This experience should help as they mature into varsity-caliber players. Several of the games were lost in the last quarter. The only win was over arch-rival Maiden Blue Devils. Outstanding performances were shown by Pat Plunkett and Roger McClain, who won Most Valuable Player and the Gary Butler Award, respectively. 22 Middle Right: Darin Little and Greg Duncan combined their ef- forts on this tackle. Girls’ Tennis Undefeated Again The Girls’ Tennis Team vir- tually repeated last year’s season. Once again they ended the season with an (8-0) record. They also won the Conference Tournament, where Robin Campbell won first place in singles competition, and Janet Deal won second place. The team then went to the Sectional Tournament. Here, as a doubles team, Janet Deal and Robin Campbell won second place. These two girls advanced to state. Although they didn’t win, it was an honor to have gone that far in the competition. •-a— ' 24 Opposite Page: Top Right: (left to right) Robin Campbell, Janet Deal, and Donna Jones went undefeated through the conference season. SECOND IN STA TE The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team finished the season with a 29-3 record as they lost their final game to Bunn High School in the State 2-A Finals. The boys participated in the Christmas Tournament at Freedom High and lost only to R.S. Central in the final game. They won the Regular Season Conference, the Conference Tournament, the District Tourna- ment, and the Regional Tournament before going to the State Playoffs. Coach Bill Bost was a big inspiration to the team. Vernon Odom was the leading scorer and was chosen as All-State and All Catawba Valley. Bryan Harvey was also chosen as All Catawba Valley. ! 7150 I winner WACHOVIA CUP 26 Opposite Page: Top Left: These Trojans boxed out for this rebound. Ending the season with a 28-1 record, these girls received ample reward for their hard work. The only loss of the season came when they lost to East Lincoln. Coached by Mr. Mike Matheson, the girls won the Regular Season Con- ference, the Conference Tournament, the District Tournament, and the Regional Tournament before winning the State Title. Standouts on the team were Beverly Greenard, Janet Deal, Kim Gabriel, Robin Campbell, and Lisa Martin. 28 Opposite Page: Bottom Left: Darlene McCombs added two more to the score. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ junior varsity basket- ball team looked strong this year under the direction of Coach Bobby Lutz. Although they didn’t win every game, they showed strength and spirit on the court. The experience they gained should help them in future years as basketball players. GIRLS’ HAD GOOD SEASON Under the leadership of Coach Bobby Lutz, the girls’ junior var- sity basketball team had one of the best seasons ever. The girls gained experience for future com- petition as teammates and in- dividuals. The team consisted of three returning sophomores and eight new freshmen. Next year’s season looks to be as good as or better than this year’s was. Top: Donna Jones took this jump shot from the foul line. Middle: Cindy Murray tried to out-jump this opponent. They spent many long hours practicing and learn- ing cheers under the supervision of Mrs. Debbie Mot- singer. They also went to cheerleading camp during the summer. The Varsity Cheerleaders proved to be an essential part of the games. The Varsity Cheerleaders were as follows: Cap- tain—Sandy Cook, Co-Captain—Tammie Shook, Tina Fletcher, Alicia Farrer, Renee Ellis, Lori Cline, Sharon Little, and Lori Hollar. J.V. Cheerleaders The J.V. Cheerleaders, super- vised by Mrs. Nancy Mack and Mrs. Freida Drum, practiced long and hard so they could contribute to school spirit at the J.V. games. They backed our team by creating enthusiasm in the crowd. The J.V. Cheerleaders were as follows: Captain — Angie Schronce, Co-Captain—Debbie Smith, Julie Hass, Linda Dover, Angela Wright, and Barbara Lineberger. 33 Track Team was Inexperienced The track team this past season was young, but much improved over the previous year. Of the 30 members on the team, only six were Seniors, which should help some next year. Out of the nine regular season meets, Bandys won one and finished second three times. The season ended with the con- ference meet at East Lincoln. Out of eight participating SD-7 schools, Bandys finished fifth. Leading scorers for the season were Danny Little, Scott Kale, Ben Plunkett, Steven “Seymore” Eades, and Aldric Fishe. Danny Little and Scott Kale were chosen as All-Conference. 34 Opposite Page: Top Right: Andy Setzer showed form in the shot put. Bottom Left: Ben Plunkett placed first in the triple jump. Finishing the season with a record of (6-4), the boys’ tennis team had a very competitive year. The team only lost one player, and all the other members will be returning with higher goals. Both of the team’s All Con- ference players, Gary Jones and Kenny Burdick, will again try to play up to All Conference stan- dards. The tennis team’s future looks very promising for the up- coming year. 36 This Page: Top: The Tennis Team (left to right) Standing: Scott Rogers, Eric Houser, Gary Jones, Bradley Bolick, Jeff Queen. Baseball Team Improved With Experience Due to a lot of hustle and the desire to win, the baseball team was able to improve their record from (6-9) to (8-6) and just missed the state playoffs to Cherryville, which finished 2nd in the state playoff competition. Much of this improvement was also due to the fast pitching of Bryan Harvey, who made All- Conference. The team’s future looks to be just as good, if not better than this past year, because of the returning of most of the players. 38 This Page: Top Left: Jerry Fogleman ate dust on a close play. Not only did the team have an outstanding record (10-4 for the season and 14-6 overall), but they also displayed excellent sportsmanship on and off the field. Coach Marilyn Clark called the team “a great bunch of dedicated kids that worked their hearts out to go to the playoffs, and to the playoffs they went. We are looking forward to another great year in softball. We only lost three players and there are some super kids coming up to replace them.” The advancement of the team into state playoff competition contributed to the school’s receiving the State 2-A WACHOVIA CUP FOR ATHLETIC SUPERIORITY. We were proud to have had four team members named All-Conference. They were Chantae Sherrill, Robin Campbell, Rhonda Lee, and Janet Deal. We wish these four and the rest of the team much luck in the upcoming season. 40 Opposite Page: Top Left: Rhonda Lee delivered one of many strikes. Middle: Donna Jones attempted a double play. Bottom: A great stretch was need- ed to get this player out. 41 Wrestling The Wrestling Team this year was in a stage of rebuilding. Since most members were new- comers, they had to gain the experience needed for winning. Perhaps next year will be the result of their hard work this year. Top: Tim Miller went for a standing cradle. Bottom: The Wrestling Team (left to right) First Row: Scott Lowman, Scott Shepherd, David Smith, Doug Gajus, Jeff Little. Second Row: Tim Miller, Nathan Caldwell, Jeff McRee, Larry Boone. Third Row: Ricky Sigmon, Dwight Connor, Calvin Whisnant. 42 Clubs Promote School Spirit The Monogram Club is a club for students who have lettered in a sport. Mr. Walker is the club’s ad- visor. This year, the Monogram Club sponsored the powder-puff football game. The lady seniors turned out to be the number one team, and everyone enjoyed this event. The Pep Club, advised by Mrs. Clark, really generated spirit this year. The members sold spirit pins, banners and even megaphones to raise money and add more pep to our school. In other words, they put forth much effort to back our team and to help out in any way possible. Top: For names of the Monogram Club members see page in Ad Sec- tion. Middle: In order to join the Monogram Club, new members had to become “Monogram Man” for a day. Bottom: For names of Pep Club members see page in Ad Section. The unique magic of the Junior-Senior Prom filled the air as everyone arrived in for- mal attire. Decorative rainbow colors set the stage to emphasize the theme, “This One’s For You.” “The Sixth Of May” provided a variety of dance music to suit most everyone’s moods and pleasures. A select group of sophomores provided a break in the action by performing various skits. The special honor of King and Queen of the Prom was bestowed upon Todd Sherrill and Jeanie Korn. As the night drew to a close, everyone left with special memories and experiences never to be forgotten. 50 Opposite Page: Top Right: These couples enjoyed this moment of closeness. The theme of the evening was “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. This was the first year the annual staff sponsored this dance, and they were pleased with the outcome since they worked so hard to make it a success. After having their pictures made, couples took to the floor to dance. They got down to the music of Rick Reynolds, who played rock and soul as well as slow music. Around 9:00, the floor was cleared for the Christmas Court. Janet Robinson introduced the court and announced the first runners-up to be a tie between Lori Mathis and Becky Reader, so they both shared this honor. Then came the moment we had all been waiting for. It was now time to crown the Christmas Queen. The gym was silent as Janet an- nounced, “The 1980 Christmas Queen is Miss Barbara Eades.” After the court had their traditional dance, everyone went to the lobby for refreshments. Overall, the dance was a great success, and no one could forget that magical atmosphere of this special evening. 52 Opposite Page: Top: Joel Josey and Angie Caldwell got into the swing of Bottom Left: The chaperones things. Not only was there the usual excitement of a foot- ball game felt as Bandys defeated the foe of the night, East Lincoln, 20-7, in a well played game; but the excitement was also felt as half-time neared and the tension began to build. Who would be chosen 1980 Homecoming Queen? The SAE Club was in charge of the activities on the field. Their job was to see that everything ran smoothly; from carrying the platform on and off the fie, to the traditional ride of the Queen. The excitement climaxed when Lori Mathis announced: “The second runner-up is Miss Kim Gabriel. The first runner-up is Miss Sandy Cook.” Then the magical mo- ment came as she announced: “The 1980 Homecoming Queen is Miss Tammie Shook.” Ending with tears of joy and much applause, the half- time activities were over. After a victorious action-packed game, almost everyone stayed for the Homecoming Dance, featuring the Howell Brothers from Cherryville. The dance was sponsored by the 1981 Trojan annual staff. For many, it was a night to be remembered. 54 Opposite Page: Top Left (left to right) Class Represen- tatives and their Escorts, Senior to Freshman, respectively: Bryan Harvey, Lisa Martin, Kelly Drum, Caroline Dellinger, Greg Duncan, Jackie Buchanan, Kelly Hilton, Regina Little.
