French — The Language and The Culture In French class, the students were taught the basics of this foreign language and its culture. The French I students learned to speak, read, and write the exquisite language of France. The second year of French consisted of teaching the students a more ad- vanced study of the French language and French culture. This French II class made various pro- jects throughout the year which ex- pressed their gained knowledge of the French language and culture. The study of the French culture also included French architecture. As a result, the French II classes spent a day at Biltmore House and Gardens. 28

English Stressed Individualism English was a course which stressed individualism. As stu- dents increased their writing and speaking abilities, they were en- couraged to be individuals, to be creative and to do their own thing. Individualism and creativity were further developed in the drama- debate class, as students were en- couraged to use their speaking abilities to their greatest advan- tage. 30
