Morehead Nominees And Boys’ State Representatives Each year, the John Motley Morehead Foundation gives several four-year scholarships to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to top-ranked high school students. The students are nominated by committees from their individual schools on the basis of their character and leadership qualities as well as their athletic and academic standings. Then through a process of elimina- tion and successive interviews, the most qualified students are chosen for the scholarships. This year, Bandys had two nominees: James Burgess and Todd Sherrill (Top). Unfortunately, neither Todd nor James was chosen to advance to the district competition. However, both of them were honored to have been nominated. Lee Black and James Burgess (Bottom) were chosen to attend North Carolina Boys’ State at Wake Forest University in Winston- Salem. During a week spent at Wake Forest University, they, along with representatives from other North Carolina high schools, set up a mock government, held mock elections, and proposed and passed bills for the imaginary state.
