Lineberger Over the past four years our senior class has been through many changes. We. as a class, have struggled through difficult times and needed the help of teachers along the way. As our senior class looks back upon the years we realize that one man has helped us a great deal. This man has laughed and frowned with us and helped us throughout the few years that he has been a member of our faculty. He has encouraged us in our studies, helped us with our problems and has been there for us to talk to. He was our friend and our advisor when we needed him. This man joined our faculty only three years ago and since then has gained the respect of the students as well as the community. His department has grown in its ac- tivities and will be expanded because of his efforts. The senior class of '80 is very proud to dedicate the 1980 Trojan to Mr. Marvin F.dsel Lineberger. 2 The life of a student is comprised of more than just classrooms, books, and homework. It involves places other than just the school building and people other than just the teachers and administration. A stu- dent’s life is comprised of his activities whenever and wherever they take place. A student’s life is ... ... having good times at the beach ... ifftf (A lyV I t IV 6 . .. going back to nature while camping . .. ...other activities, whenever, wherever, and whatever they may be ... Awards, Scholarships And Honors Academics Awards Day was held on Thurs- day, May 31, 1979. On this day, the seniors were honored by marching into the gymnasium. The student body was addressed by several honor graduates. Also recognized were the seniors receiv- ing scholarships. Also, on this day many people were honored and given awards. Awards were presented to out- standing students. As this day served to honor the Class of ’79 before the entire stu- dent body, it will stand as a memorable moment in their lives. The students are nominated by committees from their individual schools on the basis of their character and leadership qualities as well as their athletic and academic standings. Then through a process of elimina- tion and successive interviews, the most qualified students are chosen for the scholarships. This year, Bandys had two nominees: James Burgess and Todd Sherrill (Top). Unfortunately, neither Todd nor James was chosen to advance to the district competition. However, both of them were honored to have been nominated. Lee Black and James Burgess (Bottom) were chosen to attend North Carolina Boys’ State at Wake Forest University in Winston- Salem. During a week spent at Wake Forest University, they, along with representatives from other North Carolina high schools, set up a mock government, held mock elections, and proposed and passed bills for the imaginary state. The administrative staff of Bandys was composed of three people: Mr. Ed Carter, principal: Mr. Bill Bost, assistant principal: and Mrs. Audrey Throneburg, secretary. The administrative and dis- ciplinary problems of our school were handled legally and fairly by these people. With their help and cooperation, Bandys continued to be one of the finest schools around. 124 Opposite Page Top: Mrs. Throneburg tended to the secretarial duties of the school. Mrs. Karolyn Thor- ton and Mrs. Susan Carpenter were two ladies that you could turn to when you needed someone to talk to. They assisted students in solv- ing problems dealing with school, schedules, career plans, and per- sonal problems. The students along with the faculty members knew that if they had a problem they could go to the guidance office for help. In the guidance office either Mrs. Thorton or Mrs. Carpenter were willing to discuss any problem which the stu- dents or the faculty members had. It was great to know that these ladies were ready to guide and to assist you with your problems. 126 Opposite Page Top: Mrs. Thorton checked over several stu- dents' applications for college. The first half of the football game saw our fine Trojan team jump to a comfortable lead over Cherryville. The excitement built and everyone eagerly awaited what would happen next. The first half ended and the Homecoming festivities began. As each of the beautiful ladies was escorted onto the field, the crowd could hardly con- tain its curiousity—who would be Homecoming Queen? Then the crowd quietened as it was announced, “The 1979 Homecoming Queen is Miss Tammy Lutz.” Angie Thompson and Evie Kennedy were chosen as first and second runners-up. The halftime was ended by the tears of happiness and the sound of ap- plause. The second half saw the Ironmen of Cherryville attempt a comeback, but to no avail as the Trojans were victorious with an impressive 32-16 score. Homecoming night was completed with a very successful dance. The music was provided by “The Howell Brothers”, who seemed to have something for everyone’s taste. Disco Pat and his Mobile Disco Show provided the entertain ment. The dance proved to be very good for everyone as Disco Pat played different music to suit everyone's taste. This year, for the first time, the Christmas Dance was co-sponsored as the French Club accepted a little help from the FFA. All in all, the dance was great. The music, for the evening, was supplied by “Peace Mill”. Later that evening, Jorge Valencia and Telisia Sigmon were crowned King and Queen of the Sweetheart Dance. All who at- tended the dance enjoyed it and will carry the memories of the night forever. 136 Opposite Page Top: Jorge Valencia and Telisia Sigmon were crowned King and Queen of the Sweetheart Dance. It was the evening of the long-awaited Junior-Senior Prom. Much time was spent preparing for the event and much money was spent on clothing for the occasion, but the enchanting evening proved to be worth it all. Juniors and Seniors filed into the gymnasium in their formal at- tire approaching a romantic garden setting representing the theme of the prom, “Somewhere My Love”. “Clockwork”, due to their previous popularity, was invited for a return engagement at the prom. “Clockwork” played a variety of music; fast, slow, old, and new. Something was provided for everyone’s tastes. On this special occasion, the honor of King and Queen of the Prom was bestowed upon Robert Eades and Alice Lineberger. Everyone left the prom with many beautiful memories of an enchanting evening. 138 Opposite Page Top: Pete Lail and Karen Caccia showed style in this modern dance. But despite this fact, they still proudly did their best and had a fine showing. The team ended the season third in the SD-7 Con- ference with a (6-4) record. But this record does not tell the whole story. Three of these losses were within one toughdown. Many team members excelled in play. Along with the help of a great line, Darrell Smith managed to gain over a thousand yards this season. Even though some mem- bers were not honored, everyone contributed to the team. 146 Opposite Page Top Right: Robin Ferrell was tackled by some NewtonConover defensive players. Football Suffers From Lack of Experience This past year’s Junior Varsity Football Team suffered greatly from lack of experience. The team was very young, consisting of a ma- jority of freshmen. They ended the season with a (3-5) record. Some of the outstanding players were honored at the fall banquet. Terry Bowman received the Gary Butler Award, Phil Brown received the Best Offensive Player Award and Ronnie Dellinger received the Best Defensive Player Award. All in all, the year was not a total loss as it gave the players the ex- perience needed for future years of J.V. and Varsity play. 150 Opposite Page: Top: Terry Bowman broke into the defen- sive secondary. This confidence didn’t carry them. They placed second in the Conference Tourna- ment. Next, the varsity girls found new life. They took the District-7 Championship and were off to the State Tournament. During the State Tournament our girls met very physical and quick teams. They overcame Northampton but lost the two following games; nevertheless, the girls came home winners, taking fourth place in the State 2-A Tournament. 152 Opposite Page Top Left: Kim Gabriel shot over her oppo- nent’s reach. They were young, experi- enced and had a reputation for excellence. This fact made them a prime target in conference play; everyone wanted to defeat them. They withstood the pressure and finished second in the conference, losing only to two teams. Conference tournament action was also very decisive. We were defeated in the semi-finals, but our boys fought through to a District 7 Championship by defeating our arch rival Fred T. Foard. The “Cinderella Team” returned to the State Tournament to find competition waiting. Our Trojans were overcome in the second game by Louisburg and in the third by Sylva-Webster to take fourth place in State Competition. 154 Top Left: Mark Sigmon penetrated his op- ponents' defense in an effort to score. Girls Improved The junior varsity girls’ basket- ball team consisted of eight return- ing sophomores and five new freshmen. During the course of the year, these girls improved on their responsibilities as teammates and individuals. They learned the fun- damentals of basketball and ob- tained the experience necessary for future years of junior varsity and varsity competition. Coach Walker’s expectations of his team were met by the end of the season. 156 Opposite Page Top: Donna Jones shot from the outside. Bottom Left: Marsha Bumgarner drove in for a lay up on this play. Boys Had A Good Season This year’s Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball Team had a good season. As happens almost every year, the Junior Varsity team lost most of its players to the varsity team and consisted of mostly inex- perienced freshmen. But despite this fact, the team did very well and improved throughout the season. This year Mr. Randy Lowman coached the team and did a fine job of preparing them for varsity play in years to come. 158 Opposite Page Top: Marvin Daniels shot over this Fred T. Foard opponent. Un- der the guidance of a new wrestling coach, Mr. Tim Ballard, the team overcame a lot of tough opposition and ended the season with an 8-5 record. The team then went to the Indian Wrestling Classic where it placed sixth with 74' 2 points. The team did very well this year and looks forward to an even better season next year. 160 Opposite Page Bottom: Nathan Caldwell worked for the pin. The tennis team had a very competitive year, finishing with a 6-4 record. Everyone on the tennis team contributed greatly, but the most outstanding contribution was perhaps by Joey Good who was seeded number one for three years and was named All Conference this season. The team then tied for first in the conference tournament, where Janet Deal placed second in the singles, and Kim Gabriel and Tina Bumgarner placed second in the doubles. Next the girls moved on to the Sectional Tournament where they placed third. A double's team, Janet Deal and Robin Campbell, advanced to the state finals where they won their first match, but lost the next one. They ended up in the top eight doubles teams in the state. Since all but one of the girls will be returning, the chance of another conference championship is very good. This Page Top: Janet Deal and Robin Campbell ad- vanced to the state quarter finals. The team had only a few returning players and the rest consisted of sophomores and freshmen. Although the team was young and inexperienced it improved as the season went on. The season came to an end with approximately a .500 mark. Everyone contributed something to the team. The future of our softball team looks very good as we are losing only two players. 164 Opposite Page: Top Right: Amanda Burke caught an out- field fly. Baseball Team Young And Inexperienced This past year’s baseball team was very young and inexperienced, having only two seniors on the team. But despite this fact, they played very impressively, beating the top three teams in the con- ference and losing mostly by small margins, ending the season with a 6-9 record. The team received outstanding plays from many of its members. Alan Deal was chosen all- conference. The team has great expecta- tions for the future season as the returning players will be seasoned athletes. 166 Top Right: Alan Deal crossed home plate after hitting a home run. One outstanding con- tribution was by Brent Spencer, captain of this year’s team. Scott Kale, Johnny Greene, Rodney Cline, and Greg Gabriel were just a few outstanding individuals. Scott Kale was high scorer followed by Johnny Greene, who set a school record in pole vaulting. The team finished fourth in the conference meet at East Lincoln, where everyone on the team con- tributed to the event. 168 Opposite Page Top: John Greene broke another school record in the pole vaulting event. These girls worked industriously in order to learn their cheers. They spent many long hours practicing during the summer and after school; they even went to a cheerleading camp during the summer. All in all the varsity cheerleaders proved to be an essential part of the games. 170 Opposite Page Top: The Varsity Cheerleaders (left to right): Bottom: Co-Captain, Evie Kennedy; Tina Fletcher.
