Girls Prepared Themselves for Homes of Their Own Home Economics was a course that taught girls how to keep house. They learned to cook, sew, and do other kinds of housework. This was training not only for housewives but for any young woman who planned to make it on her own. Miss Beard did her best to get her students ready for life after school.

To Have Your Own Family You Must Learn Responsibility When students graduate from high school most of them plan to start a family some day. The Family Living Class gave you some guidelines on anything from planning your wedding, to filling out taxes, or budgeting your money, to decorating your home. These were only a few. It taught young men and women how to share their responsibilities and not put them in sterotyped roles. Many guys thought taking such a course was only for girls. But to raise a family it takes parents both father and mother. This made family living for everyone. Top Left: With this ring I thee wed ...” Left: The Family Living Class staged a “mock wedding . The bride was Missy Glover and the groom was Kevin Boggs. Tim Stinson played the role of the reverend. Bottom Left: Miss Beard instructed Philip Beard on how to fix scrambled eggs as the rest of the class observed. Below: Philip put his instructions into action and fixed the scrambled eggs. 25
