However, the business of school also plays a significant part in the life of a student. The 1978 Trojan Is Dedicated To Mr. Charles Samuel Harbinson This being our final year at Bandys we look back over our years in high school. As we’ve struggled to make it, we’ve needed lots of help from our teachers. All have been kind and did their best for us. One particular man has stood out in our minds as we have thought back. He came to Bandys young and ambitious. As he worked with us we learned to love and respect him. He got down on our level and became a part of us. He became our friend. He laughed with us and frowned with us. He was always willing to listen if you needed someone to talk to. He always tried to help you if you had a problem and treated you as an individual. He expected from everyone their best and he gave his in return. The senior class of ’78 is very proud to dedicate the 1978 Trojan to Mr. Charles Samuel Harbinson, “Harby”. 8 9 English Is An Important Part of Communication A good command of the English language is necessary today in order to communicate effectively. During the years a student spent at Bandys, the English department prepared him to meet this challenge. Through the study of vocabulary skills, grammar, the writing of compositions, and the study of authors and their works, the student obtained an understanding of how our language works. Hopefully, by the time he graduated, he was able to “get the message across.” This year English courses were on a semester basis, as they were last year. The one required course was taken during the fall semester, and an elec- tive, chosen by the student, was taken in the spring. This was both in- teresting and helpful, as the student could study an area of interest more in depth than he could with a general curriculum. A new club was started this year for English students. Sponsored by Miss Donna Guest, the Drama Club was for students who were interested in acting and in learning how plays are produced. They also produced and performed a play about the Christmas story for the children in Child Care. In addition, they planned to go see other plays performed and to possibly perform another play in the spring. 12 Opposite Page Top: Several students performed a puppet show about the courtship of the Puritans. From both French I and French II courses, students were taught by Mrs. Kaye McConnell to speak, read, and write the French language. They also got the opportunity of learning about France, the coun- try. They learned of the people and their culture, how they com- pared with Americans. French is more than a language. It’s a way of life, as everyone who took the courses found out. Top Right: Mrs. McConnell gave individual attention to students with ques- tions. Middle: With the help of head phones and a cassette recorder students learned to pronounce French dialogue. 14 Left: David Broome worked hard at completing a work sheet on French verbs. Gail Nolley was elected French Club Maid of Honor. 15 The Business Field Is One Of Opportunity The business department offered many courses for students who wished to prepare themselves for careers in business. These courses included typing, shorthand, business law, business management, data processing, and accounting. Typing was a popular course because of its usefulness during college and after school. Shorthand provides training for future secretaries; business law and business management taught students things they would need to know if they ever opened their own businesses, while date processing and accounting gave preliminary training for jobs in these fields. The Future Secretaries Association, gave its students a chance to gain a greater knowledge of how the business com- munity operated. They invited several speakers to talk to them about various subjects of interest. They also held their an- nual Womanless Beauty Pageant last spring. In this unusual event, boys dressed as women were the contestants and their escorts were girls dressed as men. The contest was great fun and as were all FSA activities, enjoyed by all who par- ticipated. Top Left: The accounting class worked on their assignment Top Right: Sharon Slaughter practiced her typing skills. Bottom Left: Mrs. Miller helped students with problems in the typing exercise. Top Right: Jeff Drum worked on an assignment in Pre-Algebra during his spare time. Below Left: Tammy Bumgarner completed an algebra test. Below Right: Mrs. Foster showed Rick Price how to solve a difficult problem. 18 Offered in Math A good foundation in mathematics is necessary whether one plans to go to college or start working after graduation. The Math Department at Bandys strove to prepare the student to meet this challenge through a variety of courses. These courses ranged from general and consumer math to advanced math, which included trigonometry and preliminary calculus. There were several paths to choose from when starting out as a freshman. The student could choose from general math, consumer math, or Pre-Algebra, or decide to plunge directly into Algebra I. Depending on his decided course of study, he could then advance to higher courses, such as Algebra II, geometry, and advanced math, in successive years. It was up to the student to decide which courses to take. Whichever road the student decided on, he could depend on ready and willing teachers to help him understand the ways of mathematics. Top Left and Middle: After Lynn McClain wrote a problem on the board, Mrs. Teague ex- plained it to the class. Above: Signora Little and Cathy Pike worked on their geometry projects during class time. At Left: Randy Wimberly and Philip Beard worked together in trig class. 19 Science Was A Subject That Yielded Discovery The Science Dept, includes several varied fields of study. The required course for all freshmen is physical science. It teaches the basics of science courses that will be taken in future years. Biology is taken in the sophomore year. The biology student studies life forms and their relationships with each other. If one wishes to further his scientific educa- tion, physics, chemistry, and Directed Independent Study For Medical Career Students, are offered. Physics consists of the study of nature’s laws and how forces act on matter. In chemistry, the student learns about the different elements and the ways in which they react. Directed Indepen- dent Study for Medical Career Students is an advanced biology and anatomy course. One of our most recent courses in science is the photography class. In here students got the opportunity to follow the picture from the snapping of the shutter to the finished product. They got a chance to take their own pictures and develop them. To put it plainly the science student graduating from Bandys has a good understanding of the world around him. Top Right: John Caldwell demonstrated how to do this activity. Bottom Left: Mr. Hilderbran explained the elasticity constant of a spring. Bottom Right: Aldric Fishe and Rosalin Gibson tried their hand at burning bones in physical science class. 20 Top Left Right: Sabra Moore, Patsy Drum and Danny Little dissected some fish in Biology. Bottom Left: Tim Ballard and Tommy Glenn worked on a chemistry experi- ment. Bottom Right: Wondering if they had succeeded, Gary Klinger and Junior Catoe examined their solution. The Science Participated In The Science Club was a very active one. Under the leadership of John Caldwell and Everett Caldwell, the members got a chance to go out and actually experience many of the dif- ferent branches of science. They’ve gone on many interesting field trips to such places as the North Carolina Zoological Park and to the Science Fair at Clemson University. Club Many Activities Also they spent a weekend at Camp Broadstone in the Appalachian Mountains. There they learned to survive in the wild. But then they also got a chance to learn more about science right here at home. At the meetings were speak- ers from colleges who provided pre- sentations for our meetings. The Science Club proved that learning can be fun. Opposite Page Top Left: David Broome and Alice Lineberger took a ride on a hydraulic see saw. In our classes one could journey back to Medieval times of knights and gladiators, or one could choose on which side he would have fought in the Civil War. The student had an opportunity to meet many ex- citing men and women who have made the world in which we live today. History also meant keeping up to date with the events of today. Students were taught what was happening in politics and national affairs. History gave an outlook as well as an insight to the world around us. Above Right: Darrell Radcliff worked on a history assignment. Below Right: Mr. Scott tried to get a point across to one of his classes. Below: These students had different reactions to what their teacher had to say. Right: Mr. Kilby discussed a chapter with one of his classes. 24 To Have Your Own Family You Must Learn Responsibility When students graduate from high school most of them plan to start a family some day. The Family Living Class gave you some guidelines on anything from planning your wedding, to filling out taxes, or budgeting your money, to decorating your home. These were only a few. It taught young men and women how to share their responsibilities and not put them in sterotyped roles. Many guys thought taking such a course was only for girls. But to raise a family it takes parents both father and mother. This made family living for everyone. Top Left: With this ring I thee wed ...” Left: The Family Living Class staged a “mock wedding . The bride was Missy Glover and the groom was Kevin Boggs. Tim Stinson played the role of the reverend. Bottom Left: Miss Beard instructed Philip Beard on how to fix scrambled eggs as the rest of the class observed. Here students got the opportunity to work with children as they learned about their habits and behavior. They learned to care for them and to discipline them. They taught and loved each one. It was a good experience for everyone who took the course. The center also benefits the children. It prepared them for kin- dergarten and elementary school. It gave them a chance to learn to get along with others not only their own age but adults as well. It was an enjoyable experience for all students and children. Yet ag is not just farming. Under the guidance of Mr. R. C. Hampton, his students develop qualities of leadership and increase their competitive spirits. Through various agriculture- related activities and contests, the members of the Bandys chapter of the Future Farmers of America learn while having fun. This organization won several local and federation honors and awards. Last spring they took first place honors in nine out of ten contests in the Catawba Federa- tion. This school year they received first and second place honors for their booths at the Catawba County Fair. They were awarded first place in the Catawba Federation tool judging con- test. In addition. Federal awards were given to them for proficiency in agricultural electrification and agricultural processing. Although the Bandys chapter of the FFA is proud of these achievements, they look forward to further improvement in future years. 30 Opposite Page Top: FT A Officers: John Pope. Taught by Mr. Edsel Lineberger, a new teacher this year at Bandys, the students learned how to make repairs on cars and how to keep them running in top shape. In addition to doing bookwork, the students were given the chance to gain ex- perience working on cars and engines. Auto mechanics gave students valuable training in automotive repair and prepared them for a future career in this field. Members of this class also had the privilege of joining the Auto Mechanics Club, one of the newer clubs at Bandys. Top Right: DeNeil Caldwell used the grinder to smooth the edge on a piece of metal. Middle Left: Mr. Lineberger turned the crankshaft to show his students how the valves operate. Middle Right: Joel Farrer and Wayne McCombs worked on a partially tom-down engine. At Right: Danny Chandler examined part of a distributor. 32 Construction Skills Were Gained Through Experience In the carpentry and construction industry classes, future carpenters and brick masons were taught the fundamentals. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Astor Propst, the student learned the how-to’s of carpentry, woodworking, and brick laying. Using various kinds of carpentry equip- ment, they built useful items. The construction skills they learned could be useful whether they preferred to become involved in the trade or become handymen. In addition to their class activities, many of these students chose to join the Carpentry Club. At Left: Darrell Caldwell and Brian Poole made sure this corner was perfectly square. Below Left: Steve Isenhour prepared the mor- tar for the laying of a row of brick. Below Right: Davey Bumgarner cut a piece of wood with the band saw. 33 Vocational Skills Were Stressed In Pre-Vocation Pre-vocation focused on the educational and vocational training needs of special students. Mr. Randy Faucette taught these students basic math and English, while stressing vocational skills. Members of this class helped around the school by sweeping the gym floor and by help- ing keep the lunchroom clean. Upon graduation, they could look forward to an interesting future on the job. Top: During a free period. Marcus Byers. Donald Flowers, and Carl Conner played checkers. Bottom: Mr. Faucette helped Bonnie Bullabough recognize pictures of international traffic signs. 34 Learning How to Make a Living Distributive Education and In- dustrial Cooperative Training were two separate courses with the same general idea in mind: to prepare stu- dents for employment after school through both bookwork and on the job training and experience. In its first year at Bandys, DE proved to be a success. Taught by Mr. Moore, DE concentrated on jobs in retail stores and supermarkets. On the other hand, Mr. Mark Honeycutt’s ICT course dealt with employment in manufacturing plants. Students in both DE and ICT at- tended school for the first three periods each day, and then went to their jobs. These courses provided ex- cellent experience for students who planned to start to work full time af- ter graduation. Top: These ICT students talked during a break in classwork. Physical Fitness For Each Health Physical Fitness should be a concern of everyone. In our Health and P. E. classes each student became aware of what exercising could do for them as in- dividuals. Physical education activities resulted in the development of power and endurance of the heart and lungs. Also it developed muscle tone and co- ordination. 38 Was A Goal And P.E. Student These are the bases for good health. One aspect of physical education of which most people aren’t aware is its ability to strengthen your thinking and reasoning. All these things added up to a healthy and physically fit individual. While at the same time it was a lot of fun. Creativity Brought Pride In Art Class students had an op- portunity to express themselves in their art projects. Through each piece of their work they showed a little bit of their personality and moods. With the aid of Mrs. Radar, the students tried their hand at drawings, tapestry, char- coal sketches, paper mache, and many other creative arts and crafts. Each had good reason to be proud of their work. First Row: Eddie Ford, Jill Yancey, Teresa Smith, Tina Yancey, Barbara Jacobs, Lisa Eades, Terri Madron, Shandran Jones. The forty member chorus traveled to several local churches during the year. They also sang for the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. Because of each member’s enthusiasm, the year was enjoyed by all. Top Right: The chorus practiced hard at school during fifth period to prepare themselves for their concerts. Middle Left: The chorus performed a Christmas Cantata for a group of senior citizens at Camp Dogwood. He said that they worked hard and learned quick. With their enthusiasm and the other student’s experience they both worked together to produce one of our finest bands, and Mr. Harbinson was very proud of each member. A new addition to our music program was the guitar class. The course wasn’t very expensive. Every- day people were interested in it and you could learn enough in one year to enjoy your own music. All who took the course thought it was a lot of fun. 42 Opposite Page Top Right: The Trojan Marching Band made football fans proud when they performed at half-time during each game. It was called the media center. In our media center you could find many old and new books, anything from fiction to fact. Also you could find many reference books, magazines, newspapers, filmstrips, and other visual aides that came in handy when history reports and English term papers were due. Mrs. Kiser, our librarian, and Mrs. Nolley, her assistant, were always willing to help students find the informa- tion needed for their particular studies. To be able to join and to remain a member, a student had to keep an 85 or above grade average and not miss over two consecutive meetings. There were several projects undertaken by the SAE. These included cleaning the gym after home basketball games and changing the letters on the activities sign in front of the school. Before Christmas, the club gave each of the teachers a small gift and provided free refreshments for the faculty in the lounge. They also sang Christmas carols to the children in child care and gave them each a stocking full of candy. The SAE was always glad to lend a helping hand. The staff used photographs, type specifications, and other modern techniques to make the Ban-Troia special. Instead of printing it themselves, they sent it off to a printing company. When the paper came back, it looked like a real newspaper. In spite of the change in price, the student body liked the new edition a lot better. 49 Producing the Annual Meant a Lot of Hard Work Producing an annual is a year-round job. It starts in January as soon as the last page of the old annual is mailed and doesn’t stop until the finished products are given to the student body. This process, from start to finish, is not as easy or sim- ple as one might think. The annual should include all major school activities such as sports events and dances, as well as all of the subjects and students at Bandys. Everything must be photographed, then the pages laid out and the copy written. Every work must be typed, then proofread and corrected until it is perfect. To make matters worse, this all must be done to meet deadlines in order for the an- nuals to be finished on time. HONORS AND AWARDS Honors, Awards, and Scholarships Were Given to Deserving Students Awards Day took place on June 3, 1977. It honored those students who were top achievers in their perspective fields. Awards were given to the students who were most out- standing in academics and athletics. Also honored were the bus drivers and those students who had managed to attend one or more years of school without any absences. These young people all had special qualities and talents which enabled them to excel in their chosen areas. Below: Junior Catoe received the American History Award from Mr. Kilby. The students chosen from each high school are inter- viewed. Then through a process of elimination and successive inter- views, the top students are picked for scholarships. This year the two nominees from Bandys were Marshall Sigmon and Rick Abernethy. Neither Marshall nor Rick were picked to ad- vance to a higher level of competition, but both of them were proud to have been nominated. This year, Billy Loadholdt and Marshall Sigmon were chosen to at- tend Boys’ State. During the few days they spent in Raleigh they, along with representatives from other North Carolina schools, set up a mock government. They held elections with themselves and their fellow represen- tatives running for government of- fices. In addition to this, they also set up a fictional news network. After the elections were completed, and the news network was established, the participants got the chance to see if they could make it all work. With everyone taking part in some way or another, it was lots of fun for the par- ticipants. Top: Morehead Nominees: Marshall Sigmon, Rick Abernethy. Winning Speakers and A Hardworking Page Once every spring, the Inter- national Optimist Oratorical Contest is held. Bandys holds a school con- test, with the winners from the boys’ division and the girls’ division ad- vancing to the zone contest. Last year’s winners from Bandys were Cathy Pike and John Pope. Then- speeches were on the theme: “Together We Will . . . ”. John won the zone competition and advanced to the regional contest, where he was defeated by strong competition. Tammy Lutz was selected last spring by Representative J. Reed Poovey to serve in the North Carolina House of Representatives as a page. Appointed by House Speaker Carl J. Stewart, Tammy ran errands for Representative Poovey and for other representatives. During the week she spent in Raleigh, she became better acquainted with the operation of state government. It was a rewarding and enjoyable way to spend a week. 57 JUNIOR MARSHALS The Junior Marshals consist of the ten highest academically ranked students in the Junior Class. They participated in baccalaureate and graduation exercises by passing out programs and acting as ushers. Jeff Miller passed out yellow roses to all the senior girls after they received their diplomas. Chief Marshal Rick Abernethy and Kathy Cline escorted in the graduating senior class. TOP TEN SENIORS Out of the graduating class of 1977 the top ten highest academi- cally ranked students were given the title “Top Ten Seniors.” Throughout the school year, these students strived to maintain their academic standards. Their final averages ranged from 97 to 93. In addition to their good grades, they displayed qualities of leadership and athletic ability. It is because of this that we honor these students. 59 The End Is Only The Beginning Bandys High School Graduation marked the end of a life as a high school student, while at the same time launched the beginning of a life out in a world full of adventure and opportunity. Here students get recognition of their past accomp- lishments and are left to go their separate ways. The Class of ’77 has gone through the trials of growing up together but then the day came when the security of the unit gave way to each individual’s hopes, dreams, and wishes, as they approach new horizons. Many young people were getting ready for their first prom, and others anxiously awaited the return of the magic of prom night. Girls bought new dresses and guys rented tux- edos of rainbow colors. The night was indeed magical and romantic as couples swayed to the slow num- bers. But there was also a chance for everyone to “get down” to the sound of Quest. Later that night Marshall Sig- mon crowned Stephanie Caldwell queen of the prom and Doug How- ard king of the prom. As midnight approached all the fun and excite- ment turned to memories that would stay with everyone the rest of their lives. Quest provided the music for the prom. This four-piece band from Winston-Salem, North Carolina was criticized for being too small and for not playing enough popular songs. However, the band was clean-cut and more suitable for an event such as a prom than the pre- vious year’s band. Here at Bandys we brought in the season with our annual Christmas Dance spon- sored by the French Club. The enter- tainment was provided by “Yukon Jack” which seemed to please most everyone there. During the evening Miss Donna Cox was crowned our 1977 Christmas Queen. The entire evening was enjoyable and gave everyone the mood or spirit of Christ- mas. 68 Opposite Page Top: Miss Donna Cox was crowned 1977 Christmas Queen. Dur- ing halftime, when our team was well on its way to victory, Donna Keever was crowned Homecoming Queen. Lisa Carroll and Donna Cox were chosen first and second runners-up, respectively. The music for the Homecoming Dance was furnished by the Disco Kid, from Denver. Opinion was divided as to the quality of the mu- sic played. Some enjoyed the dance, while others said it could have been better. All things considered, everyone had a great time. Disc jockey Sandy Beech played the lat- est hits for everyone to dance to. Everyone present thoroughly en- joyed the music and dancing, along with Sandy’s witty commentary. The disco was also a success money-wise. Over $500 was raised to help pay for this annual. We can all look forward to next year’s disco with happy anticipation. All members must main- tain an 85 or above average. This year, as usual, the Key Club spon- sored the Homecoming dance and was in charge of the Homecoming festivities. The Monogram Club consisted of student athletes who had earned a letter jacket. This year, as in the past, new members had to go through in- itiation. However, this year their in- itiation was more digestable. Prospective male members were re- quired to dress as women while the girls had to dress as babies. The Monogram Club helped to raise money for the construction of the new field house. One of the ways they did this was by holding a raffle, which was a success. The spirited Pep Club cheered at pep rallies and ball games. Their pep and encouragement inspired our athletes onward. After three disap- pointing non-conference losses, the Trojans rebounded in conference play, winning all but one of six con- ference games. Their powerful defense, which shut-out four of their opponents, as well as their productive offense, enabled them to advance to the playoffs. There they were defeated in a close game by the strong Swain County team. Many team members excelled in play. The defense was led by Bradley Wesson, Roy Sigmon, and Marshall Sigmon, among others. The leaders of the offense included Chris Campbell and Darrell Smith. Roy Sigmon, Jimmy Locklin, Marshall Sigmon, and Darrell Smith made all con- ference. Even though some members were not honored, everyone con- tributed to the team’s success. 80 Opposite Page Top: Chris Campbell sprinted ahead for yardage. However, most Trojan fans agreed that a repeat of last year’s accomplishments would be just as good. By using their superior inside strength and quickness, the Lady Trojans dominated early competi- tion. They started out with eight straight victories. Most of them were lopsided scores. The last part of December the Trojans were invited to participate in a Christmas Tourna- ment, which included the top teams in the state. The Lady Trojans won their first game but lost the next two to strong competition. With over half the season left, there is little doubt as to where the team will stand at the end of the year. With some good solid basketball and a little bit of bench, there’s a strong possibility of another state championship. With the loss of James McCleave’s scoring punch, Coach Bill Bost knew he would have to come up with another winning combination to keep up the fine basketball tradition here at Bandys. At first, the future looked bright for the team as they took a few early season games. But after a mid-season slump, the record stood at 5-9. The team at times showed signs of ex- cellence, but still lacked consistency. This inconsistency was due to the fact that the starting five included one freshman, three juniors, and one senior. As they gained experience and confidence during play, it was the hope of all the Trojan fans that next year’s team will restore the great tradition here at Bandys. Girls’ Softball Team Showed Improvement s After winning only four games last year, our 1977 girls’ softball team improved. The girls pulled together with a real team spirit to win better than half their games last season. Coaches Marilyn Clark and Richard Brown were impress- ed with the determination shown by each player. Outstanding perform- ers for the team were Sylvia Mun- dy, Kim Fox, Amanda Burke, Lisa Setzer, and Lisa Carroll, who was voted most valuable player. Above: Showing her own technique. They struggled through a season filled with tri- umphs and disappointments. The team experienced a winning streak during the first half of the season. But at mid-season they hit a mild slump. Through perseverance they pulled out of the rut and headed into the second half of the season well on the road to improvement. This was shown by the fact that they missed going to the conference playoffs by only one game. Two of the team members, Alan Deal and Doug Howard, were selected for the all conference team. Alan was chosen for his superb hitting ability, and Doug was picked because of the talent he exhibited at third base. Mike Burke put the tag on a Lincolnton runner. Individual Efforts Highlight Track Season The track season was high- lighted by many outstanding in- dividual performances. Alton Rudi- sill and Tyronne Kennedy set new school records. Alton broke the school record in pole vaulting with a vault of ten feet, and Tyronne set new records in the long jump and the low hurdles. The team was led in scoring by Tyronne. He was followed by Stan- ley Connor and Chris Campbell. Tyronne, Stanley, and Chris were joined by Delton Smith to form another record setting 880 relay team. The relatively young team gained valuable experience and the return- ing members are looking forward to a bright future. THE TRACK TEAM (Left to Right) Front Row: Rusty Griffin, Brent Spencer. In the team’s third year, their record stood at 3-9 at mid-season. It was a little disap- pointing after last year’s successful season. Most of this was due to the fact that the Trojans lost several key members from last year’s squad. Still the Trojans gave most teams a good, hard match. There were many individuals who stood out this year, but two in par- ticular were Bradley Wesson, Co- Captain; and Delton Smith. Bradley won the Most Valuable Flayer Award in the first Catawba County Wrestl- ing Tournament. Delton led the Tro- jans throughout the year with his out- standing performances. Although the Trojans suffered a let- down this year, it was a good year for the team. As the Trojans gained ex- perience, it looked as if they would become a contender in the future. The season was not very suc- cessful with a conference record of 3-7. However, Bandys was given the title of “Best Sports” for the 1977 spring season. Dean Helton was named most valuable player and all conference. The team was coached by Mrs. Mickie Foster. Coached by Mr. L.A. Walker for the first time, the girls’ tennis team had a fun season. Although not re- flected by their record of 3-4, Mr. Walker felt the team had a successful season because they put forth their best effort. Due to the fact that it was only the second year of fall girls’ ten- nis at Bandys, the team started off inexperienced. However, by the end of the season, it was felt that they were doing as well as any other team in the conference. Out of eight play- ers, seven were seniors. They were the pretty girls with the ability to keep us cheering when our team was behind and led us in victory cries when we defeated our opponents. Just as the players practiced to prepare themselves for a game, so did the cheerleaders. They spent long hours preparing new cheers and routines for each game. Thank you girls for a job well done. Below Left: Daphne Baker showed enthusiasm at one of the football games as she led the fans in a cheer. At each J.V. football and basket- ball game the J.V. cheerleaders were there to lead the fans in encouraging and cheering on their team. Each one practiced long hours to perfect their routines. They were filled with school spirit and represented their team well. 95 Trojan J.V.’s Had Outstanding Year The Bandys High School Junior Varsity football team had an ex- cellent year. Not losing a single conference game, they compiled a 7-2 record. The only losses came at the hands of Newton-Conover and South Iredell. The team was led by quarter- back Eric Houser, and running backs Mark Shubert, Robin Ferrell, and Shannon Woodlief. Most of their success, however, was due to the fact that they had a great line to lead the way. The standout linemen were Andy Set- zer and Jack Painter. Although the Trojan Junior Varsity had a successful season, their main objective was to ready themselves for varsity competi- tion. Prospects for the future looked very bright. 96 The Junior Varsity Football Team (Left to Right) First Row: Coach Bob Kilby, Jeff Dellinger, Tim Smith, Bruce Schronce, Joe Catchings, Gary Jones, Eric Houser, Robbie Flowers, Mark Shubert, Shannon Woodlief. With hustle, quickness and an 8-2 record, they showed that they were a great improvement over last year’s team. They also showed a lot of spirit during all of their games. With over half the season remaining, the Junior Varsity Girls’ are in the run- ning for a conference championship. With this young team coming up to varsity in a few years, the future looks to be one of continued success for the varsity team. The Boys’ team, however, was a different story. This was the first year as a coach for Mike Matheson, who teaches at Tuttle Middle School. He knew he had his work cut out for him. The Trojans struggled through their early play. At times they showed signs of greatness but their inexperience showed through during most of their games. Mark Shubert led the Trojans as he showed consistent play throughout the year. The main purpose of the junior varsity program is to ready the players for var- sity competition. As the team gained experience through play, most people felt they would soon be ready for the varsity. 98 Opposite Page Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team (Left to Right) First Row: Sylvia Clark, Ronda Little. Our principal, Mr. Ed Carter, says he loves his work. He enjoyed working at Bandys with the faculty members and students. He thinks we have one of the best schools in the county. The assistant principal is Mr. Bill Bost. He’s a busy man and he too loves his work. His jobs are numerous and he says he enjoys working with “the kids” as he calls us. Mrs. Audrey Throneburg is our secretary. Her work was difficult but she enjoyed working with high school students. She identified with young people of high school age. Top Right: Mr. Carter took a break from his work to pose for our cameras. Middle Right: Mr. Bost answered Donna Cox’s and Alice l.ineberger’s questions. Left: Mrs. Throneburg was busy filling out some important papers. 102 Top Right: Donna Cox and Alice Lineberger talked with Mrs. Throneburg. Middle Left: Mr. Bost made announcements over the speaker system each morning. Middle Right: Mr. Carter enjoyed smoking his pipe while working. Bottom: Dale Josey discussed a problem with the principal. 103 Our Teachers’ Helpers The teachers at Bandys were very busy people. They were fortunate to have teachers' aides. Teachers’ aides not only benefited the teachers but the students as well. Pictured Top Right is Mrs. Moss and Middle Right is Mrs. Robinson. These ladies were sometimes called Study Hall teachers because they kept the study halls all day. They also assisted teachers in grading papers, typing, etc. This helped out a lot at report card time. At Bottom Right is Miss Gabriel. She assisted Mrs. Witherspoon. She tutored students who needed help with their reading. She was able to give a little extra individual help so these students wouldn’t fall behind the rest of the class. Below is Mrs. Austin. She is a teacher’s aide in the Child Care Cen- ter. She worked with the children during the day and also helped the students as they worked and prepared things for the children. 104 When You Needed Assistance . . . . . . the guidance office was the right place to go. There you would have found Mrs. Karolyn Thornton, educational counselor, and Mrs. Susan Carpenter, vocational counselor. They were always ready to help students with their problems whether they were personal or had to do with school and or jobs after high school. This was Mrs. Carpenter’s first year at Bandys. She said that she just loved it. Everyone made her feel at home. It was a reward to her that the students wanted and need her help. This was very important to her. Although Mrs. Thornton has been with us for several years she said, “My work gets more interesting each year. The students and staff at Bandys are so co-operative and helpful that it’s a joy to work here.” Things have been added this year. The student handbook gives each student information that he she can refer to all year and the activity period especially helped those students who can’t come back for night meetings. The guidance counselors’ jobs are to help students. So if you ever need some advice or help in working out a problem, the guidance counselors are ready to help. Below: Students from the Hazel Berry School of Dance came to per- form for us here at Bandys. Left: Dalton Smith listened as Mrs. Carpenter answered some questions for him. Bottom Left: Mrs. Thornton ex- plained a letter to Elizabeth Brown. Above: Reinaldo Garcia, a foreign ex- change student from Brazil, came to play his guitar for the juniors and all music students. He was a student at St. Stephens High School. 105 A Break For Lunch Our lunchroom workers were a big part of everyone’s day. They started early each morning to prepare a well balanced meal for lunchtime. It took a lot of food to feed 600-plus people, so the food was prepared in large quantities, as shown in the top pic- ture at the right. When lunchtime came your food was served to you with a smile. Then after paying for your meal, you sat with friends and enjoyed the break between classes. This is shown in the middle and bottom pictures at the right. After the students had gone back to class, the lunchroom workers spent their afternoon cleaning up the lunchroom. They made everything spic-n-span so they would be ready for another day the next morning. The Lunchroom Staff (Left to Right) First Row: Mrs. Lois Connor, Mrs. Pat Steele. Mrs. White worked in the lunchroom for seven years and then has helped Mr. White for an additional seven years. In all these years they have kept our halls and rooms neat and clean. This was their last year work- ing at our school. We appreciate everything they’ve done for us and will miss them when they’re gone. Driver’s Education Bandys is fortunate to have a Driver’s Education class for stu- dents who are preparing to get their driver’s licenses. Under the instruction of Mr. Gene Fisher stu- dents get their book work concern- ing traffic laws and safety. With the help of coaches Foster, Fau- cette, and Crawford, he also gives students a chance for some on the road training. Students complete the class with the knowledge and experience to make good safe driv- ers. At Top: Robin Ferrell took a driving lesson in our new Trans-Am. Above I oft: Students practiced driving in our new Nova. Above: Mr. Gene Fisher taught students the safe way to drive. At Left: Freshmen studied the traffic laws. 108 Bus Drivers We should all be thankful for our bus drivers. Each one has gone through special training in order to drive a school bus. They have a lot of responsibilities. Their main concern is the safety of each passenger from the time they get on the bus till they get to school in the morning, and the same for returning home in the after- noons. It takes a lot of skill, time, and patience. We should be grateful for the job each one has done. Freshmen Freshmen Freshmen Freshmen Freshmen 149 You may never see tomorrow; there’s no written guarantee, And things that happened yesterday belong to history. You cannot predict the future, and you cannot change the past. You have just the present moment; you must treat it as your last. You must use this moment wisely for it soon will pass away. And be lost to you forever as a part of yesterday. You must exercise compassion, help the fallen to their feet, Be a friend unto the friendless, make an empty life complete. You must make this moment precious for it will not come again, And you can never be content with things that might have been. In Loving Memory of Nicholas Cornell Mundy 150 Kind words you fail to say this day may ever be unsaid. For you know not how short may be the path that lies ahead. The unkind things you do today may never be undone, And friendships that you fail to win may nevermore be won. You may not have another chance on bended knee to pray, And thank your God with humble heart forgiving you this day. You may never see tomorrow, but this moment is your own. It ’8 yours to use or cast aside; the choice is yours, alone. You have just this precious moment in the sunlight of today, Where the dawning of tomorrow meets the dusk of yesterday. Paraphased Paul F. Barnett In Loving Memory of Michael Edward Isenhour 151 The life of a student has many facets, each of them characteristic of the individual. They range from the enjoyment of leisure time activities to the concentration of in-depth studying, and from fellowship in the company of friends to quiet contemplation in solitude. The sum of these parts constitutes the whole of the life of each one of us — the life of a student. BALLS CREEK OPTIMIST CLUB FRENCH CLUB OFFICERS President Vice-President . .
