Our peers greeted us and informed us on the techniques of our soon-to-be teachers. One particular teacher had earned the reputation of being strict, humorless, and impersonal, but dedicated to the pro- fession of teaching. Throughout the following years we found this not to be true. We as individuals changed, and she, as a teacher changed with us. She became a person who always greeted students with a warm hello, and a sincere smile. Through class experiences and im- proved student-teacher relations, she has gained more respect from students than any other faculty member has possessed. She has contributed much of her time and many hours of volunteer work towards the im- provement of our school. Her duties are numerous and never ending. We bestow this honor to this teacher because of the interest she has displayed in us as individuals. She has won a place in our hearts for she has learned that students are not always enemies, but that we like to be called — friends. The Senior Class of 1977 dedicates OUR TROJAN to Mrs. Kaye McConnell. 10 Dedication Dedication 11 me A Victorious Homecoming The night of October 22, 1976, was cold and windy. But this did not dampen the spirits of the Trojan fans or its football team. For the night was unique; it was Home- coming. Anxiety and anticipation were evident on each individual's face. The first half saw our Trojans jump out to a 13-6 lead with the essence of victory in the air. But everyone knew the second half was left to be played and Gamewell had a fine team. The half ended and the Homecoming proceeding began. The band got into position for the time had come. “The 1976 Bandys Homecoming Queen is Miss Jo Eddie Mc- Combs. The bubble had burst and an outbreak of ap- plause, laughter, and cheering filled the stadium. The excitement of the crowd slowly diminished, but other yells returned as the Trojan team came out on the field more determined and fired-up than ever. But even with this, they fell behind 18-13 with time running out in the final period. Would the night of uniqueness end with the disappointment of defeat? No, the Trojan team sus- tained a drive that covered 89 yards, scored in the final two minutes, and gave the Trojans a 19-18 victory. As if in a fairy tale, the enchantment of the evening continued with Earthchild displaying a fine perfor- mance. A Sponsored Court; left to right. Shannon Spencer and Sean Wilkinson, began their walk onto the field to crown the Home- coming Queen. Homecoming 15 A Coach Foster enjoyed this victory dance with Donna Baker. B These two couples shared a quiet moment during this slow dance. C Everyone got down to the music of Earthchild. f C 16 Homecoming D The vastly improved Earth- child added to the victorious atmosphere. E Billy Loadholdt and Susan Bryson showed what a slow dance was made for. F Lori Laney and Donna Catoe bumped to the rhythm of this fast song. Homecoming 17 Everyone Enjoyed the First Disco Christmas Dance Cold and wet students entered the gym on December 4, 1976 for the Christmas Dance. The coldness soon faded, however, as the atmosphere of the dance took effect. This annual event is sponsored each year by the French Club under the leadership of Mrs. Kaye McConnell. The club was responsible for the selling of tickets, the decorat- ing, and the providing of the music. By a majority vote, they decided to hire a disc-jockey instead of a band. Sandy Beach, a disc-jockey from Big WAYS, provided the music for the evening. About midway through the dance, refreshments were served and Cindy Gilleland, French Club president, pre- sented Mrs. McConnell her traditional gifts from the French Club. During this break, the court was introduced. The court consisted of one representative from each grade, nine through eleven; one from each of the senior home- rooms; and one elected by the French Club. The musicless interval was ended by Sharon Havner being crowned queen. The evening was made complete as the music proved to be superb and everyone seemed enthralled by the dance. 18 Christmas Dance A Christmas Queen Sharon Havner was crowned by disc- jockey Sandy Beach. Christmas Dance 19 Juniors And Seniors Enjoyed A Night At Monte Carlo On the night of April 30, 1976, eager juniors and seniors entered the gym. As they entered the lobby, they feasted their eyes on slot machines, dice, and dancing girls. In the gym, beautiful scenery set a lovely mood for the only formal event of the year. Upon the arrival of Taurus the mood immedi- ately changed to wild. Dressed in incredible costumes, Taurus not only proved to be a good band but also a fine group of entertainers. Unlike other bands that we have had, Taurus took only one break during the evening. During this time the sophomore entertainment performed, the King and Queen were crowned, and refreshments were served. After being refreshed, Taurus came back to pro- vide music for the rest of the evening. A good time was enjoyed by all. A Mark Kale and Trena Laney danced to a slower mood. B Ronnie Deal and Julie Gabriel were crowned King and Queen of the Prom. C Enjoying a good fast song were Elaine Lewis and Stan- ley Connor. D Taurus not only provided the music for the Prom, they also provided atmosphere and entertainment through the use of their unusual cos- tumes. E David Watson and Aileen Weaver really got down with the music. Prom 21 The Games of Life Was A Success The theme of the Spring Festival was The Games of Life . This theme was carried out in such game shows as The Dating Game , The Newlywed Game , and The Divorce Game . The Beta Club, which sponsors this annual event, was joined by the Public Speaking Class to build a winning combination. The Queen of Hearts and her court reigned over the Spring Festival. The court included: Queen of Hearts, Beverly McGee; Maid of Honor, Betty Lutz; Miss Bandys, Susan Bryson; Senior Miss, Christy Jones; Junior Miss, Cheryl Raper; Sophomore Miss, Lisa Carroll; and Fresh- man Miss, Sandra Edwards. 22 Spring Festival A Stephanie Caldwell did her musical version of Send a Little Love My Way. B D The Fonz (Marshall Sig- mon) interviewed dates on The Dating Game . Kim Murray, Kerry Painter, and Sharon Havner were thrilled at the possibility of having the Fonz as a date. C Edith Ann (Donna Baker) stuck out her tongue as she ended her perfor- mance. E The Way We Were was sung by Cindy Gilleland. F Bobby Lutz crowned the queen, Beverly McGee, as Betty Lutz and Christy Jones looked on. Spring Festival 23 May 28 And June 4,1976 Were Important Days For Seniors On May 28, 1976, seniors were honored by march- ing into the gym in their caps and gowns during our annual Awards Day. Outstanding scholars and athletes were presented with awards for their achievements of the past year. June 4 was Graduation Day for the 1976 seniors. Pictured below are Bobby Lutz, first honor graduate, and David Isenhower, second honor graduate, both of whom spoke at graduation. Mr. Carter also gave words of encouragement before the diplomas were presented. As Class President Ronnie Deal called the roll, the seniors were presented their diplomas by Mr. Carter. The senior girls were given a yellow rose, the class flower, after they received their diplomas. Also helping in the ceremonies were the Junior Marshals who are pictured below. Inexperience, mental mistakes, and turn- overs cost the Trojans sev- eral key games. Starting with two close losses, the Trojans rebounded by win- ning four in a row. Then the Trojans found the going rough again by losing two in a row. The highlight of the season was a come from behind Homecoming vic- tory over Gamewell-Collets- ville. For the third straight year the Trojans lost the final game of the season, leaving a bitter taste which cannot be sweetened until next year. With many letter- men returning, Trojan foot- ball shines a bright light for the future. ▼ D A The hustle of the kick-off team was exemplified by Bruce Martin and Jeff Korn on this tackle. Varsity Football 33 Trojan Boys' Surprise Conference With Ability 34 Varsity Boys' Basketball With the loss of several starters from last year, it looked as if the task of Coach Bill Bost was to rebuild the team. Rebuild was the word, but was it necessary? To the sur- prise of many, the Bandys team started the season with a 79-55 victory over much improved Fred T. Foard. The Trojans were led by the SD-7 scoring leader, James Mc- Cleave. James started the season right as he netted 36, 23, 22, and 39 points in the first four games of the season. But he was not alone, as the Trojans consistently had three to four players in double figures. The Trojans took on a new look as they displayed an exciting attack consisting of a fast breaking offense and a pressure defense. Quickness, teamwork, and hustle served the Trojans well as they were 9-1 at mid-season, and in sole possession of second place. With the only loss coming to East Lincoln, the rematch may determine the conference title. A James McCleave, the SD-7 scoring leader, added two more against Foard. B Marshall Sigmon grabbed a rebound against Granite Falls. C Senior Dean Helton followed up a missed shot for two points. D George Reid's quickness paid off as he got a fast break lay- up. Varsity Boys' Basketball 37 Trojan Girls' Live Up To Pre-Season Expectations Our girls' team was picked to be one of the strongest in our conference. There was not much doubt left at mid- season as they held sole possession of first place and boasted a 10-0 record. The victories mounted as the Trojan attack consisted of excellent outside shooting and superior inside strength. Our frontline of Kim Fox, Janet Forney, and Marva Lynn Harper controlled the boards in almost every game. They intimidated opposing players and added an addition to the tight zone. Teamwork was evident, as four of the starting five averaged in double figures. The season began at Fred T. Foard and our girls beat them easily 69-46. This was a sample of things to come, as they demolished West Lincoln, Gamewell, and Newton- Conover. The other top contender in the conference, St. Stephens, gave them their closest game at 62-59. Winning two of the next four games by over 40 points, the second half of the season looked to be a warm-up for the con- ference and district tournaments. Varsity Girls' Basketball 41 Trojans Finish Second In Division Even though no championship was won by our Trojan team this year, much rebuilding took place. This year's team showed many new faces and the participation of many underclassmen. The team lacked experience in some places but made up for it in devotion and hustle. The loss of seven senior starters and four all-conference participants left many positions open. The rebuilding of our team was in the hands of Coach Faucette. This year, being his first as head baseball coach, he had his job cut out for him. But the Trojans compiled a winning record of 9-5 during the regular season and a final record of 9-6. The team was led by Lynn Bustle's pitching and the consistent hitting of Dennis Setzer. Lynn finished the season with a 6-3 record, two saves, and was voted all-con- ference for the third straight year. He finished his career at Bandys with a 21-7 record. Baseball 43 Softball Team Has Disappointing Season The girls' softball team had a disappointing season in which they accumulated a 4-10 record. Lack of experience and lack of effectiveness at the plate and on the field caused many errors. These errors cost them several games. The girls began their season with impressive wins over Gamewell (14-2) and Granite Falls (41-2), but won only two of their next eleven games. Shortstop Christy Jones got the honor of being the team's Most Valuable Player, with Amanda Burke being the Trojan all-conference representative. A A A Girls' softball team; left to right. E Signora Little rejected this pitch for a base hit. Softball 45 Track Team Boasts Underclassmen This year's track team showed enthusiasm and good representation in each event Even though they didn't capture a first place at any meet, they never placed last. This was perhaps due to the emphasis on good body conditioning. This year's team was led by sophomore Tyronne Kennedy, the leading scorer. He was followed by junior Stanley Connor and sophomore Chris Camp- bell. Tyronne, Stanley, Chris, and junior Jeff Howard placed third in the 880-relay at the conference meet and advanced to the regional meet at Charlotte. With an abundance of underclassmen participa- tion, the Trojan team gained experience and shows Bandys a prospective future. ▲ A ▼ B ► C 46 Track ► F A Track team; left to right. He also participated in the low hurdles, 880 relay team, and the broad jump. F Danny Setzer stood watching the path of the discus after his final attempt at Lincolnton. Track 47 Interest In Bandys First Year of Tennis Was A Smash Bandys, gradually increasing in extracurricular activites, offered tennis as another spring sport last year. Much interest was shown as the craze all over the state was tennis. Besides opening another field of physical activity for boys, it also offered a spring sport for girls. The announcement of a tennis team was a surprise to everyone. Due to uncertainty, much practice was needed by perspec- tive team members. Coach Horton was assisted by Coach Foster and much improvement was sought for all. But as the season pro- gressed the strokes became smoother and the wanting of improvement began to pay off. The trojan team's first match was against Gamewell. Bandys smashed the Blue Devils, their first year also, by an 8-1 score. The team, being late to begin, didn't get to be a part of the conference and have a set schedule. Matches were scheduled on the other schools' open dates. The opponents were tougher and more experienced than our young squad, but the Trojans gained knowledge of the game that could not have been taught in practice. At the end of the season and with tournament play beginning, the season appeared over. With the approval of the coaches in our conference, we were allowed to partici- pate in a tournament at UNC-Asheville. Mike Jakielski, Mark Mauney, and Dean Helton made the trip. The feel of tournament play and pressure was gained. Being allowed to enter the conference at the end of the season, Mike Jakielski and Mark Mauney were chosen all-conference. Mike and Mark possessed the best won-loss records of the team. With many players re- turning to next year's team, the outlook is much better and the improvement should be evident. 48 Tennis A Mark Mauney followed through on his backhand. Tennis 49 Wrestling Program Showed Improvement The Trojan Wrestling team proved to be one of the fastest developing teams in the SD-7. As a first year team, they had a disappointing record of 0-14. As a second year team, they boast a 5-5 mid-season record. As said by Coach William Crawford, I attribute the rapid develop- ment of the team to hard work and 'desire' by the whole team. Co-captains Bradley Wilson (7-2-1) and Delton Smith (6-2-1) led the team. Following them were Roy Sigmon (8-2) and Davey Bumgarner (7-2). The team was made up totally of underclassmen. Sophomores Keith Wesson (6-4) and Jerry Forney (6-2) accounted for their share of the victories, while Danny- Little (6-4) led the freshmen. With the gaining of experience showing already, future teams look to be definite contenders in the conference. 50 Wrestling IAI AC ▼ D T E A Kevin Laney rode his op- ponent at the beginning of his match. Wrestling 51 Cheerleaders Displayed Spirit and Enthusiasm A contributing factor to the success of any athletic team is the support that the fans give them. To make sure that the fans did their job, the cheerleaders had to do theirs. It was their responsibility to keep the crowd cheer- ing for the players, even when the team was behind. The cheerleaders were supposed to portray good sports- manship and thus be examples to the other spectators. This may sound like an easy job, but these girls will tell you that sometimes it was a very difficult one. One of the major problems that the cheerleaders were faced with was the new ruling about basketball games: all cheerleaders had to remain seated during the playing of the game. The only time they were allowed to cheer in front of the fans was during official time outs. New routines had to be developed but all the girls adjusted well to this change. It even helped get the fans more involved as the cheerleaders were cheering with them instead of for them. The cheerleaders at Bandys did their job well as they cheered for their teams at all the football and basketball games and were in many parades. Good sportsmanship and conduct were always exemplified by these fine repre- sentatives of our school. A A ▼ B 52 Cheerleaders A Cynthia Ratchford cheered loudly for the fighting Tro- jans. Cheerleaders 53 Junior Varsity Trojans Build A Strong Foundation For Varsity Competition The 1976 Trojan Junior Varsity football team recorded a 4-4-1 record overall. They compiled a 4-2-1 record in conference play which tied them for third place. After a slow start, the Trojans continued to improve throughout the season. The improvement was evident, but disappointing as the Trojans tied arch rival Maiden. The turning point in the season came with a 30-20 victory over Bunker Hill. The experience the team had gained was evident in the thrilling come from behind, 34-24 win, over Newton-Conover. The Junior Varsity accomplished much this year. They instituted the wishbone offense and ran a variety of new defenses. The team gained much needed experience in preparation for varsity competition. Several of the young athletes displayed promising skills that will be helpful to the Trojan football program next year. A Junior Varsity Football Team; left to right. In impressive victories over East Lincoln, Fred T. Foard, and Bunker Hill, they showed teamwork, hustle, and all- around talent. Alan Deal and Nick Mundy constantly carried the scor- ing burden. The whole squad showed intense defense, with the reserves having played key roles in several games. It was the hope of Coach Randy Faucette that his team could continue their superior play for the remainder of the season. I am satisfied with their improvement, they have im- proved a lot since the beginning of the season. This was said by Coach Robert Kilby about his Jayvee Girls' team. Due to their lack of experience and height, they have struggled to a 3-8 record at mid-season. Returning no starters, the team was well balanced, but lacked consistent scoring. The second half of the season sought continued improvement as additional experience was gained. A A 56 Jayvee Boys' Basketball A D ▼ F A Center Alan Deal went up for two points against Bunker Hill. It is harder to cheer when you do not have as many fans to support you. Enthusiasm was the name of the game and these girls really had plenty. Their main duty was to lead cheers at football and basketball games. They also displayed spirit by placing posters in the halls before each game. Team spirit would surely have been a lot less if these devoted girls had not been there. A Junior Varsity Cheerleaders; left to right. They kept the school up to date on each sports activity by posting schedules in vulnerable places throughout the build- ing. They also sold This is Trojan Country buttons, sponsored International Championship Wrestling, and had Pep rallies for foot- ball and basketball. The money that was made from these activities was put toward the purchase of a universal weight machine. We now have the much needed weight machine and our sports program's future appears much brighter. 60 Monogram Club A D Both the Monogram and Pep Clubs contributed to the overall spirit of the school. To qualify for membership, these students had to maintain a 93 or above grade-average, and display outstanding character, achievement, and lead- ership. These members kept busy writing, creating, and performing for a very successful Spring Festival. All the members enjoyed producing this annual event. Other ac- tivities included picking up trash in the parking lot and attending the state convention. The Beta Club again had the responsibility of carrying on the election of Mr. and Miss Bandys. All seniors with an 85 or above grade-average were qualified to run in this election. Greg Cox and Cindy Ratchford were chosen by majority vote. These two students represented Bandys in parades and were in the court at the Spring Festival. They are shown on page 200. This monthly newspaper contained such items as horoscopes, song dedi- cations, surveys, birthdays, and the local gossip. More informative news was related in the sports and club activi- ties coverage. Also, there were some very good articles written by different members of the staff. Mrs. Clare Miller took on the added responsibility of sponsoring the Ban-Troia. She enjoyed the new and dif- ferent challenge of helping the students prepare the paper. As improvements were made during the year, future issues of the Ban-Troia promised to become even better. 70 Ban-Troia A Mrs. Clare Miller (sponsor) helped the Ban-Troia staff when they encountered dif- ficulties. For the first time, all seniors had English the same period — sec- ond. One of the reasons this was set up was so that when seniors needed to have a class meeting, they could have it that period and not disturb all the other classes. We soon found out, however, that this was not always so. The major reason for this problem was the bringing in of students from the School of the Arts. They conducted classes every Tuesday and Thursday for approximately three months. This used up valuable class time and caused seniors to have to forfeit several needed class meetings. The presentations by the School of the Arts people were in- teresting to some and boring to others, but informative to all. English was again divided into three main categories — college, technical, and work bound. Classes were set up on a semester basis with most students changing classes at mid-year. Each division studied different topics, but every teacher tried to teach the basics — reading, grammar, and composition. As teaching methods were improved, prospects for bet- ter English students seemed inevitable. 72 English A Mrs. Patsy Rogers explained several definitions to her class. B Jimmy Lewis stated an im- portant fact during a simu- lated trial in Advanced English. With the help of new books, speech, grammar, and his- tory of the country were all emphasized. In correspondence with the larger number of classes, the French Club also in- creased immensely. They had a record high of 120 members. As always the French Club sponsored the annual Christmas Dance. But this year a disco, with Big WAYS disc-jockey Sandy Beach, took the place of a live band. It being the only formal dance for the entire student body, a big turn out showed it to be a success. A Mrs. Kaye McConnell, French teacher, explained verb conjugation to her French II students. French 77 Math Expands With much emphasis on math and science in the world today, Bandys has an extensive Math Department. It ranges from general math to trigonometry and a little calculus. This corresponds with the needs of each stu- dent The loss of Mrs. Mc- Daniel brought Bandys a new teacher, Mrs. Colette Bolick. She teaches general math and Algebra I. As the knowledge for math increased, so did the size of the classes. Because of this, three of the four math teachers were teaching in their major. AA 78 Math A Mrs. Bolick explained to her class the process of working out written problems. B Mr. Hilderbran assisted a group of senior girls in trigo- nometry. E Mrs. Teague showed her Alge- bra I class how to solve equa- tions. Math 79 Living Science As technological ad- vancements are made, sci- ence becomes even more important in everyday life. This year precision in the metric system was empha- sized through the use of labs. Through actual experi- ence much more knowledge was gained. The Science Club prac- ticed this by going to the North Carolina Zoo. There they experienced a close-up view of exotic animals and their behavior. As science expanded, so did the minds of each stu- dent. A A tB ▼ C 80 Science A Karen Spencer did an experi- ment while Lori Sigmon wrote down the data. Science 81 A New Beginning History is a study of not only the past but also the present and future. Each teacher tried to utilize these areas of time in teaching their students. Students were taught to learn from the mistakes of the past, to understand and accept the present, and to plan for the future. As the bicentennial year drew to an end and a new president was inaugurated, everyone's thoughts turned to hopes of a better and brighter future. ▲ A 82 History A Mr. Bob Kilby listened to his students' current events. They were Data Pro- cessing Business Law and Business Math Business Manage- ment. These added courses greatly improved the students' understanding of the business world. Due to the addition of the new courses, the member- ship of the Future Secretaries' Association doubled. The main project of the FSA was to sponsor a Womanless Beauty Pageant. The pageant contestants consisted of not only repre- sentatives from the student body but also certain faculty members. The contestants showed themselves to be witty and talented. The talent ranged from Greg Cox's strip- tease to Ronnie Deal's ballet. The climax came when Greg Cox was crowned queen. The pageant proved to be not only humorous but also very entertaining. Business 85 Child Care Introduced This year, the pitter- patter of little feet was heard in Bandys' halls as a Child Care Center was added. This was a two hour credit course — one hour of instruction and one hour of actual working experience with the children. The class was a learning experience not only for the students but also for the pre-school- ers. The people in the com- munity also benefitted from this service by having an educational place to bring their children. Mrs. Linda Spencer took the responsibility of han- dling the Child Care Center. Students who took this course were allowed to come to school for three periods and then work for the rest of the day. These students were graded by their employers. Mr. M. D. Honeycutt, Industrial Cooperative Training Coordinator, tried to teach his students all aspects of living. Topics such as how to make a living, how to get a loan, and how to obtain social security benefits were discussed throughout the year. Mr. Honeycutt urged his students to join the Vocational Industrial Club of America (VICA). As more students became involved in this program, more on-the-job training was obtained. Due to this, many new activities were introduced and made available to the students. Such games as ping-pong, handball, weightlifting, and badminton were enjoyed by each P.E. class. This meant there was a wider range of games to pick from and each one helped to develop a specific part of the body. Because of these factors, our physical education pro- gram was improved. 98 Physical Education A Doug Howard concentra- ted on his opponent be- fore returning a serve. Physical Education 99 Trojan Band Takes Honors At Carousel Parade Even though the Trojan Band declined in number, they proved that they did not lack in talent. It was not the quantity, but the quality. Besides performing at the half time shows at the foot- ball games, they also contributed to the spirit at the pep rallies and at some home basketball games. Our Trojan Band also made their mark in the county and state. Our band ventured to the Carousel Parade and came away with many honors and awards: Marching, first place; Color Guards, second place; Drum Majors, second place; and Majorettes, second place. We were also well represented at the Piedmont Band Camp. We won the following awards: Majorettes, first place; Drum Majors, second place; Sabre, first place; and Color Guard, third place. For the first time, Bandys placed members on the All-State Band. Greg Sherrill (saxophone) and Rick Price (trumpet) won this honor. The congratulations go not only to the fine members who received each award, but also to Mr. Sam Harbinson. To become a member, a stu- dent had to have a grade- average of 85 or above. Mrs. Colette Bolick and Mrs. Karolyn Thornton were in charge of this tremendous group. They kept active doing such things as helping with open house and career day, doing special favors for the teachers, and taking trips to area high schools and colleges. These students did everything they could to better the school and the educational system. Faculty and students alike have benefitted from this new situation. Teachers' Aides 107 Guidance Department Adds Mini-Mester And Career Day With the loss of Mr. W. A. Sigmon, Mr. Rex Sigmon was added to Bandys' guidance department. Mrs. Karolyn Thornton and he assisted college-bound students in apply- ing to various colleges, brought to the school representa- tives from major colleges, and were always willing to listen to each student's problems. They introduced a new concept for a spring break — mini-mesters. For three days these mini-mesters were held. It turned out to be enjoyable for the students as they took only two courses of their interest. These ranged from golf, soccer, and ballet to firearm safety, yoga, and peer coun- seling. Career day was another addition. This consisted of a career interest survey, which resulted in each student get- ting to learn about three careers of his choice. The guidance counselors picked two young men to attend Boys' State at Wake Forest University. For the first time, four students, instead of the traditional two, were nominated for the Morehead Scholarships awarded by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
