THE THE SENIOR CLASS BANDYS HIGH SCHOOL Catawba, North Carolina As the years come and go, we would like for the memory of the one year spent by the students in Bandys High School to grow fonder. With this in mind, we have attempted to give glimpses of the people and activities, so that by turning the pages, the scenes of our school life may remain in your memories un- changed. ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS We, the Senior Class of Bandys High School, gratefully dedicate this first volume of The Trojan to our parents. For twelve long years, they have encouraged us to a successful school life.Only our parents, with their wisdom, patience and love could know that sometime in the dim future we would realize first what they have done for us. This dedication is made with love and the assurance that they have not labored in vain. Their inspiration has led us thus far and points to a future limited only by our own ambitions. There is one among our number whom we love for his friendliness, his understanding sympathy, his real sincerity and his unwavering loyalty. He has unselfishly given his best to the building of a fine school. In grateful appreciation of the many services he rendered us, we honor Mr. William L. Guy, our Principal. LEONARD JONES History General Science Class History Twelve years ago, in the year 1943, a large number of bright-eyed youngsters began their long awaited journey through school. Part of these students entered Balls Creek and the others entered Sherrill’s Ford School. We could not look into the years before us and see the friends we were to gain; the few we were to lose; the joys and sorrows we would share. At first we were a little shy and timid, but soon we learned that school could be much fun. We soon began to make new friends and to have the feeling of unity. For this one fact we were proud--that we were a group of individuals working together as one. We eased along in those grade years with little thought of tomorrow--and then came 1951, and we entered our freshman year in high school. These next four years were to be our happiest ones. .1 ■ M Twenty-three eager freshmen began at Sherrill’s Ford and sixty-five at Balls Creek. Every member of those freshmen classes was eager to learn the joys of high school. The first few weeks of high school, we wandered around slowly, trying to adapt our- selves to our new school life. We were not accustomed to changing classes and having different teachers for the different subjects. We liked this very much. As we entered Che sophomore class, we realized that our goal was closer, and to at- tain our goal we must work harder. Several members of our classes were tapped for the Beta Club. We also had students represented on the basketball teams and in different activities. :V; Then in 1953, we entered the junior class. We felt just a little more important and held our heads higher as we planned our class plays and banquets. “Faith, Hope, and Flaritv” was presented at Sherrill's Ford and the Balls Creek play was entitled, “The Eager Miss Beaver. These plays were a big success. At both schools a bond of unity had grown between the students and we were like big happy families. Then 1954 finally came and due to consolidation, fifty-four seniors from both Sherrill’s Ford and Balls Creek entered the new consolidated high school, Bandys. We missed the old schools, but our new school became dear to our hearts in just a few short days. We entered the senior class fully aware of the fact that we were on the last step of our journey. We were happy, yet just a little sad at the thought. As the days passed in the senior year, we became closer and friendship with our classmates deepened. There were so many things to do this last year--the publishing of the yearbook, the TROJAN, the different clubs, sports, Junior-Senior Banquet, and Senior Play- - that caused our year to pass swiftly. We suddenly realized that graduation day was near, and we were to be the first graduating class of Bandys High School. We realize that we are stepping into a future with opportunities and misfortunes, but we are willing to accept the good with the bad and continue, as always, to strive toward a life richly blessed by success and happiness. As we leave we feel we have lived the most wonderful years of our lives; yet we face the future with a smile. May everyone we have known and loved in school always-be happy. Had it not been for the patience and understanding of our teachers and principals at Sherrill's Ford and Balls Creek, and Mr. W. L. Guy, our principal, and the eleven teachers at Bandys, we could never have attained our goal. Now as we leave, we will not say good-bye - -just so long and God bless you. Soon we 11 go our separate ways And new friends we shall find, But none will ever be so true- As you, dear classmates of mine. At Balls Creek, Sherrills Ford, and Bandys, Meet me, dear classmates, in memory- Meet me in all the old familiar places Just to recall the fond used-to-be. The days now are swiftly passing And our goal at last we can see. Let’s put our faith in God, and On the throne of success we shall be. By . . . Betty Poovey Class Song (Tune of Vaya Con Dios) Now our school days here are o’er; the years are ending. An inviting call to us the future’s sending. Farewell, dear classmates, we’re leaving. May God be with you always. Now the class of ’55 must face tomorrow. We will share the happiness, forget the sorrow. Farewell, dear friends, we’re leaving. May God be with you always. When days are dark and spirits low, Meet me, dear friends. In memory we will go To a place dear in our hearts; take the key And open wide the door that means so very much to me. Now the time for us to part is drawing nearer, And our friendship that we’ve shared could not be dearer. Farewell, dear Bandys, we’re leaving. May God be with you always. As the sun sank into the western horizon, the old house took on a look of beauty that is seen only in things of nature. Shelia and I tipped up onto the veranda and lightly sounded the large, brass knocker, which was corroded from age. The gentle tapping of a cane told us that someone was ap- proaching the door from within the old house. The door opened. In the evening shadows we saw « small, feeble lady peering at us inquisitively. She pulled her large white shawl about her small shoulders and smiled in welcome. “Madam,” we said, “we are members of the class of 1955 of Bandys High School. We shout'd like to spend the evening talking with you about the futures of our classmates. “My dears, she said, “come into my living room, youth refreshes me. Without waiting for a second invitation, Shelia and I went into the inviting room and curled cozily upon the well-worn chairs which stood before a cheerful fire. The little, old lady, who had settled herself in an old-fashioned rocker, glanced up at us and said, “So you are about to end your high school life? Well, my young friends, your lives are now only in the oudding stage. Up to the present you have been busy filling your impetuous minds with useful knowledge. From your radiant faces I can see that you have kept your minds and emotions pure. See that you keep them so, for ‘As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he . “Now, my dears, I will look into the future and see what it has in store for you and your classmates. “In 1965 I see: Donald Arndt is head basketball coach at Lenoir Rhyne College.
