Constant Practice Produces Winners I feel that cross country has been the toughest sport that I have ever participated in. Not only has it built stamina and strength it has provided a quality of leadership. There were times of defeat but it was always followed by thrills of victory. I am never going to regret being a part of Mrs. Mazurek's cross country program, stated Senior Tina Doebbler. Each member of the cross country team put forth their supreme effort in every 2 mile run. Daily practices began in ear- ly August and continued throughout the season under the supervision of Coach Barbara Mazurek. The team participated in several practice meets in order to prepare themselves for the district meet which was held on the Bandera High School carn- pus. Overall the team placed third in the district meet losing the first place title to Boerne by only 3 points. Beckie Clements placed fourth, with a time of 13.18, allowing her to qualify for the regional meet. Nancy Patton placed 6th - 13.44 and Tina Schott placed 7th - 13.59. Coach Mazurek summed up the season by saying, Let us not measure the worth of this '83 cross country season solely on the basis of points scored and medalslmeets won, but remember also, the individual successes, victories, accomplishments and personal goals that were achieved. From our seniors we had ex- perience, leadership and certainly the Will to Win. As a group our runners reflected great attitudes and a willingness to work. The Bible verse, 'whatsoever a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,' comes to my mind, we thought we were winners, so we were. Tim Lurker, the only male cross country participant, runs a steady pace until the end. 104 Cross Country Beckie Clements regains her breath after once again placing in the top ten.

l l The varsity team had the Wil l to Win and was predicted to dc so, but even its winning attitude could not change the outcome. The varsity girls basketball team worked under first year coach, Shawna King. The girls started district play with a winn- ing record of 3-0. However, the girls were defeated by rivals, Smithson Valley and Boerne, downing their record to 3 wins and2losses. The 10 girls and Coach King started the second round deter- mined to win. The teams high hopes were halted when they were again defeated by the same two teams. The challenging season came to an end with a district record of 6 wins and 4 losses. The 1983-84 basketball season was a hard fought journey containing stiff competition and close calls. Coach King always offered words of encouragement, to the girls to do their best at all times. Each practice consisted of en- thusiasm and desire to improve skills. Coach Shawna King summed up the season by saying, The road to success runs uphill and our season was a tough climb. The girls made slow but steady pro- gress never looking back to our ' first stumbles. Due to outstanding senior leadership, enthusiasm by all, and lots of grueling 'suicides' Qexer- cisej our basketball season was a success. Coaching the girls' basketball program at BHS has been one of the most challenging and enjoyable times of my life. I can't begin to tell my players how proud I am to be their coach. Thanks, girls, for a super year! Top Right: Kathy Ryan, guard, uses all of her concentration to put the ballin the basket while her opponent attempts to distract her. Bottom Right: Tina Doebbler, first team all-district player, stuffs the ball in the basket. 106 Girls Basketball 1, sr ... ...ts -f M Q SKQ tis 1 if-525, ,......mf.ss -s ,gm ,sag-sag .
