SCHOOL PERSONNEL Miss Carolyn Witt is the school secretary. She is shown here discussing a letter she has typed for Mr. Echtenkamp. Mr. Frank Larsen has been the custodian for 11 years. One of his many jobs is putting up the tables for tne school lunch program. Mrs. Donald Hermelbracht, assistant cook for four years, prepares cornbread for another meal. Headcook for 13 years, Mrs. Elwin Fuller sets milk on the tables for the second grade. Rodney Schultz is the otner student janitor. Larry and Rodney share the work in the new addition. Another duty is sweeping the floors every night. Larry Abendroth, a student janitor, helps out in the new addition to the school. There are many odd jobs to do including washing sinks and moving furniture around. He ad lee BONNIE KONOPIK SENIORS SNEAK TO LAKE OKOBOJI At 4:30 on the morning of May 17, fourteen sleepy seniors, sponsored by Mr. and Mrs, Tushla and Mr, Head lee, noarded the bus for Lake Okoboji. The underclassmen were surprised when they came to school to find Mrs. Alexander's room filled with newspapers, and an old-fashioned outhouse in the hall for Mr. Urwiler. A nourishing breakfast was eaten at Le Mars, Iowa about 6:00. Arriving at Arnolds Park, many hours were spent exploring the park, riding the giant roller coaster and bumper cars, in the fun house, playing mini-golf, and naturally eating. After supper tne class went on a moonlight cruise. A combo furnished the music for a dance. Later the class boarded the bus and headed for home. Sioux City was the scene for a midnight snack. The seniors arrived home at 2:00 a. m. sleepy, although they experienced a fun-filled, exciting day--a a ay which will always be remembered. Sponsors wait for the boat to leave shore. Senior boys gather together on the boat ride. The captain gives an inside view of the lake from the pilot house. Lowell Nolting gets ready to putt. The gang gathers together for a posea picture. The roller coaster ride attracts the boys. The early morning work went into Mrs. Alexander's room. IUWU IV “ 16 you IT I Gary and Larry take I a load off their minds. SENIOR ACTIVITIES Eighteen seniors gathered for their final year at BHS. Many fun-filled times followed during the next months. At the first class meeting, they elected Joe Sorensen as president, Gene Pagels as vice-president, and Jim Fuller as secretary-treasurer. Class sponsors were Mr. Headlee and Mr. Tushla. A day was skipped to go to Omaha for an educational tour of tne banks and a stock exchange office. Bonnie Konopik, Shirley Schultz, and Sharon Zwygart traveled to Wayne for an Accounting Contest on March 23. Bancroft ranked fourth out of the sixteen schools competing. Bonnie Konopik and Gene Pagels reigned over the Homecoming activities. Shirley Schultz and Jim Fuller were the senior attendants. The seniors held a Christmas dance with the Tories” providing the music. Later Santa arrived to hand out the presents. Lettermen this year were Gene Pagels, Jim Fuller, Alan Simonsen, Joe Sorensen, Robert Sorensen, Reg Roth, Lowell Nolting, Larry Van Kirk, Dean Tietz, and Jonn Bring. Shirley Schultz was a senior cheerleader. Of the six class members that took the Regents Scholarship Test, Joe Sorensen qualified for the Regents Scholarship with Dean Tietz receiving honors as alternate. Jim Fuller, Gene Pagels, and Alan Simonsen were unable to go on Sneak Day because they participated in the State track meet on May 17. Commencement brought the end to ball games, class plays, proms, banquets, musical activities, and studies at BHS for eighteen seniors. ORGANIZATIONS MUSICAL SPOTLIGHT Brass Sextet: Joe Sorensen, Larry Abendroth, David Macklin, Rodney Schultz, Bobbi Copple, Larry Van Kirk. Trombone Trio: Larry Abendroth, Joe Sorensen, Gerald Kubik. Mixed Quartet: Larry Van Kirk, Bobbi Copple, Sally Lutjen, Rodney Schultz. Flute Trio: Sharon Zwy-eart, Jan Sorensen, Connie Lutjen. The high point of the musical year took place at the Wayne State College. Many people participated in tiie musical activities and the achievements were outstanding. Out of seventeen entries we had ten superiors, five excellents, and two good ratings. Joe Sorensen, Sally Lutjen, David Macklin, Trombone Trio, Dirty Dozen, Girls Trio, Mixed Quartet, Madrigal, Band, and Chorus were awarded with superior ratings. The following people received excellent ratings: Brass Sextet, Mary Lou Vogt, Flute Trio, Gerald Kubik, and Girls Glee. Christy Johnson and Girls Sextet received good ratings. There were six soloists: Joe Sorensen, Christy Johnson, Sally Lutjen, David Macklin, Mary Lou Vogt, and Gerald Kubik. BACKERS OF THE GREAT TEAMS The Pep Club started out the year with 37 members cheering our boys to victory. Seventeen girls attended all the games and received chevrons at the Athletic Banquet. Other members received a bar and the freshman girls received an emblem. Officers were selected at our first meeting and were selected as follows: Bonnie Konopik, President; Sharon Zwygart, Vice-President; and Sally Lutjen, Secretary-Treasurer. Mrs. Joe Alexander and Carolyn Witt were sponsors and put up with the Pep Club on the bus to and from the games. Sandy Marr, Karen Ross, and Sally Lutjen gave'an oral interpretation of prose literature. Sandy received a superior at the contest. Television news commentaries were given by Allan Roth and John Ortmann. Allan rated excellent. FINE The one act-play, No Greater Love, was presented at the Logan Valley Contest at Newcastle, and received a good. It was a drama portraying the internal struggle of a young doctor who was trying to choose between riches and fame, and loyalty to his family and friends. The play cast included Ellen Gatzemeyer, Mary Leitow, Connie Lutjen, John Bring, and Dean Tietz. The play, as well as all the other dramatics entries, was directed by Mrs. Glenn Schilling. Poetry readings were presented by Roxanne Metzger and Robert Sorensen. Robert rated excellent. Alan Roth, rated superior, and Terry Mohl, rated excellent, took part in group discussion. Karmen Tonjes and Pam Tietz gave interpretive public addresses. Pam received a good. loan Ronnenkamp received a superior, for her extemporaneous speech. ARTS? Robert Sorensen, Doug Mohl, Lyn-ette Brehmer, and Christy Johnson starred in the one-act drama, The Half Hour , which was chosen for the reading at the Logan Valley Contest. John Bring and Gene Pagels were honorary captains of this season's football team. The Bulldogs had a total of 791.5 yards gained on 180 carries for an average of 4.39 yards per carry. Jim Fuller had the most tackles with 59 unassisted tackles, while Dale Ruehling was the highest yard gainer with 313.5 yards. High scoring player was Reg Roth with 24 points. John Bring and Gene Pagels were voted as honorary team co-captains. The coaches of the Logan Valley Conference selected Reg Roth and Jim Fuller as First-Team All-Conference players. ROUNDBALLERS WIN SIXTEEN Bancroft's season record reached a mark of 16 wins and 6 losses. The highlight of the season was the District championship campaign, which proved that the Bulldogs were really best when they captured the first place trophy, enabling them to go on to the Regional Tournament. Two other first place trophies were added to the BHS collection when the Bulldogs won both the Logan Valley Tournament and the Rosalie Invitational Tournament. The 1967-'68 basketball season produced eight let-termen. Reg Roth, who tallied 333 points for an average of 15 points per game; Alan Simonsen, who was selected for the first team Logan Valley All-Conference led in field goal shooting with 45% and averaged 14 rebounds per game; Dale Ruehling, who had the best free throw percentage with 68%; Gene Page Is, who was selected honorary captain; Randy Schilling, Dean Tietz, Joe Sorensen, and Robert Sorensen. TRACK STARS Coach Phillip Moore, assisted by Darrell Jochum and student trainer, Bob Sorensen, spent many hours preparing the 1968 team for the track; and as a result, seven of the sixteen squad members lettered for their efforts. AlanSimon-sen lettered in the shot put, mile relay, 220-yard dash, and discus; Gene Pagels in the 440-yard dash and the mile relay; John Bring in the mile run; Jim Fuller in the shot put; Dale Ruehling in the high jump, pole vault, 220-yard dash, and the mile relay; and Joel Bring in the two-mile run. The track squad participated in five major track meets this year; Midland Relays at Fremont, Decatur Invitational, the Logan Valley Conference Meet at Wayne, the District Meet at Norfolk, and the State Meet at Kearney. The highlight of the season was when Alan Simonsen, Gene Pagels, Dale Ruehling, Doug Echtenkamp, and Jim Fuller received first place ratings at the District Meet qualifying for the State Meet. The faculty and coaches enjoy a leisurely meal. The 1967-'68 Athletic Banquet was held April 26 at the school gym. A delicious meal, served by the Zion Ladies Aid, was followed by the presentation of awards with Mr. Moore presenting the football and track awards, Mr. Tushla, the basketball awards, and Carolyn Witt the pep club awards. Mr. Headlee received a sweater from the members of the music department for the fine job he did at the music contest in Wayne. HOMECOMING ’68 Bonnie Konopik and Gene Pagels reigned at BHS's second annual Homecoming. Jim Fuller and Shirley Schultz were senior attendants to the king and queen. Rockne Sorensen, Carma Pagels--freshmen attendants; Jan Sorensen, Charles Tietz- -sophomore attendants; and Debbie Wegner and Dale Ruehling—junior attendants. Getting revenge before the game. Hard work and much preparation was climaxed with the second annual Homecoming of BHS which was held October 20. On Thursday evening the students of BHS met at the school and journeyed downtown with a customary snake dance. After the pep rally the group followed by a battered car continued to the park. At the park the Homer dummy was thrown into the fire. A wiener roast was enjoyed by all. Friday evening the public was invited to the school gym where Mr. Urwiler, master of ceremonies, introduced the royalty. The freshman attendants were Carma Pagels and Rockne Sorensen, sophomores were Jan Sorensen and Charles Tietz, and the junior attendants were Debbie Wegner and Dale Ruehling. The senior candidates were Bonnie Konopik, Shirley Schultz, Gene Pagels, and Jim Fuller. Nancy Sorensen, the queen of '67, crowned Bonnie Konopik as queen. Paul Manning, the king of '67 crowned Gene Pagels as the mS Rockne Sorensen, Randy Bray, Rodney Tietz, Joel Bring, and Ricky Brehmer were responsible for making the dummy. 33 PROM 68” Sponsors of the Junior and Senior classes discuss the evening’s proceedings. The south wall featured a coral reef and Davey Jones' Locker. An assortment of sea animals, treasure chests, and a sunken boat also decorated the gym. For entertainment Jan Sorensen, Bev Van Kirk, Connie Lutjen, Galen Petersen, Jay Copple, and Charles Tietz gave a dialogue entitled Mutiny on the Bounty Ship . The music for the prom was furnished by The Fay Hoagan Experiment. They proved to be a very popular combo. And Lot's wife turned to a pillar of salt. The girls worked very hard at painting fish. They first elected officers which are as follows: Dale Ruehling-president; Randy Schilling-vice-president; Debi Dixon-secret ary-treasurer, ana Wayne Leimer-news reporter. Debbie Wegner ana Dale Ruehling represented the juniors at Homecoming in October. In December, the juniors took part in County Government Day at West Point. Debi Dixon and Ranay Schilling were chosen girl and boy staters. Among the eleven boys that participated in sports, four lettered. They are Doug Mohl, Randy Schilling, Gordon Sorensen, and Dale Ruehling. Bobbi Copple, Debi Dixon, and Debbie Wegner, tne varsity Cheerleaders from our class, faithfully cheered our boys to victory. Several members of the class also participated in the Jr. -Sr. class play and the operetta. The main event of the year for the juniors was putting on the prom on May 10. The juniors spent many nectic hours working on the prom Fantasy of the Sea. ' The gym was transformed into an under water aquarium which included different sea creatures and sunken treasures. All the juniors were well rewarded by seeing their job well done. Of course, they were all anxious to have a party, so they started the year by having a gym party to welcome the freshmen. The lettermen were as follows: Brad Buch-holz, Jay Copple, Doug Echtenkamp, Chuck Tietz, Rodney Zwygart, and Galen Petersen. A word of gratitude goes to all the other sophomore boys that participated in sports. Bev Van Kirk, JanSorensen, and Mary Lou Vogt led cheers for the reserve basketball team.
