This is the picture that comes to me: Our high school is people--teenagers and all. It's assemblies and classes and a rush in the hall. It’s panic at grade cards; it's orange and black. It's thrills and excitements that never grow old. Suspense fills the hallways, and rivalry's keen. All yearn for a scholarship; who will be Queen? Our high school means projects and clubs with their fun. And everyone working till all tasks are done; Tense moments at ball games--Will we win or not? That Fightin' Bulldog spirit means more than we thought! What is our high school? What is its story? We've told it here in all of its glory! 3 Some Individualism MARILYN RUEHLING Citizenship Award - Girl Stater RICHARD RONNENKAMP Valedictorian MARY GATZEMEYER Oratorical Contest - ROBERT ORTMANN Boy Stater DENNIS ENGELBART Salutatorian DENNIS CARLSON Logan Valley All-Conference 4 Seniors MARY GATZEMEYER DENNIS ENGELBART JOSEPH LIANG CONNIE KILGORE ROGER MOHL SPONSOR DENNIS CARLSON ALLEN COOK MR. ALEXANDER MELVIN VOGT Our Twelfth Year On the first day of school, nineteen seniors gathered for their last year at BHS. During the months that followed, we had many busy, fun-filled times. At our first class meeting we elected Dick Ronnenkamp as our president, Dennis Engelbart as vice-president, and Cheryl Gatzemeyer as secretary-treasurer. Our class sponsors this year were Mrs. Mary Alexander and Mr. Daryle Urwiler. Peach and mint green were chosen as class colors and white carnations were selected as class flowers. The senior class motto was The greater the obstacle, the greater the challenge. Color Day King and Queen chosen from the senior class were Dennis Engelbart and Mary Lynn Elsasser. Senior attendants were Cheryl Gatzemeyer and Dick Ronnenkamp. Everyone took part in our senior class play, Rest Assured, on April 3, either as actors and actresses or stage hands. After the play, we all pitched in and sold lunch to raise money for Sneak Day. Sneak Day, that long-awaited day in a senior's life, was May 1. We went to Lake Okoboji and had a very fine time. We all enjoyed ourselves very much at the banquet and prom, Saturday, May 9. Our sincere thanks to the juniors, it was great fun! Baccalaureate services were held Sunday, May 24. The climax of our high school career, Graduation Day, was Wednesday, May 27. Now that we have received our diplomas, I am sure we will never forget our four years in BHS and the fun we shared. 8 Seniors Sneak to Lake Okoboji On Friday, May 1, the seniors and their sponsors left in the early morning for Lake Okoboji at Spencer, Iowa. Breakfast was eaten in LeMars, Iowa. Once at the lakes, they rode the giant roller coaster, the bumper cars and other rides. Some of them spent a lot of time in the fun house, too. After lunch, most of the seniors went on the daylight excursion tour around the lake. Airplane rides were next on the seniors’ program. The plane took them for a lovely view of the lake and the surrounding country. They had a buffet supper at Murel's Log Villa after the plane rides. That night there was a moonlight dance cruise on the lake. On the way home, they had a late lunch at Edith and Joe's in Sioux City. The seniors had a fun-filled exciting day - one which they will always remember. Sneak Day 10 UNDERGRADS Undergrad Activities JUNIOR CLASS ° The junior class found twelve in its enrollment, six girls and six boys. They elected Marilyn Ruehling as president, Alice Neel as vice-president, and Carly Nolting as secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Barnes and Mr. Petersen were their class sponsors. The various class members participated in American history, home economics, shop, office practice, mathematics, English, physics, bookkeeping, and typing. Color Day attendants were Carly Nolting and Robert Cook. Cheerleaders from our class were Marilyn Ruehling and Carly Nolting. Robert Cook, David Newell, and Eddie Raasch were lettermen. The juniors journeyed to West Point to County Government Day. Marilyn Ruehling and Robert Ortmann were Girl and Boy Staters. Marilyn also won the Citizenship Award. The Prom theme chosen by the class was Roman Holiday. We enjoyed various class parties throughout the year. SOPHOMORE CLASS Twenty-five students were enrolled as silly sophomores at the beginning of the 1963-64 school term. Their executive branch was as follows: Head Boss - Shirley Ruehling; Second Head Boss - Gene Zobel; Secretary and Penny-Packer - Joyce Tietz; News Reporter - Nancy Zimmerman. Of course, they were all awaiting anxiously to have a party, so they welcomed the freshies at a picnic in the park and then a dance in the school gym. They’ll never forget the mishap Cheerie had at their sleigh riding party. We must not forget the athletic stars in our class. Bert Newell, Dwight Gatzemeyer, and Gene Zobel lettered in football; Gene Zobel lettered in basketball; and Kenny Echtenkamp and Duane Miller lettered in track. A word of gratitude goes to all the other sophomore boys that participated in sports. Cheerie Gatzemeyer, Flora Soenksen, and Nancy Zimmerman led cheers for the boys during basketball season. Janie Samson and Bert Newell represented our class as sophomore attendants to the royal couple on BHS's annual Color Day . All in all the sophomores had a great time this year at parties as well as studying. FRESHMAN CLASS Seven boys and ten girls were enrolled in the freshman class last fall. They elected Paul Manning as class president, Larry Engelbart as vice-president, Judy Macklin as secretary-treasurer, and Nancy Sorensen as news reporter. Their class sponsor was Miss Davis. Color Day attendants for this class were Nancy Sorensen and Paul Manning. Nancy Sorensen was a junior cheerleader. The class enjoyed a picnic and dance with the sophomore class and a gym party of their own. 12 Juniors David Newell Carly Nolting Frank Vogt Marilyn Ruehling Marlin Greenfield Marjean Fuller Robert Ortmann Mary Bring Eddie Raasch Kathy Deer Robert Cook Alice Neel 13 Sophomores Carolyn Witt Marcia Ortmann Beth Munderloh Nancy Zimmerman Carol Vogt Janie Samson Mark Gregory William Duane Bert Gene Sorensen Vogt Konopik Miller Newell Zobel Gene Kenny Donna Marlene Dwight Melvin Elsasser Echtenkamp Dixon Beutler Gatzemeyer Rodick Shirley Ruehling Cheerie Gatzemeyer Flora Nancy Soenksen Johnson Sandy Petersen Joyce Tietz Freshmen Judy Macklin Nancy Sorensen Helen Gatzemeyer Sharon Schademan Karen Carlson Billie Copple Karen Petersen Fayette Petersen John Eby Larry Engelbart Kenneth Deer John Ross Michael Vogt Paul Manning Sally Johnson Dennis Gatzemeyer Mary Lou Leimer junior High The Junior High enrollment consisted of fourteen girls and twenty-five boys. Everyone took part in it. 16 Administration Superintendent - K. J. ECHTENKAMP BOARD OF EDUCATION -Mrs. Hermelbracht, Mrs. Wiig, Mr. Vogt, Mr. Venner, Mr. Deer, Mr. Sorensen The Greater the Obstacle, The Greater The Challenge. Have you, the members of the Class of 1964, accepted the challenge, or have you detoured around the obstacle? We feel your years at BHS have provided you with the basic elementary obstacles and resulting challenges to prepare you for life's chores. I certainly hope that while here you met the challenge and will continue to do so in your future endeavors. To the Class of 1964: PUSH! If you can’t push, PULL! If you can't pull, GET OUT OF THE WAY! In my way of thinking this just about typifies life in general. Some must lead. If you can't lead others, help those who can. If you can do neither, get out of the way of progress. It is my sincere hope that the faculty of Bancroft High have given each of you the tools whereby you may push or at least the ability to pull. The rest is up to you as an individual. 18 Principal - R. D. TUSHLA Staff Our other cook, Mrs. Her-melbracht, also enjoys sewing as a hobby.
