Education is not free; its cost may be high in financial sacrifice and mental strain, but this cost will be repaid many times over. Soasict £du cation PRINCIPAL Robert Tushla I have always considered the class of '61 as my class. Four years ago they started their high school careers. At that time, I started my teaching career. During these past years, I have watched the class progress along the road of success. I most certainly hope that this class has gained as much knowledge and experience as I have during this same period of time. It truly was a gratifying experience to progress along the road of success with this class, the class I call my own! 7 acuity English 11 Librarians Modern Problems MRS. It was a mystery farce in three acts and a great success with the help of our director, Mr. Urwiler, and three capable stage hands. Butch Kai, Bill Cook, and Arlan Rodick. Carol Calloway (Sherry Dixon) didn't know what to do with a family of eccentrics. Sister lone (Mary Leimer) had gone wild over psychiatry. Little brother Sid (Paul Anderson) was crazy about gangsters. Aunt Eunice (Glenda Gatrost) was a push-over for phony mediums. The jittery maid Allie Katz (Judy Lutjen) and the lisping Dicky Bird (Don Schnier) won screams of laughter. Other characters included Miner Hawkwood (Bob Zobel), the mournful caretaker; his humpbacked nephew Benjy (Glen Simonsen); Rex Rosner (Maurice Grone), a young plastic surgeon; Clemuel McClatchin (Lyle Paulsen), an eerie undertaker; and Gerda Ravenstein (Dianne Canarsky), the runaway maniac. 14 The seniors left in a bus at 6:30 A. M. , May 4. Their first stop was at a Fremont cafe where they ate breakfast. After leaving Fremont, they toured Boys Town. The remainder of the morning was spent shopping. At 1:30 the class met and toured the Omaha World Herald building. Later they again had free time. Many of them attended a movie. They enjoyed Cinerama at the Cooper Theatre following a delicious supper at the Fireside. The day was completed by leaving Omaha at 10:30 and eating lunch at Fremont. Upon returning to Bancroft, our sponsors found 14 tired, weary, but happy seniors! We placed Second at the Logan Valley Tournament. We also received the honors of placing First at the District and Regional Tournaments which were quite exciting. After traveling a lot of miles to the surrounding towns, it was quite rewarding to gain all these victories and go on to play in the State Tournament in Lincoln. Congratulations, team, on a job well done! 25 ‘Scutcn t Win at regionals; Bancroft goes to state. tyaeA 1 State Polk's shot In the last 5 seconds brought quick defeat for Bancroft. Ahead at halftime 21-19. I On March 9 for the second time in three years, the BHS basketball team traveled to Lincoln for the State Tourney, an exciting event for all. Our chances were great; jumped to an early lead and kept it throughout most of the game. Polk tied the game in the closing moments, recovered possession, and decided to gamble on a stalling game. A last second desperation shot by Polk dropped through for the winning score, 48-46. Polk went on to win the State Championship. The Bancroft Bulldogs played an exciting heads-up game which will be remembered by all in the years to come. We're behind you RAASCH'S TAVERN PENDER CLINIC 27 Secu K Will I or won't I?? Members of the Bancroft High School Track team for this year were Dennis Miller, Dennis Engelbart, Lyle Soenksen Allen Cook Richard Ronnenkamp Tom Larsen, Cliff Schilling, Alan Gatzemeyer Adrian Abendroth Ronnie Soenksen Jon Gatzemeyer, Larry Anderson, Charles Kai, and Robert Zobel. Coaches Bill Weddingfeld and Bob Tushla were very pleased with the fine showing and the recognition that they gained for Bancroft. Alan Gatzemeyer, one of the team, ran the mile at 4:57.5 at the District Track Meet which was held at Norfolk. This placed him second and won him a berth at the State Track Meet. Another member who almost went to state was Charles Kai, but because of a leg injury suffered that day he failed to make it. The track team did very well this year and won several ribbons, medals, and great recognition. All in all it was a very successful track season. A. J. THOMPSON GROCERY AND CLOTHING 28 DR. LYLE B. Miss Mary Lou Leimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Leimer, was crowned Queen by Miss Ruth Semrau, who was the Queen of '60. Mr. Charles Kai, son of Mrs. Edna Kai, was crowned King by Arlan Bargmann who was the King of '60. The two senior attendants for the king and queen were Dianne Canarsky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Canarsky, and Maurice Grone, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Grone. These four senior members of the Royal Party were chosen by the entire high school. All other attendants were chosen by their own class, except for the two little pages: Dottie Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Anderson, carried the queen's crown; and Mark Nietz, son of Mrs. Margaret Nietz, carried the king's crown. Those representing the freshman class were Mary Lynn Elsasser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Elsasser, and Dennis Engelbart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Engelbart. The sophomore class selected Linda Ostrand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Ostrand, and Clifford Schilling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schilling to represent their class. The junior attendants were Rose Dittbemer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Dittberner, and Richard Daberkow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Daberkow. Miss Judy Lutjen cut the big hoop at the end of the gym for the attendants to walk through. The secretary of the Pep Club, Sandy Nolting, made the opening speech. Judy Brehmer, Vice President of the Pep Club, carried the basket of flowers and gifts. After the king and queen were crowned, they marched to the throne to take their place. The theme of Color Day was Moonlight and Roses. The idea for the theme was originated by Mary Elsasser and Mary Gatzemeyer. After the basketball game the Pep Club gave a dance in the school gym. Once again, the 15th Annual Color Day was majestically climaxed. CITIZENS BANK GENERAL APPLIANCE AND REPAIR SERVICE 23 Se Uvt rftteHcL Kt Dianne Canarsky Maurice Grone Let's get on with the game.
