LIEUTENANT WILLIAM KING The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute believes that the supreme purpose of secondary education is to instill in the rising generation the knowledge, habits and ideals essential to the preservation and betterment of society in accordance with the American traditions of democracy which are adequately expressed in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain finherent andj inalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Moreover, the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute believes that a balance should be maintained between theory and practice so that its pupils may seek immediate employment in that type of effort for which they are by nature best fitted, and furthermore, that the curricula should enable those of its pupils who are graduated to pursue a higher education if they so desire. I
