E 3 5 r YU I Hall we do have CLASS . . . we can hold our heads up high. At a Conference of In- dependent Schools which I attended recently, the topic of evaluation dominated the programme. One expert from the National Association of Independent Schools QUSAQ made this observation . . . You can tell how well a school is functioning as soon as you walk along the corridors . . . if the vibes are right and you have a good feeling about the place, rest assured all is well. I know Christmas 1984 qLeftl Fall Barbeque 1985 IBelowl , -we -sc, this is true of Balmoral Hall and many, many visitors have made such a comment. There is a happy, trusting environment and a sense of co-operation. This is what sets the school apart:THlSlSCLASS! I know that I am leaving a school in good shape, and I have that personal satisfaction of a job well done. I shall miss the daily round of dealing with the various factions that make up the school family and I hope that my successor will have as much pride in the fs. A school as I have had over the years. It is not hard to get to love the halls of Balmoral and l leave you with this final word The secret of success is work! Don't let yourselves down . . . for we pass this way but once. Bless you all, Sincerely yours, I Nl ASIA. N. THOMAS RUSSELL

is gl NN CIC We 65 P SY My final message in the Yearbook. lt will, in actual fact, be the last during the Russell era. The editor has told me that after a decade of service to the school . . . feel free to write as much as you like , and she also told me that the theme is to be WE'VE GOT CLASS! . . . and I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. For me this is a year of looking over the ten years of my term as the school's Head- master. So much has hap- pened. The facility itself would be virtually unrecognizable to former students who return for a visit. The physical plant is outstanding and few schools, if any, can boast of such features as a Computer Laboratory, a 13,000 volume library and two well-equipped gymnasiums . . . and much, much more. Over the years I have seen the enrollment grow from the two hundred range to in excess of three hundred and forty students and there are REAL waiting lists for places, par- ticularly in the Junior school. Most importantly, l have been most encouraged by the measurable improvement in academic standards. We are second to none in this regard and our graduating students are sought after by the best universities in Canada. Surely, there is no better testimony to the dedicated, caring staff than this fact . . . for when all is said and done, it is the teachers who hold the key . . .and here we are definitely well and truly served with distinction. I confess to liking the theme of this Yearbook. At Balmoral
