To see what these are as well as to read what the Grade 12's have to say about each other, turn to page 69. Give us, O give us, the man who sings at his work! Be his occupation what it may, he is equal to any of those who follow the same pursuit in silent sadness. He will do more in the same time - he will do it better - he will persevere longer. - Carlyle The inscription above hangs suitably mounted and framed overlooking the Headmaster's desk in Aikin's House. It was a gift from staff members, the words ringing true of the man who was to guide Balmoral Hall's destiny for a decade - Tom Russell. No doubt the gift was inspired by admiration and respect, but its appropriateness went further, for Mr. RusseIl's dulcet tones could often be heard echoing through the hallways as he went about his daily routine. Here was a man truly enjoying what he did so well- caring for the education of his students. He had that unusual ability to relate to people of all ages and descriptions, from business magnates to Kin- dergarten munchkins lining up for cookies. All were met with a fine sense of decorum, and a lively sense of humor, and were made to feel that they belonged to a special community, the Balmoral Hall family. ln the warmth of his welcome there was no pretense, but rather genuine caring, and an integrity which inspired trust. The hand extended in welcome or congratulation was the same hand which organized and planned the year's events, penned so many enlightening and entertaining Newsletters, and carved the turkey at the Residence Christmas din- ners. lt is now the hand that waves goodbye , and we say goodbye to you, Tom Russell. Thank you for a job well done - you did do more, and you did do it better! Mr. G.E. Because people, above all else, are about care, passion, perception, leadership, listening, commitment, zest, energy, enthusiasm - and love. So you say, what does that have to do with me? Simply put, just this: Balmoral Hall has equipped you to go on to your next life experience carrying an impressive arsenal of these personal attributes to deal with life and with those people who are, or will be, a part of your life. Subtly, occasionally forcefully, those who directed your life at Alumnae receptions, held in seven cities across Canada in the spring of 1986, brought together many alums of B. H. Rupertfs Land and Riverbend Schools. Pictured above at the luncheon reception at Stornowmr in Ottawa are Geills Kilgour Turner Balmoral Hall dedicated themselves to the development of you as a person, someone who can now inner direct your own life, someone who can be her own person, who can make connections. One cannot put a price on the superior education you have had But ycgi, someday, will. And, when you do, we, in the Alumnae Association of Balmoral Hall, hope that your feelings Will guide you to make the contribution in kind to help those graduates who come along behind you. Mcpialpmid, Let's see you there cele- Balmoral Hall '56 K I '81 it BAH 1111 is gl NN CIC We 65 P SY My final message in the Yearbook. lt will, in actual fact, be the last during the Russell era. The editor has told me that after a decade of service to the school . . . feel free to write as much as you like , and she also told me that the theme is to be WE'VE GOT CLASS! . . . and I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. For me this is a year of looking over the ten years of my term as the school's Head- master. So much has hap- pened. The facility itself would be virtually unrecognizable to former students who return for a visit. The physical plant is outstanding and few schools, if any, can boast of such features as a Computer Laboratory, a 13,000 volume library and two well-equipped gymnasiums . . . and much, much more. Over the years I have seen the enrollment grow from the two hundred range to in excess of three hundred and forty students and there are REAL waiting lists for places, par- ticularly in the Junior school. Most importantly, l have been most encouraged by the measurable improvement in academic standards. We are second to none in this regard and our graduating students are sought after by the best universities in Canada. Surely, there is no better testimony to the dedicated, caring staff than this fact . . . for when all is said and done, it is the teachers who hold the key . . .and here we are definitely well and truly served with distinction. I confess to liking the theme of this Yearbook. At Balmoral E 3 5 r YU I Hall we do have CLASS . . . we can hold our heads up high. At a Conference of In- dependent Schools which I attended recently, the topic of evaluation dominated the programme. One expert from the National Association of Independent Schools QUSAQ made this observation . . . You can tell how well a school is functioning as soon as you walk along the corridors . . . if the vibes are right and you have a good feeling about the place, rest assured all is well. I know Christmas 1984 qLeftl Fall Barbeque 1985 IBelowl , -we -sc, this is true of Balmoral Hall and many, many visitors have made such a comment. There is a happy, trusting environment and a sense of co-operation. This is what sets the school apart:THlSlSCLASS! I know that I am leaving a school in good shape, and I have that personal satisfaction of a job well done. I shall miss the daily round of dealing with the various factions that make up the school family and I hope that my successor will have as much pride in the fs. A school as I have had over the years. It is not hard to get to love the halls of Balmoral and l leave you with this final word The secret of success is work! Don't let yourselves down . . . for we pass this way but once. Following the handing out of certificates, a What Not to Wear Fashion Show ended the day of camaraderie. Each year, the Grade 4's attempted the Maypole dance 445, but this year, we also had other en- tertainment. The senior choir danced and sang 415, Arifa Lucman and Manon Lisowski did a rhythmic gym routing 4653 Jill Carter, Bridget Eldridge, Susan Fones and Lisa Hamburg also showed their skill at rhythmics 425. This year, we also had a new uniform fashion show, so we could see the upcoming uniform changes. The high point of the two days though, was the presentation of two paintings to the lady we all know as Rose 155. Rose has been a part of the BH family for several years, as a part of the kitchen staff, but had to leave this year for health reasons. OT IUST FUR IU ICDRS My year as Head Girl of Junior School has been a lot of fun. l have learned a lot and have come to understand the true spirit of BH. This year could not have been successful without the help and encouragement of the Assistant Head Girls, Elinor Simons, Jane Sharif and Wendy lp. Thank you alll There were some special happenings in Junior School this year. Our choirs were exceptional and showed that exceptional and showed that working together brings greater results. Jump Rope for Heart was fun and we raised more than S4,000l We were also very lucky to have Mrs. Hurst as our Head of Junior School. She was always helpful, fair and encouraging, and listened to all our suggestions. We will miss her and wish her well in Min- neapolis. It was with Mrs. Hurst's help that we in Grade 6 were able to restore a former tradition by having our first dance with SJR. It was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended, especially Mrs. Hurst and Mr. Kiddelll lt is sad to end part of your life by leaving Junior School, and I am especially sad to see this year end. Thank you for all your friendship and support, and l wish the new Head Girl as enjoyable a year as I had. Love, Rebecca End of the year duties were handled with the help of Wendy lp lleftl Y 5. I 4, r The Sacrifice What a way to end my life! To think that at one time I was one of the most beautiful trees in the world. I grew up in a magical forest on the edge of time. This enchanted place is filled with every good thing one can imagine. A silvery haze hangs over the trees creating a mystical appearance. lt is the land of dreams which many children visit during their night time adventures. This forest is looked after by a good fairy whose heart is always willing to give and give she did, for she saved me from a terrible fate, ibut that's another storyb. This little tale begins with a girl named Sarah who was very ill with a terrible disease that baffled the poor doctor. Her family had spent what little money they had on trying to buy the right medication, but no cure had been found. Her greatest desire was to have a beautiful Christmas tree, so much so that she could think of nothing else. Alas, her family was too poor to afford this luxury for her. It was Christmas eve, and in her dreams, Sarah's desire for a tree was so great that she wandered into the magical forest. Suddenly she paused and her eyes looked up at my branches. More than anything else, she wanted to take me home and as she disappeared back into the beautiful mist, her beautiful eyes stayed gazing upon me. I was so upset, for I knew somehow that this would be Sarah's last Christmas on earth and I wanted to make her happy. I decided to ask the fairy if I could be Sarah's Christmas tree decorated with all the lovely trimmings. The fairy was willing to grant my wish but said, With all the wishes there must be a sacrifice. If you want to be Sarah's Christmas tree, you will never be able to return home to the forest that you love. I thought for awhile, but I knew that I must make Sarah happy. My mind was made up and I asked the fairy to grant the wish. On Christmas morning, I was shining brightly in Sarah's room. When she awoke she was thrilled - never had she seen such a beautiful tree. To see her so made the sacrifice for me seem worthwhile. That evening Sarah quietly left this world. The next day, I began to feel ill, A part of me was missing. My branches felt dry and my needles started to fall. Sarah's parents wished to discard all memories of that Christmas day and after taking off all of the decorations, placed me on top of the trash heap. I felt as if my life, too, was over. :lc :lc :lc So this is where I am now. How I hate this dump. It really is so unfair that life should take this nasty turn. Oh how l wish that I could go back to the forest and make children happy again. What can I do here? What's that bright flash of light? Why, it's the good fairy, but, she too has a sad look on her face. The lovely fairy turns to stare at me and says, My dear little tree, you have done such a good deed that it hurts me to see you so defected. I cannot take you back home, for it would be against our laws, but I know of another place where I will send you. It is a land even more beautiful than your homeland, where you will once again be appreciated. A new world appears in front of my eyes. It is everything the fairy promised and to complete my happiness, Sarah is here too. Jane Nasser-ShariffGrade 65 The Secret Garden The sun's hot, sultry rays beamed upon the gleamy stones. They glistened and twinkled as the clear drops of dew shimmered like jewels. The pastel pink Iilacs smelled sweet and were intoxicating. The slim, radiating branches were laden with flowers like thick, creamy frosting on a cake. A thick carpet of pansies bordered a path which led to a rose garden. A rose bud as white as the January slow stoos out elegantly from the deep, dark, blackish - green leaves. Thick, prism-shaped thorns jutted out like ever so many guards protecting a frail princess. As if made of thorn silk, the pointed and serrated leaves framed the delicate rose bud. A fiery crimson rose swayed in the scented breeze. The spicy aroma of a cotton candy coloured carnation drifted through the air. Splatters of turmeric yellow sparkled as if gold nail polish had been dripped upon the smooth, soft, satiny petals. A plump, pudgy bumblebee buzzed and hummed by my ear and nuzzled into the honey-sweet nectar of a marigold. The petals were ruffled like a taffeta prom dress. Dusk began to settle like a snow, incoming tide. Slowly and serenely, night fell. Av was also one of the artsy blond club, and we always looked forward to seeing one of her sketches. In Grade 12, Ava's bright red TRUCK and her endless naming of guys that we never saw became her trademark. Coming to and from classes without a lot of fuss, Susan could often be heard mumbling to herself during Geography class, and, upon straightening out her thoughts several minutes after Mrs. Friesen had changed the subject, she would blurt out something like Cocoa beans! Obviously, this caused pure havoc, but we soon got used to it! Good luck next year, Sue, the halls of BH and the tables of Impressions will most certainly miss you. As a graduate of pube- hood and an actual irather than honoraryj member of Grade 12, our artsy blond could often be seen on weekends at The Note , or while in a more 45 social consious mood, at Grapes searching out sockless preps. qLet's not forget her con- tributions to Lox or the in- famous SJR functionsj Monica is also well known for her ruby lipstick, dark sunglasses and passion for white wine andlor Jewish men bearing edible kosher gifts. Monique's in- credible talent is being for- warded to aj sometime, somewhere in the field of fine arts, by perfecting her Marilyn image at Deke parties or cl maintaining her pseudo- intellectual approach to world economic systems. qRumor has it that next year her roommate is no other than DAVID LET- TERMAN!?!5 I love potatoes!! Tamara always did have a knack for organizingthings! Out of school, Tamara's interests were in suntanning, Coke, and a certain S.S., as well as occasional trips to Texas. BH will certainly benefit from having Tamara's help in Residence in 86-87, as an authoritarian figure, this time around. We all hope to see her smiling face scouting the halls of U. of M. next year. We love you and good luck! PARITA Qcontinued from page 839 6. We will always remember Parita coming to school AFTER Monday morning assemblies ready to conquer Chem., Physics, Bio., the list goes on. As a result, she has successfully remained an Honour student since Grade 7. She finally cut her hair in Grade 12, and even received a Dodge Omni for Christmas. We will never forget the day that Parita came to school without her glasses, but not because she had lost them, as we'd expect, but because she got contacts. But, unlike everyone else, she stopped wearing them after a few weeks. We're not sure why, but she did mention something about dropping them in her tea! While some of us went to Grandma Lee's or Sals for lunch, Parita could often be seen rushing off to McDonald's with a carload of hungry girls. The hilarious thing about this was that Parita went to McD's EVERY DAY! In fact, when we couIdn't find her at school, we knew that she had to be at McD's. Parita plans to pursue a career in Medicine at the U. of M. Hey, Parita, where are you going this break? St. Rose again?! Best of luck in the future, Parita, and we will always remember you as Parita in Pink . JANICE qcontinued from page 837 that her good marks aren't a result of Janice's having studied everything back home, or whether she really is that brilliant! London, Australia, Toronto, Singapore, where will she go next? Ac- tually, she's off to the University of Toronto next year to pursue a career in Computer Science. Best of luck, Janice, we will always remember you! JOEY Qcontinued from page 833 Way back in Grade 8, a rather short person with frizzy hair joined the ranks of the class of '86. Soon after her arrival, we all knew who Joey was, but we weren't sure if she was just kidding or was sorry! Everyone in the class will remember that EVERY one of Joey's comments was followed by Just kidding. or l'm sorry. We finally got her to stop saying this, but only by using brute force! Joey's main method of transportation was a red station wagon. When asked if she had a car at school, Joey would either say she had her mom's car or her dad's car - but she always had a red station wagon. lt wasn't until the end of Grade 12 that we all found out that there were TWO IDEN- TICAL red stations wagons! Joey's dream for a long time was to become a vet, but cir- cumstances have not allowed her to carry through with this, so she has decided that helping humans will do her just fine. Good luck in Nursing when you get there, Joey, and have a good time at the U. of M. in Arts in the meantime! SHILPA qcontinued from page 839 primarily for keeping to herself, and we were all surprised when the real Shilpa showed herself! Shilpa's many memorable incidents are too numerous to mention, but they included such things as her awe- inspiring knack for being able to silence a whole room with her wacko comments, her duties as SELF-appointed class psychiatrist, her readiness for grad - grad date and all - in September, her daily Soni Smile , her back seat driving, her duo personality of studious student during the day and party animal at night, and her many lunches away from the school, qcould she have been one of the carload?j Shileepa was also quite teasable - but managed to get revenge on me, one of the worst. Our crazy blond responds to many titles, from Grasshopper, Skinny, C-3, to Maniac, and has been an active participant in BH ranging from jungle combat in the hallways, the Grandma Lee's Coffee Club, Batter's Aerobic Hour, to being the founder of the BH Breakers. Although her grade point average is high enough to place her on the Honour Roll, the cost of B.F.'s weekly phone calls have been known to outdo it. For the answer to Kris' question, fMrs. Baillie, what happened to the sin?l, just ask Carolyn! By the way, don't forget to buy some flour, Dennis is coming over. When not at BH Breakers practice, Cheryl could be found at Baba Lee's , sipping coffee and contemplating the meaning of life. Being a true intellect, Cheryl seemed to attract men with great literary interests, receiving strange packages from them in the mail. During her time at BH, Cherie's mode of transport progressed from the bump-down-stairs theory to the Duster. Cher-Bear was very attentive to her physical appearance, and could often be heard saying I need a hair- cut! whilst munching on a celery stick. The walls of BH will forever echo with The Chicken Theme , Hawaii 5-O , and jungle sounds. As Ronald Reagan would say, God bless you, Cheryl! PS. This is not an obituary, C.C. At this tea, the Graduates are welcomed into the ranks of the Alumnae with good food, talk, and a special ceremony at which we all leave our mark at BH - in a cement step in the back yard! Last year when I was honoured to be named Head Girl of Balmoral Hall, any delight I felt was immediately followed by the terror of knowing that I was going to have to stand up here today and address all of you, on our last day as students at BH. During this year I have spoken several times, learned many new things, experienced much delight and happiness and today I feel only pleasure that I can give this address on behalf of all the girls in my class. Over the past several months we have spent most of our time looking ahead to OUR grad dance, and today, OUR Closing Exercises - we have also been considering all of our options for universities, what courses we will take, and whether we will be in residence or at home. We have made many decisions about our future and today I would like to reflect a little on our past. How well I remember my first opening assembly. A sea of green kilts, where everyone seemed to have a best friend. Who would be mine? It wasn't long before we had many great friends. Most of you assembled here today are our parents. Our first thanks is to you, for sending us to BH and supporting us throughout our years here. Seated behind the grads and among the students are the teachers. We all have many different memories of every single one of them: We may forget how to con- jugate the past plus-perfect of the verb etre , - or how to phrase a sentence, - or that a gerund is a verb that acts as a noun, or is it a noun that acts as a verb? Well . . . anyway, - we may forget the formulas for the cos and sin laws, - or that a clothesline with a pulley is not only to hang clothes on, BUT - We will never forget the math teacher who thinks she strikes terror into the hearts of all her students, but we know she's a marshmallow, for nothing is too much trouble when it comes to helping one of her girls, - or the fast moving scientist who is also a closet historical romance author, - or our fabric arts class where we learned a lot more about stitchery, but a whole lot more about life, - the Phys. Ed. teacher who VAI EDICTORY told us how great we all looked in green bodysuits, and did so with a straight face, - or our history buff who was also our chief concilliator teaching us that there were always two sides to a story, and that a peaceful solution is preferable to a confrontation, - and finally, the judge who stands in front of assemblies . Mr. Russell gave us a theme to be our motto throughout the year, among them co-operation, respect, responsibility, and routine. These are the words that we would use to describe him, and we would add - a touch of class! These are only a few of the memories that we will have of our years at BH. ' To Mr. Russell, the teachers, our parents and to the friends we have turned to for comfort - wethank you. I would like to conclude today's address with a memorable quote from TS. Eliot: What we call the beginning is often the end, and to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.
