We are close to half way through a fast moving year. I've never known such a year! Activities ga- lore, a full calendar of events for each term to compliment a full school of happy, vigorous stu- dents, all bursting with ideas to make life at the school more full and rewarding. I am sure this Yearbook will reflect the goings on around our Balmoral Halls! People have often said to me . . . What's the Yearbook all about: what is it for? I can an- swer it very simply. The Yearbook is a record of THE year, which those who attend the school can look at years later and reflect and remem- ber. It is a student publication and a lot of hard work goes into getting it all together. Most of all perhaps, it is a special momento for the Graduates. The class of '84 will treasure this issue more than the rest. It is their year in the sun . I wish every graduate success in whatever fu- ture they choose for themselves. I also want them to keep in touch-a revitalized Alumnae Association is in the works and we'll be contacting all former Balmoral Hall girls. Sincerely, N. Thomas Russell, HEADMASTER Headmastens Report . . . 4 RCTHE BCARD CF COVERNCRS BALMORAL HALL 1983-1984 CHAIRMAN CF THE BOARD Hugh C. Ellis, Chairman Kerry L. Hawkins, Vice-Chairman Suzanne E. I can't believe it either! It seems as though it was just last week that I called my first meeting. This year has been very memorable for me and I'm sure the grads feel the same. The 1983-1984 graduates have made my job en- joyable so I would like to dedicate this book to them. I hope you, the graduates, enjoy this book and look back upon it to remember your last school year at Balmoral Hall. I would like to thank Mrs. Sures and Mrs. Nick- el, my advisors for their assistance. I would also like to thank my staff and my two photographers, Lori Hutchison and Ashleigh Banfield. The familiar sound of keys rattling, suitcases being dragged into rooms, Good-byes to parents and Hel- lo's to old and new friends, the 1983-1984 Residence year was in motion. The past year in Residence has been one of hard work and enthusiasm, not to mention a little bit of fun on the side. Now let us not forget those daily excursions to Lox and Bagels and the Geyser's store, without which, how would we boarders survive? On a quest for securing relationships many activities and functions were organized throughout the year. Some of those were: Halloween festivities, Chinese food with the girls from Hong Kong, a hall decoration contest and the Christmas dinner with the teachers. Also initiated this year was our project of secret pals. Needless to say, all activities were enjoyed, and participated by all. It's been a lot of fun in Residence and I've made some true friendships. It's been a super year and I'd just like to wish the best of luck to next year's Resi- dence. Andrea Moser Head of Residence Head of Residence . . . 32 RESIDE CE CCJU CIL The newly formed Residence Council got off to a great start this year. Elected in October, the council is composed of two Seniors, Susan Dressler and Terri Clarke, two juniors Kelly Maksymetz and lane Goymer, and one foreign student Verna Ng and of course Andrea Moser, the Head of Residence. The council has been very helpful in the organization of the various residence activities. -4. Of course it never would have been like this without such a great executive council-a special thank you to all of them. On the other hand it's ev- eryone in our school with their great spirit which has made the year an all-round success. But we can nev- er forget the teachers who dedicate so much of their time to make our education so far above the rest. With all of these ingredients in one pot you couldn't expect much less than the best. Remember keep your green sox pulled up, your ties tied tight, your shirts pressed and white, kilts pressed, shoes shined and your heads held high and the memories of your school will never be left behind. Our spirit remains. Love ya, Kim and Mary-Lea P.S. Good Luck. fi '2'1 1 Headgirlfschool Captain report . . . 64 Za. fi EXECUTI E AND STUDE T CUU CILS Back-A. Osborn, K. McManus, H. McDonald, M. Will Craig Cowan ever bake for the meetings? We had a splash running the swim meet. Even Miss Robertson and Miss Donney were thrown into the event, literally. We have managed to give names to the school teams. The Iunior teams are called the Bairns and the Senior teams are called the Greensox. We also bought new mascots for the houses. IPlease don't hang Kermit from doors anymorel. We hosted the great Canadian Independent Schools Volleyball tournament with help from teachers, students and parents. We have played a wide variety of sports this year, from basketball to tennis to team handball-which was very tough to live through. I'd like to thank Ms. Robertson, Miss Donney and Miss Iohnson, all the house heads, and an ex- tra thank you to Mrs. Freisen and Mrs. Sharpe for helping with our intramural program. I had a great time running the intramurals and Sports Council this year. Thank you also for putting up with my Get those scoresheets in or no points threats. A----N 1 A ,N-A.v wa -in-p X adm . ,, ,M ARLE E, LIZ, ELAINE, E A, VER A ARLENE FU-Arlene has been a part of the B.H. family since Grade eleven. Apart from her favorite pastimes of sleeping and eating, she has contributed her all towards her academic standings. She is known for her ability for becomming very nervous and also to become quiet. She has a habit of cleanliness, while living in Res, and has been seen throwing important things in the garbage. We do hope that she will always cherish her years at B.H. GOOD LUCK ARLENE ELIZABETH WONG-Liz joined B.H. in Grade 10 from Hong Kong. She has a kindhearted personality, which accounts for the reason why people are willing to make friends with her. She is best known for her writing skills and her ability to swallow tons of food in Res jdelicious foodl. She is also always found in the fever of pop music, and apart from that she enjoys playing badminton, swimming and fishing, during her spare time. We all wish you the very best in your future and take care. ELAINE KWONG-Elaine joined us this year. She is well known for her sweet and friendly smile and she also adds a lot of fun to Res. Although she is new, Elaine quickly found positions in Res-Table prefect and Hall prefect. You might think she is a cheerful per- son however she is also very emotional. Although she is Chinese, she studies very hard and manages quite well. She is a very distinguished Mathematics student. Elaine plans to take Business Administration in University and we wish her the very best of luck. ENA CHU-Ena entered the B.H. family in Grade eleven. She adds spunk to Res and has managed to become popular with members of the opposite sex. She has developed many interests such as swimming, driving, seeing movies and flipping through those body magazines. Although she has a busy social life it does not affect her school life at all as she is on the honor roll. She intends to achieve an M.B.A. and her career goal is to become a business woman. We all wish you the best of luck ..... BUT . . . beware of those University men. VERNA NG-Verna has been studying at B.H. for almost 3 years. As an honor student she spends time on her work and she also spends time playing many sports. She swims and plays badminton on the school team. Verna is in the top twenty-five percent of Canadian stu- dents studying math. Verna's only bad habit is that she studies so hard that she is unable to get up in time every morning. We hope she can find someone at Queen's to wake her every morning. GOOD LUCK VERNA COLLEE IANE, SHAHLA, ALISSA, LIZ COLLEEN KELLY-Colleen first made her debut at B.H. 6 years ago. She was a BOY CRAZY little girl from Fort Garry and she leaves us as an animal lover. She has provided the English class with many laughs and, full course meals. Her driving started off very poorly but after that night of driving through Tuxedo it has improved. Colleen loves animals and has rescued many animals from the Humane Society. She plans to go into zoology and we know with all her prac- tice she'll do very well. GOOD LUCK COLLEEN. IANE GILLIES-lane has brightened our B.H. halls for nine years now, with her ultra bright smile. She is our little pink platinum blond who can be seen screaming and laughing down the halls. She is ad- dicted to All My Children and finds interesting places to watch it. Iane's driving skills were also poor as she hit a cement bridge. Luckily her skills improved. Good luck in commerce lane and keep on gulping -ee those big gulps. SHAHLA KAHN-With a calculator in hand and chem. notes under her arm, Shahla has been a part of our halls for four years now. As an avid member of the Vogue reading club, she has managed to update our uniforms with the trendy Shahla look, which consists of rolled down socks, pulled down tie and tucked up kilts. Loved by all the teachers Shahla has entertained all of our classes. Good luck in the sciences and keep up that cover girl look. ALISSA MALKIN-Alissa has sauntered through our halls for what she calls five long green years . Always on a diet, Alissa's lunch never consists of your average drink, sandwich and desert. Her abilities weren't limited to earning fantastic grades. Another member of the needs improvement driving club, Alissa has had run ins on Wellington and all those turns. We have never met a girl who can get lost for a whole night either. Good luck finding your way in the future Alissa. We know you'll be very successful at whatever you do. ELIZABETH COUGHLIN-Our buddy Lizzie the lizard has grown up in these halls. We can still see those pigtails bouncing down the halls along with her angelic smile. But, looks may deceive. When she sheds her kilt she turns into a true Prep. Head of Ballater in Iunior school Liz became a sportsaholic tanning her body on the windsurfer. So Liz, when are you going to get your drivers license? She will be remembered for her giggles and microscopic handwriting. Good luck in Commerce, Liz and call us when you make your first million. w w w r V 1 li iw 33 5 I ICANN, KRISTI , LYNNE, MIGHELE, IESSIGA IOANN IWASYK-Ioann the always smiling jolly old soul of Grade 12 has been a part of our family for Q f two years. During these two years her best friend was -im -4 i A H Res Ibefore that curfewl. Although Grad '83 was not that much fun for you we all know that in '84 there will be someone with the initials R.S. sitting in the empty seat. We know you'll never forget that night out with the girls talking about a certain rodent . Good luck in the future, we'll never forget you, but when we want to find you the first place we'll look will be the University of Brandon. KRISTIN ROGERS-Kristin, better known as Miss Parallel Parking has been a part of B.H. for three years. She helped put the smiles on the students by re-opening the canteen during her last year. Kristin for the most part of the year, has been seeing a fella initialed W.F. and we all remember him from our wake-a-thon. She plans to further her education at the U. of M. and later return to school as a teacher. Well, Kristin, Best of luck in the future and always remem- ber put your whole body in, before you close the door. LYNNE THORSTON-Lynne has been the Winnipeg Beach Bum of the Grade 12 class. She tells us she loves water but we know something else. At Lynne's arrival in Grade II she tested out Res life and now she knows better. After graduating she plans to go on the GAP program in England for six months. Knowing Lynne's fantasy, the grade twelves will be attending a wedding the summer of '85 if not sooner. Good luck in the future and keep smiling. MICHELE PROVIS-Mitch has been a veteran of B.H. for 13 years. In the last year Michele was Head of Ballater. Until she learned the real meaning of life, she enjoyed rides to Agassi, but boy did she mature and B.G. will vouch for that. She has won the Miss Mouth award twice and will never live it down. Seriously though, Mitch, we hope you reach all the goals you set for yourself and we are really going to miss you. IESSICA BURLESON-Iessica has been coming to B.H. for six years. She has definitely left her mark on the school. Her name has been on the honor roll since grade seven. Iessica is a quiet person not one of the prominent figures in our class. Her friendly nature will be an asset in any career she chooses, although her dream is to become an actress. Perhaps some day our friend will be a famous movie star, leaving her mark on the world. Her talents are many, acting, music and of course french. Well Iessica, see you in the funny papers. HEIDI, SUSAN, SARAH, ANDREA, ANDREA HEIDI MCDONALD-Heidi toddled into B.H.'s nursery class and declared I want to be Santa Claus , well from there on in, she hasn't let us forget that she's still around. Heidi ends her B.H. life as the energetic head of Breamar. This year the rade 12's chose her as the least likely to write Tess of the D'Ubervilles. While at B.H. she was on the grad committee, Student council volleyball, badminton and ..... ski weekends. Next year Heidi will be going off to McGill to take Arts. We won't forget Ya. . . .One final question. . . when are we going to get tickets? PAULA KILGOUR-Paula otherwise known as the pookie , joined us back in grade six. This year she was our superb S orts Ga tain. When it came to sports, Paula was always tllere with a smile. On top of those funfilled French classes she found time to join all the sports teams, basketball bein her favorite. Paula was most memorable on ski weekenci proving herself to be the big Wipeout . Good luck at Bemidji State University next year Paula. B.H. will miss a party heartier like you. SUSAN ELLIS-Susan has been at B.H. for most of her existance on earth, as we know it today lminus her brief sojourn in Torontol. If Iyou think she's punctual, then you just don't know her-w at time does school start Sue? Sue was a tad h per on ski weekend as we saw when she dented a wall with her body. lForce I mass x accelera- tionj What would Sue do without physics? Don't forget to bring I.D. to movies, Sue. Lots of Luv 'n Mushy stuff. SARAH KAY-Sarah lscaryj has graced the halls since nursery school and ends her time here as Library perfect. fSarah you are supposed to be quietl. Sarah's lifelong dream has been to be Canada's first woman Prime Minister. Next year she is heading off in search of knowledge, justice and a right on time. Keep working on that half beat. . .it will come eventually. We wish you well. ANDREA OSBORN-Andrea or Ozzy has been at B.H. from the start, for thirteen long years. Ozzy rode to the position of grade 12 class president, where she demonstrated her determination in her efforts at collecting mufti money and organizing grade 12 skip out day. Andrea was an enthusiastic volleyball player but her bask- etball wasn't a total success as she was in a cast for the most of it. One of Ozzy's favorite pastimes was sipping cider through a straw. Good luck at the U. of M. next year and take care of the Green Machine. ANDREA MOSER-Andrea, commonly known to all of us as Moser came to our wonderful school only two years ago from Fort Frances. Elected as Head of Res, Moser could be seen in Exec. council saying Res is a part of the school Upon meeting someone new, her first question is always What kind of dog do you have? She left her mark on ski weekend and the Red Oak Inn will never forget her. Well Moser, whatever you de- cide to do next year, be it going to Switzerland. Germany or California, may you always have a smile pasted to your face. Luv and happy memories. She started the year off with a big bang, in her favorite class, chemistry. Cyndy could often be seen singing, dancing and thumping all over Res., and when not doing this, she could be found staring endless- ly at her favorite men in her room. This fact brings us to acknowl- edge her favorite saying Oh, look at him . As the basketball team's manager, she enjoyed filling and spilling the water bottles. How did you enjoy your three hour bath in Brandon, Cyndy? Any- way, best of luck in the future. Hope things go well for you al- ways. DENISE DOUCETTE-Denise has attended B.H. for two years and has been a part of Res. She could be seen by the phone saying Should I phone him? No, I shouldn't find him. Another one of her specialties is seeming to have an answer to everything. Two of her favorite classes were Mrs. Kaye's typing in grade II, and Math 200. Denise worked in the office this year and was a member of the art club. We will always remember her motherly character at her grade II wake-a-thon. In grade II she was the team manager for the basketball team and was a great help to them. Next year she plans to attend the U. of M. in the Fine Arts program. Good luck next year and we'll miss you. ALISON MCLEAN-Alison arrived at B.H. in grade nine and be- came our well known concert goer and side kick to Anna Dominique. She can name the members of most rock groups. Ali- son is quite talented in her classes when she's not yelling Boy do they ever give us a lot of homework . She's been in the choir, a member of the library committee and she is our sound technician for school plays. Never seen in a bad mood, Alison makes sure her shoulder is always there to lean on. She can not control one thing however, her screaming when P.K. is driving. Good luck in the fu- ture Alison. NANCY BROWN-Nancy, famous for her clean apartment, came new this year from a small town called Roseisle. She is great at basketball but her ankle still complains. Nancy has a habit of falling on Winnipeg streets, and so we draw the conclusion that she just can't get a firm hold on the ground or maybe she doesn't like to be that tall. Her famous saying is what is wrong with farmers? . Her marvelous lunches draw quite a bit of attention to her as they are always exactly the same thing day after day. Nan is a great kid with a smile always on her face. Best of luck with education, marriage, life and of course wealth. 94 KIM, IACQUELINE, MARY-LEA, LISA KIM FYLES-First let us tell you all of Kim's accomplishments and then next year we can continue this write up. Kim, our Head girl has been an outstanding member of our school for six years, part of the varsity volleyball team for three years and part of the varsity basketball team for four years. Last year she was our yearbook editor. She was voted by the 1982-83 St. Pauls graduating class as the girl with the best legsg Kim is not however a girl dedicated only to her school business. She can be seen with Iacqueline invading Grapes or the V, not to mention the wild Christmas parties. Kim is known for her motherly qualities and her American Band- stand Dance craze. Kim is a pudding pop and part one of the Charlies Angels Brigade. She loves to wear sexy bathing suits and vegging out to Micheal jackson. Be good next year Kimmy and have a mega time at the U. of M. l IACQUELINE ROSS-Let us introduce you to Miss Feta Cheese 1984. lake is our resident head of Craig Gowan, Number two of the Charlies Angels Brigade, and a faithful member of the pudding pops. Some of her most distinguishing characteristics are her lovely pigtails, her lips and the incredible amount of air she has in her lungs. Besides being the florist of the class I.R. also knows jello shakes when you eat it. She has been an important member of the varsity volleyball team for four years. After twelve years at B.H. we know you'll have a great time at the U. of M. next year and keep those lips puckered. MARY-LEA HORBAY-MaryLea has been a lively part of B.H. since grade three. Even though this year she was our school captain she will always be remembered for her annual hayrides, her obsession with Ralph Lauren and her expertise driving skills. She will always stay faithful to S.j.R. and remain an avid member of the pudding pop people. M.L. has kept us entertained with her camera, her morning hugs and her banana tricks. And last but definitely not least KENT. M.L. was a prominent member of the varsity volleyball team for two years and next year she plans to head off to Queens to study medicine and of course her specialty- guys. Good luck Chopper, we are going to miss you. LISA KING-The little jungle bunny house head of Glen Gairn has been a part of our big family since grade ten. Being the third part of the Charlie's Angels Brigade, many are under the impression that she is an angel. . .but we know that is not true. Mrs. Baillie has the right idea about Lisa and can always be heard saying Lisa King sometimes I'd just like to. . Lisa is president of the pudding pops people and is the local B.H. hostess of Backstage at Peppers, and the former hostess of the longest party the grade II class had ever seen. Lisa's friends would await her arrival at school each morning to see which underwear she chose to wear. In- famous for her driving two years without a license and hating English essays, Lisa holds the record for the fastest exam ever written. Lisa has played on the Varsity volleyball team for three years and will always re- member the practices lor will she?l. Good luck at the U. of M. next year and don't forget to brush your hair.
