' . 1 Headmastefs Message It always seems strange to write a message for our yearbook so early in the school year, but I've been asked and fully understand the constraints of going to press . This has been a very, very special year for me. Once in a career a Head of a school gets to be a chairman of such a prestigious group as the Canadian Association of In- dependent Schools. This has been my year. The Associations Annual Conference was held in Winnipeg in mid-October and was a resounding success. The letters of appre- ciation received following the Conference make my head swim and swell -mostly it swells with pride. In every case the Head of a visiting school made a complimentary comment on the spirit of Balmoral Hall and the warm, friendly atmosphere that abounds around and about our happy halls, Let me quote from one of the many letters. The atmosphere and spirit at Balmoral Hall is really infectious and although I was impressed with your plant, I do feel a good school should be judged by its spirit' and not its plant. I must now work to try and generate the same kind of atmosphere at my school, Congratulations! Those of us who are a part of the school can take credit for what people say and feel about us. The theme of this year-co-operation-is so apt, for this is what it is all about. The graduates will leave the comfortable, friendly family of B.H. for the competitive, aggressive world of university or college life. It is a dramatic, challenging and often frightening change. We hope that you will be a confident student and find the superi- or education you have received supportive in the days and years ahead. You leave a fine school for what we hope will be a future full of promise and success. We'll remember you: please remember us! N. Thomas Russell ... if ' 3 . ' 1 Q ,I , l Q, . 11. Headmaster's message . . . 2 Chairman of the Board J The graduating class of 1983 will be long remembered at Balmoral Hall. This class as a whole is geared to outstand- ing achievement. The dedication of the class members to intellectual excellence as well as concern for the school and their fel- low students have created a standard which future glraduating classes can look to as a goal to reach for and opefully equal. All members of the board join with me in wishing all our graduates the best for the future. We hope Balmoral Hall as provided each of you with the fortitude and character to meet the changes which will be unfolding in the world during the next two or three decades. To be able to meet new changing conditions, strong and flexible people must be willing to assume leadership roles in our society. We at Balmoral Hall are extremely proud of our institu- tion. We feel it is a place where each student is allowed to develop her maximum potential. With this training in place, we expect and hope each of you will tread a course during life wherein you will build on the foundations you acquired during you sojourn at Balmoral Hall. Iohn E. Senior School Staff Headgirl and School Captain Balmoral Hall is regarded by many as a meeting place, w ere we get togeth- er with friends, and enjoy a good talk, or a laugh or two. This 1982-83 year has been no different from the past, leaving us with memories and exper- iences we will never forget. fPanjamers1 After pulling off a successful dance, Spirit week, and Ski-Weekend lnot to mention a 4 month Sabbatical taken by Mr. Russell, we feel that we have learned, and grown from our exper- iences, and i it has not shown in school, socially we have found the key to success. INo more S.I.R. boys, it's UNIVERSITY men for usll This year seemed to have the most outstanding attendance records in both Student and Executive Council. We would like to thank all those who par- ticipated and helped make the year a rnuch better one. So now we will say goodbye, good- luck, and thank you or everyt ing, our memories will last for ever!! I never would have made it through had it not been for the trainin and confidence with which Balmoral Hall has provider? me. When I began to think about the dedication of this year book my first thought was to dedicate our 1983 year book to the student body, then I realized that it is the teaching staff who make the school what it is. The teachers help us set goals for our future, and give us the courage and confidence to fulfill these goals. I ask for your support in congratulating the teachers, because 'they make us what we are.' I would like to thank my staff advisors, Mrs. Sures and Mrs. Nickel for all their support. I would also like to give a special thanks to my year book staff-you know who you are! Thanks for being there when I needed your elp! What I'd like to do is thank not just the House Heads who did such a great job and were so cooperative: not just Miss Robertson who was the reatest hel that anyone could ever ask for, but I'd ike to thank everyone-not just a little thank you either, a big THANK YOU. Confinement by Alisha Ali The elevator doors closed with a loud, echoing bang and, as it descended, its passengers felt that usual, queasy feeling. The small compartment, heading down toward its underground destination, was filled with people concerned only with their own problems and the need to hurry. No one spoke. Suddenly the silence was broken by an electrical-sounding snap! The elevator stopped and the people within were filled with fear. They were stuck between floors, underground. Mr. Smith, the business-family man had a boss and a wife wondering where he was. Mrs. Simpson knew that there would be a boss waiting for a secretary who would arrive very late that day. Little Iimmy hoped that he had math first period in school and that he could live on five Three Muskateers bars. Panic replaced shock and the emergency button was pressed, but to no avail. Hours passed and the passengers grew tired of seeing the same faces through the dim darkness. The same four walls were seemingly closing in on them. The con- stant boredom, the fear, the shock, the panic, the monotony, it all seemed too much, but no one knew how long they would have to stand it . . . Many people, many families will be left wondering what has happened to these passengers, taking a elevator ride which lasted much longer than expected. This year she became a member of residence and turned into a swinging woman. Carolyn had a boarding house of her own and her generosity was never ending-her house, room, backgammon board, and even her brother. You could see her at every Ravenscourt dance. She was noted for her interest in reading Sher- lock Holmes novels. Weekends, Carolyn was a wonderful chauffeur lexcept for those in Handi Vansl and believed it was her green jeans which brought on this characteristic. Carolyn was a master of the chicken and was an active member of Braemer, leven though she couldn't spell itj, the yearbook, and broke the track record in javelin. Good luck next year at the U of M in education Carolyn. fdidn't you get enough of school?J Carol Premachuk Carol, an import from the Pas, materialized into residence in grade 7. A goal for Carol, through her six years, was to achieve adulthood which she finally accom lished just yester- day. fright Carol?J Carol remained bleached most of the time except for her annual trips to Florida. On the social scene, Carol bonded BH to its brotherschool. SIR, by roviding weekend holidays for everyone, twenty floors up! Carol was also a member of the presti- gious, elite Golden Spomers , a true priviledge in itself. Carol also developed an affinity or Greenjeans and could be seen sporting there on weekends or converting others to her habit. Though Carol led an active social life, she excelled as yearbook editor in 81-82, class president in grade 10, grade 8 Braemar Househead lonl because she liked the mascotll. Finally, Carol's greatest triumph was being Table Head this year,-oops, head girl 1982-83. Good luck at Western and watch out for Pygmies! Monica Barabonoff Monica descended on us from the big city of Flin Flon three years ago. In those years, she was head of Glen Gairn in grade 10 and 11 and this year became our lovely and loyal Sports Captain. When it came to Sports, Monica was always around. She participated in Figure Skating, track, basketball, etc. She did, however, detest volleyball and frisbee. Moni- ca is known for her many wierd characteristics such as her unforgetable laugh and also her snoring. She likes Champa ne and, for a while insisted on margarine for her vegetarian diet that no one seemed to lcnow about. As well, Barbie made a scene with the Canadian Gigolo. Monica was at all Ravenscourt dances even though she promised not to attend a single one. Monica was voted Prep of the year she also loved to try to set new trends. Next year she will enter into the Faculty of Physical Education. Make it burn . . . Barbie! Good Luck xxoo Grads . . . 90 Iackie, Siobhan, Sarah, Clarissa Iackie Cantin Iackie, a native of St. Pierre, defected from St. Mary's in grade 10. In the first year of boarding, jackie was an active telephone correspondent to someone whom we have not yet discovered! By grade 11, Iackie had embarked upon her first tropical cruise. Its highlights included a magician called Harry and Long Is- land Iced Tea 24 hours a day. A similar migration was to follow in the next school year. Its highlights were more Harry and more Iced Tea . Iackie was elected Head of Residence in grade twelve. This position entailed many responsibilities which Iackie tackled in a very able and competent manner. I'm sure the 'token frog mailman' of the 1983 residence year will be greatly missed. All the best in your future endeavours Iackie and perhaps we'll meet on a Carribean beach some day in the not too distant future! Siobhan McKee Siobhan, affectionately known as Doc , made her first appearance at BH in grade 7. After 6 years every- one has grown to love Siobhan's unique sense of humor and have learned to pronounce her name-with some unusual versions such as shiwan and shovan . Some even venture to risk their lives by visiting Siobhan and her killer dog MacTavish at home. Siobhan was 'smashing' as this year's Ballater Househead. In fact she's had quite an athletic career as a member of the Curling Team, as a Tennis buff lwhen she gets warmed up that isl and as a downhill skier lwith a wonderful relationship with treesl. Siobhan is considering her options for next year and will either study Engineering at Queens or Sciences at the U of W. All the best of luck to a wonderful friend. Sarah Hanks Sarah immigrated to Balmoral Hall in grade 7 from the booming prairie metropolis of Big Baldeer . She was soon to become a shareholder in the Impression's cafe lalias Lox 8: Bagelsl. Sit Sarah down with a cup of coffee and enter a philisophical world of antipubes, the joys of caffeine and prolonged assignments. Resi- dence food is another topic upon which Sarah often expounds. Its content and preparation are amoung the wonders of mankind! Although Sarah was a non-athletic member of the Ballater House, she became an im- portant component of the officiating and administrative aspects of the Intermural Program. Sarah's secret dream is to become a foreign correspondent. May your life be as exciting and turbulent as you have always made Mrs. Temple's! Good Luck, Comarade! Clarissa Ding Clarissa has been at BH for one year. She is a conscientious and hard-workingl Honour student, and she has a special interest in biology, especially in dissecting her rat, Muffy . lguess w at Mrs. Temple will think of that?1 Clarissa enjoys tennis, ping-pong, and swimming. Her vividness adds life to the residence this year. Clarissa plans to attend Queen's University for Science next year. So, best of luck in your future, Clarissa. Grads . . . Daunica, jennifer, Sand Daunica Martin Daunica joined our lucky BH family three years ago, full of smiles and tales of life in Saudi Ara- bia. Having spent much of her life in numerous exotic locations, you'd think the novelty of livin in Winnipe would have worn off! Her smile never dimmed lexcept perhaps once when caught wig a certain fluffly animal in her roomj, and her nervous giggle could always be heard ringing through the halls. Known for her Why do I run? , parties in residence, D.D. could be heard many Monday mornings groaning I'll never go to another party in my life! . Yet she persevered, and despite the disappearance of a prized and valuable item from her room, still managed to have a good time. As School Captain, Daunica was well-known for lengthy Student Council meetings, and faithful adherance to school rules. Havin spent last summer in France, she enriched our tiny French class with her broad knowledge of the qanguage ltoo bad she kept it all to herself!j We'll never forget that grad way back in grade 10, when she enjoyed the company of a certain well-suited date, and the neverending tales of her family, who she missed so much during her years in residence. We wish you luck and happiness in your future in Commerce-don't study too hard! jennifer Balon jennifer arrived at Balmoral Hall in grade 10 after failing to win the Nana Mouskouri lspelling?l look-alike contest. She soon became a prominent member of our class. Academi- cally speaking jennifer was an honor student. Athletically jen- nifer was an avid member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams. Our perfect prefect became head of Craig Cowan this year and did a Su- l per 6 job organizing various things. Being from the thriving metroplolis of Tilbury, Ontario, j.B. as been a resident student since grade 11. Her chipper attitude bubbles in the morning, while the rest of resi- dence drowns in their coffee. jennifer's good study habits as well as her drive to succeed should help her next year at Queen's in the faculty of Engi- neering. Good Luck! j Sandy Best Well Sandy, it looks as though you've finally made it through two and three-quarter years of hard struggle, and the time has finally come to graduate. In grade 11, Sandy became Head of the Graduation Committee, and her success at this posi- tion lasted right until the last day. Even when her date showed up with rather short hair, Sandy remained calm, and proceeded as planned. As a faithful member of the golden Teaspoon Club, more widely known as a Lox 8: Bagel groupee, Sandy soon learnt of the jo s of Grade 12 privileges, when she had them! Spares were a delight, es ecially when they were situated first thing in the morning, and although at one time Sandy had three mornings with a cfouble sleep in, I can't seem to remember why she'd always be at school. jMath and French perhaps?j But besides enjoying her spares, Sandy also found time to parricipate in such school activities as Political Science, Student Council, and of course, as lead- er of the loser house, S orts and Executive Council! She would attend meetings faithfully, first in fear of hurting some- one's feelings, and second, in fear of missing out on dessert after lunch. Sandy also found time in her busy schedule to take a vacation once a year, to a certain city called Thunderbay. I'm sure she had a great time skiing, but seemed to have a better time in the washrooms on the bus ride to and from Winni eg. Besides spending time with her friend at BH, Sandy developed a strong fondness for Mazda Trucks, and her friends, who at first felt deserted, realized that this truck came along with something that became a great part in her grade 12 year. We're gonna miss you B, so take care next year, and good luck at Queen's lin what ever you decide to doll! Hail McBail! Bye Buddy!! Anna has been an im ortant part of BH and we wish her allpthe best in the Future. Inf' Pam Steiman Pam has proven to be a 'petite' bundle of joy. When she first entered BH in grade 11, she was told she was the second prettiest girl in the classg everyone else was tied for first. lHa! Ha!J Serious- ly, Pam has beauty and a distinguished wit which kept us hopping. Her carefree nature made her easy to be around. Pam could often be seen in the common room trying to hang herselfg she has this attraction for the game hangman. Actually, Pam hung eve one else. This is especially true in Math, for which we are sure Pam will have fond memories, right Tanis? Well, Pam, this has to end sometime, Good Luck. We all hope youive enjoyled your 2 years at BH, may all your dreams come true . . . and Pam, don't change, you're perfect t e way you are! God Bless! Andrea Sible Andrea hails from Cayman, an island in the Caribbean Sea. This golden haired beauty added alot of color to our class. Being a talented Garfield artist, she left her little oran e mark every where she went. Andrea, also loves to eatg she brought delicious lookingsl lunches which also tasted deli- cious. Andrea shared everything, her lunch lfor which our stomac s thank youl, her smile and her sense of humor. Her humor was a little off beatg this made Andrea seem kind of strange at first, but when we got to know her, we found out she was crazier than the rest of us. She definitely has a rare talent for making people feel good and I'm sure none of us will for et her feven though some of us will tryl. We'll to try to put Andrea Sibley into words is impossible But the adjectives: lovable, beautiful 8: brainy, certainly suit her. Good Luck. Andrea, we ho e you enjoyed your last year at high school. Anyway you've made your classmates last year bri liter, to say the least. When you think of BH remember, we love, ACXDC loves you and you willg never be a hung woman . May all your aspirations come true. Grads . . . Ida, Iulia Ida Leug Ida has been at BH, for two years. She is always a quiet and studious person. This ac- counts for her ability to be one of the top ten percentage of all Canadian students in the Mathematics Contest Competition. On the other hand, she is also an active girl, for she par- ticipates in various kinds of extracuricular activities such as tennis, swimming, etc. She was a member of the school badminton team, school choir, and drama club lcan you believe that?1 Next year, she intends to study at University. Good Luck, Ida! We all wish you the best of luck in the future. Cod bless you! Iulia Kwok Iulia joined our BH in grade 11 from Hong Kong. Iulia was a rather quiet tat timesl and a conscientious Honour Student. She is always fleeing from a person known as Eye-O- Pussy lguess who???l She has The Brain to solve all the Physics problems. We really wonder where she obtained the Brain from. Nevertheless, Iulia will be joinning the Faculty of Engineering in Queen's University next year. She will be sadly missed by all, es- pecially, Eye-O-Pussy , who had given her quite a lot of unexpected experiences during her Grade 12 year. So lots of luck in your future, Iulia. Grads . . . 94 Aynsle , T annis, Louise Aynsley Hinchliffe Aynsley, uncommonly known as Hymie, descended upon BH in grade 6 and, a quick 6 years later rose to the position of grade 12 class president, where she demonstrated her determination in her efforts at money collection for bakesales and the like. She impressed us with her patience, which was a quality she may have developed against her will, to deal with this responsibility, and the little matter of a not so slow leak over her side of the bed on ski weekend. Speaking lwritingl of impressions, good old Hym does a wicked Richard The Third, which she first unveiled in English class, that led to an encore performance during spirit week. Nice pillow Ayns! Aynsley's dra- matic talents were further demonstrated when she managed to capture a piece of the sun and wore it proudly for all to see. Being amoung the more valued clientele of Lox and Bagel, Aynsley was noted for making time fly though occasionally had trouble reading her own watch correctly. Hopefully she'll get a Quartz for graduation or at least before she enters the St. Iohn's Associateship program at the U of M next year. If you heard her exclaim, after one of these unexplainable time lapses Hey, we're not late for French are we? you could be sure the answer was yes. With a certain tone of disbelief Aynsley was known at times to ask Why do I do this to myself? We all have these days marked on our calendars and known them as Essay Deadlines. Apart from times like that you kept on smiling and you know we luv ya Ayns! Tannis Leach Tornado Tan returned to BH as a boarder for her final year, after spending some time at SIR. In residence, she became famous for her frequent forced backgammon games. She was elected vice- president of the grade 12 class, and coordinated many class activities such as coffee breaks at the Impressions cafe. She was known for her incredible displays of athletics and, as a result, was voted least likely to make the 1984 Olympics. We all remember what a assive skier she was at Thunder Bay, that is, she went around jumps instead of over. lBut she diff jump a few beds with Sandy- sorry, Monical. But seriousl , Sunshine was a dedicated student, keeping her honour roll standin throlughout grade 12. She'll be taking Commerce next year at Queen's University. Keep up the goo wor , Tannis! Louise Osborn Louise otherwise known as Louse or Parry blew into Balmoral Hall at the tender age of two and has been entertaining the class ever since. From grade one to eleven Louise tried to trick the rest of us into believing that she was a well man- nered quiet young lady. HA! Personally she didn't fool me for a minuteg finally in grade 12 she decided to reveal the real Louse. We've never been the same since and neither has Mrs. Law. This year Louse was an enthusiastic member of Executive + Student Council and also served as our most revered Library Head. Louise took her responsibilities seriously but she never failed to add some glee to whatever activity in which she was engrossed. In fact, Louse's happy, shinning personality was almost never dimmed except perhaps for the occassional evening spent at Green Geans when the service was something less than desired? Next year's ski weekend will cer- tainly never be the same without Louse the Ski Bunny. Her talents for ending a run in the upper most branches of the highest Evergreen tree at Loch Lomand will never be surpassed. Heaven Forbid that she should actually attempt to ski on her skis! Never mind Louse we still love you. Louse will be entering the university of Manitoba in the new St. Iohn's Associateship Program we next year. An alternate plan could include a career as a television star at CKND or maybe as a used seat belt sales woman. Whatever you do Louse lLouise1 we know you will succeed. Good Luck and Best Wish- es! Grads . . . Alison, Lana, Karen Alison Sims Alison Mouse Sims, our woman of the world, came to us from Dallas, Texas lWow!l in grade eleven. She was from everywhere but nowhere, having seen almost every part of the world. From off of Southfork to our foy- er, Alison added kindness and enthusiasm to residence. One of her most rominent charac- teristics was her late arrival? back from holi- days, where she s ent all of her time with Kenny-Poo ! She lleld good standing on the Honour Roll, despite her procrastinatin study habits. Those habits often led to the wgld and crazy 3 am. Backgammon Tournaments. Ali-1 son has plans to carry on her education in Ontario. Her goal in life is to become a veternarian fan have her own horsel!! We love you! Take care! Best of luck in the future! All you need to do is smile! Lana Holtby Lana Banana Holtby became an Honourable Member of the BH family in Grade Ten, coming from Benito, Manitoba. She appeared to be shy, but to those of us who knew her, she was kind, friendly and great fun. She spent Grades 10 and 11 in residence, haunting the halls with her white right mask. In Grade 11, Lana was the res. girl with the most members of her family in town for a weeknight! But in Grade 12, Lana escaped to the paradise of her own apartment. She was the wonderful skip of the senior curling team in Grade 11 and 12, placing second in the Zone 12 playdowns in 1982-83. fWe won't mention that these were only 3 teams!1 We will really miss your radiant smile in our halls, Lana, Best of Luck in the future. We love you! Karen Speakman Karen, talkalot came to BH in grade 11 from Lynn Lake, Man. When Karen first arrived at BH, she was shy and wary of the big city . However, over grade 11, with the help of her crazy and lovable roomate Corrie, Karen became outgoing, friendly and just a lil' crazy. Although in class Karen is often heard sayin I don't think this is right but . . . Karen rose to the top of the class where she stayetf all of her six terms at BH. Karen curled, managed the varsity volleyball team, placed third in the Zone 12 badminton singles tournament, and was the ead of Braemar house for the 82-83' school year. In residence, we knew Karen as the last to leave the dining room, although she has to run around in the shower to get wet! Next year, Karen will enter the sciences at Mount Allison University, and hopes to o on to become a ediatrician. We love you and we will miss you Karen, and hope that life brings to you onlly the best. Grads . . . 96 I l Closing Exercises vtfliyff Closing Exercises . . . 98 Valedictor 5 .
