R3C 3S1 Title Page 1 gg !7 Welcome to Balmoral Hall Where we work together . . . Have fun together . . . and . rl lfl. We get by with a little help from our friends! Another school year started with our largest enrolement ever. Our school is growing along with the good times, and memories we have. i Editor's Message A dedication is usually reserved to honor one special per- son, but all of you make Balmoral Hall special and there- fore, I dedicate this collection of memories to each and ev- ery one of you. With great hesitation I entered the world of a yearbook editor. Optima Anni 81-82 grew from an impossible dream to the pages of reality that you now hold in your hands. To the graduating class, no one can stop you now , I wish health, happiness and prosperity in whatever you do. I want to thank my dedicated staff. May you never for- get the yearbook week-ends, my jokes, lspare me!!l the hard work and good times. A special thanks to my advisors Mrs. Nickel and Mrs. Sures, who put up with me and my spelling. And to all the others who helped me through this year, Thank You, I never could have done it alone. Carol Premachuk Yearbook Editor. P.S. Friends, sorry for time lost, here's to next year!! .4495 S, .A X Ai Editors Messige Headmaster's Message Mr. N. Thomas Russell our headmaster. Mr. Russell and Mr. Carstairs converse in the new library. Heaclmastefs Message 4 This year enrollment in the school is at it's highest level ever. More and more parents are looking to Balmoral Hall for exciting and challenging pro- grammes designed to provide each student the op- portunity to develop academically, personally and socially. In a sense, we have arrived at the crossroads . Do we expand and take in more students, or do we consolidate and embellish what we already have? It is one of the nicest problems I have ever had to face. I consider myself fortunate in having interested and concerned parents, teachers and Board mem- bers, all of whom are as anxious as I am that the school shall continue to flourish. It will, I can assure you! When you read this, the 1981!82 School Year will be behind us and some of you will have left Bal- moral Hall behind as Well. I wish you a happy and successful future. Remem- ber us . . . we will remember you! N. Thomas Russell, Headmaster. ls.. ,vs gl f if ',?f:73ff tjfk f, fffffri ' I' fy r 4 ' -' ,, 4 ':f 'Y- iiiif ' Jtjflfli .w'5, ' 3- .j,..... af . We also had fantastic locations: Town Square, Lombard Place and the Health Sciences Centre. The B.H. shiners raised 31375.00 this year, compared to 5875.00 last year. We also moved from 12th place to 7th place. All in all, it was a very rewarding feel- ing to know we had contributed to such a worthy cause: Cystic Fibrosis. Exciting Activities such as a costume parade, a pumpkin carving contest and the haunt- ed house went on that day. Connie Rigert. Headgirl: Susan Riley, School Captain. Traditionally these comments are designed to reflect on the year's events, but because of the special feeling we hold for the school we are re- serving this space to highlight the significance of what this past school year has meant to us. We must reflect our school motto: Meliroa Petens , which means seeking better things and link it to the innumerable ways in we at Balmoral Hall have been taught to accept the best of our- selves and to achieve better things. It has been here, where teachers and students led by Mr. Russell, have come together to form a meaningful bond of participation, co-operation and support giv- ing to each of us a chance for a truly unlimited fu- ture. Ours is an ideal school, and one which permits ev- ery girl to be an individual and at the same time to feel part of our large family. Connie and I have enjoyed being a part of Balmoral Hall where all our en- deavors were undertaken with everyone's best interests at heart. Looking back on grade two is think- ing of Mrs. Kay saying line up girls, ten times. She must be tired of doing it. Imagine, doing it all year round. lSigh!1 Oh, someone is at the door! It's Mrs. Kay! She reminds me of grade two the most. Hello Mrs. Kay! I was just thinking about you and grade two. Let's talk about what we did. We went to the planetarium and me and Beth went in your car. It was a lot of fun. Remember that time we went to the bee farm? We tasted honey, and got to see the bees. We saw Mr. Hanson take the wax off the cells to get the pollen to make honey. We also went to Oak Hammock Marsh. That was fun!!! We did so many things, it is hard to remember. We went to our walk down Broadway, and on our walk the sun was shining. Grade two was fun!!! Dana McGillivray Grade 2 Endangered Species In the Arctic cold and the forest green, There are many animals you have seen. There's the polar bear and the wise old fox: There are splendid wildcats and hawks. But you can't often see these round about, 'cause all of them are dying out. To stop them from going one by one, We shouldn't kill them just for fun, Or poison them, or burn their home, Or take away the place they roam. Don't lock them up with a shiny key. lust let them be wild, alive and free. Endless, Forever Photographed emotions hidden in 'till eternity ends Shadows of our minds My best friends- Some emerge, only to be stored away But not me For infinity, or a rainy day. Everyone but me. People change physically, mentally, intellectually all the while. The most noticeable change takes place within the age group of sixteen to twenty-one. Within those sixty months, people may change significantly, though in some respects, they remain stagnant. Physically, this is the period when adolescence turns to maturity. Boys and girls whose ages lie within this age range always find their limbs stretched, their figures seem to be pulled longer and longer everyday. Finally, there comes a day when those cute, ingenuous, little boys or girls will resemble their fathers or mothers in ev- ery aspect. As time goes by, people are exposed to hard facts of life. The original innocent, little mind will be braided with experience and knowledge. Teenagers reaching this stage usually find themselves reckless with new ideas. New sets of values may be acquired, enabling them to view things in different perspectives. People find themselves more mature as they begin to threat things with prudence. They begin to act more like adults, accepting responsibility dutifully. In spite of these great many mutations, people still retain some distinct features of their own. Occasionally, there may be makeup or beards hung on their faces, wrinkles on their foreheadsg their hairstyles may be dif- ferent, yet their original countenances still persist. A person always looks like his own self whether he is at the age of 5 or 65. Nevertheless, the character of a person seldom change. A stubborn person always holds on to his own version tenaciously, no matter what age he is. Thus, a stoic always shows temperanceg a frivolous person seldom reveals sobriety. People may change drastically and significantly within five years, yet they always remain unchanged in some respects. Your always teasing, Never thanking, You make me so mad!!! I know I could be learning, But is my spelling REALLY that bad? I stood and looked out my window, And I watched the sun begin to rise, I thought of long past memories Then the sun did touch the sky. I stood and looked for the longest time, My thoughts now filling the room. I remember walking the beach with you Then the sun became the moon. I stood and looked out my window and quietly began to And quietly began to cry. I had remembered so much this time As I had watched the day go by. Whenever she has any leisure time, she will spend it with Ben. Don't misunderstand me! Ben is not her boyfriend, it is her beloved horse which was given to her on her 17th birth- day by her parents. Helen is always in a helpful mood. She is planning to go into Computer Science in the University of Winnipeg next year. Work Hard, Helen! We're sure that you will turn out to be another excellent programmer. With this opportunity, we would like to wish you all the best in the future! Anita was a new addition to our B.I-I. family this year. When in her uniform, she appeared quiet and studious, but was this really the case? i Anita was well known for her ability to eat a huge quantity without gaining a single ounce. When it came time to study, she was always quiet. fquietly sleepingl Despite this fact, Anita was acknowledged for her uncanny powers in the Arts. Next year, Anita will be attending the Faculty of Arts at Queen's University. She will be sadly missed by all. Good luck now and in the future, Anita! e l With just one glance at Nancy, you may not have the slightest idea that she is a member of the Senior school, let alone a graduate student at Balmoral. Nevertheless, Nancy is a straight A student. Her academic stan- dard has been consistently good throughout her two years in Canada. Nancy was also known as the Pink Lady . lust open her closet, and your eyes will be immediately assaulted by the full colour spectrum of pink. Nancy is planning to join the family of Queen's next year. Let's give her the warmest regards, and wish her every success in the future. Mary has been at Balmoral for two years. She was usually very quiet, and could often be found with a box of smarties or a bowl of popcorn in front of her. She plans to work out west for a year and then back to Thunder Bay, her home , to take Retail Management. ' Mqidzkwhssiwilstfxi- X Hanadie, Cher ne, Elena, Al son Hanadie came to us this year from Saudi Arabia. Her 'chic' appearance left a touch of class among the BH hallways. lt's been rumored that if she took off all her jewellery she'd lose five pounds. Hanadie was an Honour Student at Christmas. She was solely responsible for finding a sure-fire way to attract those Canadian boys-wear a neck brace and have them ask What did you do to your neck? Hanadie was also known as one of the Siamese twins, never to be found without Cheryne by her side. Hanadie's future plans include studying at the University of Winnipeg, and graduating with a medical degree so she can practice as a plastic surgeon. Best of all in the future. We'll miss you. Cheryne Chebib joined our residence and grade 12 class in September from Saudi Arabia. She brought with her her language lwhich was of help to the French 300 class and allowed her to win the French verse compe- titionl, her laughter and her love of animals lIt's even been suggested she loves them more than peoplelj. Cheryne hopes to make her love of animals her career by becoming a veterinarian. In the fall she will attend the University of Manitoba for Sciences. We'll always remember you, Cheryne. Bonne Chance next year and forever! Elena joined our BH family this year. She added a touch of Mexican culture to the already international resi- dence. Keeping an apparantly shy and demure appearance within the BH boundaries, once let out on SIR soils, she revealed her true identity. Elena surprised us all by getting a Diploma after taking only four courses lWhat did you do during all those spares?l We will always remember the beautiful quilts she made during the year. Elena's future plans are to go back to Mexico and further her studies in Mexico City. After countless in- vitations, we all know there will always be an open door waiting for us in Mexico. Buena suerte! Alyson joined our BH family way back in grade four. During her years here, Alyson has been involved in volleyball, basketball, and yearbook. During her last year here she was very much celebrated for chocolate chip cookies. She almost never burned them. However, Alyson was best of all known for her hysterical and contagious laughter. Her warm and friendly smile will be very much missed around the halls of BH. After graduation, she plans to attend either the University of Winnipeg or Manitoba and study Sciences. Whatever your choice, Alyson, we all wish you the best of luck, happiness, and success in your future. We'll miss ya! Trac , Connie, jennie, jane, Shideh Tracy Kitchin graced our BH halls for two years. She is one of our many prized students and at- tained an average, both years, of Honour Roll standing. Tracy was also an avid Braemar support- er, and was involved in several school activities such as Reach For The Top , Model Parliament, Student Council, and Yearbook. Tracy intends to pursue a career in the field of veterinary science. Good luck, and all the best to you. Our 1981-82 Head Girl, Connie, joined the resi- dence crew in grade 9. Since then she has been an active member of school life. Connie was head of the grad committee in grade eleven. Residence life just won't be the same without you! One of Connie's greatest assets is her belief in helping others, and she sure proved that to all of us. Connie will attend the University of Manitoba, where she plans to study to become a social work- er. Good luck, Connie! --dn? jennie Ewing came to us this year all the way from Dallas, Texas. Known for her sunny smile and a How y'all doin' jennie's favourite topic of conversation was a certain mysterious young man named Bill. No one counted calories better than jennie, but she went a little bit too far when her skin started to turn yellow after eating so many carrots. jennie plans to go to England to study Nursing, at which she is certain to be a great success. Good luck, Iennie, and don't forget to keep in touch. jane joined BH in grade 11 from Swan River. jane has been an avid curler, and last year on ski-weekend you could hear jane yelling Stop the Machine from all over the mountain. In Residence, she was known for her ice-cream and donut raids. During her spares Mini could be found in her room asleep with her ghetto- blaster. Next year jane plans to take Commerce at the University of Manitoba. We wish you the best of luck in the future, jane. Shideh came to us 3 years ago from Iran, bringing with her a sweet, kind-hearted personality. Residence just wouldn't have been the same without Shideh. Sometimes she was quiet and sometimes . . . well, there are just no words to describe her. Through Shideh's eagerness and enthusiasm, her accomplishments at BH were abundant. Shideh successfully ran our Library as Library Prefect. Next year she plans to attend the University of Manitoba or Queens to study pre-dentistry. We all wish her the best of luck! She always said that people should have enough sleep before doing anything. Elisa was an excellent student, and was a concientious per- son when it came to solving problems. In the future she plans on continuing her studies in science at University. Maybe one day you'll read a book written by Elisa! Being one of the smartest students in the scientific field, Iacqueline is well-known for her hard work. When- ever she encountered a problem in her studies, she fought against it and usually came out victorious. This success was mainly due to her organization. Besides being an Honour student, Iacqueline is also a photogra- pher. Her contributions to the yearbook were much appreciated. Furthermore, Iacqueline was an excellent ta- ble-tennis player. Good luck, Iacqueline! We all wish you the best of luck in the future. God bless you! Louise has been at B.H. for one year, but never stopped displaying her school spirit. She could always be counted on to lift spirits in Residence, where she was known as Weezy . Louise was a hard-working, concientious Honour student. She enjoyed tennis, and often skipped lunch to play. You sure got tired of George fast, even if he was a rat . . .! Louise plans to .4 attend University next year to study business. Best of luck in your future endeavors. Donna has been a member of our BH family since grade 7. Donna excelled both in her studies and at sports-being an Honour student since seventh grade, and by playing on the Volleyball and Basketball teams. Her future plans are to attend the University of Brandon, where she'll major in Zoology. She hopes to graduate with a degree in Oceanography. We know you can do it Donna. Good luck. She has been involved in newspaper, political science, choir, and yearbook. She was also very active in the sports program at the school. Andrea was a very promi- nent member of the volleyball team, es- pecially this year as she was the captain of the varsity team. This past year she was the Craig Gowan househead and did a great job. Andrea will be remembered for her neat lockers, and her problems with her contact lenses. Our little angel in green will also be remembered for her contagious laughing fits, and her bandanas in assembly. An- drea plans to attend the University of Manitoba, to study Commerce. We wish you the best of luck. Ayne became a member of the Bal- moral Hall family in grade five, and this year showed everybody what a fantastic person she was in her role as Sports Captain. She has been on the Honour Role since grade seven. Anne has earned many awards over the years, not only for herself, but for the school. She has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and track teams, as well as being on the yearbook and grad committees, choir and Student Council. She is plan- ning a career in Physical Education with the goal of becoming a Physiotherapist. Good luck in the future. We know you'll do well! Gill is a member of the Lifetime Association of the Balmoral Hall Family. She was a very enthusiastic and energetic House Head of Braemar this year. When Gill was at school, she actively took part in many aspects of school life: basketball, volleyball, track, badminton, choir, Student Council, Political Science, and ski week- ends. Of course, we can't forget the efficient job Gill did as the 1981 Yearbook Editor. But in all seriousness, Gill has added a lot of life to the 1982 class and is a great person. She will long be remembered for her numerous but short-lived diets, and her successes as a chemist. Gill plans on moving her bundle of spirits to the University of Manitoba, to enter into the faculty of Business Administration. Good luck, Gill, we're behind you all the way. Luv ya! Anne Marie Doll is known for her early morning smiles, black shoes and funny running style. She has spent two years at B.H. Grade 9 and after a few years in Calgary she returned to us for her final year. Anne Marie was a very talented musician and we wish her the best of luck next year at the University of Calgary in Commerce. ' ' A-iwrmia vs .1 L nn, joni, Lynn was a welcome addition to our BH family in Grade 9. Once a boarder in Grade 6, Lynn got her first taste of Residence life. She became Head of Residence in Grade 12. This prestigious title didn't come easily to Lynn. She first had to suffer innumerable times at the hands of her practical joking roommates IRemember your red and pink toenails, and the 'hair tied to the bedpost trick?l. In Lynn's day there were 30 hours. She spent from four to six playing mother hen, and after supper could either be found scurrying off to Eatons' or junior Achievement. By 9:30, Lynn was back in her room, frantically trying to get her homework done. Lynn sure knew how to enjoy life! After all, she was from The Pas! Lynn plans on entering the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Manitoba next year. Good luck, Lynn! We'll miss you!! The hallowed halls of BH haven't been the same since Carol Seaton joined us from Pickle Carol, Allison Lake four years ago. She was a happily established Residence kid, but later enjoyed her own where she co-ordinated weekend parties for the BH party scene. Two of her most notable traits were passion for purple and her obsession with vitamins. Carol also amazed us all with her love of music and writing abilities. Especially the way she'd write a 20 pg. essay the night before it was due and still get 'A'. All in all, Carol is going to be sadly missed at BH. Take care, Carol, and good luck at the University Manitoba, as you work towards a degree in psychology. Allison graced our halls with her presence 3 years ago, in Grade 10. In grade 12, Allison quickly becan Balmoral As president of our class this year Allison added a great deal of excitement to our homeroo known as Typhoid Mary . Despite her new illness every second week, she managed to survive her years . , I periods by succeeding in draining all the Grade 12's of their finances. Allison spent V2 of her time in t computer room, trying to become a computer genius. Allison is planning on attending the University of Mar toba to take Computer Science. Undoubtedly she will be a great success. Best of luck in the future' joni Pollock is a life time B.H.'er, yes, a whole 12 years. It marks the end of 12 years of study and the beginning of a new life in whatever one choses. But, that is not today's only signifi- cance. Today will be the last time we assemble together as a student body at Balmoral Hall. Many of us will never see each other again, but we will always remember the fun and happy times we shared together. It is hard for us to leave Balmoral Hall, because it has become, in essence, so much a part of us. Our only hope is that we are leaving behind some small contribution in return for the many things this school has given us. It has given us experience in life, friendships and memories we will always cherish. Our teachers and parents have played an important role in pre- paring us for this forever-changing world. To them, we extend our most heartfelt thanks in the hope that in the future we will make them even more proud of us. We have learned to care. To care about other people and to care about ourselves and our futures. Goodbye is never an easy thing to say, especially when saying it to friends and to a place which has been so much a part of us. Someone once said that Goodbye is forever, so to you all, I say so-long and thank-you. Valedictory 101 ' K M 76'-'I'-41-Lv.:-1-gs: iefn . Garden Party 43: 5?
