BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL 630 Westminster Avenue Winnipeg, Manitoba GD111' ifuzah era ,, ,.,,.....J-. The Leaders of 1980-1981 would like to wish you all the very best in the future. Love ya all. ,. , Q 1 bv -1:1 E-Irztthmttiatierh illlemaage Last year we suffered the agonies of develoment and changeg this year we reap the benefits. In some ways the 1980! 81' school year heralds a new chapter in the illustrious history of our school. The students who currently attend the school are the rich benefactors of years of planning, discussion and decision, which culminated in the construction of the 'new look' Balmoral Hall. For all of us the development has proven to be something special and has given the school a tremendous 'uplift'. How lucky we are! As well as physical change, this school year we have seen other changes which really indicate our strong position as one of the leading independant schools in Canada - a school exclusively for girls. Enrollment has reached an all-time high. In grades 6, 7 and 8 we have two classes, and our Nursery class has reopened. I cannot remember a year when the enthusiasm and excitement on opening day was so obvious. This high has continued throughout the year, resulting in im- pressive standards of achievement in every facet of school life and thus the chapter must record positive things. As the Chairman of the Board put it one day Things are going so well it scares me! I don't think I shall ever forget the visit of the two fine young men each with an obvious disability. They were an inspiration to us all. I shall always remember Mrs. Honey's expression when I asked her to arrange for some coffee and cookies to be served in my office after they had toured the school. However will the young man without arms cope? she exclaimed. Let me tell you he coped all right and was very confident in removing his shoe and sock and handled cup, saucer and cookie without spilling a drop or dropping a crumb. However, I think something rubbed off on us all and none of us should feel sorry for ourselves again. For me it was a highlight of tremendous significance in the Year of the Disabled . I truly believe the school's future is bright and we have a great deal for which to be thankful. To the graduates I express my sincere best wishes for the future. I urge you to establish some personal goals , set your mind to what you want to do and keep on track. God bless you all! N.T. Russell Headmaster. Enarh nf CEnuernnrz 4' , 7- - ,L It is a distinct pleasure to visit the school and see the new facilities being used so well. The library, multi-purpose room, extra classrooms and general office area have become a part of the whole - a complex of which we can be truly proud. This year we have new people on our Board of Governors. New faces: new ideas and new thoughts for the future. This year I shall end my term as Chairman of the Board. It has been a privilege to serve as the titular head of a growing, vibrant institution and I can look back with tremendous satisfaction on what has been accomplished over the last few years. Those of you who graduate this year have also accomplished a great deal. Hold your heads high as you start a new chapter in your life and may all your future dreams come true. Good luck, John D. Please bear with me, as this is the first time I have ever done anything like this. However, the important thing for anyone is that one must try in order to succeed in one's chosen career. If a career isn't for you, then whether you settle down and raise a family, or get a job, you need determination. After all is said and done, a girl must like what she is doing to be happy. Enough of this. I think I'm supposed to be dedicating this Yearbook to someone or some obscure idea. Families are so important in life! They give you love, they allow you to express your opinions in moments of debate, and above all they give you the discipline you need to fulfill your expectations. Our Balmoral Hall Family, led by Mr. Russell, our B.H. Dad, gives us the basis for our future struggle to the top. So as editor of this Optima Anni edition, I would like to dedicate this year's book of memories to the future. May all of you someday make it to the top. Thank you, Optima Anni staff for putting up with my last minute struggle to meet all those deadlines, which would hardly have been possible without your help. Many thanks to Mrs. Nickel, our adviser this year, who gave us her confidence and support. Without it, I probably never would have made it to the end. I think I'll end this while I can. I definitely don't want to keep you from any surprises you may discover. So - read on! Good luck in the future. See you all at the top! Instant recovery led us into Shinerama, which brought in over eight hundred dollars for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Ha1lowe'en was a horrifying ex- perience with student council's annual haunted house. We have never seen so many witches, ghosts, and goblins at one time! The Pumps dance was an incredible success, and there are still puckered lips from the lemon eating contest. Overall the year was a success, especially with the Grade 12's organization of the Friday noon hour ac- tivities, annual skip out, and end of term class parties. We wish you all the best in the the years to come. We miss you! Sue and Debbi Headgirl and School Captain. Zfixerutiue Qlnunril gli? 1. .. Thanks to our head referee, Mrs. Harper, who kept the game under control, the coaches who headed each house, with leadership and finally you, the spirited players whose enthusiasm and co-operation made for a more exciting game. The first period was filled with many interesting activities. We started it off with bump, setting, and spiking, followed by a successful Swim Meet. An interhouse ping-pong tourney contributed to our lead after the-first period. To start off the second period, activities such as floorhockey, basketball, and badminton were played. Our annual Ski Day, studentfteachers games, and noon hour programs put our team even further ahead. The third and final period consisted of our annual track meet fwhen it's not cancelledl, our interhouse tour- nament, and softball. Thus the end of the third period marked the end of the game and a victory for our team. Well, I appreciate your turning out, and before signing off l'd like to congratulate the winners, you the students. I hope the next year Steam' has just as good a game'l. Your spirits were incredible, and your enthusiasm showed itself with first class achievements in such sports as volleyball, the swim meet and track. I would like to thank my assistant house-heads, Patti Coughlin, Anna-Lisa Cohen, Margo Leach, and Amy Coughlin, for all their help with the organization of the intramural program. I would also like to give everyone else a huge hug, because I will certainly miss you. Best of luck Ballater!!! Love Barb Eraemar -.-va. 222 Dear fellow Braemar's, Is this year really over already? It's pretty hard to believe. Well, we got through it all, guys, and we sure had fun doing it! Remember: the swim meet, when our swim team somehow forgot to get in the water?!! The track meet where we did so well? Basketball, that we were supposed to win? When Bernadette got sick ? These are all things that will stick in our memories for a long time to come. We have learnt from these experiences a lot about things like cooperation, sportmanship and enthusiasm - in which you all excel. Winning in my eyes is having gained something worthwhile and lasting from an experience - and the fun and friendship we've had together is definitely something to remember. I would like to add special thanks to my junior househeads: Jackie, Daunica, Deidre, and Kim. You did a great job! Thanks for everything!! Love always! Maureen Qlraig Maman Fellow Craig Gowanites, Well, another year has come to an end and once again, Craig Gowan has proved to everyone, what super spirit and talent it has! Many of our victories were the result of this spirit and enthusiasm. I would like to express my appreciation to our junior school rep's Debbie Odiambo and Linda Graham, and to our 7 and 8 rep's Cari Gray and Geills Andison. I would also like to thank our 9 and 10 rep Aynsley Hinchliffe. Finally, I would like to thank everyone in Craig Gowan for making my last year at Balmoral Hall the best it could possibly be! The sunlight slowly filters through the branches. Suddenly I feel a raindrop, and another one. I realize I have stopped pedalling and start furiously. Kim's carg what was it? always managed to get attacked by garbage trucks but, it was her best friend when it came to a place to go when she didnlt go to Chem., to avoid being told to leave. Shmablitt was infamous for her lack of green socks especially on Day 4. No f doubt they were probably buried deep inside one of her ripped shopping bags! Kim has enough ambition to move a mountain - at least she's been trying to move Banff to Winnipeg for the past three years! Her experience gained as an insomniac at B.H., especially the night before a History essay was due, will no doubt help her at Carleton next year, where she intends to study Journalism. Good Luck! M-fm' Sarah Brown Having been born and raised in Winnipeg ibut don't spread it aroundjl She has continued to dazzle us with en- chanting tales from Toronto, N.Y., London and other swinging cities. It will be a sad moment when we lose this wonderful P.R. agent. A veteran B.H.'er, she has graced our halls for nine years and is now giving that all up for the University of Trent where she plans to study the Arts. I-Ier abhorrence of gymnastics, doing the gates , and other physical strains were more than made up for in her dramatic conquests. She tackled various characters which ranged from posh-old-snobs, to a clumsy but lovable schoolgirl in our past few high school productions. Family. For the past two years Cory has been involved with Gymnastics and this year was the coach. At 1:10 Cory is often seen racing back from Gramma Lee's with C.B., B.R., J.K., and H.H., trying not to be late for Mrs. Friesen's math class. During the course of the year, at times when we had the blues, one can always rely on Cory for a smile or a shoulder to cry on. After graduation Cory plans to become a registered nurse under the Health Science Centre's program. Good Luck Cory and all the power to you. Cynthia Burrows Cynthia has been with the B.H. Family since grade 7. Always a firm believer in silence is golden Cynthia used to hide from people she didn't know. However, when the braces and glasses disappeared this year, C.B. shed her shyness and now we can't keep her quiet, let alone get her to hide. The grade 12's will always appreciate her taxi service. C.B. will always remember Ski-Weekend and Capt, Huff-Huff' or maybe she'd like to forget!?! Cynthia dabbled in a bit of everything never concentrating all of her friendliness and zany humour to one group of people or one specific activity. She decided Cwith good reasonl that Art was her forte - not French and created a beautiful sculpture - What are you going to do with it, Cynthia? Cynthia will be continuing on to the U. of M. next year where she'll eventually prove her talents in Fine Arts. Good Luck C.B. and I hope to see your works up there with Picasso and Rembrandt someday! Tabitha Chow Tabitha joined our Family in September of this past year. She was always very quiet, and it wasn't until December that we knew she spoke, never mind English. The only reason we knew she could talk was due to the number of times Mrs. Sures ordered her to ask her Math questions in English. Tabitha could always be found giggling because everyone had the irresistible urge to tickle her. Next year Tabitha plans to take Agriculture, yet where is another question. Wherever you do end up, we wish you the best of luck in the future! Allgmm, Suzan, Qlnili, Allyson Downs I think the word that best describes Allyson is Spunky or maybe energetic , Possibly just plain old spinny . This bundle of energy breezed into BH four years ago and immediately took command. Sports are Al's high point and she definitely proved it with her ex- cellence at almost everything: basketball, tennis, curling, track, baseball, skiing, badminton and the list goes on. Her first love was volleyball, however, and she was captain of the varsity team. Remember: the way she loved S.J.R. dances? aced a Chem test ? passed a -1 Physics test '? missed B.I.D. ? lived in her sweats ? A lot of us owe our lives to Al for fixing us up with grad dates as her relations with a certain boy's school were excellent - at least to the end of the year. Allyson will be taking off to France next fall, to learn French and take a few university courses. Bonne chance, vielle! Susan Graham Sue joined the B.H. Susan has devoted a lot of time to Balmoral Hall and has made a success of everything she has attempted. Lately, Sue has been known as our hop-a-long friend . Keep on smiling Sue G. and best of luck with your future! Judi Green Judi has been a member of the B.H. salt mines for three years. As a residence dweller, she helped keep the place under control. Judi's talents in music, art, and poetry added a touch of culture to our hallowed halls and she was full of surprises especially in Biology class. Schmude hails from Northern Ontario, the land of lakes and forests and so naturally, she is going to pursue a career in forestry. Heather has been a very willing and able member of Craig Gowan. She will always be remembered for her impeccably neat and tidy appearance and her motherly nature! It was always anything for a joke on Heather but that's because she's ix V , so good natured. Toby's also a generous X va , classmate, especially with history and biology notes - she probably spent more time looking for them than writing them. I wonder if she will forgive us for making her skip-out-or- will we forgive her for all the candid shots she took in grade ll!?! This year Heather's hard work and diligent effort paid off and her name appeared on the Honour Roll. Next year she is heading for the University of Manitoba to study education with hopes of going on to special education for exceptional students. Best of luck in the future Toby and may someone, someday spell your last name correctly! Indira Guha Indira has been a part of the B.H. crowd for six years. Ariel Gurvey Ariel has been a member of our B.H. Family for two years. As a member of Craig Gowan, the basketball team, and the track team, Ariel has been very active in sports. She's been an avid participant and organizer of the Reach for the Top team at B.H. She also participated in Model Parliament, and next year she hopes to work as a page in the House of Commons. With these many achievements, Ariel still managed to maintain a high academic level. She plans to attend Carleton University next year to take first year science. At house games, she was often accompanied by her skinny green companion. As a new hobby, Barb decided to visit exciting places: Whistler - Italy - Montrose Cetc.J and we haven't seen much of her since! Barb also likes wasting her time in Squire's, even though it is so goobie . Despite her frequent ab- sences , Brainy Barb has managed to maintain the honour roll since grade 7. Her satirical wit has made many a boring class and many a boring night in Res en- tertaining, CChi-boomll This gift for sarcasm should also aid her in future law career. In the fall, the halls of Queen's University will be honored with Marie's presence, Good Luck Queen's, oh and of course all the best to Marie in her future endeavors. if 'knu- Marion Morberg The high school years have finally come to an end and they have been very busy years indeed for Marion. She has endured the trauma of Residence life at Bl-I for three years, as Head of Residence last year and as senior class president this year. Her imaginative ideas and clever pranks made Student Council and boarding life a lot more fun. Although tennis was not really Mjorn Morg's forte, she was an enthusiastic participant in sports for Ballater and for the school track team. Who could forget the long nights with Marion on the ski trip? Or the day she broke the class money jar all over the hall? One never knew what to expect around Marion. She took self-improvement courses this year, for obvious reasons tjust kidding Marlj and visited a certain Ron quite often. Our Swedish lass hails from Lynn Lake in Northern Manitoba. CD0 you have trees there?J. Marion plans on attending the University of Manitoba next fall to study Arts, and we're sure she'll make a success of it. Remember, Marion, those who never risk going too far will never know just how far they can go! Good luck, and don't forget your friends from Balmoral Hall. Svnpliie, Eehhi, Svlpzlleg, Debbi Morrison After making her first appearance at , B.H. in grades 2, 3, and 4, Debbi left, only x to return and take the school by storm in grades ll and 12. As our school captain this year, she tackled each challenge with vigour and enthusiasm. She also managed to make Student Council meetings the shortest this school has known QA lunch hour is too valuable to be sparedll Deb had three homes this year: school, Squires, and the Centennial Library. Her house on F' .. . f if Lamont? Well her mother recalled seeing Jibfh her a couple of times during the year. Debbi was our resident politician. This was made apparent by her organization of both Model Parliament and Model UN, running a Poli-Sci. club, her numerous strong opinions Keg We have no rights! J and biting sarcasm. Her ambition is to be Prime Minister. And her fate? To be Joe Clark's personal secretary. She has been actively involved in sports over the years for Braemar house and for the school volleyball and badminton teams. Often seen galloping down the halls mumbling, Don't mind me - I'm in Grade 12 , ooooui or Bu-bu-bu-bu , we often wondered if her mind was really all there. But it obviously was, because Deb is hardworking and ambitious. This summer, she's off to France to take a second stab at becoming bilingual fthe first didn't work out too well, right Deb?J She will be attending Carleton University in Ottawa next fall to take Political Science, heading toward a career in either Law or Journalism. We'll miss you Debbi - life won't be quite as interesting without you around! !i'06w Shelley Muir As a veteran BH'er, Shelley has used her thirteen years of experience to make school life a smoother run for all. She was the Library Prefect this year and tirelessly aided in all school functions and fund raisers. Shelley en- thusiastically helped out in all Executive Council projects, such as waterbombing SJR's canoe trip and the mass skip- out. Ms. Muir, in her banana'l gym pants, was an active participant in sports, both for Ballater, where she led the scoring for basketball, and in extracurricular teams such as curling, basketball and volleyball. The class always knew when there was trouble brewing as Shelley's 0h lordy, lordy, lordy echoed down the hall. She plans to attend the University of Manitoba next year to study either Commerce or Arts. Best of luck, Shelley, we know you'll go far! Svinhee, Suzan, Bath Sindee Trepel Sindee graced our halls in grade nine, four years ago. During that time she has more than made her mark. Her bubbling enthusiasm, and cheerful attitude were brought to their peak this year when she was elected to be the head of Glen Gairn House, and made an excellent choice. Sindee could always be counted on as she's without a doubt the most reliable person we have ever come across. The amount of times Sindee spent in the gym supervising q lunch hours when it wasn't even her day tt are countless. Next year Sindee plans to 'Qgir take Arts at the University of Manitoba and she has already organized her carpool for next September. Sindee has had a successful year and ended it off on the right foot with an excellent night at grad with a certain T.M. Our best to you and keep in touch! Sue Pan Sue Pan, or as Cory calls her, Sue-Pan- d-sandwiches, has been at the school for three years. Sue has managed to survive it all, even after being Head of Residence this year. If yet another person asks if there is any mail for them she may collapse. Last year Sue was head of invitations for grad. She was on the volleyball team this year. What bumps and spikes! Sue also joined the Art Club and even managed to attend some of the classes. Sue hopes to go to the University of Alberta or Victoria and enter the field of Science. See you in 10 years, Sue, at our reunion! Good Luck! Barb Rivalin ' As Barb puts it she has been a student at Balmoral Hall for a long nine years! tWell that explains everythinglj During the past 3 years Barb has been the motivating force behind Craig Gowan House, and can be heard every day three during housemeetings saying, Where is everybody? One of Barb's pet peeves concerning her perfect status is being referred to as Miss Barb Rivalin, Head of Glen Gairn , isn't it Mr. Russell? Barb will be giving up her life of adventure at BH to attend the University of Manitoba next year and will eventually enter the field of Medical Rehabilitation, after completing her training at the U of M. She plans to take a course at the University of North Dakota which is geared to working with children with speech and hearing disabilities. Best of luck from us all, Barb! illllztrtg, En-Ann, ill-Iaheleine Jo-Ann Wilsbech Jo-Ann has been at B.H. for the past 3 years. Being a member of Glen Gairn she has a lot of house spirit. She enjoys badminton, but not running. During her time at the school she has participated in school activities. She was very involved with the Reach for the Top school team and was even seen on television. Also she is a great lover of books and has therefore been seen in the school library helping out after school or at lunch. Jo-Ann has participated in the drama performances put on by the school every year. She also likes French and dinners out with her camarades de classe. In September she plans to major in science at the U. of M. Her ambition is to become a Computer Scientist. Good luck to you in the future Jo-Ann! Madeleine Willis Maddy came to B.H. in Grade 9, and since then she has been a bright and musical light in the Grade 12 class. Madeleine was involved in Reach for the Top and, with Jo-Ann, was a real help to Mrs. Law in the Library. Her real forte , however, was music, and many times we were able to hear her delightful singing and guitar playing. Next year Madeleine plans to enter the University of Manitoba, Ottawa, or Carleton in the Bachelor of Science Program. She is also a candidate for the Page Programme in the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Good luck next year, Maddy, wherever you are! Marty Riley Although Marty attended Balmoral Hall for only one year, she had a great deal of school spirit, and participated in a lot of activities around B.H. She belonged to Craig Gowan, showing much enthusiasm in house games. During the winter, she spent her Thursdays after school at the curling rink. She was the skip of her team, winning the curling trophy at the end of the season. She joined the badminton team, coming close to competing in the bad- minton finals. Her leisure time was spent doing Fabric Arts projects. After graduation, she plans to go into Ar- chitecture at the University of Oklahoma. Halehidnrg Ahhresan Mr. Russell, honoured guests, parents, staff, and fellow students: Another year has been completed and as I look out amongst the students I can see that they are as happy as I am. Yet, amongst the smiles I can see a group of tear streaked cheeks. These faces belong to those of us who are going our separate ways. But, fear not, we will never leave you. As I look back over the four years that I have been here I remember many happy times, several of which have taken place this past year. I'm sure that you will never forget our famous skip out day, the highlight being our notes written in various languages. Debbi's all night party organized and attended by the W.T.H.C. Club was another memorable event which aided in bringing our class closer together. And many of us will be forever grateful to Allyson and her dating service, for without it we might have gone to grad stag. Executive Council worked extremely well together, and organized many activities. One of the least recognized, and possibly most exciting was the water- bombing of the annual S.J.R. 4:00 a.m. canoe trip. The highlight of that was running a B.H. kilt up their flagpole and letting it fly at half mast. Including fun, we have also experienced many painstaking events such as essay due dates, tests, and, the most dreaded of all, exams. This has been demonstrated by the sleepless nights many of us spent in order to meet these deadlines. Through all of this and more you could, however, always count on our class to be full of support when it was needed. Being a member of such a close knit class has been the number one factor contributing to the outcome of such a superb 1980-81 school year. To my fellow graduates I would like to emphasize the importance of your dominant characteristic which is the ability to fight until you win. May you never lose that quality. And to the remaining students I would like to say that even though at times school seems like an uphill battle, don't give up, the reward is worth it. Take it from us, the angel's in white. But a word to my fellow classmates: Although we are dressed in white today, when we get to get together at our ten year reunion l expect your kilts to be pressed, your shoes to be shined, and your ties to be done up properly. In conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the happiness in the future, keep smiling, and bonne chance! RHF , . E. .., Qllniaing 7 xizrizimzia 5 ,Mr . nv' 1 .ia - x .
