She can be a leader, an initiator, or a follower as so she chooses. Our school is laughter, the warmth of happy voices around the halls and a sharing oflife Each is secure because each is cherished, where cares are lightened with loving words and wherejoy is relived again and again. In Optima Anni '78 we have tried to create an image of this our Balmoral Hall Family, and its life both within and without the halls. Being a member is notjust a 9:00-4:00 commitment. The school is constantly occupied even after the dismissal bell rings, whether it be with Inter-School sports, yearbookfi j, drama, residence life, or what have you. It is with warm and special appreciation that I thank those who have been deeply involved with the production of Optima Anni: My staff, especially those who stuck with me to the end Qremember our smorgasbord picnics, the unexpected fire alarm, and burning the midnight candle at both ends? jg our advisors Mrs. Sures, Mrs. Barker and Mrs. Frieseng and our representative from ICP Russ Erskine - all who have been so helpful and encouraging. Thanks also goes to those many people behind-the-scenes: Mr. Russell, Mrs. Lammiman, Mrs. Honey, and Miss Sharman to name a few. The Balmoral Hall Graduate is trained in Life Skills. She can understand the definition of education, the mean- ing of responsibility and participation, and she can gain insight into her dealings with herself and other people. On behalf of the student body I would like to extend my heart- felt best wishes to the Class of '78. May this edition of Optima Anni create many laughs and smiles today and in years to come. Memory is a garden in which the future grows, and may your reminiscences of your last year at Balmoral Hall yield a plentiful harvest. We'll miss you! God Bless. And now Miss Sharman, Graduates, Staff, Students and Friends, especially for You, I present OUR YEARH- - - - Heather Provis. 'sg 5' 1 -3-j S.. ,x The Editor, Heather Provis, with Miss B. Though she considers them too many to countn, she describes her alliance with our family as being a very happy one. Miss Sharman is known throughout the school today as being the artist whose scripture writing adorns placards, diplomas and yes, even the title page of this year- book. May your friendship with our family continue for many years, both through your endeavors with the Alumnae Association, and through your numerous personal contacts. ut jfamilp at Earls anh imap ...... So, here goes! ! I don't know how many times I have told Parents, Staff, Board Members, and Friends that to date we are having an extremely good year. Everyone who knows what is going on around our hallowed halls Qin the main I refer to the girlsj agrees with me. Surely, we can't all be wrong! ! This year I have been particularly pleased with the at- titude of our STUDENTS. Positive, not negative: Construc- tive, not destructive . . . A healthy respect for what B.H. stands for pervades our community. After all is said and done . . . A school is not bricks and mortar, books and binders, playing fields and gymnasiums Qor what have youj but PEOPLE. We have some fine young people around the place and they make the school what it is today . . . A school of which we can all be proud. lf' .fv I am truly proud of our achievements this year. I am proud of the way the school is developing. I am proud to be the Head of a fine Family of people. To those of you who are leaving us this School Year, I say . . . In the art world there was the King Tut exhibit in Chicago, the scandal of C.F. Frye, and of course the world famous Balmoral Hall Ice Sculpture Competition. On the music scene there was the new Broadway musicale Timbuktu,,' disco fever, and the grand opening of the Gift of the Sunn an operetta put on by an all-star cast from Balmoral Hall. And who could ever forget our exciting Spirit Week in March, where during one Mufti Day the Grade 12's looked like Roy Rogers Qgood guys dressed in whitej while the Grade 11's looked like they were holding a competition for a Black Bart Look-a-like I-Ieadgirl: Kim Thomas School Captain: Biddy McDonald Contest. Where does the time go? It seems like just days ago, when we were all sitting in the gym for our first assembly of the year, with the new girls looking ill at ease in their Unormall' clothes, while we old girls greeted each other commenting on new hair styles and comparing tans. Now we can't separate the old girls from the new girls, no matter how hard we try. Everyone has come to- gether to form the student body for the 77-78 school year. We hope that it has been a good year for everyone. We both agree that we will never forget, for who could forget things like the Queen visiting the B.H. picnic, tea and coffee in the Common room, and all that homework! Plus house games and everything else that has made this year one of the best school years. As We go our separate ways Seeking Better Things in the big world we hope that the en- thusiasm which we have found so strong in this school will continue in the same manner, and that you too will strive for better things. Keep smiling! Yahoo! Kim Thomas Biddy McDonald P.S. Bernadette reminds me ofa big blue pig! K. P.P.S. You die Kim! Bernadette is not a pig. Fu. 3Kutb'5 Report And yet we have another year of memories for the halls and rooms of Dalton l-louse to absorb. This year being no exception, Residence has had more than its share of them. Between broom duals and midnight races in the hallways Residence has continued to be the con- stant center of infectious laughter, in- cessant giggling and non-stop chatter. Res. is a real cultural center and I feel a lot of us have gained through our association with our foreign friends. The activities in Res. included such things as horseback riding, swimming and a riverboat cruise. The day-to-day activities within Res. include battles over the television and phone, hap- hazard ping-pong and cross-country skiing. All in all, Res. has proven to be most interesting this year. He had not been for a walk on the beach in many, many years and the warm sun and fresh air made him feel young again. Seagulls cried above him in the cloudless sky. He paused for a moment to look up at them, squinting in the bright sunlight and marvelling at their gracefulness and beauty. Waves rolled on to the rocks and broke into a white froth. The old man felt the spray touch his wrinkled cheeks as he stared out at the endless ocean. Suddenly, he noticed that an especially large wave had left a small fish squirming on the stones. It flipped about, trying to find the water it needed for life. The gray-headed man felt a strong compassion for this tiny creature, so helpless and defenceless. He bent over, straining every muscle in his tired back. His aged legs shook under the sudden exercise as he leaned over farther and farther. He stopped a moment to steady himself and then extended his arm towards the little animal. He gently picked it up between his knarled fingers. For a moment he watched it lying in his palm. I-Ie saw its tiny body shimmering in the sun's rays and its small black eyes blinking in fear. The old man tossed the tiny fish as far as he could. It hit the surface about five feet from the waterline and disappeared beneath the surface. The man smiled to himself. Holly Kerr Grade 9 THE ALLEY Dark stone walls enclose the alley, blocking the sun and preventing the sounds of the outside world from entering. Rats scamper across the cracked cement through which scraggy weeds grow, fighting for room with the discarded wrappers, tin cans, and broken bottles. Black, sinister windows stare out blankly at the battered trash cans that stand sentinel at forbidding doors. A bunch of flowers lie limp on the waste, their heads droop ing, seemingly unable to bear the rancid smell which rises from beneath them. From amongst the pile of debris, rats' beady eyes stare menacingly, then resume their search for edible morsels. Flies swarm around a dog's waste. Obscene words scrawled over the grey walls curse their sordid World. Only near the end of the alley does the rumble of traffic penetrate the silence. A different life goes on outside the alleyg the sun shines, people laugh. Urte Reyes Grade 9 WAR War Frightening, dangerous, Running, Shooting, Killing A Greedy Man's Pastime, Death. Mr. Russell, teachers and fellow students. My topic for today is Parents Should Be Seen and Not Heardn. As the daughter of two parents, I would like to give my feelings on the subject - I fully agree! How many times have you been told to clean your room - many I'm sure. What about Aunt Doris who hasn't cleaned her house in thirty years? Does mother tell her to clean her house - NO? Again I stress - UParents should be seen and not heardu. Parents can be very embarrassing. As I walked to the U. of W. steps to say my speech, my mother yelled out of the car, Speak clearly and loudly, dear , in front of dozens of people. If you are going out with friends do you ever hear this line - Wear your hat and mitts, dear. Really mother in the middle of June? One big problem with parents is when they tell me what time to go to bed. Just because Father has had a hard day at the of- fice doesn't mean we all have to go to bed at 7:30! What about clothes? Wear your pretty pink frilly dress, dear, Grandma is coming to dinner . Really, no one wears pretty, pink, frillyw dresses anymore. Maybe parents should change places with children and WE could tell them when to go to bed, when to do their homework and what to wear. In closing, I will say one last time. Parents should be seen and not heard . illilatbematirs umpetitiun 4. L The Manitoba Honour Roll lists the top 151 students in ' the province. Balmoral Hall had 8 ranked out of 12. Qilher jiuhilee Earheque QUEEN'S ADDRESS My husband and I wish you, and all mem- bers of the Commonwealth countries, a very happy jubilee Barbecue. This year has been one of both joy and tragedy, and we remem- ber particularly at this time, all those in North Borneo, Puerto Rico, and Flin Flon. 1977 marks the year of my Cherries Jub . . .Silver Jubilee, and I have fond memories of my twenty-five years on the throne-for which I have a new, quilted, silver cushion. People in all parts of the world have hon- oured this event in many different ways- some more different than others. I feel close to you all in Canada, particu- larly with our son Andrew at school in your midst. However, if he does not pull his royal socks up, he will be sent to an ice flow in the Arctic to write the next episode of Upstairs, Downstairs . My family and I enjoyed being with you all for the Games of the Twenty-First Olym- paid, in Montreal last year. I feel, personally, that Anne would have been much more com- petent in the saddle, had she refrained from eating so much French Onion Soup. But, as the Common Market would state-and I quote - C'est la Vie . My husband gives me much pleasure. . . in accompanying me on a Jubilee tour of the Southern Hemisphere, where we saw the u- sual herds of kangaroosg koala bears, and platypus. . .etc. We were proud when we learned that our son Charles has become Chief Crowfoot in Alberta. I do wish, however, that he would refrain from using the Palace curtains as a tepee. Balmoral Hall conjures up visions of one of my homes so dear to me. In the High- lands of Scotland, amid the swirl of the Kilt and the purple of the heather, lies my home at the address of thirty-one, Haggis Crescent, also known as Balmoral Castle. Here I am able to relax and pursue such pleasures as sword dancingg highland fling- ing, and the tossing of the caber. I hope thay you have equal enjoyments here at Balmoral Hall. And now, my children, join my husband and I in wishing you every joy and happi- ness at your Jubilee Barbecue. Copyrightgjane Burpee 1977. Its tremendous success was largely due to the organizational ability ofthe dance committee, chaired by Mrs. J. D. Shanski. The following mothers Worked with Mrs. Shanski, and all should be thanked and congratulated: Mrs. T. W. Sidebottom, Mrs. A. E. Rattray, Mrs. D. O. Wood, Mrs. A. E. Choptain, Mrs. J. A. Marsh, Mrs. B. Jessiman, and the Advisor, Mrs. N. T. Russell. As well as the dance itself, an important fund-raiser that took place the same evening was the Silent Auc- tion. The profits far exceeded those of the previous Auctions, largely because ofthe wide scope of assort- ed objects - everything from paintings to rent-a-Cadil- lac, from rib-eye steaks to rent-a-Spanish Villa. The pieces put up for bid were assiduously collected by a committee chaired by Mr. G. de Jardin, including Mr. E. Coughlin, Mr. P. McDonald, Mr. J. Shanski, Mr. J. E. I-Iinchliffe and Mr. R. E. But we found out from a reliable source that she has applied at Guelph University and Red River Community College for Hotel Admin. Besides excelling in badminton, she has admirable repre- sented the school at Eaton's. After nine years at the school, her willing- ness to help will be missed. Good Luck, Mary Grace! . . . AGNES BORBELY, BOTTOM RIGHT: Our mOSt fluent Hungarian frog came to B.H. in Grade one. Since then she has shown her artistic flair by not only painting drama sets, and doing make-up, but she has been in art classes for as long as anyone can remember. Even though our runners couldn't compete with her flashing red boots, she sparked up our Phys. Ed. classes with her Hungarian dances. The only time good', little Andrea got into trouble occur- red when her boyfriend from Petersfield met her boyfriend from Winnipeg. Andrea became the se- cond Pinky Tuscadaro on the back of A. As Braemarls Head in '77, Biddy's attempt at entering every event in Track 84 Field Day was ad- mirable, if not fool-hardy. We wish you Luck in the future, Mabel. . . CATHERINE OSLER, FAR RIGHT: Cathy, alias Henry Gibson, seemed to have a passion for flowers. Cathy was ex- tremely quiet, and a hardworker. In Grade six, Cathy was the tallest Indian in our cardboard canoe, and she has remained the tallest ever since. Cathy's rule is Silence is Golden , and she hasn't broken it in her seven years at B.I-I. Cathy plans to become the next Margaret Mead as she enters Anthropol- ogy at U. of M. Good Luck! ! . .. We wish you the Best of Luck, Panee! I ! . . . JANE THEODCRE, FAR RIGHT: Ted Came to B.H. in grade nine, and she's still wearing the same black shoes that she wore on her first day here. Jane's greatest musical tri- umph arrived when she landed the part of Snow White in the audience! It quickly became apparent that Art was Jane- a-Belle's strongest forte, while Math was her nemisis. Last year she was Head of the winning house, Glen Gairn, even though she had an aversion to thejob. QSquire,s anyonej? Jane was one of the few accepted into the Red River Adver- tising Art Program. Good Luck, I. T.! . . . KIM THOMAS, SECOND RIGHT: Kimberly Kay was our froggie Head Girl this year. Her yankee accent kept us in stitches during her first year in Canada . Kimba fit right into B.H. right from the start. A natural leader, Kim was Sports Captain last year and was active in Craig Gowan's ac- tivities. QNO, Craig is not a guyj! She could be seen on the basketball court at any time until that unfortunate night when she tripped over her big feet and wrecked her ankle. Kim is going into Commerce next year, and then on to Law. QBy the way, while at U. of M., learn the Canadian anthem because we're sick of the star-spangled Bannerj! I . . . HEATHER UPCOTT, FAR LEFT: This was Heather's first year at B.H. She aroused our curiosity in Math class with her dared expression which was due to the Sony Co. Heather was really into Yoga, and could in weird and unnatural posi- tions before gym class. K ss ?aIehittnrp Zlhhress Good Afternoon, Friends, Staff and Students of Balmoral Hall. For the past month, I have been threatening my classmates with the idea that I'm going to stand up here and telljokes. They have been alternately aghast, fright- ened and encouraging. But as the significance of this occasion has finally occurred to me, after the exams, the celebrations following the exams and the rehearsal of this important event, I realize what is finally going to happen: We the Class of '78 are going to graduate. It has been a long haul, as anyone sitting in these front few pews will tell you. We have cried, laughed, behaved and misbehaved for the last year in this school. We laughed when Cathie Coughlin did her burpees, while we cried when our classmate, Nicole Schroyer, left us. We have misbehaved in every one of our classes at one point or another, while at other times we have been the model ofa perfect class. QThe teachers will have to think about that one! Q No matter how long we live, we will never forget our commonroom, where we shared everything, from card games to the latest dances, to our test scores. None of us will ever forget struggling through HAMLET, Jeanne's after-exam parties, Biddy twisting her hair or Andrea going to the park. I think if our class had a motto, it would be: One for all, and all for one, so let the good times roll. While that might sound silly or as if we were always having fun, let me set everyone straight. I have never seen such a group which was so concerned about the future. While having fun is great, and school is great, remember life does exist after high school, and it lasts a lot longer. So we are faced with the Herculean task of having a good time while still being serious and concerned with our futures. Ifl had any piece of advice which I would pass on to the students of Balmoral Hall, I would tell you to try and reach the perfect balance. Life is short, and every- thing depends on what you make of it. If you feel like putting a lot of enthusiasm and spirit into your years at B.H., that's exactly what you will come out with. And believe me, that's nothing to scoff at. So, in making the final farewells for the Class of ,78, I would like to say thank- you to the teachers and to Mr. Russell, because everything they have done for us has been in our best interests. So thank-you and good-bye! Plus a big Good- luck to the remaining students, and, yes, it does feel good to walk up that aisle and not trip over your feet or the carpeting!
