This year was a year for trying out new things, such as the swim meet lwhich was a huge successi open campus for the grades twelves lwhich made us work hard to keep theml and many other events. There is not too much that I call tell you that the yearbook cannot show you. l will say one thing, this is my chance to say good-bye to a really great school. l've learned a lot in my two short years at the school, l've learned not just in the classroom but in Res and all around the school, l've learned a lot about people, that to me is one thing that I will always remember this school for, its people. I'm going to miss everyone and I would like to wish each and everyone of you all the luck and love the world may give you. Bye B.H.! DEAN OF RESIDENCE Mrs. Gwen Theodore SECRETARY Mrs. May Lammiman A , Headmaster's Message to the Grads of 1977 Life is like a book . . .a book divided into a number of chapters. Today in graduating from High School you end a particular chapter and move on to the next . . . YOUR SCHOOL EDUCATION CHAPTER IS OVER. It has been said that school days are the happiest days: the happiest days of your life . I do not know whether or not this will prove to be the case for each of you. I do know for certain that you have had many hap- py days and many pleasant days, many successful days, many disappointing days . . . but, whatever these may be, I know also that you will take away with you many fond memories. For some of you seated here in front of me these memories will be from a good many years spent at Balmoral Hall: B.H., your school. You will never forget this school. Whether you have been here for one year or for twelve years, you will never forget the dramatic, traumatic, sad, funny and very special times you have experienced. DON'T FORGET THEM. FOR THEY ARE TREASURES INDEED AND PARAGRAPHS IN WHAT WILL PROVE TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING CHAPTERS OF YOUR LIFE. In moving to the next chapter of your life, you move into a time when you will become more and more responsible for making decisions for yourselves. I ad- vise you, I urge you to think things through weigh the advantages with the disadvantages, the pros with the cons, and may your judgement be wise and good. The late Robert Frost lan American poetl wrote . . . Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller. Long I stood . . . And looked down one as far as I could THEN TOOK THE OTHER. When you come to the roads that diverge , may you choose the right one for you. What better final message can l give to you than the words of advice the mother superior gives to the novice nun Maria lin the film The Sound of Musicl as Maria is leaving the shelter of the monastry . . .to tackle a job in the big world outside: Climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every by-way, till you find your dream. Remember us ... we will remember you ... Good luck and may God bless you. '- wsu... W-Q ' . By: Stacey Jessiman Grade Three Glen Gairn The Travelling Sandwich In Sudbury, Ontario there was a lady, this lady was making a peanut butter and jam sandwich. There is not anything strange about that. But what she was going to do with the sandwich was very, very strange. She was going to mail the sandwich to Africa. The next day the lady wrapped up the sandwich air tight, then gently dropped the sandwich in the mailbox. From then on the sandwich went through many adventures. When the sandwich was being put in order it came across this man. The man had very big blue eyes, a stomach the size of a horse, plus a nose that Monsters Monsters make me shake They give me heart ache I do not know how so many can get Into my small closet In the night, the night the monsters come out They make me want to shout So remember never to pout when monster are about. By: Roberta Grade Three Glen Gairn could smell food a mile away. It was nearly lunch time so he was very hungry. When he picked up the sandwich and smelled it he whispered, I must have it, I must. But just as he was going to unwrap the sandwich his boss went by so had to put the sandwich in it's correct place. So the sandwich went on to Africa. The sandwich went on the plan safely and came off safely in Africa. It made its way all the way to the house, but as the mailman was putting the sandwich in the mailbox, the dog jumped up and ate the sandwich. Ballater House 50 15 sf Braemar House Breamar is the name of the house I among others of my nature were chosen to participate in. The symbol for this house, as it is called, is one large, smiling, over-grown hippopotamus. Her name is Burnadette and con- stantly keeps one eye closed. The reason for this I'm not too sure of but some day if she dares to open her other eye I'm sure she will discover a new angle to life. Maybe she is the wise one though. Maybe everyone should protect themselves in this manner. The saying goes two heads are better than one , but no-one has ever said how many eyes these heads must have. Fluth Markham graduates i 8 75 Y- Karen Purves School Captain Elizabeth Cherewan Head Girl Liz, or more commonly known as Lizard by her friends, has been Balmoral's head girl this past year, and was also School Captain for the year 1975-76. She has attended B.H. for the short time of 14 years and we wonder how she is going to manage in that outside world when she finds that she doesn't need to wear her kilt any more. Liz could be seen driving around in her truck throughout the year with half the grade 12 class rolling around in the back, going to important places like McDonaId's or Dutch Maid. Liz was expected at quite a few universities, but she thinks she will begin next year at Trent University and eventually get into medicine. A lot of us are going to miss Liz and we wish her the best of luck in the future years. Karen has been a part of Balmoral for quite a while, but during that time she was a Braemar House Head for the 1975-76 school year and just this past year was School Captain. Karen was never one of the shy type, she always made her presence known by either singing, screaming at her departure or just making a lot of weird noises while she was there. In between her duties of keeping the younger girls in line, Karen and the other prefects could be seen lasooing each other with their cords and dragging each other down the halls. Another one of Karen's abnormalities . . . oops, l mean characteristics was that she was a constant dieter. Either she'd be eating salad or else she wasn't going to eat at all for the next week. Karen's plans for next year are to attend Queens University from which she has received the Tricolour Scholarship. We all wish Karen good luck and good fortune for that not so distant future. 76 Michelle Shaw Mich or Mitchell as she soon became known as, has been going to B.H. for two years. It was a daily occurrence to see Mich going through somebody elses lunch to see if there were any cookies. Despite all of her skinnyness, Mich was either talking about food or eating it.. Mich could always be found in her second home fthe washroom when she wasn't in class, which was about half of the timel. One of this girl's pastimes was to go out for coffee, and going out for coffee with Mich was an experience in itself if she was driving her notorious bug . During coffee breaks, Mich would talk non-stop about such important articles as: designer clothes, TOTO, which were the best bands and who wanted to go to Bird's Hill Park for the long weekend? Right now, Michelle's plans are to get an Arts degree from the University of Manitoba, so she can later on become an air stewardess. We all wish Mich good luck in the future. life at B.H. does. Punam Nath Punam, who is sometimes referred to as Poo or even Putt-nam, has been a B.H. girl now for two years. This girl added much to our school life with her thoughtfulness to others. Poo could be seen giving advice to people that it would be best if they wore a helmet to drive a car, or write a test, or even when they're having coffee. Poo's wisdom was limitless giving answers to serious questions with a maybe , maybe not . lt always looked like this girl was concentrating on mysterious things even while she walked. Poo would get so deep in thought she wouldn't even swing her arms as most people do naturally. Poo's pastimes consisted of playing tennis, driving hot and heavy Datsun, avoiding big and small cats and convincing M.S. that little kids are cute. Punam's present plans are to attend the University of Manitoba and enter pre-medicine. We all wish Poo the best of everything in the future years. 77 Sriwan Sethwan Sriwan came all the way from Bangkok Thailand this past fall to loin us in this final year at Balmoral Hall. Sirwan learned our language quickly enough upon her arrival at the res with so many new faces speaking English Even though Sirwan was a quiet girl she soon caught on to the new style of By the end of the year she didn't appear to be half as shocked at some of the stunts we pulled, then she did at the beginning of the year Sirwan plans to attend University of Winnipeg next year to enter the Facul ty of Science. We all hope the best for Sirwan and good luck in whatever she Susan Briercliffe Susan, who is also known as Brier, Ugly, has been coming to B.H. for three years. Susan's first year was spent in res, but fortunately, that's all past history now. Some of Susan's pastimes throughout the year was to try and not to start an argument at lunch or else she'd end up in a snow bank or with two tons of leaves in her clothes. A favorite pastime of Susan's was to see how much she could bug the Headgirl before she had to run for the nearest door. Often, Susan could be found painfully listening to a certain P.G. and all the excitement that had been happening in Charleswood, or else she could be seen tracking down her black greasy jacket and who had worn it last. Susan's plans for the next year are to attend the University of Alberta and get a degree in audiology. All her friends wish her the best in the future. Nora Li Nora came all the way from Hong Kong to spend her first and final year at Balmoral Hall. This girl appears to be quiet, shytype, but as the saying goesg appear- ances are deceiving. Ask Nora a question or her opinion on something and you may never get a word in edgewise. By staying in residence this past year, Nora has learned the way of Cana- dians fairly quickly which will probably be to her advantage. Next year, Nora plans to attend the University of Manitoba, so she can take administrative studies. We all wish Nora good luck and good fortune in her future. Marion Hlckln Peggy Sue originally came from Thompson, Manitoba, when she moved into Balmoral's residence in 1974. She spent one year in res, and oddly enough she has never talked about that time since. Peggy is no ordinary person though, she has developed many diversified talents through her B.H. years. She has been known to fall off skateboardsg flick non-existent cigarettes up her noseg certainly go out for coffee even though she was flat brokeg sometimes even do some last minute studying during those coffee breaks. There are many things which could be said about Peggy's charm and wit but a writeup can only be so long. Peggy's present plans are to attend the U. of M. and find a man . . . I mean a degree. We all wish her luck in the future and hope that she won't ever forget her friends at B.H. 78 Arabella Leung Arabella came from Kong Kong to descend upon Balmoral in 1975. She moved into the residence for her first year, but by grade 12 she decided to be adventurous and try the life of a day girl. One of Arabella's pastimes throughout the year was to do all her homework and study during Mrs. Sabbadini's math classes. Another pastime was not to be caught by Mrs. Sabbadini. But perhaps Arabella is trying to amend her ways for she has made plans to study accounting at the University of Toronto. From all of us to Arabella, we wish her the best of luck. luck in whatever she tries. Robin McCartney Robin, who also goes under the alias of Muff, has attended B.H. for two years. Being a native of Lynn Lake, Man., Fiobin became a residence girl and just this past year was the Head of Residence. Robin, who is very much the athlete, was on practically every team for the school. Her other extra curricular activities included such things as: mooching apples from the day girls lunches, asking stupid questions in Biology, either talking about or trying to create an embarrassing moment for someone, or starting paper airplane flights in English class. Despite all this the youngest member of our class is a great person to know, Robin has added a lot to the maddness of our room. Robin plans to attend the University of Guelph next year, hopefully to become a veterinarian. We all wish Robin the best of everything in the future and that she'll never forget her Balmoral friends. 79 MargaretAng Margaret came from Singapore to become a Balmoral girl this past fall All though she appeared to be a quiet person we all soon discovered she was a mathematics whiz. Margaret could always be recognized as the girl who preferred her trusty plaid pants to the kilt The most apparent quality she possessed was one of never being in a rush Wherever Marg went she sauntered, even in Mrs. Harper's class she never hurried Presently Margaret s pains are focused on University of Manitoba and we all wish her the best of Leah Walker Leah came from Swan River, two years ago to become a B.H. girl. Leah, the lady of the class has a discrete distaste for football players and other ob- noxious objects. Despite this, Leah still has to hide in corners when she sees E.P. coming, to check and see if there is anything hidden in her hands or sleeves, i.e., peanut butter. When not calmly walking from classroom to classroom reciting her Shakespeare, she is running like a fiend because she is late for class and the teachers lock the door when the bell rings. A rather demure, Leah can be seen jumping the fence outside residence in order to catch the bus. Now though, Leah plans to put that all behind and goto Queens University this fall to study Literature and Music. Later she hopes to move to London, England. If she does that though, she'll have to start watching out for E.L. again. We all wish Leah the best of luck. it-H Mary Ann Russell Mary Ann was a newcomer to Balmoral this year when she moved from Quebec to lof all placesl Aikens House. Mary Ann, being the head master's daughter, was hard to handle at first because we didn't know what would happen if she didn't like us. Finally it turned out that Mary Ann was as nutty as the rest of us and that she seemed to understand our strange ways. Another member of the eternal coffee gang, Mary Ann could usually be found with other girls discussing such scholastic problems as the latest physics problem, Russian Communism, or rate the guys that walk past the window. Mary Ann plans to attend the University of Winnipeg where she will take languages and music. All her friends wish her the best of luck in the future. Dannie Kung Dannie came to B.H. this past fall direct from Hong Kong. Once she settled into res, Dannie decided to try out for the Canadian way of life with a little added flare of her own. For instance, she nearly gave us all a heart attack during one of Mrs. Harper's classes, during a game of floor hockey. As the puck moved towards Dannie she swung her stick up into the air and let out a mighty Hi-ya before she chased after it. In res you could always find Dannie talking on the Hot Line . To say the least, Dannie has certainly added to the quality of our class. Dannie's plans for next year is to further her education at Salem State University. All her friends wish her success for future years. 80 Tracy Kohut Tracy was a newcomer this past year from Souris, Manitoba, who added to the maniac-ism of the grade 12 class. Being a devout res girl, Tracy could be found during her lunch hours, breaks, spares and any other time a teacher wasn't around, in Squires with at least 10 other res girls. Despite all that though, Tracy managed to maintain a high average in all of her school work. Tracy's future plans are to get her registered Laboratory Technicians diploma from Brandon General Hospital. We all wish her the best of luck in her future years and hope that she'll never forget all her friends at B.H. Judy Perepeluk Shelley Wood Shelley came to be a Balmoral girl two years ago all the way from Edmon- ton, Alberta. This red headed res girl was always making up new schemes to do something with herself other than homework. Shelley could be found plotting our her brilliant plans over a cup of coffee somewhere not too far from the school. One of Shelley's biggest dreams was to drive a big MAC truck across Canada for a living. But she might have changed her mind since then. What Shelley is really planning for next year is to attend either University of Alberta or Trent to study law. We wish her all the success in the world. Judy was a newcomer this year coming all the way from Flin Flon. Judy being the mysterious woman type, graced the classrooms with her presence whenever she was in the mood for something differet to do. Despite all her illnesses though, she was able to keep up in all her school work and tor- ment a certain ugly about her ugliness. In between her busy schedule of flying back and forth to Flin Flon to see Gregg Judy could always be found in Squires during her spare time counting off the days before she could get back to Flin Flon again. Judy's present plans are to either attend the University of Brandon or take a course in accountancy in iwhere else?l Flin Flon. Whatever Judy does, we know that she will make the right choice and we wish her success for the future. 8I Kathleen Scribner Kathy descended upon Balmoral Hall two years ago from Gimli, Manitoba. Kathy was the harrassed yearbook editor this past year, she could be seen occasionally pulling her hair by the handful when things didn't seem to be going quite right or on schedule with the yearbook. Kathy was a girl who would count off the minutes until 3:45 rolled around on Friday afternoons so she could rush home with Blair for another wild weekend in Gimli, Then during the weekdays Kathy would run around telling everyone how many more sleeps till the next Friday. Kathy plans to take radiological technology at Fled River College begin- ning this summer. We all know she'll do well and we wish her the best of luck in everything. L Elizabeth Pickup Lil came to us from Swan Fliver this past fall to finish her schooling. It didn't take long for Lil to establish herself with the reputation of being a practical joker. There will always be fond memories of Lil, smearing L.W.'s nose, or finding ancient cookies in a desk and giving them to some unsuspecting girl to eat, or even when she had the water ring and squirted A.L. in the face with it during English class. Lil could always be seen hopping along the halls to some tune that was go- ing through her head at the time, be it the Stones or Genesis. In between these times and always falling out of her chair in Geography class, Lil always had a soft spot in her heart for the strays around the school. Lil's big plans for next year are to move to England where all those great bands come from, and continue her education there. We all know Lil will be in her glory there, but we still want her to know that all the girls that became her friends this last year will miss her and that we wish her the best of everything in the future. Dallas Barkman Dallas has been a part of the B.H. scene for quite some time. Even though she comes from Steinbach, the girl.will rush home for her weekends, despite the never ending homework, then return to school with a smile on her face. We sure have been wondering what the attraction is in Steinbach. Dallas keeps us laughing with her wild vocabulary, with such words as ouyshuch or I amment , and then she'll insist such words exist. Dallas plans to attend the University of North Dakota next year so that she can get her degree in Speech Pathology. We all wish Dallas the best of luck in future years. 82 Pamela Gill Hey Pam - aren't 'cha excited? Pam, all though a shy and reserved girl when she came to B.H. in 1975, has developed into an individualistic rowdy by the end of 1977. Hailing from Ear Falls, Ontario, Pam entered residence two years ago, and during this past Christmas break she moved out to Charleswood. Since then, we still haven't heard the end of all the advantages of living there, over residence. During the year, her pastimes consisted of brushing her teeth at lunch, slugging a certain S.B. during history classes, and being picked up by a different car and male driver every other day. Pam's plans for the future are to enter nursing at University of Manitoba. We do hope that Pam won't forget us . . . for we know we won't forget her. l ,.,---- f. X E X -gi Susan Lee Susan moved from Hong Kong to Balmoral's residence in 1975 and she has been an enjoyable member of our class ever since. Although Susan was rather quiet and shy at the best of times, we always knew she was still there when we heard her laugh. Whether she was laughing with us or at us, was another question all together. Susan has been known for her genius in physics, chem, biology and math. If anyone ever had a problem in these areas, the easiest solution was to ask Susan, she seemed to know the answers for everything. Presently, Susan plans to enter Dalhousie University so she can get into the faculty of pharmacy. We all know this is an area where she will excel and we wish Susan the best of everything in the future. 83 QT Donors Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Sidebottom Weight Watcher Mr. R. B.
