Kenney, as Headmaster of Balmoral Hall, the school awakened to the dawn of a new era. Enrollment is increasing and so is the quality of teaching. The future will see the results of the work of many over a long period of time. The quality of any school is not determined by the texture of its bricks and mortar but rather by the thrust of teaching and being taught. The intimate teaching and fellowship environment at Balmoral Hall provides a unique experience for the attainment of the highest objectives of the educational process. The Grade Twelve class has now become part of the Alumnae group of the school. As the years go by and we gain in maturity, we will even more appreciate the opportunity given us by being part of the environment of the school. As Alumnae, we know that the school will always welcome us. More particularly however, as Alumnae we must recognize our responsibility to give the school full support. ln doing this, future generations can have the enriching experience afforded all of us. The Optima Anni will provide a source book of memories through the years to come. A school yearbook is a most important publication, which like good wine, becomes more treasured with the passage of time. The whole school should participate fully in the production. Unfortunately this has not been the case with the present edition. A warm and special thanks goes to Mrs. Kenney, whose guidance and advise has made this yearbook possible. I would also like to thank Mrs. Buck, who has put a great deal of work into this edition of Optima Anni. On behalf of the Grade Twelve we record our Goodbye, but not our Farewell. Collum 1!aeaiJma5ter'5 spurt TO OUR GRADUATES ln years to come, you will remember your Graduation as a time of mixed feelingsg happiness and anticipation together with sadness and perhaps anxiety. This is of course perfectly normal, and indeed throughout your lives you will experience similar mixed emotions when you are faced with a major change. It is of course a bit sad and discomforting to leave familiar faces and surroundings behindg this is understandable. But at the same time, how exhilerating it is to contemplate the future! New friends, new places, new challenges in work or study await you. Allow me to leave you with one final request. Regardless of your chosen pursuits in future, DO CONTINUE to question discuss, read and in essence LEARN. fl am not referring necessarily to post-secondary formal courses. J Remember that education is an ongoing process. A truly curious and questioning person never stops growing intellectually. You will be a happier, healthier, more confident and far more interesting person if you continue to supply your mind with food for thought . R. Martin Kenney Headmaster Mr. R.M. Wg 'M f. 1 H 'x 'z '11 hi, ifaeah Girl eport 1974-'75 has been an extremely prosperous and successful year for Balmoral Hall. Achievements this year have been numerous in all aspects of the school. The newly installed gym floor and new equipment helped to create a terrific sports atmosphere. We had many an exciting event which we will never forget. A cop's Anthem , the memorable Christmas Carol service, the countless Mufty Days , The I-lot Dog Day - which I'm sure many of the Junior School Girls and their Mothers will never forget, the Grade 10 Dance , May Day . which proved to be very fattening for some girls fnamely myselfj. Next, the annual Maytime with Mart Kenney . The music was delightful, I only wish that I knew how to dance properly to it. Field Day proved to be an exciting eventful fback achingj day, for some girls it was a lazy sun-tanning contest day. Finally, the unforgettable Graduation Dinner and Dance. We really appreciate all the work that the Grade ll's put into it. The decorating was beautifully done and the whole evening went by very quickly. Lastly, but not least, the Closing Exercises. Balmoral Hall is growing in every best way possible. Along with an excellently qualified staff, Balmoral Hall will continue to thrive and flourish as one of the best independent private girls schools in the country. I have enjoyed the position of Head Girl and I hope that my successor will have as much respect for the position as I have had. Love and Success to All Brigitte Bereznay M- .3'm..LZa!W?iB61r!... . Liz had a great gift of being able to smooth troubled water when contraversies 31086. She has been a friend to all and always showed that she cared about people. These admirable characteristics will be helpful to her along whatever road she chooses in life. Erigitte Eeregnap '69-'75 Brigitte arrived at Balmoral Hall as a residence student in 1969. She has gone frorr a chubby brat ' to a warm hearted Head Girl. She has taken the role of B . H. representative on the Eaton's Teen Council. Throughout the year we found Brigitte over dosing on spice tea. She is always willing to offer her assistance to anyone who asks Next year Brigitte will be attending University of Manitoba. We wish her a worlr of happiness and prosperity. Zbarhara Zadie '69-'75 Barb has been a rowdy part of B. H. for six years. No one could ever say that Bar did not have spirit, no matter what the case may be. Barb has a hobby of jogging up north to Dauphin to seek out a rare species, called a GOMER. Her position as Sports Captain from l9'73!l9'74 came in handy for this task. We all wish Barb the best of luck fin her future years. f Q liaeatbet iililtilntusb 7 3- 75 Heather came to B. Shelagh earned the honour of being a prefect because of her enthusiastic ability of working on the yearbook, and being President of the Grade 12 class. Next year Shelagh is planning to attend the University of Winnipeg. We all wish her the best of luck. was always trying to convert highland dancing into the latest dance steps. W If you ever want to know the latest gossip Heather is the one to look for. Heather was always there to lend a hand to a fellow student. she will be greatly missed by all of Balmoral Hall. Next year Heather will be at the University of Winnipeg. fri' f-Q.. Q1 . iiurmzna t ennitt '74-'75 Loreena came to B. H this fall from Morden, and became an important addition to Residence. Loreena has many outstanding characteristics. She has excelled in sports, as well as contributed some of her fantastic musical ability to the entertainment of the school. Everyone looked forward to Prayers on Fridays, when Loreena would perform for us. Her future will include studying at the School of Fine Arts in Banff. where she intends to develop her outstanding musical and dramatic talents. at-rl' aruline ibirkup '74-'75 Caroline came in the middle of the fall from Swan River, and entered Residence. In spite of her late arrival, in the academic field she did very well. Caroline has a concern for animals, as can be exemplified by the time she was found in the Glass Passage. putting strips of paper on the windows to prevent the birds from flying into them. Her immediate plans are to work in B.C. but we certainly hope that Manitoba can claim her again. hitb rEIJel1ran'7 -'75 Edith came sprinting into Balmoral Hall in the fall of l973. Shortly after Christmas Edith was elected House Head of Craig Gowan. ln every P. T. class she was seen in a different pair of track shoes, that were two sizes too big. Edith has the enthusiastic ability of speech that could never be overcome. She was elected Sports Captain for '74-75 and has worn out everyone's track shoes. Next year Edie plans to roam the hills of Scotland. Zipnne ibuirier '74-'75 Lynne was a Residential student from Thunder Bay. One of Lynne's nicest qualities was the spontaneous smile that she wore so much of the time. This remarkable characteristic became contagious for those around her. Lynne managed to keep smiling in spite of the mammoth phone bills she would receive at the end of each month. Any conversation with Lynne inevitably contained her favorite phrase You'se Guys . Lynne is hoping to enter into Social Work, where we know she will excel. i 9 5115311112 513211133111 71 75 Suzanne came all the way from Switzerland to complete her secondary schooling in her home town. We talked about the events of the past and it has inspired me to briefly relate our friendship. The first time that I saw Donna, she was pushing her baby brother through the park in a baby carriage. We both nodded dubiously at each other and went our own ways. I wondered what she was like - she was very skinny with sunbleached hair. We were in school together and we exchanged visits to each other's houses to do homework. Donna and I became best friends . The friendship grew easily because our outlooks on everything were so similar. Often, it was uncanny. Neither of us had influenced each other up to this point, but the opinions and morals we had formed individually were strongly united. About a year after the first meeting. we had a huge fight. l had an acute inferiority complex at the time, and Donna couldn't stand the responsibility of boosting my morale any longer. We swore at each other and I threw my tuna sandwich in her face. Last summer, we began talking to each other again. We had lots of exciting and depressing times. We both love to learn and we did lots of things to expand our minds like getting ourselves books to read. We were both halfway through the Communist Manifesto when I made the decision of coming to Balmoral Hall. We really miss each other. I often recall what I said to her three years ago, From now on, something tells me we will be great friends for a long time - maybe for the rest of our lives. A Grade I2 Student WA IT ING F OR YESTERDAY Lying here alone, my heart reaches out to the spacious world. But like a message unheeded. I was rejected: and he is gone. My passive being is filled with anxiety and contemplation. Individuals walking in a daydream waiting for a response, an unveiling, But like myself are rejected, and once again, he is gone. Time elapses, and still the lonely expectation of someone to share my solitude and confusion with hurls on, because he is gone. I will restrain and wait for yesterday, because tomorrow never comes - and he is gone. Lynn Poirier Grade 12 Susan Roblin Grade 8 A TRIP TO Tl-IE PLANETARIUM On February 20th. Grades Five and Six of Balmoral Hall went to the Planetarium. The Planetarium was presenting, A Star Called Sun . They told us about the sun and its sun spots. They also pointed out the different stars. One interesting thing they told us is what happens when two protons go together. The answer to this is one of the protons turns negative, joins with other protons to form helium. This results in a great discharge of energy from the sun. We learned some interesting facts about the sky and the stars which belong in the sky. l enjoyed this field trip very much and I am sure all the other kids in Grades Five and Six enjoyed this presentation also. Margaret Edwards Grade 6 THE CANDLE Here I sit, just before bed, watching my candle. It's amazing to sit and watch it flicker The way the flame grows and shrinks makes me feel warm - as if I don't have a care in the world. I sit and watch it burn: slowly, the candle disappears as each drip of wax flows downward. Soon the candle will die. The flame will burn out. The light flares and then it is dark. I wonder where my candle has gone . . Christy Coughlin Grade 8 I fl C I I SHOULD HAVE FOUND TIME I should have found time to be kind to you. I should have found time to care about you. As I looked into the water, I saw a reflection by the light of the midnight moon. The reflection had a kind heart it was a boy. He knelt down, and whispered in my ear. His words were soft and sweet. His hands were of masculine makings. I rose. turned, and fell into the arms of my love. The moon shone bright as we stood there embraced in the light of its beams. We were in love. If the world was to fall, it could - we wouldn't care both of us were there. It was perfect. By the skating rink, on the east, were the toboggans sliding down the crunchy snow. Oh, how it crackled! All the girls and boys were screaming for joy, so that you could not hear the music playing for the skaters. The ice was cold and tingly as you fell on it. There was snow on the ice and just a few skating marks It looked like a lonesome skating rink but really it was a magic carpet with diamonds laying on it, reflecting the yellow rays of the sun. That's how beautiful it was to be on that skating rink. Andrea Reyes Grade 5 TOBOGGANING On the toboggan slide, the snow was soft and crackling when the sled or toboggan slid over it going faster and faster. You're pulling your sled up the hill when you start tumbling down, down, until you reach the bottom. Open your eyes and you find yourself lying in a bunch of glistening, soft snow. You're wet and tired, still out of breath, then pick up your toboggan and make another try. Sarah Murphy Grade 5 -ra'-S. ffvfn. W? I Q' r 03437, g - , i wgq.3,, :S . I ig:A.E,? This was a very involved task, since it included everyone in Grades six to one. Auditions were held before Christmas, and double casting for the lead roles was done at this time. Because the operetta was to be staged for two nights, the main leads played their own role one night. and could elect to sing in the chorus the next. What a time we had! Hectic rehearsals, frantic costume round-ups, and many hours of class time--- these were all a part of our production. At last the opening night was upon us! Despite last minute jitters, the cast performed beautifully to a very appreciat- ive audience. Broadway here we come! All the Junior School teachers were more than helpful. and a special thank- you to Loreena Mcliennitt. our charming accompanist. HIGHLA ND DA NC ING The Highland Dancing Club has been a great success this year. The girls were enthusiastic and co-operative. They learnt such dances as the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. Both cast and production crew co-operated in a moving dramatic experience. This play was about an old man Lemmy . who wanted to be arrested because his only home was the park bench He thought that by being arrested he might have a place to live. All through the play, he tries to get arrested by doing a variety of things, until he notices everyone pitied him instead. Then, he thought that he should start 1 new life, since winter was coming and it was getting too cold to stay outside. One day, while just loitering on the sidewalks, he fLemmyj was finally arrested. BON VOYAGE September 28th 5:00 p. m. and all systems go, well nearly all, our flight was delayed two hours. We arrived in rainy London and took off in groups to set the town on fire. The currency was a bit of a problem at first, but nevertheless we worked our way around it, we never bought a thing! We travelled by coach to Southhampton and there we boarded the S. S. Nevasa. After our lunch of cold pork pie, we explored our new home. There was a games deck, ping-pong room, movie theatre, library and a large comfortable sitting room. During the first few days of our cruise. some of us experienced our first case of sea-sickness. Thank the Lord for those little blue pills. A revolution in Lisbon broke out as a result of the take-over in government. This changed our plans and we unexpect- edly found ourselves visiting the apes and touring Saint lxlichael's cave in Gibralter. After everyone was rounded up, we set sail for sunny Spain and arrived in Almeria the next morning. . Everyone from the town was down to greet the ship. Here we toured a beautiful, historical castle, cathedral, and a bull fighting ring. We also had time for shopping and a quick dip in the Mediterranean. That night. after watching the flamingo dancers. some of us decided to go ashore for some ice-cream and pastry. We then sailed to Palma on the Island of Majorca. ln the afternoon you could find all the B. H. girls, drinking the well water which promised marriage. Next port of call was Ajaccio. We took a breath-taking bus ride up to a small village in the mountains. In the afternoon we visited Napoleon's birth place, shopped, and as we did in every port, ate ice-cream. The highlight of our day was hearing, I Shot The Sheriff and a lady imitating a chicken on the radio. Naples was the place that made everyone's eyes spin. If we weren't avoiding the traffic, it was the dirty old men. While docked in Naples, we were fortunate enough to spend a day in Rome. Pompeii, and on the beautiful isle of Capri. During one of our off-shore days, a deck hockey tournament took place. B. H. QNelson Dormj won over the other twenty-five dorms, and were named the Deck Hockey champs and received individual sports awards. When we arrived back in London, we had a terrific tour of all the historical buildings, which included the Tower of London. Houses of Parliament, The Old Curiosity Shop. Buckingham Palace, and many other fascinating places. The cruise was a truly educational experience that I'm sure none will ever forget. Many wonderful friends were made, including a few romances. I must admit you guys helped me immensely and inspired me. Ballater has many promising athletes, and loads of confidence to keep Ballater on top for many years ahead. I would like to give a special thanks to our House Lieutenant. Margot Bridgett and Nicola Murray who always stepped in and helped me. Next year will he another winning year, so keep your socks up. The spirit in the House was just great. We had many ups and downs in our winning streak this year, but that's okay because we know we are the best - win or lose. I'm glad to say the Senior Braemarites won the 4XIl0 relay again. We've won that one for three years straight! Thanks go to Karen, Suzanne, Katie. and Mike. This year we added something new to our House: Braemar buttons and T-shirts. Everyone seems to like them. I would like to thank Jeanette for designing the picture on the front of both items. Our Juniors did really well this year. I would like to thank Alix Banfield. our Junior House Lieutenant. You did a great job, Alix. At this time. I would also like to thank Karen Purves. She helped me along when our House was down and was an excellent Senior House Lieutenant. I'm sure you must all agree. Thanks, Karen. 'X ' 5 M' Dear Craig Gowan: It just seems like yesterday that the first lxlonday morning meeting was in session. With people coming and going, and me not knowing what I was really supposed to be doing. To put it mildly. this year has been quite an experience for me! I have to apologize to Iunior School for not being able to go to their games. As it worked out, the time schedules just didnt coincide. I'm sorry for missing them. l'd like to thank you all for supporting the House as well as you did. The Seniors were split down the middle: half coming in late, while the others had been waiting at the English door ten minutes early! I know Math competed with House games, but after the equations were solved everyone made it to the gym. I think everyone enjoyed the body contact sports more than anything else. Although we didn't win often, we were feared out on the floor. Who could ever forget the time a soccer ball knocked someone to the ground? I'd like to thank Liz who filled in when I wasn't there. She was a great help to me, and I don't know what I would have done without her. Good luck next year to you all. However, we placed second in the zone Small School Playoffs and both losses were by narrow margins. The whole team played very well under the pressure which developed in many of our close games. Those who sat on the bench for most of the key games were most co-operative and greatly appreciated by the rest of the team. Our coach John Lim, was always enthusiastic and encouraging, we greatly appreciated his efforts during the season. We realize how difficult it was to coach girls who were not always as attentative as they should have been. Last but not least thanks goes to Barb, who never failed in making us laugh when things were down. Sveniur ZBa5ketl1allZ!Ieam This year B. H. produced one of the best basketball teams it has had in years. lr The Senior Team had a prosperous season, winning their Small School Tournament and Zones 4 and 12 Playoffs. This victory awarded the team with the opportunity to represent these zones in the Provincial Small School Tournament. Here ff we suffered our first loss, to the Sprague team. Qi The team included eight girls, some with little or almost no background of basketball, but with capacity and will to ll develop a remarkable amount of skill through just one season. . And most important. we had a lot of fun doing it. Many thanks to our coach, Holly Reader, for making this season a satisfying experience. 1 Q , BACK ROW: Nicola Murray, Sheila Buchanan, Lori Jacks, Dawn Goodwin, Kelly Craig, Anna Cholakis. This was a rebuilding year for the Junior Volleyball Team, having lost their capable Grade Nine players. The team was not successful as far as the game victories went, but the players certainly attained a high level of determination and sportsmanship. Each girl on the team gained valuable experience in competitive sports. John Lim did a commendable job, coaching us. Junior Blazers had a very frustrating season ---- frustrating to the extent that the team always played hard and never quite won that all important game. Although the winnings were few, the Blazers certainly were the fastest on the court. We wish to express our thanks to John Lim, our coach. who patiently guided us through the season. Congratulations for surviving another season. O Q I Qpurts eport 5 Near the end of the school year I discovered from numerous girls, who were 'serving' their first year at B. H. , that they were unclear as to what the name 'prefect' implied. Unfortunately a clarification of the prefects positions should have been provided at the beginning of this school year. In this report I would like to clarify my particular position and evaluate the intra-mural house program. My position as Sports Head was to provide leadership, enthusiasm, and overall planning of the intramural sports program. I was to co-ordinate the program with the assistance of the four House Heads. The purpose of the program was to provide everyone with an opportunity to keep physically fit, develop sportsmanship, and also to act as an outlet for frustrations when every thing was down. This year the intra-mural program took place for an hour every Monday and Wednesday lunch hour. Personally, I think the time slot was a hindrance as it limited the types of sports we were able to play. Regardless of this, the program appeared to go smoothly and it was successful. I know a lot of Senior girls grumbled all the way out to the field, but as soon as they became involved in the game, you could see them smile, before they remembered that they weren't supposed to be having a good time. The Juniors enthusiasm was great and I hope they retain it all through Senior School. I would like to thank all of the House Heads who tolerated Lets get organized . I think you all did a great job. Lastly, but not leastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Harper for helping me through the year and more importantly for encouraging the expansion of my scope for understanding. s . This year has been a major adjustment for all of us. Residence life was totally different from anything we'd ever experienced. Rules to accept. some which we thought were fairly ridiculous - but however ridiculous. we knew that they were necessary. Some of us can be proud of ourselves for having stuck together in bad times, which made the good times even better. We learned how to deal with people we lived, studied. and socialized with. when the feelings were tense. For all the complaining we did from September to June. we can still look back and say, Hey - remember the time we did so and so?? ln the future we'll reminisce about 74!'75 in Balmoral Hall Residence and think, Remember how simple life was when all our decisions were made for us? There are a lot of benefits of living in residence - but you won't appreciate them until you leave - but that's the way it always is. lt's a poor substitute for a close family, but the lessons you learned about life and people during the year, surpass any and every lesson you'll learn elsewhere in such a short period of time. After the introductions, Mr. Kenney took charge of the formal part of the afternoon. Silver spoons, engraved with the date were presented to each graduate. This signified that we were now members of the Alumnae. Later we proceeded to the lower garden where each girl imprinted her initial in the fresh cement, thus completing the tradition of other years on such a day. Refreshments were served in the dining room. The Grade Twelve class had officially become part of the Alumnae of Balmoral Hall. Www 3+ 1 ' , It JL. - gi Q if-4 5. ima?
