To be chosen for Area All-State, you must be one of the best musicians in a nine county area. This year’s concert was held at the Sartoga Junior High School on November 21,1981. Students who were chosen were; Kathy Green for Orchestra, Jim McHale for Symphonic Band, and Alison Ramsey, John Salvato, Donna Schroter and Steve Shaw for Festival Choir. Row 1: A. Ramsey, J. McHale. Row 2: D. Schroter, K. Green, J. Salvato, S. Shaw. Greg Willmott was selected this year for the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. Seniors vote for the classmate that they feel exemplifies the characteristics of good citizenship and service to the school and community. Then the faculty chooses the student from the top two finalists. Greg has received $25 certificate and a gold medal for this accomplishment. 54 A New Friend Americans to be much more liberal than we are. Students are casual, lighthearted and loud. I enjoy their sense of humor, their ability to take criticism and their ability to endure being laughed at. The students have been extremely friendly and hospitable and have made me feel at home. This is an enormous compliment to the students and their school. Keep it up! This year looks extremely promising. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped to develop this attitude in me, especially the McNamara family who have been absolutely great hosts. Thanks. Hi, I’m Jac. I’m from Cape Town in sunny South Africa. I live on the coast, so during the summer I spend much time at the beach. Even though Cape Town is very alive, I can see myself enjoying quiet Ballston Spa this year. My first week and a half here has been a period of important discoveries about America and its people. It has also been a time of tremendous adjustments. The biggest adjustment I had to make was to the weather. I left 90 degrees Fahrenheit and sun scorched beaches to arrive in snow packed Ballston Spa. I had never seen snow before and therefore the enjoyment of its presence has been immense. I have attempted sledding and cross country skiing and have enjoyed both. I suppose I have been acting like a five year old in the snow — but it has been fun. The place to learn about people and their attitudes is in school. At this tremendous school I have found % 55 Girls’ and Boys’ State To be selected for Girls’ State you must first be recommended by the faculty and the principal. The next step is to prepare a resume and be interviewed by the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, only one girl out of the three that the school recommends is chosen. This year’s finalist was Jeri Hammond who went to Keuka College for a week this summer. While there, mythical states were set up, political parties were formed and elections were held. This year Jason Fernau, Greg Willmott, and Ber-nie Fragomeni were chosen to represent our school when they went to Morrisville College for Boys’ State. They were chosen in their Junior year by the faculty at Ballston Spa High. While at Morrisville they set up artificial states, cities, and counties. It was not all work and no play, however, the boys enjoyed many sports activities as well. Color Guard Row 1: T. North, T. North, K. Whitcher (Capt.), V. Hayden, L. Kerwood, J. Brown. Row 2: K. Ladd 61 Business Club The Business Club spends a good part of each year participating in fund-raising activities. We sell approximately $5,000 worth of merchandise which yields a sizeable profit. This profit helps finance various field trips to the Empire State Plaze, the state capital, Motor Vehicles, the Egg, and the state museum. Future plans include completion of a follow-up study of former Ballston Spa High School business graduates. We would like to treat them to an open house. The school year is ended with a dinner banquet and awards ceremony. iwSt Row 1: D. McCumber, S. Older, C. Carlson, J. Schock, D. Putcher, K Brewster, M. McCumber, M. Komar, D. Poitras, D. Kenyon, D. We started out the year without an advisor or a company representative. It has been a year of constant work and setbacks. We couldn’t have made it through the year without the help of many people. We would like to thank the following people: Mr. Paul Perrault for taking us to the workshop in Rochester and for encouraging us; Mrs. Mary Skocylas for designing the cover; Mrs. Ruth Wilson for always putting up with us; Mrs. Irene Schallehn for the use of her home and turkey; Laurie Stevens and the subscription staff for helping us; Heidi Engel, Darren Barnes, Tom Baker, and Leif Zurmuhlen for their photographic work; Mr. Dick Himmel for helping us meet our final deadline; Mrs. Gayle O’Bryan for finally becoming our advisor. The spirit contest officially began with the rowdy Juniors screaming their way into first place. Surprisingly the Sophomores clinched the link contest after selling a tremendous amount of links. That night the traditional bonfire took place with the Hudson Falls dummy going up in flames. Saturday’s game was preceded by the Homecoming parade. The first minutes of the game were marked by Todd Coulter’s interception which led to our first and only touchdown. This left Ballston with a 6-0 victory over our Homecoming opponents. At half time Lisa Cardinali announced each class’ queen and court. Robyn Handy announced the results of the float contest, with the Seniors taking their well deserved victory. 74 75 The senior float — their first and final triumph. Debbie and Mike ride along. A Homecoming 78 V-I-C-T-O-R-Y Everyone dances to the music of Fair Play. Some people enjoy a break from dancing. Andy and Norma dance the night away. The Sounds of Christmas Mrs. Bruno sings along with the chorus. Scott Knowlton plays the cello. These talented singers have the spotlight all to themselves. 82 Gary Wilson and David Grose concentrate on their music. The sounds of the chorus echo throughout the auditorium. What would a concert be without the flutes? The woodwinds’ music adds to the enchantment of Christmas. 83 The Spirit of Christmas The day before Christmas vacation this year was again spent singing Christmas Carols, watching movies and playing chess. Michael Morgan, an alumnus of Ballston Spa High School, now a disc jockey for 92 FLY, played records in the gymnasium. Everyone agreed that this was a joyous way to start off Christmas vacation. Mrs. Wayand jokes with Mark Hersh. 84 92 FLY’s Michael Morgan. The Angels: Jimmy and Corky. Many girls were caught under the mistletoe. There were many activities including chess and computer games Mrs. Bruno and the chorus gave us the sounds of Christmas. ®f|C Crucifer of 3Huo Chris Moore and Holly Adams Mike, Steve, and Andy Andy Grose For this year’s fall production co-directors Harry Smith and Donald Mitola chose the Sherlock Holmes mystery-drama, “The Crucifer of Blood.” Although more people attended the six performances than any other play in three years, the show still managed to finish in the red. Lead roles were performed by Andy Grose, Mike Johnson, Chris Moore, Holly Adams, Terry Collins, and Yuri Waschenko. The cast also included: Kathy Dobson, Megan Donahoe, Steve Ferguson, Lee Forshey, and Jenna Grose. The youthful cast did an excellent job, as did a strong backstage crew. Ballston Spa should look forward to at least several more years of superior theatrical entertainment. Holly Adams and Mike Johnson 87 Sports Budget 1982 We all remember that this year’s sports budget was voted down twice. Mr. Spensieri spent a good deal of his summer fighting for sports at Ballston Spa. We wanted to know more about this important issue, and we felt you would too. Question: Why was Mr. Michael Spensieri so involved in this issue? Answer: Mr. Spensieri participated in the sports programs at Ballston Spa while he was growing up and wanted his children to have the same athletic opportunities that he enjoyed. He has also spent several years coaching at Ballston — from Pop Warner Football to Varsity Football. Mr. Spensieri felt that without sports the morale of the students, as well as the faculty would be quite low. He also believed that in time the community would have regretted what had happened. Question: Why did the sports budget fail to pass the first two times it was voted on? Answer: There are several answers to that question. The whole Nation is in a state of recession and money is tight — people have to cut down somewhere. Unfortunately the only place that people can exhibit any control over their taxes is at the local school budget. According to Mr. Spensieri, the “school has to take the brunt of it.” Mr. Spensieri, however, accredits the first two failures to “voter apathy.” People do not feel that their vote is worth anything. Even after 1500 people signed petitions only 1200 people voted. Question: Why did the sports budget finally pass the third time? Answer: The community realized the consequences of their actions. The sports budget finally passed due to the efforts of many. A meeting with the parents of all students involved in sports took place, from then on the ball was rolling. Among other things, phone calls were made to voters to urge them to get out and vote. Rides were also offered to the poles and petitions were circulated. A special thanks to Mr. Hugh Hollowood, Ann Griffen and Chris Cooney. “We are fortunate to have people like these in our school district,” commented Mr. Spensieri. 88 SPORTS 89 Varsity Football Row 1: M. This year’s varsity football team overcame a slow start, won its last five games, and finished in a three-way tie with Gloversville and Johnstown for the Foothills Council Championship. Rebounding from a sub-par 1980 campaign, the team finished with an overall record of 6-2, a Foothills Council slate of 5-1, posted four shutouts, and was ranked 17th in a New York State football poll. After losing two of their first three games by a total of four points (a 9-6 defeat in a non-league contest at Whitesboro and a 7-6 overtime setback to Johnstown sandwiched around a 27-0 thrashing of South High), the Scotties turned things around. Under the direction of head coach Ron Ravena and his assistants, Charles “Butch” Becker and “Skip” Spensieri, the team finished the year by trouncing Glens Falls 26-6, blitzing Niskyauna of the Suburban Council 41-0, drubbing Gloversville 36-8, and blanking both Queensbury (25-0) and Hudson Falls (6-0). Ballston’s victory shocked undefeated Gloversville. The squad’s success, according to Mr. Ravena, was due to a total team effort. The offense, behind a hard-working front line, excellent running game, and timely passing attack, rolled up 173 total points, while an aggressive, hard-hitting, and finely-tuned defense gave up just 30. Ballston’s biggest win of the year came at the expense of Gloversville as the Scotties’ defense not only shut down Gloversville’s high-powered offense, but scored three touchdowns. A A look of apprehension from John Mevec Chris Cooney drops back for the pass. J.V. Football The Junior Varsity football team had a tremendous 1981 campaign. They were Foothills Council Co-Champions along with Gloversville. Their record was 7-0-1, overall, league record was 5-0-1. The defense gave up only 48 points while the offense scored 150. Row 1: S. Their record was 0-4-2, under the direction of Mr. DeLaurie and Mr. Pemrick. They tied Gloversville and Scotia. A key injury to the team was Eugene Wethington, quarterback, who was lost for the year to a fractured wrist. 93 Varsity Field Hockey Row 1- K Welsh, R. Hartwick, E. Flatley, A. VanBuren, L. The Varsity Field Hockey team’s record was 3-9 in the league and 7-10 overall. The Varsity team had a very strong defense, thanks to the good playing of center halfback Sharon Older, sweeper Chris Walsh, and goalie Sue Stickles. Sharon Older was named to the All-star team in the Foothills Council. Eileen Flatley and Chris Walsh received Honorable Mention. The Varsity team is losing 10 seniors but will have 6 players returning next year. 94 J.V. Field Hockey Row 1: L. Thomas, M. Danison, L. Hughes, A. LaBuzzetta, D. Farins, N. Spaziani, R. Rich, N. Field Hockey team ended their season with a 1-5-2 record in the league and 4-6-2 record overall. Returning from last year were 3 players. Three freshmen also helped to make up part of the team. Lauren Thomas, Karyn Glowacki, Lisa Smith, Annette LaBuzzetta and Margaret Danison were outstanding players. 95 Bruce Wescott and Todd Mabb have an outstanding future in football. They were named to the Saratogian Dream Team, along with fellow team member Greg Willmott. Todd Mabb (Co-Captain) was named to the All State Team — First team-defense. Bruce Wescott was named to the All State Team — Second team-offense. Todd Mabb and Bruce Wescott 96 Cross Country Ballston Spa’s Cross Country teams showed great improvement this year. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams performed well. Their crowning achievement was finishing the year with a second place finish in Section II.
