BALLSTON SPA HIGH SCHOOL s In this year of our nation's bicentennial everyone is looking to the past. It seems only natural, then, that this book look back too. In comparing the events of 1976 with those of 1776, we see that only methods and morals have changed. The goal has remained basically the same . . . independence. In America today, as in years past, young and old alike are seeking some form of freedom. It is for this reason that we named our 1976 yearbook, “Don’t Tread on Me”. It ties the spirit of today with the spirit of yesterday. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction..... Faculty.......... Yearbook Feature .. Activities....... Yearbook Feature . Clubs ........... The spirit of the American Revolution which made the colonists willing to defend their rights as human beings is still alive today. This spirit was made visible on the picket signs of the teachers of the Ballston Spa Education Ass’n. as they struck in defense of their rights in September. The Board of Education and the teachers had spent months in collective bargaining efforts. When school started and the bargaining had not borne fruit, the sessions ground to a halt and no progress was forseen. The teachers voted to make a dramatic appeal to the Board by withholding their services, an act of civil disobedience. After several days of sorrow and suffering, the Board and the teachers sat down again at the bargaining table and were able to resolve their differences. Both sides agree that the rights of the individual as guaranteed by the Constitution are precious. They all agree that, under the Constitution, we must see that fair laws are passed by the legislature and that all decent citizens obey such laws. It is their solemn hope that we can keep the spirit of America alive, not by conflict, but by sincere cooperation. 32 “The Walkout” Our Bicentennial Year In this bicentennial year a number of news items developed that are worth recording for posterity. For convenience, we have grouped them in six major categories as they apply. The six categories are: Statewide News, Nationwide News, Worldwide News, School News, Songs, and Motion Pictures. On the Worldwide scene, the deaths of several world leaders made news in 1975-76. The Prime Minister of The People’s Republic of China, Chou En Lai, died of natural causes in Peking in early January while Spain’s head man, Gene-ralisimo Francisco Franco succumbed to a heart ailment after a long illness. Finally, Argentine leader, Juan Peron passed away. U.S. President Gerald Ford visited China this year for a summit conference with Chinese officials. He brought his family along for' the island hopping trip through Indochina. Movie stars Liz Taylor and Richard Burton made news when they remarried each other in Israel in 1975. Political strife arose in Africa as a conflict began in Angola. Also this year, amateur athletes representing countries from all over the world will meet in the winter and summer Olympics to be held in Insbruck, Austria and Montreal, Canada respectively. On the home front, economists were jubilant in ’75 as the stock market rallied and the recession declined. History was made in Philadelphia, PA this year as the Liberty Bell was moved to its new home in the Bicentennial Pavillion next to Independence Hall. Violence ripped the nation in the wake of numerous attempts on the President's life. Sarah Jane Moore and Lynette Squeaky” Fromm were both arrested in two separate incidents involving attempted assina-tions. Doctors in California went on the rampage in protest of increasing malpractice insurance premiums. The first day of the new year brought a statewide doctor slowdown” in California. The federal minimum wage was increased in 1976 to $2.30 per hour. Tax payers all over the nation were relieved to hear of a cut in federal income taxes this year. In an oddity, the U.S.S. Kennedy was rammed by another American ship in the Mediterranean Sea on the late President's Birthday. Finally on the national level, the Dallas Cowboys made NFL history this year by becoming the first team ever to make it to the Super Bowl from a Wild Card spot. The Cowboys met the Pittsburg Steelers in the NFL classic. On the statewide scene, twelve Schenectady teachers were jailed for contempt of court after refusing to obey a court injunction to return to classes from their strike. An area dentist and his wife were lost in the wiles of Canada when their light plane went down near Moose River. Adams, NY was buried under five feet of snow in early January as New York State has seen more snow this year than in the past three years. New York State legislators came under fire in '76 for their alledged involvement in a nursing home scandal. Governor Carey raised the state gasoline tax while fuel prices remained fairly stable at approximately 55 per gallon. High level talks took place between state and federal officials in attempts to garner some federal funds to bail New York City out of its financial straits. The nation’s largest city came very close to default this year as the federal government refused to supply the needed money. Turning to school events, good ol’ BSHS welcomed Thomas Bruno Pedersen as a foreign exchange student from Denmark. Congratulations were in order for the 14 students from 34 In A Nutshell Balston who won Regent’s Scholarships this year. The winners were: Larry Grose, Tqd Bayer, Tim McCanty, Joe Patterson, Steve Urso, Patty Caruso, Kevin Albritton, Patti Anderson, Mark Quinn, Betty Abel, Carol Friedman, Robert FaV-rell, Sandy Engett, and Sue Richard. BSHS was pleased to aquire the services of Mr. Peter Pid-geon as a mathematics teacher. For the first time in years, the Media Center became a place to work quietly. Under the Iron Hand of Mrs. Pat Davis, the center has become a functional learning and information center. School life was shattered in early September when the teachers went out on strike. For the complete story, refer to the special feature. The Walkout . The apple cart was again upset when Mr. Toussaint left his post as assistant principal to take another position in the school svstem. Under pressure from the teachers, the Superintenaent ot Schools appointed Mr. Pemrick and Mrs. Seibert acting assistants. Just before Christmas the school was blessed with a permanent assistant. His name is Mr. Paul Perreault. Much to the chagrin of the student body, the administration has changed the rules concerning study halls. The new rules state that Freshmen and Sophmores must report to in-class study halls while Juniors and Seniors must report to any area that is supervised by a teacher and stay there for the entire period. BSHS got a new basketball coach this year in Mr. John Melander. By the time this went to print, the team was already showing a definite improvement over last year. The bane of most students’ existence was the re-numbering of classrooms. Normally, it is only the Freshmen who are lost the first day of school but this year all were hard pressed to find their homerooms under the new number system Most students were jubilant about the decision to dispense with mid-term exams this year. The decision came in the wake of a ruling that no students would be allowed time off when not taking an exam. Finally, Tom Knapik, a student at BSHS tried to qualify for the Oylmpic Speedskating Team this year. Tom made a good showing but failed to make the team this year. Tom avenged his loss by winning the Eastern States Championship the following week. Do you remember these flicks? The festivities began at South Street school where each class and its float met to make the traditional march through town to the football field. Spirit was high as each class cheered their way through the crowd-lined streets. The tension and anticipation grew strong as half-time neared and the winners were to be announced. Finally the time came and a large roar came from the crowd as Jim Goslin announced the seniors victoious. Taking second place were the highly spirted sophomores. Third and fourth places were taken by the juniors and freshmen respectively. Darlene Mitchell, president of the senior class accepted the silver urn which is given to each victorious class. Everyone seemed to know the game would go our way as Bruce Jaynes ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the first play from the line of scrimmage. The Scotties continued to fight hard throughout the game and beat Cohoes by an impressive margin of 39-20. 38 The 1975 Homecoming Queens and escorts were: Seniors: Maureen Kelley and Chuck Ure Juniors: Donna Pagano and Russ Nowhitney Sophomores: Paulette Waring and Don Ure Freshmen: Monique Westervelt and Bob VanWie Our Friendship Will 42 Never Cease This year Ballston Spa School District will be losing a valuable member of its faculty. Mr. Scott, our well-known athletic director will retire after thirty-three years of dedicated service to our school. Mr. Scott came to our school in 1940 as a physical education teacher and in 1967 he became the athletic department head. Over the years he has reached such goals as head coach af football, basketball, baseball, track and every other sport which has taken place at our school. Mr. Scott is known for more achievements and accomplishments than anyone that has ever been associated with B.S.H.S. One of his greatest honors came when our school's teams were named after him, the Ballston Scotties. Mr. Scott's retirement from our school will be a great loss to the entire student body, faculty, and everyone that knew him. We wish Mr. Scott good luck always and great thanks for everything from everyone in Ballston Spa High. The mark that Bill Scott has left upon Ballston Spa Central Schools, the community and the entire area will never be surpassed. I consider it a great honor and priveledge to have been associated with him. Our friendship will never cease.” Richard L. Thomas 43 In The Pursuit Of Knowledge Just An Olde-Fashioned Christmas Despite the wintry conditions the 1975 Christmas Dance was a huge success. Approximately seventy couples attended and danced to the great music performed by the Dick Toste Trio. Everyone enjoyed a chat with Santa Claus delightfully played by Mr. Pemrick. At ten o’clock Santa announced that Cindy VanWie escorted by Bill Johnson was the 1975 Christmas Queen. 46 47 Freedom Is The Right To Choose We Chose B.O.C.E.S. The B.O.C.E.S. program has become very popular with high school students. It provides them with an alternative to college after high school. Sixty seniors and seventy-five juniors from Ballston are currently taking advantage of this program. They may take courses in: Agriculture, Automotive trades, Building trades, Business Distributive Ed., Electro Mechanical Trades, Food Services, Metal Cutting, Fabrication trades, and Personal Services. 49 Dane Visits Land Of Opportunity Visiting America in its Bicentennial Year was Thomas Bruno Pederson from Denmark. He is the son of H.P.L. and Anna Margrete Bruno Pedersen and has three brothers ages 16,19 and 23. Some of Tom’s hobbies include sailing, water skiing, skiing, and diving. Aside from these activities Tom is very involved in school affairs which keep him very busy. He has quite a heavy schedule taking French. Music Theory Harmony, Developmental Reading, Writing Workshop and Photography. Also he was forward on soccer team and played with much spirit and added much enthusiasm to the games. There is a big difference in our schools according to Tom. If he was back in Denmark he would have much more homework and hard work to do. There are also many more sports activities, sports and fun things to do in American high schools. B.S.H.S. will always carry fond memories of Tom and his year at Ballston Spa. 50 Seniors Whip WPTR Jocks It was an evening of fun at Ballston High as the senior boys took on the WPTR Jocks. The senior players performed well and went on to win the game. The senior class presented WPTR with a plaque and many thanks for their cooperation. 51 C.S.L. Works For Improvement Of School CSL is made up of elected leaders of the student body who are dedicated to improving the conditions of the school for the student body. The officers are; Jim Goslin—President, Dale Solotruck—Vice President, Marianne Farrar—Secretary, and Frieda Voh-ringer—Treasurer. CSL meets regularily to discuss the matters that it must decide upon and to think of ways to better our school. 53 Back at the beginning of the year, many a freshman did a double take when they saw a certain social studies teacher singing and danc-ng in his classroom. They must have wondered, What is this guy, some kind of nut?” If Dan Pemrick is a nut, the world needs more of his kind. Mr. Pemrick is possibly the most active teacher in BSHS. Besides his being a teacher and assistant vice-principal, he coaches the junior varsity football team, advises the senior class, advises the yearbook staff, advises confused students, chaperons school activities, and is a friend to many students as well as faculty members. All this doesn't seem to bother Mr. Pemrick as he always has a smile on his face and a congenial greeting on his lips. One can always find him hustling down the hall in pursuit of one of his endeavors. Many will attest to the fact that Mr. Pemrick has offered his private time to the activities of his student friends. For all these reasons, and many more, Mr. Pemrick has won the esteem of hundreds of citizens of the school community. Here’s to Dan Pemrick, often smiling, usually carefree, and always a beautiful person. 54 Senior Class Officers And Advisors: K. Federico—Treas., Mr. Pemrick—advisor, D. Mitchell—Pres., J. Bigelow—Sec., Mr. Hickey—advisor. Missing From Photo: M. Szablak—V. Pres. Equal Male Chauvanists The senior girls really proved themselves to equal the boys as they tied in a Girls vs. Boys basketball game which preceded the WPTR game. Coached by Tom Delancey, the girls showed their talent on the court as they dribbled and shot their way to a tie. 57 Dr. Rock Visits BSHS Clubs ... And The Band Played On 62 The Ballston Spa High School marching band gave the student body a real taste of the Bicentennial Spirit this year. Under the direction of Mr. Benuscak, The band spurred the football team on in tense situations. The crowds were afflicted with Revolution Fever” as they listened to the colonial marches that the band performed. 63 Hubbley Edits School Paper Cross Currents, Ballston Spa High School's newspaper is a busy at work during America’s bicentennial year. Advised by Mrs. Butcher and edited by Katny Hubbiey, Cross Currents tries to maintain the highest quality of journalism at Ballston High. The numerous reporters and other members of Cross Currents are among Ballston’s finest students. m McCanty Heads Yearbook Staff The yearbook office was packed to the rafters for most of the school year as editors worked diligently to finish the publication on time. The editors worked through the day and long into the night an several occasions. Imagine trying to wade through a mountain of photos and copy sheets!! A passer-by (Mr. Delaurie) was fearful that a fire would start because the typewriter was clicking so fast!! 5 editors and 2 advisors spent the summer in Rochester, NY. They were attending a yearbook workshop where they learned how to do the most professional job possible. Editor-in-Chief Tim McCanty admits that it is the hardest job he has ever undertaken. He agrees with his predecessors that his job is possibly the most grueling that the school offers. Honor Society Buys Juke Box The emblem of the National Honor Society is a keystone inscribed with the letters C.S.L.S. These letters stand for character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The keystone is symbolic of the strength that the latter provide. The society honors those who best personify the qualities that it supports. As president, it was the duty of Tom Knapik to conduct the semi-annual induction ceremony. However, as Knapik was away at a speedskating meet, vice president Pat Caruso took over. Once the membership was filled to a record 50 members, the society voted to purchase a Juke Box for the school system. The machine will be put in the student lounge and the proceeds will go to the Honor Society treasury. The money will eventaully be used for scholarships and capital for future investments. The society also aids the Red Cross Bloodmobile and sells refreshments at all basketball games. 66 Gillie Heads FBLA The New York State chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America is dedicated to the development of good, competent business leaders. Its members are trained to make decisions, interact with a group and assume a role as a leader. On the local level, the club is following the aims and goals of the state chapter very closely. During Cindy Gillie’s tenure as president, the FBLA has visited office buildings and community businesses. This year the club plans to visit the office buildings in Canada. The FBLA also donates their time, efforts and money to worthy community causes. They have a long history of community involvement. Jocks Serve Food The Ballston Spa Varsity Club is an elite group of outstanding athletes. Their purpose is to raise money for various needs connected with athletics. To do so. the club does everything from washing cars to television raffles. The biggest event that the club sponsors is the sale of food for the basketball games. The bulk of the money that comes from these affairs goes toward the purchase of awards such as trophys and varsity letters. Jim Becker, president of the club, tells us that in order to become a member of the club, one must have won at least two varsity letters, been nominated by the existing membership, and been elected by a % vote of the entire membership. Thanks to an efficient fund raising committee, the club has the largest bank account of all clubs and organizations at Ballston High. 68 Bobby Fischers Of Ballston High Webster defines chess as a board game for two players each of whom move 16 pieces according to fixed rules and tries to checkmate the other’s king. The chess club at Ballston High defines the same game as a challenging game of skill and wits. It has been said that a good match of chess is more physically exhausting than running a mile. This may or may not be true but we have it from a very reliable source that the game is great tun. The club's seven members take every opportunity to kill” their opponents and mentally destroy them. All we can say is good luck to them and we’ll try to stay out of their way lest we get rooked. 69 DeMicco To Be Wizard It is written that all the world is a stage and all the people merely players. If this were true it would be a welcomed change for the members of the drama club. These people are used to acting out scripts for hoardes of spectators. Each year the drama club presents a spring musical. This year they are doing The Wizard of Oz. Cast in the part of the wizard is John DeMicco. A seasoned performer, DeMicco should have no problem playing the bumbling imposter. The show will be directed by Mrs. Linda Lake. The sale price of tickets is always well worth the entertainment. 70 Wayand, Nanek Oversee Slopers In keeping with its quest to satisfy the wants and needs of the student body, Ballston Spa. High School has once again sponsored a ski club. The club takes trips to area ski slopes in search of the pleasures and perils of America's most popular winter sport. Mr. Wayand and Ms. Nanek, advisors to the club, act as chaperons and amateur instructors to the student slopers. Gagne, DeMicco Edit Magazine The Ballston Spa High School Literary Magazine instituted a dramatic change in their publication this year. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Miner, co-editors Dawn Gagne and John DeMicco have brought the magazine out of its infancy and into adulthood. The staff is most excited about their campaign to have faculty members as well as students contribute their literary and or artistic endeavors. As Art Editor, Kathy Hubbley has her work cut out for her in trying to decide which works to publish. In 1975-76, the staff will publish a Winter and a Spring edition. Both will be in portfolio form. Rankin and Company Fight Cancer Patty Rankin, as President of the Health Careers Club, led the club's drive to wipe out cancer by installing cancer pamphlet racks in various doctors’ offices. The Health Careers Club interests itself in all areas of the health field, from blood banking to caring for the mentally retarded. This year the club sponsored a Christmas party for the Saratoga County Infirmary. They also work as escorts and aides at the Ballston Spa Blood Bank, which they avidly support. Their efficient fund raising activities spurred the club to raise its annual scholarship from $50 to $100 which goes to a worthy member going on to a health related career. The club also visits area health facilities such as the Albany Medical Center where they saw the dental and audio clinics. 73 Clancy And Company Run Canteen Without the Service Club our school might not run with the efficiency it does. President Maureen Clancy did a great job at getting things done. Remember the pizza and coffee that was eaten at those cold football games. It was the service club that was running the canteen making and serving it to you. They also usher at all the school activities such as concerts and plays. And everytime you bought a notebook or pen at the bookstore you were waited on courtesy of the service club. They are always in there helping Mrs. McGinn run the bookstore with efficiency. The money that the service club raises each year is donated to a charity. 74 Musicians Promote Their Field A recent addition to the list of clubs and organizations at Ballston High was the Music Activities club. The group is composed of all students involved with the performing music groups such as band, orchestra, chorus etc. In the past the group has put on variety shows and other musicals. Advisor Carl Waldron does not foresee any such activities this year but the club is very active just the same. Their purpose is to promote music appreciation throughout the school district. As a part of this campaign, the group supplies funds to pay for the elementary students to visit music clinics and concerts. The club is governed entirely by the students, some of whom have been recognized for excellence on the state level. 75 D. Cobart, L. Thomas. M. Rouselle. P. Wilson. L. Brian. S. Hughes. P. Stevenson. The team proved to be much improved lacking only a few ingredients to become champions. 99 Freshmen Capture Title J. Vukis, P. Farrar, J. LaSpisa, R. Reisner, J. Matties, K. Slade, J. Tuller, C. The graduating seniors are: Bob Bradt, Tom Knapik, Tom Pederson, Pete Shaw, and Dave Wagner. 101 Betts, Sheridan Star In Golf Final standings in the Colonial Council show the Ballston Spa Golf Team in a tie for second place, though a championship season was expected. This standing was accomplished largely through the efforts of seasoned golfers such as seniors, Don Betts. Bill Sheridan, Kevin Albritton, Tim McCanty, and Rob Partridge. The golf team braved the brisk fall winds from early September to late October. At the end of the regular season the Class B sectionals were held. The Scotties placed second with Don Betts and Bill Sheridan qualifying for the Section II playoffs. With competition increasing as well as the number of schools participating, it is evident that golf is becoming a more popular sport among today’s youth. Congratulations are in order for the Ballston Spa Varsity Golf Team for a fine season. 102 Spirit Drives Hockey J. Bigelow, G. Jennings. C. Cornell. J. Stover. D. Boghosian. T. Monaco, D. Mitchell. The team faced a year of rebuilding and worked hard to make this a good season which they did. The team welcomed a new coach, Mr. Melander, who helped spirit them on to win. The team opened the season with an exciting win over Queensbury and went on to win quite a few more games. There were quite a few underclassmen on the team this year and with their improvement and practice this season next year’s team should prove to be an excellent one. Fragomeni, Murphy Lead J.V.’s J. A scrappy J.V. team full of desire and a winning enthusiasm made themselves well known in the league. Mr. Spensieri in his second year of coaching, has given the team the needed improvement for next years varsity level. 106 Freshmen Champs: A New Breed J. Hollowood. A Hauprich. G. Greco. Many of the girls were on the team last year which gave them a great advantage experience wise. Also there are no seniors on the team which means that the team will be even better next year. Coached by Miss Nanek the girls had an excellent record winning a majority of their games. The J.V. team even though it doesn't have quite as good a record, is very young and shows much promise for next year. 109 On Your Mark, Get Set, J w!Zw M Thfrri n n ‘acSha!!' n L acey’ J St0ver’ N Morse J Jurscak- N Flanders. Most of their meets were held at the Albany Armory or Union College. The girls team had an outstanding season this year winning at many of the meets. The team was effectively coached by Mr. Gerber and Mr. Scott. She is an excellent runner and a great teammate. Running the sixty yard dash in approximately 7.5 seconds she is one of the top sprinters in the area. She also holds the Colonial Council record in her events. Janie put forth such excellent effort last year that she went to the states. Not only is Janie active in track but she was on the hockey team in the fall.
