Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1975 volume:

A yearbook is more than a book you buy and look at once. A good yearbook should revive memories, good and bad, of things that happened while you were in school. This year's staff has tried to make this book something you can pick up 20 years from now and see that the years you spent at B.S.II.S. were good ones. And, in times when even tradition is changed or broken, we would like to keep some of the old customs. With that thought in mind, we named our yearbook “ Realms of Gold . The staff hopes that we have achieved our goals and that you are satisfied with your 1975 yearbook. Liz Goslin Kditor in Chief Much thanks to Mr. Sou key for the cover design which is taken from our class rings. Homecoming began in late September as classes began to construct their floats. Mountains of paper mache and tissue, miles of chicken wire, and gallons of paint were oiled on wagons and mixed with a little originality to form the most creative floats Ballston Spa has ever seen. Each class was out to prove that it was the best. Competition intensified during Homecoming week Posters covered ever wall, and nickles clinked as people bought links. On Friday. the school s foundation shook as each class tried to out shout the other classes. Saturday came and everyone nervously prepared for the H mecoming Parade. Each class proudly marched its float to the High School, hoping that they would be the winner. The classes packed the stands to join forces and cheer the Scotties on to victor). At halftime, CSL Homecoming Chairperson, Mazie Melander. announced the winner; the seniors! The seniors, then, paraded their winning float around the field. Once the chaos had ended, a powerful Ballston footle a 11 team rolled over Albany Academy. The entire Homecoming Week was topped off with a Sadie Hawkins Dance. Homecoming was a monstrous success, involving the entire student body. It will always be remembered. 15 REASERS COME TO HAUNT BSHS JS m Bobby socks, ponytails, DA s, and penny loafers abounded as Ballston High was invaded by the 50's. Greaser Day struck with more excitement than the school had ever seen. Gangs, reminiscent of Hell’s Angels, roamed the halls harassing the entire student body. Girls giggled and snapped their gum as they whispered about that “cute guy on the other side of the room. Judges secretly searched the building for the best greased guy, gal, and couple. Mrs. McCanty proudly accepted the Greaser Day’s “Dirtiest Saddle Shoe Award. The day was climaxed that night at the Greaser Dance. The gym rang with the sounds of Chubby Checkers, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, and many others. Johnie Denver and Wolfman Jim spun the greatest hits while the greasers bopped with their chicks. Contests, dancing and the fun of the 50’s made Greaser Day a day to remember. 17 18 SENIOR CLASS ANNOUNCES 1974 SNOW QUEEN Cuvle Rockwell, Senior Class President announces 1974 Snow Queen, Judy Dean, at the peak of the Christmas Dance festivities. SCHOLORSHIPFUND On the night of February 8, the high school gym was the sight of The Student Faculty Game Night. The games began at 6:30 and were not a blood battle, for everyone was out for a night of fun. First to play were the senior girls and the women faculty. The girls lost; the teachers were just too much for them. Then, the junior boys played the Middle School faculty. The students again lost to the bigger, more experienced players. The final game was a showdown between the Senior boys and the Senior High faculty. The students also lost due to an overloaded roster of 30 players. The faculty picked the seniors apart and easily won. All in all, the faculty-student games were a great success. The game was an all round triumph as over $400 was raised for the BSEA Scholarship Fund. A joint effort by everyone involved made it a night of fun. ?6 THE YEAR IN REVIEW Political pressure forced Richard Nixj as the 37th president of the United States. This year, we were fortunate in having a South American exchange student — Juan Carlos Santamarina. Chuck, as he is now called, is the son of Juan Carlos Santamarina and Estella de Santamarina. Chuck also has three sisters. Here, at Ballston Spa, Chuck has a regular senior schedule; taking such electives as Computer Math, Current Issues, and Writing Workshop. Already Carlos has found his place in our school society and has been actively involved in class, school, and athletic activities. Carlos sees many changes in culture and values, but he admits that school life in the United States is much like that in Argentina. The senior class and the school as a whole are grateful to the Rotary for the privilege of welcoming students like Carlos, and we look forward to greeting many more students from other countries in the future. 28 Crossing the Bar Tennyson Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep. Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. The senior class can't express the feeling of loss at the death of their classmates. But let us remember them as living human beings, who brought joy and warmth into our lives. It is in this memory that we dedicate this page to Joe Whitney, Keith Wemple. and Bill Moran. B.O.C.E.S. OFFERS STUDENTS AN ALTERNATIVE. With the increasing cost of going to college, vocational education is becoming an important factor in a high school education, B.O.C.E.S. provides an alternative to past-secondary education. There are seventy-two juniors, and forty-two seniors involved in the B.O.C.E.S. program. A vocation may be learned in many different areas. Course offerings are: Agriculture, Automotive trades. Building trades. Business Distributive Ed, Elect ro Mechanical Trades, Food Services, Graphic Arts, Health Services, Metal Cutting, Fabrication Trades, and Personal Services. A Senior in his or her second year of training may be recommended by the instructor to become part of the Vocational Industrial CO-OP. The V.I.C. program allows students to gain on the job experiences, several days a week, rather than going to B.O.C.E.S. Several of Balls-ton’s students are involved in this program. 31 32 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY HONORS STUDENTS WHO EXCEL. Twice a year the Honor Society inducts new members. A Council of faculty members select students who possess the traits of character, scholarship, service, and leadership. This is the only organization in B.S.H.S. that gives students recognition for their scholastic achievements. The Club earns money to donate to worth-while projects in the community. May the light of the National Honor Society candles glow eternally, for they symbolize morality. 33 STUDENT COUNCIL ATTEMPTS TO BRIDGE COMMUNICATIONS GAPS STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS: J l)i-Micco, P. It still represents a communication link between the students and the administration Their communication takes the form of relating complaints, suggestions and problems from the students to the administration However, the uniqueness of this group is measured by the fact that the communications lie on a two way street. I his year and in years to come, the administration will look to CSL to inform the students about policies and other areas of student interest. The two things that seperate Student Congress from the other school organizations are serv ice and participation Because CSL is not a fund raising organization. it can provide services to the students at the lowest price possible. In the area of participation and involvement. Student Congress has three goals I he first is to get the students more involved in the decision making groups of the school. The second is to become more active on affairs of the school. The last goal is to get involved in the community. This year a lot of progress has been made in all areas but the main concern of CSL is not merely the present but the future also. So we will always trv to do more for the students, adminsitration and the school itself Mark Fraser President, CSL end flutcbesscs MR GERBER MRS FORI AN MISS DUNLEAVY MR MCPHERSON 39 MR. Smith, Mike Fulmer, Cuyle Rockwell, Brien Hollowood, Joe Murphey, Tom Farrell, Phil Rourke, Mike Pratt, Dave Naske, Mike Haskal, Wayne Renolds, and Dan Bell. Why? Because being part of the community means participation in community affairs. And General Electric encourages this attitude, this time and talent contribution, through individual recognition of outstanding public service and selective program sponsorship and support. General Electric Company and its employees believe that a better community only happens when people work to make it that way.
