Dear Graduate, One reads daily of activism by today's youth. And, this is good. Unfortunately, some groups of young people—and some older ones as well—have been acting without having first conceived a plan consonant with the democratic process for achieving their goals. Such action impedes progress: it doesn't promote it. I hope that your years in the Ballston Spa Central Schools have instilled in you a desire to help America reach a more perfect realization of its ideals; namely, that every man live in peace and happiness, that every man enjoy the fruits of his own labor, and that every man benefit from his nation's advancements in education, technology and economic strength. Be actively engaged in seeking these ends; but be thoughtfully active. The creation of mass hysteria, the appeal to differences of race and status, and the abuse of power and force are disruptive of any organized society: they can destroy a democracy. My best personal wishes go with you. May you know the blessing of God through many years of fruitful living and may your life be a blessing to others. vl jd Sincerely yours. AM. 9 Left to right: Mr. Arnold, Dr. Westbrook, Mr. Betor, Mr. Moulton, Mr. White, Mr. Laquidara. Missing: Mrs. Pratt.

Dear Graduates: At this time in your life, I am sure that you look to the future with mixed emotions as to what is in store for you. Will you be a doctor, a lawyer, a technician, an airline hostess, an astronaut, a business man or a soldier? Whatever may be your course in life, you need to remember that you will not live by bread alone, but by truth and goodness, work and recreation, affection and friendship, aspiration and worship, seeking and finding, creating and cooperating, serving and sharing, loving and being loved. Abide by these tenets and my wish for you, that you have a good life, will be fulfilled. Sincerely, (W Dear Seniors: You are about to face the challenge of having to assume full responsibility for yourself. As many Americans do, you may take democracy—and the individual liberties which accompany it—more or less for granted. Many of us have come to assume they are stable, lasting things, despite what historians may say to the contrary. Actually, democracy is a rather relaxed form of self-government which works well only under certain special conditions. The first requirement is that the people be capable of self-government—reasonably well educated and intelligently self-disciplined. Democracy relies on the self-control of the individual to maintain order. Hopefully, you have learned that for democracy to work, there must be a strong, voluntary respect for law and order, and a healthy regard for the rights of others. Do you have good ethics and high ideals? Are you ready to face the challenge? Your parents and teachers have done their best—the rest is up to you. The best of luck to all of you. Sincerely, 8
