Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1969 volume:

We, the editors of Realms 1969, in our attempt to open the doors to the minds and souls of the students, as well as the activities they put their minds and souls into, found the natural openness we needed in the poetry of Robert Frost. We have tried to uncover the people inside the students who ' make our school live. The words of Mr. Frost will be your key; this yearbook, your door, and we invite you to enter in. ' • The days we've spent in high school have been days spent in learning. Yet learning extends beyond classrooms and textbooks. Miss Walmsley, throughout many years of thoughtful insight, has helped students to learn things more important than facts; the kind of things Robert Frost learned and expressed so beautifully in his poetry. We, the class of 1969, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Walmsley. We are grateful to her for helping us discover that the things we have learned here are only meaningful if we know how to use them in the world around us. They might not understand a burning glass. They might not understand the sun itself. It's knowing what to do with things that counts. 5 6 Dear Graduates: At this time in your life, I am sure that you look to the future with mixed emotions as to what is in store for you. Will you be a doctor, a lawyer, a technician, an airline hostess, an astronaut, a business man or a soldier? Whatever may be your course in life, you need to remember that you will not live by bread alone, but by truth and goodness, work and recreation, affection and friendship, aspiration and worship, seeking and finding, creating and cooperating, serving and sharing, loving and being loved. Abide by these tenets and my wish for you, that you have a good life, will be fulfilled. Sincerely, (W Dear Seniors: You are about to face the challenge of having to assume full responsibility for yourself. As many Americans do, you may take democracy—and the individual liberties which accompany it—more or less for granted. Many of us have come to assume they are stable, lasting things, despite what historians may say to the contrary. Actually, democracy is a rather relaxed form of self-government which works well only under certain special conditions. The first requirement is that the people be capable of self-government—reasonably well educated and intelligently self-disciplined. Democracy relies on the self-control of the individual to maintain order. Hopefully, you have learned that for democracy to work, there must be a strong, voluntary respect for law and order, and a healthy regard for the rights of others. Do you have good ethics and high ideals? Are you ready to face the challenge? Your parents and teachers have done their best—the rest is up to you. The best of luck to all of you. Sincerely, 8 Dear Graduate, One reads daily of activism by today's youth. And, this is good. Unfortunately, some groups of young people—and some older ones as well—have been acting without having first conceived a plan consonant with the democratic process for achieving their goals. Such action impedes progress: it doesn't promote it. I hope that your years in the Ballston Spa Central Schools have instilled in you a desire to help America reach a more perfect realization of its ideals; namely, that every man live in peace and happiness, that every man enjoy the fruits of his own labor, and that every man benefit from his nation's advancements in education, technology and economic strength. Be actively engaged in seeking these ends; but be thoughtfully active. The creation of mass hysteria, the appeal to differences of race and status, and the abuse of power and force are disruptive of any organized society: they can destroy a democracy. My best personal wishes go with you. May you know the blessing of God through many years of fruitful living and may your life be a blessing to others. vl jd Sincerely yours. The Westbrooks My friends: I came from ChiangMai the second largest city of Thailand, to live here in Ballston Spa. I truly have had a very good time here with you, my friends. You have been very nice and helpful to me in everything. I have learned so much in English, about your school system which is very different from mine, the activities in school which made it hard for me to leave them, and everything, especially the American way of life. I have had so many experiences that I will never forget through all my life. Certainly, all of you will always be in my memory. I do not know what words in the world will be nice enough for all of you. Just now I like to say, Thank you ever so much for everything marvelous that you have done for me. These words cannot express the feeling that I feel but they are the only ones I know. Time has gone so fast. The time of leaving has now come. I have to go home; but friends, I will try to be back. I hope that time is going to be soon for us. I hope our friendships will stay forever like the friendships between our countries. Enjoy snow for me next year, and forever. You know that I miss all of you a lot. 66 Field Service experience. Dear Friends, I spent this summer in Scotland, a country much smaller than New York State. Scotland is a country of its own and not a part of England as I learned the very first day! My home, in Dunlop, was about 20 miles southwest of Glasgow. It was called 'the Old Mill' and was built by the town miller in the 1700's. The rolling fields around my home were used for grazing sheep and dairy cows. Quite a different picture from Ballston Spa! I encountered many differences in the Scots from Americans and I wasn't surprised. What did surprise me was the many similarities in people and their feelings no matter what political or geographical areas they come from. The 'experience' gave me new insights of America, Great Britain and myself. I wish to thank the American Field Service and my friends for helping me to have this unforgettable 67 Rotary Dear Friends: Before I came here, I misunderstood about the teen-ager of America, but now I have known the American teen-ager as you really are. I have learned many good things from you and I have enjoyed a way of American life. I am very sorry because I can not stay here more than a year, but I am sure that I'll never forget here and you. I hope that 111 come back again. Thank you for your friendship. Yours truly, tfoffldfUl Fumiko and her American 68 Exchange Dear Friends, I will still be in Miyazaki, Japan when you receive your diplomas from Ballston High but my thoughts will be with you as they call your name for that long walk across the graduation stage. I wish each and every member of the Class of '69 the best of luck, an abundance of health and happiness and much success in future endeavors. The year 1969 is known as the Year of the Rooster in Japan which is appropriate for a Class of '69 which has much to crow about on the dawn of a new generation which arises to make its mark in the world. My year in Japan is flying by much too rapidly and each day I wish I could slow down the sands of time. I have found the Japanese people to be unbelievably kind, considerate and patient. They seem to have a burning inner desire for friendship and understanding. I will sorely miss my friends at Hyuga Gakuin High School, my host families, teachers, clergymen and the Rotarians of Miyazaki-West all of whom have made my year as a Rotary Exchange Student a memorable and rewarding experience. I shall ever be grateful to my parents and the members of the Ballston Spa Rotary Club for making this chance of a lifetime a living reality. I look forward to seeing you all again when I return in August. Until then, God bless you all. Sayonara, CaxL m Carl's Japanese family.
