My congratulations to you for your achievements thus far in life. In the years ahead of you, I trust that your learning will never cease. Furthermore, it is important that you also develop the art of friendship by first of all being a friend to yourself; by striving to encourage, not discourage; by closing your eyes to the faults of others and opening them to your own; by being tolerant and having an understanding heart; by putting your shoulder to the wheel to help achieve common goals; and remembering always, that whatever you give, you get back in return. Bruce Barton, the well-known author, wrote, Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things—a chance word, a tap on the shoulder, or a penny on a newsstand—I am tempted to think, there are no little things.” Frequently we become careless or thoughtless regarding what we consider to be unimportant things and later, because of the accumulation of many so-called unimportant items, serious consequences result. Very often young people are faced with the problem of going along with the group on some seemingly small thing which in their hearts they know they should not do. A number of these little things often build up to become a major item. People draw a mental picture of you. This mental picture is made up of many tiny parts. Your employer or your college professor will quite likely decide what you are on the basis of these small facets. It is, therefore, most important to be consistent in taking care of the small tasks each day. Many battles have been lost because some detail was overlooked or some small part failed mechanically. Many lives have been saved because some person offered a helping hand in some very insignificant way when another human being was grasping for the last straw. If you do each task to the best of your ability and if you look at your fellow man as an important individual and take the time to do little things to show that you feel that he is important, you will go a long way towards building a solid foundation for a successful and happy life.
