I f — Foreword — We, the editors of the 1966 Realms of Gold, invite you to come with us Through the Looking Glass and see ourselves as we are and have been. There have been times when we have run as fast as we could just to stay in place and other times when achievement came more easily. We have tried to make our Yearbook a book of memories— memories of our trials, our triumphs, and our everyday living. If, as you read your Yearbook, you are able to look with new insight and meaning on our years in Ballston, we shall have succeeded. We should like also to express our appreciation to our other editors and especially to our advisors, Mrs. Burgess and Miss Walmsley. Furthermore, this Yearbook would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of our classmates and community. But . . . The time has come,' the Walrus said. To talk of many things: Of shoes—and ships—and sealing wax— Of cabbages—and kings.' ” Lewis Carroll 2 NANCY 1VERS and NICK WESTBROOK Co-editors Table of Contents ■ Administration Staff Seniors Senior Directory Class Favorites Underclassmen Activities Sports Advertisements Message to Seniors This is the age of Youth Involvement. Science looks to youth for the imagination, resourcefulness and stamina for thrusting forward the frontiers in space, medicine, automation and other technologies. Religion looks to youth for the courage and the unclouded mind for examining the validity of tenets which have caused friction among believer-communities. Sociologists look to youth for the stirrings of the public conscience and the driving force for removing prejudice, bigotry, poverty, and ignorance from the globe. Young people from many nations are responding vigorously to these challenges. Mankind needs you and requires of you that you, too, grapple with the problems and issues before it. America depends upon you that the way of democracy, private enterprise, and individual worth and freedom may not be lost in the solutions. Superintendent of Schools 6 Bruce Barton, the well-known author, wrote, Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things—a chance word, a tap on the shoulder, or a penny on a newsstand—I am tempted to think, there are no little things.” Frequently we become careless or thoughtless regarding what we consider to be unimportant things and later, because of the accumulation of many so-called unimportant items, serious consequences result. Very often young people are faced with the problem of going along with the group on some seemingly small thing which in their hearts they know they should not do. A number of these little things often build up to become a major item. People draw a mental picture of you. This mental picture is made up of many tiny parts. Your employer or your college professor will quite likely decide what you are on the basis of these small facets. It is, therefore, most important to be consistent in taking care of the small tasks each day. Many battles have been lost because some detail was overlooked or some small part failed mechanically. Many lives have been saved because some person offered a helping hand in some very insignificant way when another human being was grasping for the last straw. If you do each task to the best of your ability and if you look at your fellow man as an important individual and take the time to do little things to show that you feel that he is important, you will go a long way towards building a solid foundation for a successful and happy life. Principal My congratulations to you for your achievements thus far in life. In the years ahead of you, I trust that your learning will never cease. Furthermore, it is important that you also develop the art of friendship by first of all being a friend to yourself; by striving to encourage, not discourage; by closing your eyes to the faults of others and opening them to your own; by being tolerant and having an understanding heart; by putting your shoulder to the wheel to help achieve common goals; and remembering always, that whatever you give, you get back in return. My best wishes always go with this school and its members. Memories of Ballston will always be happy memories for me. I hope I have played effectively, and will continue to play, my role in the American Field Service Program, whose motto is— Walk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the earth; Then and only then shall ye have Peace.” —SANSKRIT Thank you all. 56 Service Dear Friends For me, my stay in Lima, Peru was the most rewarding time of my life. With the help of my family, the Noyas, I became as much a Peruvian as possible. Now that I am home I can look back on my experience and see that differences exist between us only in our language and customs. They are people, like us, with emotions, standards, and beliefs; people with warm and open hearts! Always a part of my heart will be at 710 Chinchon Street, San Isidro, Lima, Peru. Gracias, AFS Lima Peru 1965 57 Fulbright Scholar To my friends in Ballston Spa: As a Fulbright scholar from India, I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and learn from the American students of Ballston Spa High School. It is my privilege here to express my hearty gratitude and warm sense of feeling to all the boys and girls of the Junior-Senior High School for the love, respect and cooperation given to me during my stay here among you for one year. I am very happy to say that you have proved wrong the opinion that it is very difficult to work with American children. Also, I am highly indebted to Superintendent, Shri George Osterwise; Principal, Shri Richard Tefft; the most loving and sympathetic person, Vice-principal, Shri William VanDer-werker; the school secretary, Shimati Ruth Dibelius for helping me in all respects and giving me over-all guidance; and my fellow teachers for accepting me and treating me as one of them. I .would like to say to my young students, Respect your teachers, parents, and elders and you will be highly rewarded. Remember you have much better facilities and opportunities for learning in your school than do the Indian students in theirs, so make a happy and successful life. I wish you the greatest success. You all have a standing invitation to visit India. I extend the feeling of love on behalf of myself and the people of India. Sincerely, Manu Patel Jhalod District Panchmahals Gujaret, India rrO. Rotary Exchange Program This year, Rotary initiated a foreign exchange program, sending local students abroad and bringing foreign students to Ballston. For our first guest, we were fortunate to have Ricardo Ungaro with us from Argentina. During his stay, he lived with the Kingsburys and the Goodridges. The shots on this page were taken at a reception, sponsored by Honor Society, welcoming Ricardo and saying goodbye to Steve Butler. S°E ; p- ,Cn0ls’ S- Kin«sburv. S. Butler. J. Iris Degregory Burnt Hills, New York Tel. EX 9-5482 106 SUCCESS AND SECURITY GO HAND IN HAND Graduation . . . and the end of twelve years of grade and high school . . . the beginning of a new era for you. Many of you will be going on to college, to technical schools . . . while others will be going directly to jobs. Whichever your course may be, remember that your education doesn't stop when you finish school. You can keep on learning ... by reading, by being constantly curious on your job, about everything you do, and finding answers to your questions. You can't stand still . . . for space-age America holds little for those who refuse to make progress. The scientists of the future need trained workers to back them up . . . technicians who can build from their plans. In business, in communications ... in arts and the professions . . . there's a future for those who keep learning . . . those who acquire more skills and more knowledge. In the past, the people around you have tried to guide you and help you so that you will be better equipped to face the future. In a small way the bank has played its role too. Those of you who have used one of the bank s many services ... by starting a savings account through the school . . . have seen what happens to your money ... it grows. Now, in the years ahead, miss no opportunity to add to your store of knowledge. Keep searching for facts, for theories ... for the basic information you will need to help you grow in your chosen field. Whatever your needs may be, we at the bank are ready to serve you and are willing to try to assist you. If you do learn, you'll fit into the pattern of the future . . . ready to accept the opportunities it holds for success. N. Y. 110 AN OPEN ROAD... OR A DEAD END STREET? When commencement is over, where do you go from there? Not too many years ago, a high school education was sufficient for most jobs; college was almost a luxury except for those who planned careers in such fields as medicine and law. Today, the pattern is entirely different. Advances in technology affect everyone in every business . . . and, frankly, a high school education is seldom enough to equip you to meet the challenge of the present ... to help you get a job with a future. What’s the answer? More education . . . four-year colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, technical schools, extension courses, anything at all which will increase your knowledge, develop your personal skills. There are jobs waiting . .. but these jobs call for knowledge and skill. Gen- eral Electric is just one of the many companies which will have job openings in the years to come for those who can meet job requirements. There are new products, new technologies on today’s drawing boards . . . with still others yet to be thought of . . . which will call for people with education, training and ability. The future needs not only men and women to come up with ideas, but also people to put those ideas into practice . . . designers and developers, scientists and salesmen, technicians and teachers . . . people with sufficient education to fill jobs. Now it’s up to you. You may choose the broad highway open to you through more education ... or wander down the dead end street of lost opportunities. If you keep learning, you’ll keep growing . . . growing with our nation in the age of space. GENERAL ELECTRIC SCHENECTADY PLANT III T ( It seems so long ego we set In these little desks.
