Jh Menwiam SHAWYN DEAYNE WETHERINGTON This yearbook honors the memory of Shawyn Wetherington who would also have been a member of our graduating class. He whom the gods love, dies young --Menander ’Dedication HARLANDV. WHITTREDGE We are proud to dedicate this yearbook to the late Mr. Harland V. Whittredge, who was always ready to help us with our problems and who proved himself a great friend of our class. Earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. --Moore Principal’s Message A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE If I were to ask many of you the question, What is your philosophy of life?” you would look at me blankly and ask, What are you talking about? Whether or not you have ever realized it, each of you does have a philosophy of life. It maybe a good one or a poor one; it may be simple or complicated. Whatever it is, you have acquired it through the sum total of your experiences up to now. Your philosophy of life is simply your plan for the future and the code of behavior by which you live. As a part of your education you should do some serious thinking about this matter. I would like to pass along to you two ideas which will serve to illustrate what I am talking about and which would make a good starting point in the formulation of your own philosophy. The. first idea might be stated as follows: My ultimate aim in life is to make this world a better place in which to live. This aim implies service to humanity. A person can live up to this regardless of what his vocation happens to be, if he develops his particular talents to the fullest and uses them to the benefit of others. If you, as students, have this objective, you will try each day to develop your capacities as much as you can, so that you will be able to be of most service later on. It will influence almost everything that you do. The second idea is this: You get out of life what you put into it. If you recognize and accept this truth, it, too, can greatly affect the way in which you live. It teaches that to have friends you must be a friend, and that to do a good job and get a great deal out of a project, you must throw yourself wholeheartedly into it. R. C. TEFFT Experience through the years has proved that those who live by these ideas achieve success and happiness. I have only touched upon them. I hope you will think about them, expand and develop them, and come up with a real philosophy of your own that will lead to success and happiness for you, and one that will truly make this a better world because you have lived in it. Superintendent’s Message During the past year our nation and we, its people, have experi-encedseveral momentsof crisis. Tensions even in hitherto remote parts of the globe have had in them the tinder for a world conflagration. Any irresponsibly dropped spark injected into the situation before the tension subsided could have set the world aflame. Indeed, so close to our shores was the Cuban crisis that each of us, no doubt, could envision pillars of nuclear fire and heat riding over our homes and communities. Moments of crisis compel us to reconsider what we believe in and what we value most highly. At such times most of us resolve again to stand steadfastly for the ideals that brought this country and our people their elements of greatness. Unfortunately, our determination to act in consonance with our ideals seems to waiver and then to flag as the peril becomes further and further removed. This periodic loss of moral and spiritual timber permits, if indeed it does not contribute to, the building of another moment of crisis. It is my hope that your years in the Ballston Spa Central Schools has convinced you of the need for holding fast to the ideals of American democracy which, in essence, promotes activities which upgrade mankind and abhors that which degrades any human being; and of seeking with fixed purpose a goal in life for yourself consistent with your ability. In a real sense, you and succeeding young people will inherit the earth. No generation in the past has had the opportunity to enjoy so completely all the resources of the world, and its cultures, and its beauty. The challenge is to take advantage of this opportunity yourself in such a way as to guarantee accessibility of the same opportunity to all other people. This would be the surest way, and the sanest way to eliminate moments of crisis in the future or the catastrophe of a holocaust. Toward such a rich and promising future, I wish you good-speed with God's help. Board of Education SEATED: Mr. Dodds, Mr. Zepko, Dr. Hansen. STANDING: Mr. Boyce. Mr. Short, Mr. Coffman, Mr. Eliason. In past years the Ballston Spa Board of Education has done a great deal to improve and refine the educational system in our village. This group is composed of some of the outstanding men of our community, whose task it is to attend to school business. Primarily as a result of their efforts and progressive ideals, seven years ago Junior High students were able to move from the overcrowdedness. Fortunately, the Board had been farsighted in taking into consideration the need for additional teaching stations, and last February a beautiful new wing was completed and added to our school. In doing this, the Board of Education proved what can be accomplished when insight and coopera tion are used. Last winter, a veteran member of the Board, Mr. Morrissey, passed away, having contributed many years of faithful service toward the betterment of Ballston Spa. We, as students, are grateful to him, and men like him, for making our school system worthy of pride. MRS. BARKER Commercial MR. BARTHOLDI Commercial MR. BENUSCAK Music MR. BOUTON Social Studies MRS. We were the first graduating class to conclude six entire years of high school in the new building. In junior high we took part in several activities: Reflector Staff, Dramatic Club, Thrift Club, Student Council, orchestra, band, and chorus. As mighty ninth graders we began to organize as a class. We elected Larry Phillips, president; Nancy Whittaker, vice-president; Jonnel Pack, secretary; and Marlene Man-gino, treasurer. That year Student Council was under the leadership of Larry Phillips, ably assisted by Gail Houck, vice-president; Nancy Whittaker, secretary; and Patty Lane, treasurer. The boys in our class worked hard on various athletic teams. Junior Varsity cheerleaders Patty Lane, Marilyn Sirocco, and Marie Miller cheered the teams to victory. As sophomores, several clubs were open to us: Spa Staff, Service Club, Art Service Club, Careers Club, Leaders' Club, Future Nurses, Future Teachers, Photography Club, and Dramatic Club. We participated in these and many music activities. Our boys made a valuable contribution to our teams this year, as in previous years. Girls in our class who lent support to the teams as cheerleaders were Marie Miller and Patty Lane who had moved up to the Varsity squad, and the Junior Varsity cheerleaders Marilyn Sirocco, Evelyn Rourke, Nancy Whittaker, and Mary Ann Greinert. Toward the middle of the year officers elected were: John Roche, president; Marie Miller, vice-president; Thomisa No-whitney, secretary; and Pete Beals, treasurer. At the end of this year we were faced with our first Regents exams. We managed these successfully and soon became juniors. The extracurricular horizon remained about the same with the addition of the National Honor Society. Jake Skiwski, Russell Altone, Eileen Benzal, Diane Bartholdi, Dolores Hart, Barry Lupe, Marie Miller, Diana Kemp and Corozan Jara were tapped as new members. Early in the year our class officers were elected. Larry Phillips became president. His fellow officers were Ulla Erickson, vice-president; Thomisa Nowhitney, secretary; and Jake Skiwski, treasurer. John Tefft, Vincent DeLucia, Bob Lawrence. John Roche, Carl LaBounty, Pete Beals, Dave Seymour, and Dave Wurster comprised an important part of the football team this year. In basketball John Roche, Larry Phillips, Ron Dreher, and Dave Wurster helped the Varsity team compile an excellent record. Barry Lupe. Larry Phillips, Vincent DeLucia, and Gary Rhodes were assets to the baseball team. Varsity cheerleaders were: Patty Lane, Marie Miller, Nancy Whittaker, Marilyn Sirocco and Mary Ann Greinert. In the spring came our beautiful Junior Prom, Bali H'ai. Marie Miller was chosen queen. After June exams we all wonderingly became seniors. During the summer Barry Lupe and Ray Nutting participated in Boys' State and Jake Skiwski toured the United Nations. As our senior year began we welcomed our foreign exchange student from the Philippines, Corazon Jara, who was spending the year with Carrimae Barrett. In the fall we elected class officers, these were: Jake Skiwski, president; Dave Fish, vice-president; Marie Miller, secretary; and Vincent DeLucia, treasurer. As seniors we looked forward to our last year in high school and finally to graduation and the Realms of Gold. This year we were privileged to have as our American Field Service representative Miss Corazon Jara, whose cheerful presence will long be remembered by those who have known her. Dearest friends, I think the A.F.S. is an excellent program in promoting world brotherhood and understanding. I’ve really gained a lot, including weight, during the few months that I've been here. I've learned so much about your country and I hope you have learned something about my country, too. I have enjoyed being with you for the past few months, but the year is about to end so, although I hate to, I have to say good-bye. I will always cherish the memory of the autumn leaves, the snow, and the spring. Corazon Jara ROW 1: Cora Jara, Diana Kemp, Dolores Hart, Diane Bartholdi, Patricia Armstrong, Eileen Benzal. As seniors you are young, ambitious and have many ideas and goals for yourself. Some of you will find your goals very easily met, while many will have to work very hard to succeed at all. If your goals are very easily met then you should raise your ideals and strive for even bigger and better things. Facing the world with all of its pressures, factions and unsettled conditions will be very hard for some of you. Your new found responsibilities are going to require much concentration and energy if you are to be happy. You are young and will be able to cope with these new experiences. In the past the people around you have tried to guide you and help you so that you will be better citizens. In a small way the bank has played its role too in your growing up. Those of you who have usedoneofthe bank's many services by starting a savings account through the school have seen what happens to your money - it grows. As you now graduate from high school, some of you will immediately become familar with the many of our other services. Many of you will continue your education and not use the bank's services entirely for a few years to come. Whatever, your needs may be, we are ready to serve you and are willing to try to assist you, with your financial problems, as we have the people of this community for the past 125 years. And The Beginning Graduation . . . and the end of twelve years of grade and high school . . . the beginning of a new era for you. Many of you will be going on to college, to technical schools .. . while others will be going directly to jobs. Whichever your course may be, remember that your education doesn’t stop when you finish school. You can keep on learning ... by reading, by being constantly curious on your job, about everything you do, and finding answers to your questions. You can’t stand still ... for space-age America holds little for those who refuse to make progress. The scientists of the future need trained workers to back them up . . . technicians who can build from their plans. In business, in communications ... in arts and the professions . . . there’s a future for those who keep learning . . . those who acquire more skills and more knowledge. At General Electric, the future will demand trained personnel everywhere ... to design the machines, to build them, and to operate them . . . to handle the vast amount of work to be done in new ways, with new products. General Electric is not alone in this ... for every firm finds itself in need of men and women with ability and training, in every degree. In the years ahead, miss no opportunity to add to your store of knowledge. Keep searching for facts, for theories ... for the basic information you will need to help you grow in your chosen field. If you do learn, you’ll fit into rhe pattern of the future . . . ready to accept the opportunities it holds for success.
