In the future small things will remind us of this time. Perhaps one day we will find the old program to the Senior Ball or a newspaper clipping about a play we were in or an award we had won. The music of Oscar Hammerstein will bring back memories too. A snatch of one of the songs he wrote will bring back the day we met our future husband or wife or the wonderful time we had at the prom. We will remember Oscar Hammerstein with his great contribution to American music and regret his untimely death in this our senior year. For this reason and to add our small honor to his name, we have used the lyrics of some of his best known songs as the theme of our yearbook. Osterwise Superintendent of Schools Fritz Hess Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent 8 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE What happens to America in the years ahead will depend upon what the American people choose to do today. Whether we have a welfare state or a dictatorship, or retain our freedom will depend upon the choices we, as Americans, are making today. You, our present student body, are destined to become America. You will be a party to these choices. The most important thing today is that you are now making decisions which will affect America in the years to come. If you are choosing the easy road, if you are taking the attitude, “let the other fellow do the hard work,” if you are just getting by and expecting something for nothing, then America will eventually lose the freedom that it cherishes. My admonition to you, the senior class, is to resolve to develop your own talents to the greatest extent possible, to establish your independence by diligent work, to resolve to stand on your own feet and carry your share of the future. To the underclassmen I would say your goals seem more remote; nevertheless, they are just as important as those which the senior class finds closer at hand. You are building the all-important foundations and you should resolve that you are going to be ready to carry the responsibilities of the future for the betterment of America and of the world. 9 Phyllis E. War is a stain on the dress of life; War is the height of destruction of humanity; Peace is the blooming garden of the efforts of mankind. Peace is the strength of the laborer, a chapter from the reign of Noah. —Tahir Ahmad. There is enough proof for these lines to be true and if we truly are the most intellectual beings on earth, we have learned our lesson. What then? Just to follow the last lines of the poet. He says: It is we who have to save humanity from war; It is we who have to decorate this house with the flowers of peace. Good deeds should never be delayed, so let’s start right now by thanking the AFS. Needless to say, my year here has been an important one; one which I shall always remember. Forever grateful to you all, Salma Elahi An old means of transporta- A Tazia tion, a new means of fun. 56 Walk Together, talk together O ye peoples of the earth: Getting to S cJbma GlaJh. Dagnc and her Danish family The Vagn Jensen's house DENMARK Now. in this our last formal message from the class of 1961, I. the American Field Service Foreign Exchange Student from the class,, would like to express my thanks to all who made the summer of my Junior year that I spent in the wonderful country of Denmark the most wonderful, exciting and rewarding in my life. I think the opportunity that this program gives to young people of many countries to live together in a normal home relationship is one of the most commendable and valuable projects in this day of missiles and jet age speed. We, as a class, must remember now that the fate of America, and in fact the whole world lies in our hands. Let us show our wisdom and guide it into the paths of peace, a lasting peace based on one of the principles of our own Constitution — the equality of ALL men. Let us make a peace where all men work alongside each other — man to man and brother to brother, no matter what their race, color or creed. If we do this, our lives will not be in vain and our grandchildren, regardless of the Russian threat, will never live under Communism! then and only then shall ye have peace Know You Katnp for alt hvad du har kart do om sa det galder Da er livet oj sa svard doden ikke heller. Chr. Richardt. D.igne Samuelson and Kartoflcr 57 UNITED NATIONS The U. N. Assembly The United Nations Youth Pilgrimage is sponsored by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs to show youth the important work that the U. N. is doing to promote peace. Last summer Elizabeth Fowler spent a week in New York City with 122 other students from seven states. BOYS' STATE Representatives to Boys’ State Donald Monaco and Gary Morris attended New York Boys’ State in the summer of their junior year. The purpose of Boys’ State, which is under the direction of the American Legion, is to teach boys how state and local government and politics operate. 58 STUDENT COUNCIL 1st row: G. Houck, Mrs. Tracy — advisor, C. Kemp — secretary. J. Geren — treasurer, A. Ravena — vice president. G. Morris — president, N. Whittaker. 2nd row: F. DeRidder, D. Siano, A. Carr, M. Kelley, J. Seibert, P. Beals, L. Phillips, D. Fish, R. Galandak, S. Bouchard. The Student Council is an organization of students, elected by students, to serve as their official representatives in all matters of concern to the entire school. The council must have the cooperation and support from most of the students and the full support of the faculty, the principal, and the sponsor. In this way our Student Council can operate most efficiently, having authority in many matters, and benefiting the students the most. 59 HONOR SOCIETY 0(7 J m 9 I Mb f First row: Gary Morris, Donald Austin, Beverly Ravena, John Goodwin. Each year at the two induction ceremonies certain juniors and seniors are tapped to become members because of their outstanding characteristics of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The main project of the society is to make the school’s share of the money that is given to the American Field Service foreign exchange student program. They also sponsor an American Field Service Day to which they invite exchange students from neighboring schools so that they may come for a day and exchange ideas. 61 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Mr. Plante, Advisor; Arthur Ravena, Treasurer; Robert Galandak, Vice President; Gary Morris, President; Beverly Ravena, Secretary; Miss Walmsley, Advisor. This is the purpose of the Dramatic Club — to locate or make all costumes and props for productions, to build, paint and arrange the scenery, to operate efficiently the lighting in order to give the proper effect to different scenes, to apply make-up to the actors, to act as prompters, and to promote advertising and sell tickets. All these jobs and many more are important to the success of a play. 68 Advisor MR. Among the few bright spots in the season were the 0-0 tie with Scotia, which was leading the league at the time; a 21-0 victory over Capital District Power, Watervliet; and a last minute 12-7 upset of powerful Draper. Possibly the Scottiees’ bright new purple, gold, and white jerseys were a jinx or the law of averages had just caught up with Ballston. This relatively poor season was a letdow ' to all the loyal Scottie rooters from the previous two championships. The Scotties look for greener pastures next year when nine lettermen return to bolster the upcoming heavy junior varsity squad. 84 FOOTBALL First row: W. Jurzak, D. Martin, F. DcRidder, A. However, the tide turned as they lost five in a row, four to the first division teams. The season was over at that point, but they did not give up as they evened their record at 8-8. With one game remaining against second place Scotia the Scotties, behind Frank Parillo, Larry Jenks and Curt Funston with 15, 11, and 9 point averages respectively, they tried valiantly to pull an upset and to even the season record at 9-9 for Coach Jones. 91 92 JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Marilyn Sirocco, captain; Emily Roy; Patricia Burmaster; Evelyn Rourke; Nancy Whittaker; Patrice Armstrong; Mary Anne Greinert. The Scotties’ pitching was fairly firm, but their bats were silent. This lack of hitting caused them to let the championship slip away. Thanks to the strong moundsmen, however, the team gained a 6-4 standing. 96 1st row: J. Cox, M Bump, D. LaFortune, L. Fischoff, D. Merrill, D. Cull, A. Coffman, A. Carr, J. Herrick. 2nd row: M.
