Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1959 volume:

Dedication We the class of 1959 dedicate our yearbook, Realms of Gold, to Mr. Joseph Murray. Mr. Murray has produced a number of basketball teams which have done a great deal to bring honor to our school. He has taught the members of our class sportsmanship, fair play and the will to win. Mr. Murray did a tremendous job to make our Freshman Promotion a big success and an event which we all hold dear to our hearts. We want to thank you, Mr. Murray, for the good nature you have distributed generously around our class and school. Senior Class In Memory This is a small tribute to the memory of Doctor Charles Higley, who willingly dedicated his life to our community for so many years. During his life, he gave unselfishly of his time and services and was known and loved by the people of Ballston. His friendliness, generosity, his French poodle sitting in his red convertible, the cartoons he drew for children and the annual visits” to the Higley house on every Halloween are well-remembered and missed by our Seniors as well as the rest of our town. His never-ending work and unfailing humor were interrupted by his untimely death. Despite this Doc Higley still lives in the hearts of the many people who knew and loved him. For these reasons our yearbook is in memory of this great roan. Doctor Charles Higley. Our Sponsors MRS. MacWILLIAMS MRS. MARINO Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the things you have to do when they ought to be done, whether you like it or not. It is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson he learns thoroughly. ” Thomas Henry Huxley The Class of 1959 will appreciate the truth of these words quoted from Thomas Huxley more and more as time goes on. If you were to check with your parents, they would assure you that the task of making oneself do what must be done when it ought to be done is a difficult one. There is much concern in the United States regarding the future of the nation in a precarious world. Everyone agrees that our security depends upon the exteflt to which our young men and women prepare themselves to meet the needs of the future. if the members of this senior class graduate with the resolve to assume their responsibilities to the full, if they have learned the lesson of doing the thing which they have to do when it ought to be done, no one need be concerned about their contribution to the future of America. It is my sincere hope that this class has learned the lesson. It is also my hope that the classes which follow will appreciate these truths and will resolve that they will be prepared when their graduation day arrives. 5 Richard C. I'm sure glad I found this chair and kept it. These newfangled chairs confuse me. This is the life even though those blasted missiles are making so much noise at the air field. That show at the field must really be something. I would like to be able to go. Oh well. I can see it just as well from the porch. Well, I'll be darned! If that isn’t an old relic. I haven't seen a jet in years. They were new about 50 years ago. That's when I was in high school. Those were the days. I can remember those years just as clearly as if I were there right now. In lunior High many members of the class joined various activities - Junior Band, Orchestra, Reflector Staff, Service Club, and Library Club. The years in Junior High passed very rapidly and soon we found ourselves as Mighty Ninth Graders. In the Junior High School Plays were Pat Arff, Stephen Ferradino, Herbert Morrell, Harry Seibert, Lynn Lang. Joanne Sirocco, Amy Fishoff, Mary Cull, Ronald Malloch, and Paul Phillips. As Ninth graders, the Student Council elected as officers: Steven Ferradino - President, Rosemary Funiciello - Vice President, Linda Zeeb - Secretary, and Herbert Morrell - Treasurer. Our class was well represented on the J.V. basketball team by Walter Foote, Bill Aubin, George Dreher Joesph West, and Lynn Thomas. These boys were cheered on by: Amy Fishoff, Joanne Sirocco, and Joan Wilkins on the J.V. Cheerleading Squad. Steve Ferradino, Harry Lomasney. James McDonough, Raymond West, Art Cardi, Robert Gorman, and Herb Morrell were players in the first Junior High basketball team to come out in the Ballston Spa High School and won the championship. Class officers were elected as President - Steven Ferradino, Vice President - Paul Phillips, Secretary - Joanne Sirocco, and Treasurer - Herbert Morrell. Wtf were the first class to have a Little Junior Prom and Pauline Remington and George Dreher were chosen King and Queen. At last promotion night finally came, and we were now entering Senior High. Our mighty ninth grade was the last ninth grade to be promoted in the old Junior-Senior High School. As Sophomores, we went through the trouble of adjusting to Senior High regulations. We elected Stephen Ferradino - President, Paul Phillips - Vice President, Bob Gorman - Secretary, and Walter Foote - Treasurer. This year we joined the choruses, Spa Staff, and other activities. Joanne Sirocco, Amy Fischoff, and Patty Arff joined the ranks as cheerleaders. Our athletes -Walter Foote, Billy Aubin, George Dreher, Joe West, Harry Lomasney and Lynn Thomas - became members of the Varsity Basketball team which became the champs of 1956. Also in 1956 our Baseball team became the champs and were well represented by a couple of our seniors, Pat Foote and Joe West. Pat Arff, Joanne Sirocco, Steve Ferradino. and Paul Phillips represented our class in Student Council. Varsity Club was represented by: Joe West, Bill Aubin, Walter Foote, and Stephen Ferradino. Steve Ferradino, Harry Seibert, and Joanne Sirocco were in the Student Council Play. Time passed very rapidly and we soon found ourselves as Jolly Juniors. We elected Steve Ferradino - President, Paul Phillips - Vice President, Rosemary Funniciello - Secretary, and Walter Foote - Treasurer. Our class rings were one of our major problems. The ring committee consisted of Steven Perradino. Paul Phillips, Rosemary Funniciello. Walter Foote. William Aub-in, Joe West, Harry Lomasney, Amy Fishoff, Joanne Sirocco, and Pauline Remington. The selection was finally made and we all eagerly awaited the day when they would arrive. Our Junior Prom was entitled SERENDIPITY. The King and Queen were Patty Arff and Bill Braim. Some of our Juniors were tapped for the Honor Society. They were Paul Phillips, Mike Arm-strong, Mary Cull, Lynn Lang, and Linda Zeeb. Some of the Juniors were in the Student Council Play, Around the World in Forty Days. Micaela Sauerbrey, Rosemary Funniciello, Pauline Remington, Carole Capasso, Amy Fishoff, Joanne Sirocco, and Patty Arff formed a girls’Sextet which was a success. That summer some of our students temporarily left to meet new challenges. They were Paul Phillips who went to Germany. Steven Ferradino and Mike Armstrong who went to Boys' State, and Lynn Lang who went to the U.N. in New York. Our Junior year was quite active but our best year was yet to come. We finally became Stately Seniors and we were going to live up this title. Stephen Ferradino was elected President of the Senior class, Paul Phillips - Vice President; Sam Betor - Secretary, and Walter Foote - Treasurer. The yearbook was organized, and Pat Arff and Harry Seibert were elected Co-Editors. The Senior Play The Little World of Don Camillo proved to be enjoyed by all. Numerous character supported Harry Seibert and Mike Armstrong who shared the spotlight. Our undefeated football team won the Western B Championship. Seniors who played on the team were Stephen Ferradino, Samuel Betor, Bob Lee, Jim Chambers, and Tommy Tefft. We were proud to have a senior, Paul Phillips as President of Student Council. Lorraine Lynett, Evelyn Dean, James Chambers, and Olga Overberg were added to the membership of the Honor Society. Through the years our class lost a few of its members, but it also received - Elizabeth Ouderkirk, Robert Glick, and Olga Overberg, our foreign exchange student from Norway. As the plans of the Yearbook progressed, we looked forward to our Washington trip. Senior Banquet, and Commencement night when we hoped to be graduated as aging individuals. 45 Prophecy Here we are, friends, for the twenty-fifth reunion of the class of 1959.
