Today people are much concerned with rockets, the prospect of space travel and the possibility of war on a world-wide basis, using rocket-type missies. We Americans are facing times which are quite similiar to the early settlers of this part of the country. These settlers faced the unknown wilderness with the possibility of sudden attacks. They overcame these hardships through willpower, fortitude, and intelligence because they had to come to the new world with an ideal of freedom before them, and they were willing to undergo all kinds of hardships and to expend almost superhuman effort to establish themselves and protect their ideal. Whether America will survive and preserve the ideals of democracy which we have depends upon whether our people today are willing to make the sacrifices in sweat and blood that our forefathers were willing to make. With the marvelous facilities and conveniences which we have, it is a great temptation to take the easy way. If America is to survive, the students of today must be willing to challenge themselves to do their very best in the difficult tasks in order to prepare themselves to be pioneers in the new world which lies just ahead. It is my hope that the class of 1958 will leave high school with the firm resolve to carry on the American heritage through their worthwhile efforts to improve themselves in the service of their country and mankind I would like to admonish the classes which follow that they must accept the challenge to do their best in difficult and sometimes distasteful tasks today rather than to wait until some future time. The foundation for their future and the future of America is being built by them today. Page 3
