The biographies of most of the outstanding people in history have one thing in common. Success came to them because they were willing to put their best effort into menial and often distasteful tasks with which they were faced. Usually one who does exceptionally fine work in connection with minor jobs is given greater responsibilities and the rewards which go with them. To the Class of 1955 I would say: When you enter the world of work, be willing to start at the bottom and to devote your full effort and enthusiasm to your beginning employment even though some of the work may be distasteful to you. To the underclassmen I would say: Every day each of you is faced with tasks we would like to avoid. The person who attacks these things with a will, has time to do the things he likes to do and has the satisfaction of a job well done. If, while you are in school, you develop this habit, you will enhance your chances for success and happiness in the future.
