Knowit Wittnesses: Senior Mi story MIGHTY OAKS FROM TINY ACORNS GROW Everyone knows tiny seeds sometimes turn out beautiful productions. The seeds of the class of '53 are its sixty one members. Thanks to good teachers, parents, and friends the soil if now fertile and the mighty oaks have become reality. In our Freshman year, the seeds were sown and slowly but surely began to grow. The two Junior High plays of that year. My Cousin From Texas and Mama Had a Hunch starred the following, of our present Seniors: Diane Baumgartner, Bernice Corning, Nancy Hathorn, Patricia McDonald, Linda Lloyd, John Doyle, Walter Crawford, John Wiley and Edward Regis. Our 9A class did much to raise money under the supervision of such officers as Norman Mosher, President: David Tiffault, Vice President; Lena Gerard, Secretary and Judgie Jurcsak, Treasurer. In our Sophomore year you might say we were still young shrubs trying hard to grow up. In this year we went through the terrible struggle of having separate homerooms for girls and boys, but finally found out how nice it could be at times. We also learned what real homework was, although some of us never did figure out how to get it done. Several of our lowly Sophomores received parts in the Student Council play, Mother Is a Freshman. They were Nancy Hathorn, Bernice Corning and Linda Lloyd. These babes in the woods really enjoyed working with their upper classmen. The Junior year arrived and found us sturdy young trees. We received our class rings and many different methods were devised for showing them. The Junior Prom was a big success with its theme of Davy Jones' Locker and the many couples in formal dress. Much appreciation should be expressed to Mr. Rock and the prom committee for their work in making things go oft so smoothly. The end of the year came with the dreaded English regents and all the others, too. The Juniors pulled through and became Seniors. Through the four years of High School, many of our present Seniors were outstanding in such sports as basketball, baseball and football. The girls also had a bowling team and a hockey team. Our boys who were outstanding in sports were Ray Bohme, Ronald Solotruck, Kent Fulton, Dick Melander, Judgie Jurcsak, John McDonald, John Doyle. Donald Craft. Fotchie Thomas. Franklin Haskell and John Wiley. We were proud when John Doule was chosen captain of the football team in his Junior and Senior years. John McDonald was basketball captain in his Junior year and also went to Playnight in Saratoga. We won the 1950-51 Class C division in basketball and went to the sectionals in Convention Hall at Saratoga. Some of our present Seniors were instrumental in helping us to win. The players did very well in the league and above all showed good sportsmanship at all times. The teams were cheered on at times by such cheerleaders as Bernice Corning, Shirley Dymond. Patricia McDonald. Dorothy Rosenbrock, Patricia Armer, Mary Anna Leland, Dorothy Stevens and Ruthjackson. The class of '53 was outstanding in musical activities, too. Quite a few of out members belonged to orchestra, band, and chorus. Under the able direction of Mrs. King, Mr. Hydon, Mrs. Currie, and Miss Migliorini we were able to put on several good concerts, enter contests, and go to All-State. There were some who were outstanding all by themselves, such as Roger Freestone, and our accompanists. Nancy Hathorn and Shirley Dymond. In the various clubs the present Seniors were very active. Bessie Lawrence, Joan Benoit, Margaret To-bano, Anita Lewis. Lena Gerard. Jean Knickerbocker, Evert Johnson, Walter Crawford, and Eddie Regis were most helpful in the Service Club. The Spa staff contained many of the present Seniors, also. Due to hard work and cooperation a very interesting school paper was turned out. Student Council did some wonderful work in providing student buses to the basketball games, and in running the school government. Donald Craft, Pat McDonald, and Sara Lou Potter were the Representatives to the Council. At last we became Seniors and really tried to live up to the title. Things began happening to us almost immediately. We elected Roger Freestone President of the Senior class and also the following officers: Lena Gerard, Vice President: Bernice Corning, Secretary; and Edite Jacobson, Treasurer. The Washington trip was planned and the yearbook staff was organized. We sold wrapping paper and Christmas cards. Scotty dogs, and magazines to raise money. Some of the Seniors also sold popcorn and fudge at the basketball games. Dorothy Stevens and Barbara LeVee edited and co-edited the Spa in our Senior year. The yearbook was headed by David MacFee, Editor; Pat” McDonald, Assistant Editor; and Lena Gerard. Business Manager. Donald Craft was elected President of the Student Council with Roger Freestone, Bernice Corning and Eddie Regis to help him. Various Seniors plaved big parts in the other organizations. Shirley Dymond, Nancy Hathorn, Ruth Jackson, Pat Armer, Dorothy Stevens, Anne Goddard, Rosemary White, Linda Lloyd and Donald Craft went to All-State for chorus and ably represented the school. The Senior play, Men Are Like Street Cars starred Bernice Corning and had a supporting cast of Pat McDonald, Anne Goddard, Anne Gledhill, Mary Lou Bush, Beverly Merchant, Mary Krebs, Barbara LeVee, Alice Torjussen, Jean Snyder, Linda Lloyd, John Doyle, John McDonald, Ray Bohme, DonaldCrafi and Roger Freestone. Pictures for the yearbook were taken early in the year and the announcements for graduation were selected. Now the time has come for us to leave Ballston High and our many friends. Some of us may never meet again, but we will have had the satisfaction of remembering that from tiny seeds all of us grew and grew until we became the mighty oaks of the Class of'53. No one can take away the memories that are strong within us-the good advice of our parents and teachers, their everlasting patience, and their firm loyalty in defending us. Let's hope we can remain the mighty oaks they have made us so that we. too, may someday be the push behind a tiny seed. Senior Class Prophecy As I sat at my desk in the year 1968, 1 saw a fleet of jets streak across the sky which reminded me of the newspaper article 1 had seen to the effect that GEORGE RANDALL, an old highschool classmate of mine, is the only hot rodder too fast for the Law, As 1 began to reminiscence about my old classmates, I realized that the Class of 1953 must be pretty well established now.
