But do not shut the covers too quickly: for this is a history of you, the student body of Ballston Spa High School. You may not like our book, PERHAPS you could have done better: but to us, who have spent hours of hard work, racked our brains for ideas, and have had our shares of trouble and enioyment, it is our masterpiece. And so, it is with no apoloqies: but with a certain pride in our achievement, that we present to you this REALMS OF GOLD IQ47. May it keep ever vivid the debt of gratis tude we feel towards the halls of BSI-lS and the memories of student life. X., 'Xu I ivhovl. As the parents look on they will pray God to guide their children over the re mainder of the Journey They see their young people venture forth with new and modern ideas- they see them seek happiness each in a different way. These students who are advancing into their world feel it their duty to en- rich th ir lives so that they may fulfill the dreams and the hopes of the parents who so unselfishly have guided them into richer fields of knowledge. Therc is a great deal more for us all to learn but in attaining these realms of progress we have the encouragement and faith of our parents to look backward and for- ward to. A feeling of sadness grips our hearts when w think of the gaieties we are leaving- but a renewed feeling of strength and joy attends us as we think of the great futures we have to aim for and the past experience we have to stand on. In dedication, parents, we hope you will look upon our yearbook, our class and your children and feel proud. We wish to dedicate our yearbook to the parents of these stude its who are facing graduation and the finale of their adolescence These parents have taken their chil dren by the hands walked into the gard n of knowledge and shown them the way They have walked toqether over rose strewn paths and through thorns and blossoms Now they have reached the garden gate and the gate is op n Soon those children will step forth from this garden and parental guidance which road to take and into wht h dt rection they will guide their lives i ri g QBL ci ' Q Pl 1 Now, it is for the children to decide H II ' . l I C , l . i f tv , , 3 t s 5 -FACULTY Front row Left to nqht SL Ba k row Left to rlqht MISS Sldney Socral studl s M MISS Bldweu Llbmmm anno Che-mxstry and Mathemaucs My Vquqhqn Pflnmpgl BGI'll1Oldl BLISIDGSS Mr lones Superlntendent Fmewmh Shop Mrs Kmg Muslc Instructor Plante Sclence r Rock Ar cond row Left to rlqht Mxss Marshall Nurse Those not 1ncluded Mrss Nlchols Socxal studxes Mrs Manno Enqllsh Mrss Watson S cretary MISS Cormnq Secretary MISS Murray MUSIC Mrs Mac W1ll1ams Latm Mrs Tracy Busm SS Mr Scott Physrcal eddcatxon Mrs Blackmore Soanlsh Mlss Wheeler Phys1cal educatlon I I Q- I I V Mr. ' - ' ' I - ' ' Mr. ' - ' ' - I Mr. ' - Miss McClellan h English Mr' h 1 lvl . CLASS PROPHECY .. We find Maynard Angell, who has just purchased a harp cheap and recently acquired wings from the Air Corps surplus, flying around over the area that contains all of his friends of his graduating class, way back in l94'7. He sees: Robert Bunyan is running Bobby's Shoppee, a fascinating beauty parlor. He has a great business, but we have to admit that most of the patronage goes to see Robert. lack Burke is an up-and-coming chemistry teacher at Vassar. Lucien Caputo has been recently chosen as Coach for Notre Dame. He is coaching Iimmie Nagle who is star of the team and wedded to New York's mayor Audrey Carpenter. Edwin and Irving Cook have a nice intellectual job. They are human examples of synonyms for We-bster's Dictionary. Raymond DeLong has just visited Bobby's Shoppee as he is calling on his fiancee, Dorothy Lowery, whose profession is making popcorn balls for sale in New- berry's Chain Stores. Edward Rodak, under the pen name of H. H. Widelhoofer, is writing his first great novel, The Corn Stcxlks at Midnight. Benny Roberts has just left for Cuba and his sugar plantation, where he will rejoin his wife, the former Margaret Lane. Doris Plummer and james Doherty are having a big wedding at the city hall. The Maid of Honor is Martha Denison, the Blues singer at the Stork Club in New York and the best man is Robert Sullivan, who recently had a wedding of his own when he married Hilda Aufiero, famed cover girl for Kellog's Cornflakes. Speaking of romances he notices a little affair going on between David Stack the comedian in place of lack Benny and Elinor Beach, who works in Washington, D. C. as Secretary of the Secretary of the Secretary of the State. Reed Payne has a job for Universal Studios as head director for movies. He is enjoying himself immensely as he has the privilege of directing Arle Garten, handsome actor, fSonny Guertin to us.l and Rosalind Boush, Ruth Bush. Armand Westerlund is selling Planter's Peanuts with the traditional uniform and Argentine Carbone is trotting alongside of him as assis- tant barker. David Lillie is now the new owner of Abernathy's Drug Store the name of which he is changing to Lilly's Little Lounge . Loran Carp and Walter Cull are working as assistant morticians in the Nusser and Eliason Funeral Home. Their motto is Cutrates for cut throats . Playboy Nauman has been courting the vivacious Mme. Albro, fortune teller at Pauline Kingsley's Spa- ghetti Shop. Faye Evarts is the producer of the new Broadway show, Faye's Folly , starring Edna Dutcher in a juggling routine and when not working, she juggles Leonard Uline, her current flame. Charles Grose is now head of the Ballston Iournal fnow the Grose Gazettel. Sybil Morris and Ruth Anne Millard have respected positions at the Waldorf. They are doing a dish washing routine. Stanley Oleksiak and Craig Knickerbocker have organized a new dance team called Paradise Lost twith apologies to john Miltonl, with Geraldine Leahy as their vocalist, and Nancy Campbell as their publicity agent. Bob Welch has recently secured a position on the State Board of Education. He has great plans in store, such as, eliminating the minor subjects, English and Social Studies, in school education. Lizzie Ryan has just returned from Russell Sage College, where she studied plumbing. She is so pleased with her occupation that you might say she is just plumb happy . Mary Nowhitney has become the chief of police of Ballston. She appreciates this honor very much and intends to clean up the city fBallston is now a cityl with patrolman Bailey as her right hand woman. Harold Hayes and his new bride, Lorraine York are spending their honey- moon in India. Harold has just resigned his position as bank robber and Lorraine has just assumed the position of principal at Burnt Hills High School. -.:..:., Har W ifgi-E f i IT,-5 F ST XNTELLECTU AL Some-5 Noqka cmd SybxX Moms I '5- '-'gm HK, 'V -.P-on' - x ggi. lyL '-sgfff , . ,,, .., ...Q A -Q -H ,-ff, . -rf- V4 Q fm, 4, 'g, ,- q 'W1'u-oQQQL.f,.,-f.,. The '46 football did not quite come up to expectations, in fact it did not even approach our expectations. We finished with a record of 1 win compared to six defeats and ended up in the cellar of the Tri-County League. The team under Coach Scott looked fairly good in practice and a good season was anticipated. Five of the starting men had either had experience as regular players or as substitutes. These men were Rus Clark in the backfield, Salvy Beninati and Armand Westerlund at ends, and limmy Nagle at center. Ioe Monoco, a newcomer who proved his worth at quarterback despite inexperience, completed the first team. s Thomas and Harry Our first game of the season with Cambridge set us back on our heels where we remained for the rest of the season, except for the South High game which we won. Although we lost six games we came close in several contests. Greenwich and Warrensburgh beat us by only a few points and in the rest of the games the team put up a good fight. Injuries and lack of experienced substitutes handicapped us throughout the season and continued to the prom season. The Seniors represented on the team were lack Burke, Irving Cook, Armand Westerlind, Iimmy Nagle and Walter Cull. :- BASEBALL In the 1946 baseball season Ballston High School became the Saratoga County League Champions. Coach Scott had returned to head the team and went through the league compe- tition with a record of seven wins and but one loss. All the games in the campaign were exciting, especially the game against Burnt Hills when we clinched the pennant. Many of this year's seniors were playing on the team, these included Lucian Caputo, Sonny Guertin, Roger Nusser, Bob Sullivan and Charles Grose. We were also honored when two of our players on the team were selected for the County League All Stars. The gold trophy that was presented to the team now is on display in the junior high show case. ln 1947, Scott will try to defend the title for Ballston High with a green team. D61 HISTORY OF THE '46 TEAM Coach Bill Scott's five trounced through a fairly easy season, They emerged with five out of eleven starts. Three of which gained feathers in our hat. The first victory was over Saratoga to the tune of 16-14, but later in the season we were defeated by Saratoga 3l-29. Schuylerville, who headed the county Scho- lastic League with nine wins and no losses, came up against Ballston with the hope of making it ten straight. But Oogie Caputo stole the ball in the last thirty seconds to make the score 25-23. The second feather was Burnt Hills, where the Wester- lund-Guertin combination couldn't be stopped, so we beat Burnt Hills 27-21. These two wins plus Greenwich put us second in the County League. ln the middle of the season we came back to defeat Stillwater who had defeated us 50-29 earlier in the season. We wanted to beat them on our own court and did 32-30. Then the Ballston five went into a decline with four losses, three of which were in the league. Corinth swamped us 3l-l9, South High edged us out 33-28. Then Greenwich squeezed a 27-25 victory in an overtime. Although Ballston has Corinth, Burnt Hills, and Schuylerville yet to play, we stand fourth in the Scholastic League. Bill Scott's first year back with varsity ball has proven very good. Not only has he trained his boys, but he has good material for a promising varsity next year. VARSITY BASKETBALL x' f-f if V is fa 5 Q35 J The Junior Varsity Basketball -eom During the sixteen game season Coach Marino proved to have a fairly successful tearn. The team won six of its first nine league games. Three teams were each beaten twice by Ballston. They were Greenwich South High, and Stillwater. The game which provided the most thrills was the heart breaker we lost to Burnt Hills 2322. We lost to Schuylerville by nine points. Corinth trounced us 30-l7 on their court. ln the non-league games Ballston was not able to beat its two opponents. Broadalbin and Saratoga racked up two vic- tories apiece against us. Ballston lost a tough game at Conven- tion Hall when Saratoga won by only seven points. The first string of the junior varsity consisted of lohn Domi- nick and Bitty lursack as forwards, Billy Mitchell as center, and Tom lursack and Chuck Thomas as guards. The other members of the junior varsity were Bartlett Beebe, Lester Beni- nati, lohn Campbell, Edward Monogue, Edward Neville, Fred Byan, and Louis Weldon. Ballston ran up it's biggest score when they played Green' wich at home and won 56-23. ln that game Lester Beninati scored fitteenpoints and Torn lursack thirteen. In the Burnt Hills game at home Beebe scored fifteen points as Ballston swamped their visitors. When Ballston beat South High at home, Chuck Thomas scored thirteen points. In the Ballston- Stillwater tilt at home Bitty lursack racked up thirteen points. He also scored twelve points in a Saratoga tilt. There is no doubt that Bill Scott will have some good varsity prospects from the Junior varsity of 1947. 1 ...I I cv. kwwa CHEERLEADERS 9 In 1944 the future class of 47 rcceived the honor of becoming freshmen in The Ballston Spa High School We started our high school career with eagerness and self confidence pe culiar to freshmen After initiation into the intricacies of homework and periodical exams we were less eager and less self confident Dramatics honored Iames Nagle Sybil Morris Earl Guertin Maynard Angcll Robert Bunyan Ruth Anne Millard Martha Denison and Mary Nowhitney Iames Nagle was our leader and tops in the intelligence division Graduation came and many weary hearts were warmed by the sight of Iunior High Diplomas Citiz nship winners were Doris Albro and Loran Carp Martha Denison was honored by the award of the Iunior High School medal Thus another class passed from the halls of Iunior High The senior high door opened and welcomed the uncertain sophomores for unexplored and more difficult subiects Iames Nagle was re elected president and the problems of the future and our plans began to loom and plague us When we came to school as Juniors we found ourselves faced with a period of steady activity We were faced with the prom and through much difficulty labor and aided and abetted by Mr Rock ive finally succeeded in presenting a tulip bedecked formal The Latin students progressed from Caesar to Cicero with the aid of Mrs MacW1ll1ams We grew fond of our education. We then progressed to the spectacular height of senior status. We saw new faces among the old and missed some familiar faces among them Ioseph Conte who entered the armed forces. New and seemingly unsurmogntable difficulties presented themselves. Ou' class solved the problems of the Washington trip The Year Book and the senior banquet with the able leadership of our president Edwin Cook and cooperation of Mr. Vaughan and our class deans. Now we are concluding our stay at Ballston High thankful for the patience and considera- tion of the faculty armed with education. Soon our class will pass on as with classes of other years with many memories and faith in the future and start upon another unjourneyed road.
