Bearcats Take Cross Plains 19-O This was the first conference game of the season for both teams. Richards, Batts, and lciilliams also looked good on the line. Bobby Hunley and Caffey looked fairly good at center: also the regular center Glenn lcrarland Kwho was out because of a rib injury! looked good in the time he played. Wright played an out standing game. Bell, Wilson, and Routh did some fine work in the backfield. The Bearcats in- vaded Brady for the annual game and long before game time all the stands on the Bearcat side of the field were filled with fans. The first half was a see-saw affair with no scores on either side by the Bearcats holding a 5 to 2 decision in first downs. Costly fumbles repeatedly stopped the Bearcat drives and it was not until the second half that the local boys got underway and began their offense that brought home a victory. Soon after the second half opened Bell inter cepted a Brady pass on his own 20 and returned to mid-field. On the next play Striplin passed to Bell for five yards and then connected with Batts for a ten yard pass and Batts shook loose from one tackler and raced to the three yard line. Wright hit the center of the line for one yard and Striplin went A off tackle on the next play for the first touchdown of the game. Wright's kick was good and the score was 7-0. Brady received the kickoff but could go no place and kicked to the Bearcat 41-yard line. Striplin passed to Bell for nineteen yards and a first down, then took a try at the line which netted 6 yards, passed to Harville for 5 and another first down and connected with Harville for another pass behind the Brady safety and Harville went over stand- ing up for the counter. Wrightfs kick was wide and the score was 13 to O. Taking the ball on the 50- yard line Striplin and Bell sparked the offense that accounted for the final score of the game. In this drive there was excellent team play and beautiful blocking to take the ball down the field. Striplin went into the line for two yards and then circled the end for 10 yards and a first down. Wright al- most got into the clear on the next play and got enough yardage for another first down. He came out with 8 through the line and Bell slid through the line for a five and another first down. On the next play the Bearcats drew a 15-yard penalty for holding but Striplin passed to Bell for fifteen. He passed another to Bell for nine and Bell hit the line for one and a first down. On the next play Bell went around his own right end for a score behind beauti- ful blocking. lright's kick was low and the scoring for the evening was over with the score 19 to zero. The offensive was not the whole show during the evening. The Bearcat line was fighting from the first whistle to the lastg they stopped Brady backs for only three first downs during the game. lhen Brady passed or kicked, the line was rushing in so fast that this part of the game was not effective. A holiday crowd of 5,000 witnessed the seventh Bearcat victory of the season on Armistice day. The Bearcats had the edge on the Bluecats the en- tire first half although no score was made. The Bearcats made two stabs in the Coleman territory, both times get- ting close to pay dirt, and both times the ball was called back because of fifteen yard penalties. In the first period Striplin threw a 14-yard pass to Bell, who ran 2l yards to be downed on the goal line. The ball was called back and the Bearcats penalized fifteen yards for pushing. In the second quarter, a pass to Harville from Striplin netted thirty yards and put the ball on the Coleman ten. Again the ball was called back on a fifteen yard penalty. The Bearcats threatened other times in the first half but never got over. The first tally of the game came to- ward the middle of the third period. Striplin carried from the 42 to the 22. Striplin passed to Bell for eight. And then it was Striplin over tackle for thirteen, put- ting make the ball on the one yard line. lorrison cane to a powerful plunge to put it over. Striplin kicked the point. And quick in succession Bell scored and Wright scored making the score at the end 21 to zero. Bearcats Claw Blizzards 40-0 Playing in a chilling northeast wind, the Ballinger Bearcats swept through the Winters Blizzards, 40 to zero, in the annual Runnels County classic. The win also gave Ballinger undisputed championship of District 8-A. Not once throughout the game did Winters threaten to score on the county seat lads, nor did they seem able to stop the onslaught of Coach Felton Wright's best clicking la- chine since 1929, if not its equal. Led by Bell, elu- sive half, the Bearcats scored almost at will against the Blizzards and allowed them to obtain only one first down. The first counter was made by Bell who went 21 yards for the score. Bell scored in the second quarter when he went 55 yards for the touchdown. Striplin con- nected with Harville, Batts, and Bell for three more scores. The final counter cane near the end of the game when lcW1llians caught a bad return punt on Winters' 25-yard line and dashed to the one yard line. Bell smashed through the line for the goal. Bell intercepted a pass and went 26 yards to score. The kick was good and the score was 13-O, Batts made the third score on a pass from Striplin. For the fourth tally Bell went 55-yards to paydirt. Bell went 25 yards on an intercepted pass for the fifth. Two passes from Striplin to Bell counted for two more touchdowns. For the last count of the game Bell went eighty yards for the score. Good blocking that left the entire opposition on the ground was the main feature of the Bearcat attack. Every man on the squad saw action. Bearcats Claw Over Monahans 33-7 A machine-like Bearcat S-A gridiron dreadnaught, using a spinner play, a passing attack and a deadly defense, rolled over Monahans' Green Wave, 33-7. This victory gave the Bearcats the region two, class A football championship and ended their season with a record unmarred by defeat. During the first period Bell, Ballinger's widely heralded backfield ace, hob- bled to the bench with a twisted knee. Shortly after, the Bearcats crowded Brownfield back to its own eight yard line and took possession there when Brownfield fumbled. One touchdown dash was called back from offside, a pass was incomplete, and then Striplin raced around left end behind devastating interference for the initial score of the game. His point try was wide, and that was all the scoring until the fourth quarter, when another fumble gave Ballinger possession deep in Brownfield territory. Fullback Bob Wright covered it on the 25, and from there it was five plays to a touchdown. Wright and Striplin pushed to a first down on the eleven, and from there Striplin lobbed the ball into the end zone. Harville was waiting. All alone, and the Bearcats had another touchdown. Striplin kicked the point, and the score was 13-0. Credit for the victory must go largely to the hard-charging Bal- linger line, which never allowed Brownfield to score Heading the Bearcat charges were Tackle Weldon Bux kemper, Harville, Guards Ray Wood and Zane McWilliams and Bob Wright Brownfield tool over after the initial touchdown and drove sixty yards to Just inside the Bearcat 20 before yielding the ball on downs The remainder of the first half was occupied with a punting battle in which neither team ever owned the ball past the other' 40 yard line A pass interception by Lewis on the first series of downs in the second half set up the only other Brownfield scoring threat He gathered in one of Striplin tosses on his own 45 and raced it back to the Bearcat 34 Soon after, he got away on a 15 yard trip to the nine yard line But four plays cou1dn't gain an inch, and the Bearcats took over With a stiff breeze, Striplin gained 20 yards on the kick exchange, and this ended Brownfield's last threat Only a few plays before the game's end, another Brownfield fumble gave the ball to the Bearcats in scoring territory, but the Cubs held on downs Striplin, kicking half the time against a stiff breeze, turned in a remarkable 34 yard average, and many of his punts came Just right to snap the Cubs best chances to initiate a touchdown drive The entire Bearcat team turned in an outstanding performance This was the last game under the RED AND BLACK for lorris Nunle , Lloyd Bell, Ray Wood, Glen lcFar1and, and Ernie lcWi1 inns 47511 Lloyd Bell, Back Jerome Buxkemper, Guard . c .
