Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1973 volume:

. I iSfl Who hath not saved some trifling thing n - prized than jewels are, 4 faded flower, a broken ring, a tress of golden hair? — Ellen Clementine Howarth A Year to Remember 2 You have given me eyes to see the beauties of the earth, Lord, and to know the wonder of sunsets. You have given me ears to hear the thundering of great waterfalls and the whisper of gentle rain. You have given me a mind with which to question, explore, and probe the mysteries of the Universe. You have given me the dedication to work and fight for something or someone that needs me. And you have given me courage! I have courage, Lord, for earthquakes . . . if they come. 4 You, my friend, are my needs answered. You are the companion with whom I long to talk, laugh, and share experiences. What kind of friend would I be if I sought you only when I have hours to kill? I offer instead hours to live. Even when we are silent, our hearts communicate. In our friendship our thoughts, desires, and expectations are shared without words; for mere words are inadequate to express the innermost secrets of our souls. When we are apart, I do not grieve; that which I love most in you is clearer in your absence. My only desire is to know the pain of too much tenderness; to be wounded by my own understanding of love, and to suffer willingly and joyfully. How I love the feeling of participation! All I want is to be a part of the great whole — to know that 1 am a stone in the foundation, a beam in the framework, a page in the book. I work to keep pace with the earth; to be idle is to be out of step with life’s procession. I play to reap pleasure and I harvest precious memories. Some small material objects serve as 10 First I waited until my words were more than those of a child, and then I spoke; and to my amazement, I discovered that the foundation of another's convictions may depend on a few of my words. My reason and my emotion are the rudder and sails of my soul; and when I find myself tossed by the waves of disappointment, discouragement, and disillusion, they keep my course smooth and steady. I am powered by my emotions, guided by my reason. When my elements wage bitter wars on the battlefield of my mind, I must rely on someone else’s judgment. I must become a follower until the struggle is over and peace is restored. 11 12 We live our lives day by day; when we make a mistake, we analyze it, learn from it, and use it as a stepping stone to wiser, more intelligent decisions. Our teachers can only reveal to us that which already lies half-asleep in the dawning of our knowledge. They cannot give us understanding; they can only show us their own understanding. It is a wise teacher who, rather than bid us enter the house of his wisdom, leads us to the threshold of our own minds. Knowledge is my freedom song! It is well that I should finally come to express in words that which I have always known in thought. There cannot be scales to weigh my new found knowledge, nor a yardstick with which to measure its depth; for I have discovered that “self ’ is a sea, boundless and measureless. 13 14 There are people, events, moments of this year that I shall not remember until I see them reflected in my own children's eyes years from now. Although I cannot return to this year, cannot relive its golden moments, I know I will not lose what I have gained — knowledge and experience more priceless than diamonds. This school has been a friend to me — a friend I cannot leave without some sorrow. It is not just a year that I shall leave behind, but an entire lifestyle, separate and good, different from any I have known before or shall ever know again. Though some are gone from us forever, we who remain reach for each other and form a bond of unity - we become one for all and all for one. We, as freshmen, were bonded by necessity - the need to avoid being stuffed into lockers. We, as sophomores, were united by the struggle of having to take physical education every dav! We, as juniors, became a closer unit when we ordered our class rings. We, as seniors, were brought closer together by the thought of inevitable separation. Some of us have reached the end of these brief years; others are just beginning. Together, a class survives the tempests ... but only together. 28 Classes 29 30 fifth] Alifinat i] ' Potida fya ( AnJtMn fyeiMtl A’lWjhm At'iu ( Jjt AsUh'iA (fita A. fia)l a ite (OJnn Taijt {fion i JL %, %m A (anj Ann (fiontt ffuinitdjn A' fnf rfi)yaiit f 'ttjnljrtli Ann rfiutlanan Victim No. 73. Alone, we hesitate and stand back; organized, we forge ahead and accomplish. Supported by each other, we present ideas designed to improve, we build communications to close gaps, we generate pride to make ourselves and our school worthy of recognition. In our individual selves we find pride and honor. Bonded together, we form this gigantic force of pride that can never be dissolved. Each organization stands for ideals of life - ideals that will forever serve as guides for living. 68 Organizations 69 Officers Mr. Simmons, sponsor; Kerry Buckley, president; Ginger Ghol-son, secretary; Mr. Bennett, sponsor; Raylyn Howie, vice president; Terry freeman, treasurer. Certain faces will always be remembered - some for the joy and laughter they create, and some for the wisdom and serenity they reflect. In years to come, we shall recall how these personalities emotionally accelerated the every day pace of school. Etched in our memories will be the pictures of these who excel academically and socially and who delight in life itself. However, in thinking of these few personalities, we must realize that each of us contributed some part of ourselves, no matter how small it seemed or how unnoticed it passed. Let us remember one another as special individuals ... for we are all personalities! 88 Personalities 89 Mr. and Miss B.M.H.S. GARY THOMAS 107 The mountain-top elation of a victory or the voice-choking anguish of a defeat - these are the emotions of an athlete. The knowledge that he has an important job to do, an important part to play for his team, and die realization diat someone on the opposite team is determined to stop him - these are the thoughts of an athlete. Tense locker room sessions at halftime, watching the ball go through the basket, or hitting a grand slam - these are die experiences of an athlete. Grim determination and soaring dedication that constitute a great adilete also form the motives for a driving lay-up, a grinding tackle, or a searing burst of speed. After the exhilarating taste of sweet success and the humble emptiness of failure, then and only then does the adilete realize the true meaning of sportsmanship. I 108 . It’s hard to believe, but it’s a fact. After supplying so much of the material and the land to build America’s houses and cities and highways, after meeting our constantly growing demands for paper products, our forest is still 761 million acres big. How have we been able to do so much and still have so much? In the first place, trees are a renewable resource. They grow back, again and again. In fact, about the only way to remove a forest permanently is to remove the land itself. By paving it, for example, or covering it with a lake. Westvaco Wickliffe, Ky. We’ve also been able to add to America’s present forestland by reclaiming land previously lost to other uses, including millions of acres of marginal farmland. And to supplement natural planting, we’re planting trees ourselves: more than a million and a half acres of forest a year—and more than one tree for every tree we use. We’ve developed new methods to grow more timber faster on the same land base, too. For example, the forest products industry owns less than 9% of all the American forest. Yet this land provides the raw material for one-third of our wood and paper products. - A renewable resource, responsibly managed. New forests. And better ways of growing more timber faster. Almost 500 years and a new nation later, they’re all helping to keep America green. And growing. Compliments of DR. AND MRS. S. G.
