Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1972 volume:

Until now I have waited for my beginning, alone or sometimes with others. Now before me I see an open door; and waiting behind that door, beckoning to me, are pages of intellectual mystery and messages of inspiration. In this place of learning, I face reality — the smeU of chalk dust, floor wax, and musty lockers — the sounds of morning greetings, the sharp ring of the first bell, footsteps in a deserted hallway. This is the outline of my beginning. I will fill it with living! Every day begins with challenge — the important factor — whether of mind or muscle. I am challenged by mastery itself in the hope of proving myself greater and stronger than the obstacles thrown before me. If I look around, I see the hands of wisdom held toward me when I need to be strengthened. Knowing that guidance is all around me, I lift my chin a little higher and plant my feet a little firmer. Although I meet my challenges alone, I receive my inspiration from those who believe that I can and will succeed. Prompted by a constant desire to reveal my inner motives, I strive for self expression. Sometimes my words are faltering and clumsy; but noticing a smile or nod of encouragement,1 plunge valiantly ahead. Reaching and achieving9 step by step! Nevertheless — Reaching9 Achieving. I reach out for knowledge, only to be touched first by experience. In the beginning I tremble with uncertainty, then grow bolder with each new success, discovering that to experience is to learn without ceasing and to acknowledge without fear. Always am I hoping for some new and exciting challenge to prove the skill of my hands, and always am I dreaming of the day when my hands will fulfill a greater role in life. I could not be complete without a strong shoulder to lean upon or a warm hand to hold. It is vitally important to me to be understood as only my friends understand me, or I. . . them. No matter whether they are peers or elders, I need a friend with whom I can share the little things — a hint of laughter, a bit of gossip, a change of mood — even cutting lunch line or knocking the weather. For these, I need a friend. There is excitement in belonging, in the secret joy of knowing that I am needed to make the mass complete. I can choose to lead dauntlessly, or I can follow humbly. I sense that in the crowd there is a special place reserved for my identity alone — a place that fits together with all the rest —forming a whole from a part, a victory from defeat, a temple from a single stone, or a new way of life from a spirited idea. 14 Now I must end this day of beginning, for tomorrow I must begin again. I no longer feel so lost in a mighty crowd, for I am a part of that crowd. Patiently I go forth; diligently I search — but I am comforted in the dream that I may find the true meaning of my existence. Yes, I search Because I am ME! 15 The Bomb, 1972 Volume Twenty Ballard Memorial High School Barlow, Kentucky Table of Contents Administration Classes senior junior sophomore freshman eighth seventh Organizations Personalities Sports Advertisements jfSSBimm Mr. John Floyd Superintendent of Ballard County Schools MRS. BRADY HOWLE MELINDA STEWART Mr. and Miss Popularity Brady Howie Melinda Stewart Popularity is a prize-winning smile, a democratic spirit, an inner confidence born of repeated successes in human relationships. During the month of June, the boys attended sessions at Eastern University at Richmond, and Girls State convened at Morehead State. The agenda dealt in organizing city, county, and state governments through popular election of convention members. Many students are also very active in organizations other than local school clubs.
