U us 9s 7i 7KJfx Marked by physical expansion and scholastic progress, Ballard Memorial High School can be proud of its history. Under the tireless supervision of Mr. Frank McGary. our growth has been keyed to the needs of the present and the future. Since the opening in September 1952, and the dedication by the late Vice-President Alben W. Barkley on May 13, 1953, numerous improvements have been made to promote interest and expand educational opportunities and facilities. To keep pace with current scientific advancements and provide better training in this field, new and modernized laboratory equipment has recently been acquired. To promote the athletic program, a beautiful and adequately equipped gymnasium was added in 1958 and later dedicated by Governor A. B. Chandler. A new farm shop, built in 1958, now provides training in the use of farm machinery and makes modern methods available to our agriculture students. The Home F.conomics Department has been equipped to meet the state criteria as well as the standards required by the Association of Southern Schools. In this department electric sewing machines, refrigerators, numerous books on home management, a film projector, and other teaching aids have been purchased. Various clubs and organizations are gradually being formed; at the present there are approximately twelve, two of the newest being the Student Council, organized in 1957, and the Future Teachers Association, organized in I960. The Bomb has been published each year. The school paper, the Beacon, first printed in 1954, has been published each succeeding year, and in I960 was rated first in the state. Many of our students have won honors in music, public speaking, mathematics, agriculture, home economics, and business, and later made significant achievements in these fields. We are justly proud of our star farmers, holders of homemakers degrees, numerous contest winners, our basketball team, which has gone to the regional tournament three years, and feel honored for having two National Merit Scholarship winners among our number. Our third principal, Mr. Robert Fiser, who assumed leadership in 1958, heads a well-qualified faculty of twenty-four, eight of whom hold Masters' degrees. Especially to be commended are the six teachers who have taught throughout the first decade of our history. Although we are proud of our record, we are eager to add other physical improvements in the form of an auditorium and new class rooms, and hope to obtain higher standards of academic performance from both faculty and students. cSuperintencfent FRANK McGARY , Jo nt TKessciye This year concludes a decade of growth for Ballard Memorial High School and completes a more lengthy period of growth for you. Although we have grown steadily and substantially since the opening date in 1952, we earnestly hope the next ten years may mark the beginning of a fuller growth of character and competence for you, and for your Alma Mater the beginning of a broader, more intensive academic and cultural program extending its influence far beyond its present bounds of time and place.
