« 'P ieoowict Here is the 1961 BOMB. The staff has tried to give you the best account possible of the 1960-61 school year. It contains the record of your happy times and sad times, and your scholastic and social activities. Some will leave this year to begin new phases of life. Some will return next year to further their knowledge. For each one we have tried to keep a record that will be an inspiration toward building a better future. This is your annual. Without you, there would not have been one. We, the staff, sincerely hope that you enjoy it half as much as we have enjoyed preparing it. JANET SULLIVAN LINDA ROLLINS Co-Editors 3 etltca£to t To our parents who have so faithfully stood by us through these important years we, the staff, dedicate the 1961 BOMB. You have been ever ready to give a steady hand to help us through these formative years from childhood to young adulthood. Your patience and encouragement have helped to make these years more meaningful. You have smoothed over the rough places and given us guidance and counsel when we needed it. We feel that we shall be better prepared to build successful and happy futures because of the support you have given us. This dedication is our way of saying, “Thank you.” 4 rfcUHieU tnattMt Sctfrewtte tde U 7 fe ia e May I congratulate you upon your accomplishment. You are now faced with one of your first great decisions. What am I going to do? Shall I continue my formal education, or iust what shall I do? Remember the world in which you live demands trained people. We have tried to give you the foundation on which to build and, we trust, the inspiration needed to forge ahead. The decision is yours. The opportunities which lie ahead are many, and I challenge you to be ready when they present themselves. May you dedicate yourselves to the great task of keeping this country free and at peace with the world. W. F. McGARY ntKcifrcU' During the school year of 1960-61 we are facing another international crisis which is challenging our ingenuity, our energy, and our ability to think clearly. The following guideposts may help us to keep this country free as it was planned by our forefathers who met in Independence Hall. Let us remember that without individual initiative our country cannot remain free. It is the motivating force within us that creates a desire for a better way of life and at the same time permits us to develop the habits, attitudes, and skills necessary to build such a society. If we are to maintain a free society, we must as individuals be willing to pay the price of freedom. Education reaches its zenith when it assists man in this pursuit. The problem is how to teach man to want to be free, and at the same time encourage him to accept the disciplines that make this freedom possible. We must revise the philosophy of life that freedom is a right rather than a privilege; a gift rather than a quest; that someone else can make us free; that freedom is a cheap thing that costs little or nothing of ourselves. This has been a good school year. Best wishes to each of you! ROBERT G. FISER 7 (hzsicC £cCucatio t FRANK McGARY---------- Superintendent LEWIS PIPPIN W. F. HOOK FRED CASE, JR. ROSCOE JERRELL C. M. MRS. FRANK CLASS OF 1961 Soon the seniors of 1960-61 will bid farewell to their beloved Alma Mater. Though small in size, our class has won its share of recognition and honors. Among our members are leaders, athletes, speakers, and musicians. As evidence of our leadership abilities, we can proudly state that the presidents of twelve school organizations are seniors. A number have held various offices, and all of our class members have been active in various organizations. During our junior year two of us were members of the debate team when it held the number-two position in the region. Together they won fourteen out of nineteen superior ratings in speaking events. One has very deservedly won the state speaking contest at the Kentucky State Fair. Musically talented, a number of our seniors have contributed much to the school’s music program. At present, one member, holding two superior ratings in piano from Murray State College, has had the honor of appearing with Liberace. Excelling in athletics, our boys have earned thirteen letters in baseball and basketball. One of our present cheerleaders has recently been elected for the fourth year. Another accomplishment which we are very proud of is our magazine sales which have amounted to more than nineteen hundred dollars, a goal never before attained by a senior class. The happy memories of the past four years will linger long in our hearts; and as we leave Ballard Memorial, we hope that our class will be remembered as one of determination, promise, and spirit. by LANA TRICE JOYCE ARINGTON “Portrait of a lady” WILLIAM EARL BIRNEY “His ability is hidden behind a bright cloud of silence and sincerity.” SHELLY BATTS “Sometimes I sit and think, but most of the time I just sit.” 18 ALVIN BAILEY “He is always ready for work ar play, preferably play.” JANICE BOULTON “Such a girl one seldom meets.
