Mrs. Gibbs recites poetry to her Language Arts 11A class. A New pproach Under the direction of Mr. Claude Willson, the new head of the department, and a staff of fifteen teachers, Language Arts students had a full schedule of reading, understanding and writing. Sophomores started off the year with Greek Mythology and Romeo ana' juliet. juniors concentrated on American authors. To Kill A Mockingbird, Our Town and The Crucible were read by all eleventh grade students. Seniors, who only needed one semester of Language Arts to graduate, spent a good part of the course reading MacBeth, The Canterbury Tales, Lord Of The Flies and Animal Farm. Seniors could also take college preparation courses, such as Advanced Literature and Senior Reading. All students spent some time in the study of poetry. The Language Arts department offered a new program this year to insure individualized attention to students with reading problems. The class, open to any student, was started to develop reading skills. Completely voluntary, the class was held in the library conference room under the direction of Mrs. Polly Weston, an instructional aide. Students went into the class whenever they felt they needed it and could quit going when they had completely benefited from the program. ln some cases, Language Arts teachers assigned pupils into the program in place of the ordinary class period. The same subjects were taught, but were covered more thoroughly. With no more than eight per class, students were assured of receiving a closer personal understanding of the subject. Through this program, it was hoped that all students could acquire the ability to read, the most important of all skills. li juniors take notes in U.S. History. Experimentation Several Contemporary Problems and United States History classes initiated a new approach during the first quarter of this year. The new program was shown to be successful in eliminating a large amount of repetition in the courses. It involved the team-teaching of Mr. Tjaden, Mr. Creighton, and Mr. Kourkoumelis. This approach allowed the teachers to specialize in one aspect of teaching, to group the students according to ability and let them work at their own speed, and to reexamine departmental subject matter for more effective instruction, Grading method was one of the major changes incorporated into the new system. Under this, there were only three possible grades that a student could receiveg A, incomplete, or withdrawal. To measure the value of this new approach, its results may be compared to those achieved by the majority of the teachers who continue to instruct in the popular method. This approach was experimental, but if the school system has access to the additional teachers, time, and funds which were found to be required to maintain the individual instruction needed, it will be tried again.
