ee ,f V X nf X - W -W-mg'-'OT One phase of IG lf IS Operation Deepfreeze. The International Geophysical Year is the most tar-flung and intensive study ever made of the planet Earth. l.G.Y. began July l, T957 and vvill continue for eighteen months, Scientists from more than sixty nations vvill participate in making studies of the earth, its shape, its seas, and its atmosphere for the purpose of better understanding man's surroundings. Our community is making many contribu- tions to l.G.Y. Studies in geology, oceano- graphy, and many other fields are being carried on at the University ot Washington. Scientists are making more accurate meas- urements of Mt. Rainier and studying its glaciers. The Coast Guard Cutter, Northvvind, which has its home port in Seattle is taking part in Operation Deepfreeze, an expedition to the Arctic to gather data about this vast snovv covered region.
